- Until recently the holder of a bank account with just a few thousand rupees, Professor Mahan Maharaj, an ascetic monk, is today the winner of a Rs. 65 lakh-prize for his work in geometry. The highly-regarded mathematics professor who has just been appointed by the elite Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, has won the coveted Infosys Prize in Mathematics.

In IIT kanpur we had a lecture delivered abt the power of a focused mind and its various roles in matters of intuition and abstraction ......it was a profound experience ......... back then it appealed to my rational sense ....the essence of eastern intellect is so well preserved in this order ......unlike people in politics trying desperately to prove puspak vimans and all........here is a school which sheds light on the philosophical debates in these allegories ....and leads willing people towards spiritual experiences .........

Its been around more than 10 years since I passed out from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira. He used to take the classes of probability for students who had Mathematics as general course in Grads.... back in 2004-05 and was also the Hostel warden of Vidya Bhawan for Class11th.

Wonderful interview. How I wish I could attend a place like Ramakrishna Math for a true education! When I discovered the Vedas and associated literature 14 years ago at the age of 55, I realized Advaita Vedanta is the perfect expression of science of our cosmos and personal being, and understanding of it in its fullness and putting that into practice is what will will fulfill me both intellectually and spiritually. Hopefully, the type of education practiced at the many Indian maths will expand across the world - we desperately need it. Thank you very much from Alaska, US.

The way professor MJ explained fractal is amazing. I feel like a similar idea can be applied to the fundamental problem of economics - the problem of limited resource.

I actually forgot! 😕 It was long ago. Probably something like this: Professor MJ described how the quest to maximize sunlight collection leads to the fractal geometry of plants. Maybe I thought, the same might be happening in economics with everyone trying to maximize surplus for themselves. But there're some vital problems: the Universe is locally Euclidean, and Sun rays follow that geometry. I don't know if wealth in general has that geometry of if there's any meaning of thinking wealth in those terms.
Anyway, thank you @@darpanmajumdar9655 sir for reminding me of this. I'm not an economist, but I hope someone, more equipped than me, does something with it.

ramkrishna mission is that platform in india from where swamiji comes. "Ramkrishna" is that monk who explains every religious thing scientifically.
During my childhood I was a mad fan of Prof Einstein, Satyen Bose and Meghnath Saha and wanted to be a mathematician. My first love was geometry and loved to solve the most complicated problems. Time passed like flow of water in nearby river ganga. However, destiny made me an electronics engineer. Now, after retirement living alone, and very close to Sri Ramakrishna temple. Thus became very highly spiritual. Noticed one very common thing between mathematics and spirituality is the necessity of very high level of concentrations resulting in incidents of both getting solutions of mathematical problems and visualization of Sri Ramakrishna - Holy Mother - Swaami Vivekananda in dreams. Spirituality at the last part of life after rigorous practice of science is a very natural consequence and probably should be most sought after, because spirituality is nothing but Meta Science and Meta Science comes only after vigorous practice of Science.
We should be proud that an Indian monk got such a talent. Hope one day he will get novel prize and bring laurel to India. This is India where person like Mohan Maharaj has chosen to become Ramakrishna Mission Monk and renounced himself to serve the humanity unselfishness. R K Mission is really a great.

I came to know about Maharaj when I visited Dakshineswar and Belur
I was in Kashi studying computer science at IIT BHU, and get darshan of maa Annapurna, Baba Vishwanath and maa Ganga. Then I was pulled to Indian statistical institute for MTech CSE, I used to take batch, submit my bag and cross ferry for Belur, one of my friends told me about Maharaj, I am student of Mandar Mitra Sir and Malay Sir, both of them used to encourage me to visit temple, I am indebted to them. in fact second day after my admission I met Malay Sir and he suggested me to visit temple as I was willing and excited, alongwith Ansuman Sir, these three teachers are my favourite, I am fan of Mandar Sir really. I heard that same Mandar Sir is his brother, I am thankful to Maa for being able to know about Maharaj 🙏🙏🪷

When spirituality is combined with Science then it’s a lethal combination (in a very positive way) RKM’s continuous emphasis on education, reading, research inspired from the ideas and the lives of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda has produced exquisite monks like him. I am a Sikh and I must say here we are far behind and need to match up, we need to emphasise more on education, Research and development too in the spiritual field which is lacking terribly among us, not that Gurus teaching lack in anyway but it’s our attitude that needs to change we need to get out from this obsession of going abroad and doing menial jobs there while we can contribute so much here.
We have done well but need to do much more, unfortunately I see fanaticism coming in many people among us. This is going to be fatal and counter productive.
In Sri Ramakrishna's teaching, there are infinite paths to infinite reality. So it really does not matter if you are a Sikh or not, Waheguru is also worshipped within the Order. I am myself a practicioner of both Sikhism and what is known as Hinduism among portions of other faiths, drawing inspiration from Ramakrishna and Vivekananda.

@@singhjasbeer5216 Nice to meet you! I was born in a Punjabi Hindu family that has always also followed the teachings of the Sikh gurus. I believe that there is immense potential for the unity of these (and really, all other) religions in Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda's dharma.

