- Amal kumar raychoudhuri was a renowned theoretical physicist from kolkata, India. He is famous for his well known equation named after him in general relativity. Apart from his research in physics Raychoudhuri was also a famous teacher. The documentary was produced jointly by Vigyan Prasar and Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune.
I hope that more people will see this documentary now that Roger Penrose has won the Nobel prize.
I just feel how simply Indian scientists are simply kept un observed and unappreciated

Though you have to be thankful for their contribution but the problem is these geniuses can't be recognised because social media ,TV, newspaper never even bothers about scientific community. Hardly seen some achievement mentioned. In country where big boss,badshah,shitty movies, illogical new songs gain popularity how will people get time to even think about them. Majority will be busy in debating whether this celebrity was having affair or whether this celebrity was product of nepotism. People chase for jobs and get an MBA degree, earning in lakhs. Some go for upsc and get an IAS tag. Rarely people have mindset to study PhD or higher studies and get into research. Many youths are part of some bajrang Dal. Some youth become maulana and devote whole life to Islam,some become priest and some go to gurukul thinking ancient knowledge was far better than current one. Problem is if one cracks IIT or aiims they are not interested in research rather in making money. And this shitty government don't care about scientific development rather focuses only on winning the politics.
And even if you do research you will not get a decent amount of salary. It's the biggest demotivation for youths. And doing mba from IIM gives you good amount of money. What may one choose? Curiosity or money?

In India it's a custom that we are recognized when we are recognised by the foreigners. Truly spoken out by sir Raychaudhuri.

As soon as I heard about the Nobel prize, I asked "Why Raychoudhuri is not getting the prize?" only later found out that he passed in 2005. How sad that both Raychoudhuri and Hawking didn't live to share the prize with Penrose.
He wouldn't have gotten it though.Hawking could have got it though

Why are you even tempted to compare this theoretical physicist with the show business people? He is now even more relevant in light of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics. It should be clear that while people like tailors and even barbers become celebrities in New Delhi and the show business people become celebrities in Bombay, in Bengal and eastern India in general, and in Calcutta in particular, the famous academicians become celebrities and rightly so.

It is a matter of utmost shame that this genius got no recognition for his contribution. But our useless politicians get full time care despite the fact that they hardly contribute towards the society and loot taxpayer's money. People like Mr. Raychaudhari must be our role model, we should aspire to become like him in our respective fields, JNU chaps are waste of India.

I can remember one incident, heard from one of my friend. He was a student of Prof. Roychaudhury at Presidency college. He once went to his house and knocked the door. One lady opened the door , then he asked if there is Prof. Roychaudhury? The lady, who turned out as his elder sister, replied with pleasant smile that which Prof. Roychaudhury you want, actually here , in our house everyone is Prof.Roychaudhury, then he explained more clearly, and then sister called Prof. Roychaudhury by his nick name. Amitabha Roychaudhury is his nephew also a reputed Professor of Physics.
That time that person also realised that Prof.Raychaidhury, the giant figure in Physics could have a childhood and he too had a nick name and atleast someone is there to call him by that name!
I have also heard the exact same story from my English teacher..While he was studying in presidency college ,he heard this from his college mate.....

A classic example of your viewpoint can be Nikola Tesla....western scientist, one of the greatest insight, yet he did not receive the recognition he deserved. Even, there was none present at his bed-side during his death...this was the fate of this genius! How tragic!
Even, Stephen Hawking not getting the Nobel Prize....it didn't demean Hawking rather the Nobel Committee themselves should have hanged their heads on shame for not giving him the prize.

People with good brain and behavior will never be recognize in place like India. Very few teachers can match Prof Roychowdhury's standard and style of teaching physics. He was an well known figure among the Physics students in Calcutta. I was fortunate to be his student ( MSc 76-78 ) when I was watching him speaking in the video I could remember his lectures in "Classical Mechanics" and building intricate equations on blackboard effortlessly without consulting any notes etc . Pranaam Sir...

I wasn't able to grasp the basic crux of relativity for many years then I found a book written by A. K. Raychaudhari and it was written with such a novelty that relativity became comprehensible for me.

