  • I made this film way back in 1997, a little more than a year after shifting base to Calcutta from Bombay. While working in the Physics department of St. Xavier's College, Bombay, I had chanced upon a classical mechanics book authored by N.C Rana and read the following lines in the dedication page" "Dear Dr. Roychowdhuri, generations of Indian physicists owe their classical mechanics to you." I was intrigued by this dedication note. Who was Dr. Roychowdhuri?
After coming to Calcutta it was not difficult to track him down. I realized afresh how this city has been nurturing radical independent thinkers who have left indelible marks in different fields.
At around 23 minutes into this film you will see Roychowdhuri's association with Roger Penrose - something that is being talked about after Penrose's Nobel Prize.
The Singularity of Dr. Amal Roychowdhuri has been produced by EMRC Calcutta. It went on to win the award "Best Programme for Teachers" at the UGC CEC Educational Video Fest.

I am very happy to learn that a book on Prof. Amal Roychowdhuri has come out from Bangladesh. I am not aware of any book on him that has come out in India.

Somebody has to recommend a work for Nobel Prize. Ten scientists had recommended C.V Raman's work, six of them were Nobel Laureates themselves. I believethat even Saha Equation deserved a Nobel Prize. But there were not enough scientists to recommend his work to the Nobel Committee.