1) Could we design a solar panel tree by mimicking the max surface area created by fractal and hyperbolic geometry?
2) Antennae could be redesigned in a fractal/hypergeometric way? I think an AI system came up with such an asymmetric but highly compact and effective antenna for NASA already.
3) B+ Trees are already used in databases and seem to have a 2D branching structure with a continuous leaf level structure acting as a 1D boundary to the tree. Could we create a 3D tree instead with a 2D leaf level surface? Would make for a more compact and shorter tree. Would it be more trouble than it's worth?
Our buildings currently are built by replicating ground floor all the way to the top with elevator acting as trunk. Branching though is spaced equally. Could we build buildings in a fractal way to maximise occupancy of 3D volume of space? Might interfere with circulation of light and air though.

He is a Vedanti . Vedanta or the essence of Vedas are science. Mathematics is a Vedanga or one of the angas of the Veda. Veda is the knowledge spectrum out of which anga is mathematics. Then Ayurveda is another anga. Nice to see a person practising real Hinduism. Just like 2 is a abstraction of the emperical 2, Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma are abstractions of the ultimate reality.

Proud to have such educated person as a Hindu monk, but saddened me when he said he has no religion, if so then why did he become a sadhu? I have observed the so called pseudo intellectuals in India take great pride in projecting themselves as having no religion, including Amitabh Bacchan who said he does not belong to any religion. If Bachchan does not have any religion then why does he go to temples so often. Followers of no other religion will ever say this barring Hindus. Fail to understand why do they always want to be politically correct.

He never said that in the entire interview. NDTV interviewer kept trying to get him to give some political statement. When he didn't, they put it in the heading anyway.
Sanatan dharma is a way of living by experiencing and acknowledging the true nature of this existence, it is not about who you pray to or how you pray, that is what religion is, hinduism or sanatan dharm has spirituality at its core, athiests, believers etc. everyone comes under it, it talks about the nature of this existence, which pervades the entire universe.

The great monk is right. Hinduism is not a religion, since it was not founded by any human. It evolved over the ages like a forest, that has both good and harmful plants, trees and animals of many colours, shapes, sizes, habit and behaviour. The purpose of Hinduism is to adopt, adapt and adept to all kind of Humanity and nature that exists on Earth and coexist in harmony with minimal conflict and maximising altruism, cooperation and fraternity among humans.
If u dare to compare Yogi to Mahan Maharaj, say that in any IIT/IISc/TIFR campus. U won't get away unscathed. U are comparing a roadside college BSc graduate with a IITK and UC Berkeley alumnus.
An interviewer should be exactly like this gentleman .... let the interviewee opens up and speaks to his/her mind. 🙏

In school I remember him to be a very well mannered,extremely studious but very humble boy. So was his brother. They were examples for mediocre students like us. We always looked up to students like Mahan Da.

The brand of Hinduism he practices is quite different from what general people are aware of. It's very simple but very hard to follow through, values like; discipline, education, celibacy, restrain, service, selflessness and personal growth both psychological and physical.

This is original hinduism. The one popular now is a polluted one going on since the Post Gupta era.
What he practices is quite close to the original form of Vedic Arya Sanskriti . In ancient India, we had Rishis, Acharyas who used to contribute in various physical sciences and knowledge systems. They used to follow "Ashtang Yog" the 8 rules of Yog. That's what he does all those regulations you are telling.
Today's modern hinduism is it's highly distorted form that started pervading from the early middle ages.

See the cross section of a cauliflower, it shows the same branching structure where a small floret/branch of the cauliflower is scaled down version of the entire cauliflower.
This is what he means when he says spherical 3D volume of entire tree/cauliflower is seen to be a highly gyrated 2D boundary seen clearly in the fractal outline of the cross section.

I did schooling in RKMV Deoghar; we had some highly educated and extraordinary maharajas ...
So the monk completely missed the absolutely outstanding, incisive question asked at the end by the interviewer Mr. Pallav Bagla : "so this monk who is _taken in_ by geometry is _enjoying_ himself?!" Monks are supposed to be completely detached (dukheshanudvigna manaaha sukheshu vigata spruhaha -- the Gita) and not get taken in or be enjoying, but be doing work as duty (karmanyevaadhikarasthe maa phaleshu kadaachana -- the Gita). Great, great question by the interviewer!! But, that is no detraction from the monk's great mathematics..
Those are very old ideas..
Monks don't enjoy, boys don't cry, Father have to be rough, mother have to be soft-spoken, boyfriend have to be possessive etc etc.
As humanly going along the road of a more evolved species, we try to do things we love.. the things that give meaning to ourselves. Listen to Ramkrishna Mission swamiji's lectures.. this year's and 30-35year old lectures.. you will see a huge difference..
Because, thay are also evolving.. we all are also evolving..
But, yes, the question was really smart.. and Swamiji answered it very cheerfully and beautifully.

NDTV has tie up with Infosys. NDTV has no role in it. Every political party and big tycoons have media houses which work for them. Its owner Mr. Narayan Murty always comes to NDTV when he gives interview. His son and fields medalist Manjul Bhargava came to NDTV when they were opening Sanskrit library in India. All Infosys laureate were interviewed at NDTV. Dr. Bhargava is also good at Sanskrit and once solved mathematical problem through Sanskrit. So Infosys is doing great job.

string theory, mtheory, quantum gravity, super symmetry - the man who is behind all these edward witten doesn't win nobel but instead won fields medal, some people argue fields medal to be even greater than nobel since maths doesn't have a nobel prize per se and also field medal is awarded every 4 years.
