This song is so complex that they had to slow it down a little and make little adjustments so that Geddy would be able to pull it off. His playing during the verses is so intricate that you can clearly see him in full concentration. Just amazing. Pound for pound, this is probably their most ambitious song. It's very short but packs a wallop.
Agree. Fortunate to have seen them in the 80's and 90's. I believe they largely influenced Tool's musicians - Adam, Danny, and Justin - all who are the top artists for their respective instruments. At each of the four Tool concerts I attended, when Maynard was in the dark, I recalled thinking I was watching a modern-day version of Rush.
I agree... I loved seeing Geddy with his Rickenbacker 4001. Unlike many other Rush fans, Hemispheres was my favorite album of theirs. A very underrated album. You have great ears!
When you see Rush live, they sound identical to their studio album, and you realize how talented they are, how unique this music is, and how special the moment is to be there.
Agreed. They were at their peak. In fact, you could make a case for ALL of them being the best ever, at their respective positions. As a drummer, I KNOW they are trchnically THE greatest band ever, in pure skill.
Listen to Geddy SHRED that bass as he is singing! Oh my God he is a talented mad man! . This has always been my favorite Rush song. The bass and drums are the most bad ass I've ever heard. Geddy carries the melody with the bass, something that most bands don't do which is why Rush sounds so damn good.
Geddy's bass lines were so precise and melodic and fit perfectly underneath Alex's guitar. I also loved Alex's sound during this era. And of course Neil's thunderous fills. There was so much going on. I was always awestruck by the fact that all this music was created by just three guys. There will never be another band like Rush. RIP Professor.
Sheesh. How on earth do 3 people find each other in this way creating music like this? Been a fan for decades and sadly will never see them live again. Both times I saw them I was in complete awe. Polite people making rock is rare.
Words can’t describe the impact this band has made on my life and millions of others ! In my top 25 favorite Rush songs! ( Circumstances) I cried like a baby when we lost Neil recently, not only an amazing drummer also an incredible writer and a beautiful soul of a human ... I love you Rush !!!
A Minute With Mars I know what you mean. I cried too when I heard Neil die. He was my only inspiration to play drums which I play today at age 50. I still learning about Neil from the many videos and readings about his life personally and on stage. The more I learn about him the greater the impact of his death grows. He is definitely like loosing a close family member to me. I listened to him everyday at work, driving, partying, and just kicking back. I have been missing him for a while since retired years ago. But now he’s gone forever and it is tough to take. No chance of a reunion concert or single. Sad....
Hemispheres was so frustrating for Geddy Lee, he almost quit It took like 10 mos to record it Thank God he didn't quit brilliant album Brilliant Band 🎸🇨🇦❤️
Rickenbacker 4001 is the best bass guitar ever and Hemispheres is my lifelong favorite Rush album. First saw them in '76 touring behind All The World's A Stage!
2:15 Alex with that beautiful and mellow chord progression, those bassy ass Taurus pedals!!! Accompanied by Neil's melodic keyboard percussion... Then Ged's glorious fucking Oberheim 8 voice comes in!!! WHY I LOVE RUSH.
I'm a big Rush fan but your statement sounds pretentious. Rush is one of the best bands of all time, but if you think that bands as Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Who, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Doors and Queen don't come close to Rush then you are wrong.
This was probably done right after the album was done. It's almost like sitting in the studio while they put this one done. Such an angry riff. Greatness.
Honored to comment here with all of these fans. Saw them play this in Milwaukee 2007. 26th row on Geddy’s side. Unbelievable, it was so good! One of my favorite memories of seeing them play. Best band ever!

If you ever been to a Rush show you see real life how incredible they are. Could as well have been a studio cut. There are no shortcuts in Alex's live show, those effects are really there, and he has a tech somehow pull them off. All analog for the early records... these live vids are a treasure.
From what I've heard, Hemispheres was their most challenging recording to make. On one hand you have the epic Cygnus X-1 which I believe set the standard for sounding as "full" as they ever have and then on the other hand you have Cricumstances, The Trees and La Villa Strangiato which are more compact but still very powerful AND melodic. Very few progressive rock bands can lay claim to these virtues. I think the timing of when Geddy started adding synth and keyboards, for example, on Signals was also crucial to their ability to grow and still maintain the basic Rush prog rock style. Neil Peart has a gift for making even the most straight-forward drum parts sound amazing on songs like Digital Man and Analog Kid from Signals. And although I'm not a big fan of Grace Under Pressure it does show that Rush could back away from the complex and long structure to something more simplistic as is evident in Neil's playing on that one.
