Between Two Berms: Saving Grindavík From Lava

  • In this instalment of our visits to the eruption area, reporters Alina Maurer and Art Bicnick provide a closer look at the efforts being made to protect the Reykjanes town of Grindavík from lava. A big part of this is the construction of earthen berms, which help keep the lava at bay. As there is limited reentry allowed into the town, although overnight stays are discouraged. Grindavík was evacuated just hours prior to last Wednesday's eruption.

Thanks a lot, Alina and Art, to start again with a volcano channel on You Tube, like Valur and Art did before. I really appreciate this kind of information.

I've been watching the eruption since November .I watched the geologists for information about iceland, I've never seen this girl before but there is something refreshing about her reporting she is not over the top, she is like a reporter in training very candid ,polite .🎥👍

This is such an excellent report Alina and while there are plenty of good drone shots online, I appreciate getting to see this “boots on the ground” perspective and how it has so radically changed since my own visit. Much respect to the camera operator for walking backwards on that tricky gravel barrier!

Thank you so much for these video reports on the eruption in English, these are so valuable to me. I’ve been following the Icelandic eruptions since March 2021 from England, it’s just incredible to see active geology like this on our planet. Thank you for everything you’re doing at Iceland Review.

This is the first time this channel has come up for me. Interesting to hear an English speaking reviewer without a heavy Icelandic accent. I sub'd. Keep up the excellent coverage Alina. I have followed all the eruptions from the very first one several years back. I'm from Michigan, near Lake Michigan. And nice drone work Art. I remember the controversy when the protection berms were first discussed. Lot of people thought is was an expensive endeavor to save the Blue Lagoon and the power plant. Fast forward to today, the berms are the life blood of Grindavik and several other important parts of Iceland. Someday, I'd love to visit your country.

In Hawaii where the lava meets the water there is not explosions just steaming, only in the vents where magma meets ground water is there phreatic action

I have enjoyed watching this review. I have been watching these eruptions since the begening but never from the view of a ground reporter. I also liked the view from on top of the berm as if I was there myself. Just a small observation. Had the lava reached the lake or the sea it would not have caused a pyroclastic flow. It would have caused some dangerous gases though, as the interaction would change some of the water into acid. Pyroclastic flow is more dangerous and is a sudden explosion of the volcano which is filled with ash, gasses and tephra and then the sudden downward movement aided by gravity. Phyroclastic flows can reach speeds of hundreds of kms per hour and are the most deadly. I think what you ment was phreatic. It is the explosion that happened at 4pm when the magma met ground water. The water is turned instantly to steam which would expand about a thousand times having nowhere to go but up causing the explosion. Having said this I am not a volcanologist so if I am incorrect I hope someone corrects me.

On this eruption it stopped a few feet from the road. But the February 8 and March 16th eruptions both crossed the road. The February 8th eruption then destroyed the water pipes leading north from Svartsengi. The March eruption didn't reach those pipes.
