In response to comments that Diana, Patti, Gladys, Dionne & Aretha were all friends. I’ll say after reading Patti’s “Don’t Block the Blessings” back when they were “on the come up” they were young, hungry & competitive! Things were done to sabotage careers, that the reader may find funny but when it’s your livelihood, your money maker, your dream being sabotaged there’s no humor in it. They were striving to remain relevant, #1 & loved by fans! Not to say that Gladys, Patti & Dionne’s friendship isn’t genuine but Diana & Aretha stood alone & that can make some women very uncomfortable! Dionne understands the challenges that come with being a Solo Artist & Diana knows the comfort of singing in a group. Diana chose to stand in the spotlight alone & soared as a solo Artist. Aretha remained strong from beginning to the end. I said all that to say I’m sure it wasn’t easy being crowned “The Queen” early in her career. I’m sure her success came with many enemies vying for her spot! I can relate just working in the Corporate world, I have seen women form alliances just to make me feel alone or “not part of the click” because I stand alone & to collectively discredit my abilities. In response to comments that Diana, Patti, Gladys, Dionne & Aretha were all friends. I’ll say after reading Patti’s “Don’t Block the Blessings” back when they were “on the come up” they were young, hungry & competitive! Things were done to sabotage careers, that the reader may find funny but when it’s your livelihood, your money maker, your dream being sabotaged there’s no humor in it. They were striving to remain relevant, #1 & loved by fans! Not to say that Gladys, Patti & Dionne’s friendship isn’t genuine but Diana & Aretha stood alone & that can make some women very uncomfortable! Dionne understands the challenges that come with being a Solo Artist & Diana knows the comfort of singing in a group. Diana chose to stand in the spotlight alone & soared as a solo Artist. Aretha remained strong from beginning to the end. I said all that to say I’m sure it wasn’t easy being crowned “The Queen” early in her career. I’m sure her success came with many enemies vying for her spot! I can relate just working in the Corporate world, I have seen women form alliances just to make me feel alone or “not part of the click” because I stand alone & to collectively discredit my abilities. These women worked hard to be the best & unfortunately that comes with a price! I love them all but your colleagues are not always your friends, you’re competing for the same success & that type of competitiveness will make people do strange things to survive!

But tbh she was never dark skinned unless she tanned in the sun. Which happened a lot cause she is an outdoors type of person. She has a summer shade and winter shade like everyone else. Also lighting plays a part. I’ve seen even in this interview when she turns a certain way the lighting changes her shade. She was definitely brown skin and that’s what happens to us brown skin girls.
