Actually geometrical or higher mathematics is seriously tough. I had my experience with riemannian geometry and algberaic topology and they do take away something from you.

Many physicists were mathematicians for eg newton, gauss etc. Even most complex math calculus was developed by newton .the only people physicists respect are mathematicians becz they are logical and their work makes sense .
Not only theory but also calculations have to be done for a theory to be valid and Einstein did the same , only theories are of no use with out calculations, and no one can't become a physicist with out good mathematical skills.
