I personally went to school with Tara. I am glad to see that she overcame these addictions and is able to talk about it. Maybe her speech will help the next 14 year old little girl who is struggling with life. Make KY proud sis.
thank you!!! great talk! i have 32 days clean after 11 years in addiction and i want to be an advocate for girls going through this disease when i am able!
True development! Love her presentation. Great speaker! This is what the real Miss USA 2006 is in her full potential still making her mark of being relevant in 2019. I will be honest that i wished Tamiko won. You Tara prove mer wrong with this speach!
Thank you for this presentation. What you shared will help many people be inspired to get well. That being said...addicts should be careful how " loud" we are about our recovery. Did you know that if you are a victim of medical malpractice you will not be able to be a witness? The very fact that a person is in a treatment program, Proves that person is an addict and therefore not a " credible witness". So dont be Too loud because in a legal sense, declaring oneself to be an addict means that anyone can do anything to you and they will never be punished. Trust me on this. When people learn that someone is an addict, they don't care about our recovery. All they hear is that you Had to recover. BUT if you have lots of money, support, etc...you probably CAN be as loud as you want.
People will look down at people with addictions... Being told to be a good mom, just stop drinking, just cut back, you just like to drink, you dont have a problem... Its heart breaking, especially when people will ignore cries for help and say its attention seeking... well yeh it is... they was attention in that they want to be heard, helped... its a cry for help.
Thank you for sharing. I'm a person in long term recovery. 11/15/11 is my clean date. I'm blessed to be able to share with addicts on a daily basis because God found me worthy to work in a drug rehab as a peer support. I love that you called out the old-timers to share their recovery. Together we do recover.
That was incredible. She has a gift for speaking and making people feel something. I am a woman in long-term recovery as well, and I loved everything she had to say.
What an inspiration Tara is! I love how she can express her pain with such grace and dignity! And to throw in humor the way she does, brilliant! Well done Tara and all the recoverers out there
Love when people share their story to help others. I was bulimic for 10 years and see SO MANY parallels between your story and mine. Recovering out loud makes you feel FREE. Thank you Tara! xo
Wow! Thank you Tara!! That line… “the chaos in the room was like the chaos in my mind,” describes the struggles those dealing with mental health disorders face daily!
Amazing, absolutely amazing, this girl is saying exactly what we needed to hear and know. Let's take the stigma away from the people who are already suffering and having a hard time coping. Life can be hard, but with human acceptance and connection, the sky is the limit. God bless xx
Shame is a huge component of addiction. We addicts use partly to escape the shame we feel from using. Shaming addicts for their behavior to help them is like throwing gasoline on a fire to put it out.
The problem is even worse than this because even treatment fails 90% of the time. I believe the reason is that it ignores trauma, and rather than utilizing effective low cost treatments, some such as EMDR is that have been around for at least a decade. 12 step programs have a place, and should be available and encouraged for those who want it, but it is not working as the foundation of most treatment programs because it ignores trauma. I was glad that Tara Conner included her trauma in the story of her addiction, but it ends without telling us what broke the cycle.
Totally agree. Trauma is the real reason behind alcoholism and there are many ways to heal trauma that do not involve a treatment center. I think we mostly need more of an awareness.
If you told me a beauty queen associated at one time with cheeto would open my mind and have me crying at the end of her talk, I would not believe it. Thank you, Tara Conner.
Love her comment at 8:15 tho... "We dont need to lock people up or build a wall " That was sweet ! I bet she pukes at the thought of being close to him...
@@gerardjones7881 As many amazing things there are that God can help you through, He alone is not going to prevent someone dying from severe withdrawal or coming dangerously close to it...would you tell someone with cancer they don’t need treatment?
He wont listen. She's a beautiful, blonde, female and all trump cares about where women are concerned ( he's Told us) is where they should be grabbed and how young they can be grabbed. Even if he were still president he listens to his wallet and his fame. Perhaps if we coupd somehow have a Helpful treatment program that paid people like him, they'd do it. Its ALL about the money ladies and gentlemen.
Now THAT is Miss USA. You have a beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing it.

Thank you for this talk Tara. Great point about helping those in prison with addictions get the recovery they need.
Wonderful call to arms and encouragement to bring this message to government. Much needed. Bravo
Congrats Tara! And, I love the concept that the morality isn't in the addiction, but how we respond to the crisis of same.
That was so articulated. 10 years amazing keep going. Absolutely people need to speak out about addiction. As it there is still a huge stigma.