One of Rush's stipulations for how an album sounded was that they had to be able to play it live. If they couldn't play it, they either got better until they could, or tweaked the song. Watch Geddy in this video and see how he holds the bass right next to his hands at the end of the synth part so he doesn't miss any notes. They did it that way all the way till Power Windows, when their producer convinced them that they didn't have to do it that way and that the live version was allowed to sound different from the studio version.
@@craigroberts1670 Grace Under Pressure was a turning point for many older 70s Rush fans who felt the band was "going synth" or selling out to the 80s New Wave, but it's actually a solid album that grows on you. It wasn't my favorite as a teenager but as years went by it's become one of my favorite albums of all time. Rush used synths to create a seriously dark themed album that made all the goth bands seem trite by comparison; GUP is full of imagery of nuclear war and concentration camps and even some cyberpunk themes. At the same time it has killer guitar playing in it, and even manages to stay sci fi and nerdy enough to remind you it's still Rush. I recommend people to take another listen to hidden gem songs like Between the Wheels, which I think is one of the best songs they ever wrote.
I mean the vocals especially in the verses arent as good as the album. He is hitting the highs here but not with the power or the vibrato he did on the album. Just sayin. I wouldnt mistake this for the album track.
First off they are superb musicians and songwriters. Second they play busy-but-hook-laden instrument parts with vocals that "follow" the music's melodic structure around; something only Rush do so well. At the end of the day however I believe its their ability to know when NOT to play as opposed to WHEN to play. Hope that answers you question 'bro!
"Circumstances" was my favorite Rush track for the longest time. It's a magical song to me like wizards made it. Alex's guitar swirls and stabs with no solo needed. Geddy's melodic bass punches through the mist. Neil's playing is exactly what's needed no flash. To me, this is when Rush got really interesting. Doing "Hemispheres" and touring it really pushed the envelope of what these guys could do at the time, but I have to think they were all better off for having done it: better musicians, better songwriters, better arrangers. The best part for me is the instrumental break - I love that little synth part leading up to Alex's guitar erupting into echoing power chord arpeggios. Better than a solo.
Yes, Hemispheres was the apex and culmination of everything that came before, but as Geddy says, Permanent Waves saved them. The big turning point towards shorter songs and less sci-fi / fantasy. Hemispheres and PW are my favorite albums of theirs. Omega and Alpha.
Spirit of the radio had me spending all my paper route and my part time grocery store cash on serious home stereo stuff.. RTR towers, Harmon Kardon, I went nuts.. Wattage was the measuring tape of a great stereo system..Rush filled the air for sure.
Spinning vinyl on a stereo that had pretty massive house speakers was not out of the ordinary back then. It was great growing up with a step brother that had an extensive Rush album collection. I think I was an instant fan.
One of my all time favorites. Incredibly hard to play and then adding vocals over it. Hemispheres does not have a single moment that is not beyond masterpiece.
When watching and listening to Rush it feels as if the the three of them become one, like their minds all melt together into one, and the music just works out perfectly
These are brilliant profound lyrics written by a then 25 year old Peart. Imo it is about we are the source, the creator of our lives. We can try to run away from our problems that many do by moving to another area, or by getting a new spouse, or whatever but we still have our stuff and karma to work out. We as individuals should change not our external circumstances. Inner peace will lead to outer peace not the other way around. 'The more things change, the more they stay the same". The second verse after the boy is disillusioned, he begins to see that he is the creator of his own life and ultimately circumstances The world will be a better place if everyone individually looked within themselves for change and each became a more better person..People can reach their dreams by effort and good thoughts and going for it no matter what. "things that I once dreamed of have become reality". Thank you Neal for profound lyrics that rings true today as it did in 1978.
I was actually hanging out backstage when Rush was touring with Max Webster in Europe, way back in the day. I was very shy and insecure, but thinking back the guys in the bands were too. Geddy asked if any of the girls spoke french. I did not. I ended up cleaning dishes for a backstage pass. Better than sucking off a rodie!
