[JARmony] Day 1: Setting up a Dirted Enclosed Jarrarium with Livestock

  • Experimenting if it is possible to create an zero tech, airtight, self sustaining ecosystem with plants, shrimp and snails in a sealed jar ecosphere.
    I was originally inspired by SepaDesign's sealed terrariums. But I haven't seen a sealed jar aquarium built with a capped soil base, ala Walstad Method. Hence, the experiment.
    I've intentionally chosen the hardiest of plants so they have the best chance of survival. This is my first closed system of any sort, so don't blame me if JARmony becomes JARsaster.
    Thanks for dropping by, and stay tuned for more! :)
    How I affixed the plants: • How to Tie, Glue or We...
    Hardware:
    Bromioli Rocco Fido 5L Jar, Driftwood

    Can you please tell me how many gallons is your jar?

    Do i need to use sand or does any kind of substrate work? Like pebbles or something? Also for shrimp, do they need a specific temperature and does sudden temperature changes harm them at all? My house has timed heating so it goes on and off.
    Also is it possible to add some small fish like 2 guppy's or a single beta fish?

      I know this comment was posted awhile ago but you should never put guppies or a beta fish into something this small. Beta fish need a minimum of 5 gallons to be happy and healthy and the same goes for guppies since they need room to school. Personally I also would not have less than 3 guppies in a tank since having only two could stress them out unnecessarily. Also since this is a jar and not an actual fish tank with a filter the addition of fish would likely cause huge ammonia spikes potentially killing the fish and at least hurting their quality of life. Shrimp and snails have a very small bio load so they don’t have the same effect on the ammonia levels. I am new to shrimp keeping so take this advice with a grain of salt but I find them to be fairly hardy little creatures. As long as the ambient water temperature in the jar remains relatively the same they should be fine. But again I am new to shrimp keeping so I don’t want to say that it will definitely be ok since that is just based on my experience when the power went out in my home. Also in the case of cherry shrimp they can thrive in a tank between the temps of 60-85 degrees F so room temperature should be fine for them. I am unsure about other shrimp species though.

      @@autumnhughes3781 haven't tried any live animals at all yet since the plants i put in the jar died pretty much straight away for reasons i cannot explain. So until i can safely manage to keep some plants alive i ain't touching any live aquatic animals xD thanks for the advice. Although i don't think even the most hardy of shrimp would of survived what ever went wrong last time

    A filter isn’t necessary? I want to try this haha

    • @TheSoilBandit
      @TheSoilBandit  2 роки тому +4

      It isn't necessary, the bioload is small compared to an aquarium. Anyway, most of my aquariums don't have a filter either. The plants consume the nitrates.