Excellent documentary. The humility in academia, that was, seems to be lessening every day.
My supervisor mentioned about him and how he was a brilliant mind, that how much he had loved his subject, with a simple life. How shameful that I never heard about him before. He deserves recognition. People should know about what he had done. An amazing work.

Wish I could have said that too, but that's not true. For academics it is still good, but politics has killed the atmosphere of nurturing creative minds and virtue of diligence long back. Hope, it will get back on track some day again.

My teacher had the rare privilege of living close to Dr. Raychaudhary for a long time in his career. My humble respect to this great man...
This country need more people like them who can actually go out there and represent India on international platforms, interviews and university lectures and talk about actual science with actual scientists in the world. It feels like it has been forever since actual groundbreaking discovery has been made in physics from this land. And it breaks my heart to see that brilliant minds are present but because of one reason or other they are either unknown or limited to India only where most people don't even care.

being a student of science and specificlly physics, I can fully understand what was going in his mind during his research, whether he got recognization or not, he knows he lived his life fulfilling his passion. Rest is a topic for debate for us, researchers and scientists work for their own thirst of pursuit, he lived his dream that's what matters.
I'm so lucky that i watch this video today...5th september 2017...he is truly a source of inspiration, a great teacher and a renowned theoretical physicist....truly said by Mrs. Namita Raychaudhuri that this is the custom in our country if foreigners praise you then you are great.

The dhoti clad professor speaking English in Bengali accent was one of the last reminiscent of the Bengal Renaissance. His teaching was as simple as his life style. During a long loadshedding of the late 70's, he stopped lecturing and went back to Rabindranath, "ihar cheye hotem jadi Arab Beduin" (if instead I were an Arab Beduin). Save mathematics, he was Bengali at the core.
Thanks for putting this documentary! After Prof Penrose received his Nobel Prize , the obvious question will be why Prof RoyChoudhury was not recognised enough. But physicists are not rock stars. They do their work because they are capable and curious. They know they are the flag bearer of human curiosity and intelligence. originality of their work is more important than any recognition... and I don’t see prof Roy Choudhury was bothered!

I had the good fortune of being a student of AKR at Presidency college in the sixties.
The only thing I remember is that the most difficult subject was explained by him so clearly that all complexities. were gone. The greatest Teacher I ever met in my whole career was AKR.
Ma'am you are so lucky to be one the few lucky people to be his direct students . All students of Physics of all generations would love to be taught Physics by himself in the great classrooms of Presidency College. Teachers like him actually raised Presidency to its rarest orbit of dignity and fame.
As a part of young generation and student of BS MS integrated at IACS KOLKATA this documentary gives me goosebumps and a special inspiration to learn more and more .I am fortunate enough to be part of his gharana coz I am taught by his bright student Dr Soumitra sengupta . And for my country India I feel sorry that India has not given talents proper opportunities
Yes at that time we were just a rising nation but after 73 years it's still the same ....one is recognised based on whether international scientist refer his work or not ......having the largest telescope in our country GMRT the works using it is all published in Nature is all by foreigners

Its pathetic that such great minds vanish in the abyss of darkness...so saddening that its needs praise and recommendation from the west to recognize such talents.
This documentary has been made with great heart and beautiful mind. The rolling of tram is very nostalgic and cinematic. No artificiality in shooting inside household.
Although I am from Humanities and did my Post Graduate in English from Calcutta University, I had an opportunity to bow my head in front of Prof. Satyen Bose at my great teacher's home (Dr.Sukumer Sen). Incidentally the name of Prof.Roychowdhury appeared in conversation. Thus I came to know about the savant of science. Thank you very much for your deliberation on Prof.Roychowdhury, one of unsung heros of Theoritical Physics in India.

In all my encounters with true greatness, what I'm always struck by more than the genius is humility. "I place myself in B class, at the most in B+, not A+," spoken like a truly great man, Dr. Raychaudhury, about your "dabblings and delvings" in cosmology. We are grateful that you did dabble and delve; and humankind is the richer.
I am feeling so sad yet happy , so ignorant yet enlightened watching this video.. wish I was his student or acquaintance.. great video , great story , great narration let's make it in many languages and spread this story. Young people are there many in numbers who are bewildered and seeking motivation in life ..this gentleman and this story is one such motivation, let ignited minds have their cue from Prof AKR