At 16 yrs old, Hemispheres was the first record I bought after I heard The Trees on a college radio station, back when DJs were great about saying every artist and song name. Still have that first TRULY EXCELLENT RUSH album. Very entertaining music and lyrics that stand up over time.
I could never understand how Ged could sing those masterful lyric yet along remember them and ply insane melodic varied time signature bass all at once? Shivers down my spine! GREATEST ROCK TRIO on Earth! Astounding performance!
Agree. One of the more under-rated songs from Hemispheres. A really strong song in every way. God it feels good to like a band for 30+ years.... and then FINALLY people catch up to your "advanced thinking"! Don't worry new Rush fans, we won't hold it against you or say "I told you so". We'll just let their music do all the talking for us.
X RUSH X Forever in My Heart. X Nostalgia. Respect. Understanding. Willpower and Zest for Life. X Thankyou Rush for your Musik over the last 40plus years. Still Listening Today x Amazing!! 70s 80s Musik Influences. Stay Safe Stay Strong. It has been an Absolute Privilege to Listen to your Musik over the Years.!!! Love & Peace. 9th November 2020
I remember in high school my bandmates and a few of their friends and I were drinking and one kid referred to Alex as "The other guy" .....He spent the night outside on the porch drinking in the rain after that disrespect
I always wondered if Spinal Tap had this song in mind when they wrote The Majesty of Rock. "The more it stays the same, the less it changes." No one was immune from those guys.
I love this song off the Hemispheres album! And the drum and xylophone solo that Neil Peart does!! RIP Neil Peart!! One of the best drummers in the world!!
I remember this being the first Rush song that I heard where I wasn't able to comprehend Geddy's ability to sing and play simultaneously. Many more songs followed after.....
That is a Rush trademark. They like to play the live version exactly like the recorded version. Some critics criticized them for it but I liked it that way. Saw them 3 times and every time was incredible.
@@kennethtilton6137 Odd. I've got about 50 live sets by Rush including some bootlegs. None of them sound like the studio. As good as, yes. But not the same.
Mike Williamson this sound almost exactly like the studio, but the tempo is just slightly slower, and there’s also some minor inconsistencies in the tempo (not necessarily a bad thing), and there’s no chorus effect on some of the vocals
I've always loved this song not just for the story it tells, but the sense of power and majesty it has because of the arrangements, and Alex's use of power chords in various parts of the song.
This song had one of the hardest bass lines I ever learned to nail perfectly... the only thing that came close that I can remember is the song Close To The Edge by Yes, but honestly the real challenging part to that was just in the beginning and not the whole song.
One of my favorite Rush songs!!! Great bass line, and the fact that he can sing and play it, while playing foot pedals also shows he's next-level talented
What I love about a live performance from these guys - sometimes they play the songs in different tempos, but it naturally and organically breathes...they don't fight each other for a "proper" tempo, they just go with it.
I always wonder what they're thinking about when they're playing... I've been playing bass for 37 years thanks to Rush, and I always have some kind of inner monologue going on in my head while I'm playing. The more familiar I am with a song, the more my thoughts can drift, often for many measures at a time, and I'm usually trying to figure out how & why the original writers/performers came up with such amazing things as I struggle like a parrot with laryngitis... But I have my fun. :)
You have to love how the Cygnus X1 song was divided into two parts. The first part was on Farewell To Kings but the second half was on Hemispheres. How many other rock bands do you know of that have an entire song spread throughout tow albums?
First band I ever saw. Mom's gave me a half oz of thai stick, a bottle of Jack and tickets to Rush for my 12th b-day. 1976. Dan I miss the 70's. Best years of my life!
love how they play this faster than studio version Geddy hair is so gorgeous , I had that same perm ALex has in this --it was the coolest hairdo back in late 70s
They made it on the strength of their music for sure. Alex's baddest stage move back in the day was walking forward and backwards in front of his amps.
If I wanted to show someone a "typical" Rush song, this would be it. It's a good example of their overall sound in their heyday. One of my personal faves.
Holy shit. Geddy Lee is such an amazing talent and gift to the world. Most bass players would be drooling on themselves even without singing in perfect harmony as Geddy does. Well done Sir.

Thank you Neal for profound lyrics that rings true today as it did in 1978.
karma doesn't exist.
Two factory boys out front and farmer in the back.
Plowing the fields of prog-rock to see what grows.
The breakdown still brings tears to my eyes.
RIP, the god Neil Peart.
I'm so thankful there's so much good footage of the early days.
R.I.P. Neil. I hope the first thing you saw after death was your wife and daughter.
You love Rush because they are brilliant musicians!
I could never understand how Ged could sing those masterful lyric yet along remember them and ply insane melodic varied time signature bass all at once? Shivers down my spine! GREATEST ROCK TRIO on Earth! Astounding performance!
The passion, the discipline and talent of these 3 I will love for life..
Just wow. Thank God in Heaven I caught them live 7 times. Thank you Lord.
Perhaps the penultimate RUSH song! 😎
It's just as good live as it was from the studio! Very impressive and intricate.
I miss Rush! I am thankful that I had them for so long! From my high school years in the seventies to my fifties. I miss Rush!
I remember in high school my bandmates and a few of their friends and I were drinking and one kid referred to Alex as "The other guy" .....He spent the night outside on the porch drinking in the rain after that disrespect
"The other guy"??? omg.......that is just wrong.
I always wondered if Spinal Tap had this song in mind when they wrote The Majesty of Rock. "The more it stays the same, the less it changes." No one was immune from those guys.
Pretty sure "Stonehenge" was inspired by "Xanadu". Especially the moment when the little people appeared to dance around the henge.
True
I love when people dance around
Pure magic from three little blind mice 💪💥🎸
I love this song off the Hemispheres album! And the drum and xylophone solo that Neil Peart does!! RIP Neil Peart!! One of the best drummers in the world!!
I remember this being the first Rush song that I heard where I wasn't able to comprehend Geddy's ability to sing and play simultaneously. Many more songs followed after.....
This might be their most technically complex album. ❤ I love it. .happiest of birthdays to 🎉 Mr. Geddy Lee
This is so good that at first I thought it was a studio recording
Space Cookie - yeah I did too because most of these vids like these are.
Super strong bond. From 16 to 53.no one comes close !truly special.stright from the heart.much appreciated.
Seriously. Who does this? A live non-audience performance?
NO ONE!!!
RIP NP; saw you many times...never disappointed.
Watching those guys it almost gives you chills.
Rush is undoubtedly the best band that ever graced us with live performances and albums.
Plus ca change, plus c'est la maim chose, the more things change the more they stay the same. I loved Rush then and I love them now.
Maureen Wagg meme chose. 🙂
Plus c'est la même chose.
Hemisphere's was my first concert, I still remember it well
Sooo fucking tight! They are simply smooth as silk with their playing. Always have been.
We take our chances, laughed at by time, tricked by circumstances...
Your "mother" gave you that? Damn!
love how they play this faster than studio version Geddy hair is so gorgeous , I had that same perm ALex has in this --it was the coolest hairdo back in late 70s
Heck yea! 1978/79..... My happy place in my life. And to know this band was coming up, whilst creating greatness..... wow....
One of the best Rush songs. Unreal how perfect this record is.
They made it on the strength of their music for sure. Alex's baddest stage move back in the day was walking forward and backwards in front of his amps.
"The more that things change the more they the same"
The more Rush changes the more they stay Rush
The more it stays the same the less it changes.
One of Rush's finest ever songs, hugely under-rated.
Great lyrics and song! Love the old Rickenbacker!
What Geddy Lee does with only 4 strings is nothing short of brilliant
I dont know how Ged does it.
I know how to play this song on bass but I have to concentrate very much on my playing... but he SINGS TOO
He took it one step further later and incorporated synth pedals/keys...the man is not of this planet
Replay over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over until forgetting Neil is gone 💔.
A boy alone
so far from home
endless rooftops
from my window
I felt the gloom
of empty rooms
on rainy
afternoons
sometimes
in confusion
I felt so lost
and disillusioned
innocence
gave me confidence
to go up
against reality
all the same
we take our chances
laughed at by time
tricked by circumstances
plus ça change
plus c'est la meme chose
the more
that things change
the more they
stay the same
now I've gained
some understanding
of the only world
that we see
things that I once
dreamed of
have become
reality
these walls that still
surround me
still contain
the same old me
just one more
who's searching for
a world
that ought to be
