[Creek Forest] Day 200: Low Tech Nano Aquarium (No CO2, No Fert, No Filter)
Update: Apart from topping up with water, I haven't touched or observed this tank in detail since the attack of the damselfly nymphs.
Pretty much thought the tank wouldn't recover from that, but I guess nature always finds a way - even with my neglect.
______________________________________
Journey of my dirted, low tech, low-maintenance planted nano aquascape; the aquarium light being the only "tech" in this tank. Pretty much a Walstad method tank.
Apart from the the base layer of garden potting mix, the tank is not regularly fertilised and no water changes are performed - only top ups. It is a slow growing tank and has been mostly algae free after it stabilised.
Intend to keep only rosette plants so I don't have to prune it often, and for a "vertical" look. The aquarium light is slightly yellow in the spectrum, closer to the sun, which makes the yellow of the shrimp pop in real life.
Thanks for dropping by, and stay tuned for more! :)

Neo CO2 Diffuser Special Extend (Bendable) Installation
Переглядів 2,5 тис.2 роки тому
Quick and easy install of CO2 diffuser from Aquario. I like this because there are minimal parts going into the tank, which is perfect for nano setups. In fact, if you over bend it slightly like I did (similar to their curved series), you don't even need to use the provided suction cups. The version shown is the "Extend Type (Bendable for tank)", small size.

Turns out, I didn't read the API instructions carefully and dosed DOUBLE the recommended, but I didn'...

UPDATE: Well, looks like JARmony has finally become a JARsaster after almost 8 months. In this final update, we see that the water has tinted to a shade too dark to be purposeful. Apart from some plants, most of the others, and live stock, appear to be dead. This might have been because of the shifting sun in my balcony, resulting in less sun than during the earlier half of the year. I still wa...

Update: In this update, everything goes downhill. I found 4 damselfly nymphs and was afraid I might have missed more. I'm not sure where they came from. They were cutting up the Vallisneria and making shells out of the leaves. A bit like hermit crabs. Then, the Azalea root (which was not previously soaked or boiled), started leeching into the water and killing off most of the shrimp. Journey of...

In this video, I mount a juvenile Platycerium bifurcatum to a Acacia hardwood cutting board with nails and fishing line. I chose to use a cutting board on the logic that it was made to get wet, and hopefully would outlast a regular piece of wood. Thanks for dropping by, and stay tuned for more! :)

If you want to remove them without pouring out the water, you can also tap, or blow, and the...

Do i need to use sand or does any kind of substrate work? Like pebbles or something? Also for shrimp, do they need a specific temperature and does sudden temperature changes harm them at all? My house has timed heating so it goes on and off. Also is it possible to add some small fish like 2 guppy's or a single beta fish?

    • @autumnhughes3781
      @autumnhughes3781 2 роки тому

I know this comment was posted awhile ago but you should never put guppies or a beta fish into something this small. Beta fish need a minimum of 5 gallons to be happy and healthy and the same goes for guppies since they need room to school. Personally I also would not have less than 3 guppies in a tank since having only two could stress them out unnecessarily. Also since this is a jar and not an actual fish tank with a filter the addition of fish would likely cause huge ammonia spikes potentially killing the fish and at least hurting their quality of life. Shrimp and snails have a very small bio load so they don’t have the same effect on the ammonia levels. I am new to shrimp keeping so take this advice with a grain of salt but I find them to be fairly hardy little creatures. As long as the ambient water temperature in the jar remains relatively the same they should be fine. But again I am new to shrimp keeping so I don’t want to say that it will definitely be ok since that is just based on my experience when the power went out in my home. Also in the case of cherry shrimp they can thrive in a tank between the temps of 60-85 degrees F so room temperature should be fine for them. I am unsure about other shrimp species though.

Stop with the bloody water changes and learn how to mitigate the issues that occur in other ways. you are merely seeing the developmental process that aquatic environments go through seasonally. Crystal clear water is not a sign of a healthy aquatic environment, its a sign of humans attempting to make things fit their desires. What variables can you control without water changes??

Also you have filled the jar right to the top, If you reduce the volume of water the process of evaporation and condensation will cycle fresh clean water back into the system, as the water droplets run down the glass this water will also have dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide in it.

I would restart, throwing chemicals at an out of balance tank never works, it's the root cause that needs addressing. It's a shame because it's a beautiful scape. The cause may have been a mixture of things.....a tank of slow growing plants is always going to be vulnerable to algae. The way to treat the algae issue you had was to add some fast growing stems and temporarily some pothos or sweet potato growing out of the tank to take up the extra nutrients in the water column, stop feeding for at least two to three weeks....the fish and shrimp would be fine there is enough in the tank for them to feed on and reduce the lighting by either raising it if possible, or changing it for a less powerful light. Good luck moving forward, fabulous and honest channel and content.😀

      1) Yep just use whatever water you are used to in your aquariums. For myself, i use regular tap. 2) Still trying to figure this out, more shrimp isn't going to be an issue on the bioload as the jar was quite heavily planted. My issue was keeping the shrimp alive, which I suspect was due to insufficient food/algae for them to feed on (I had a few babies born in the jar which stayed tiny for very long).
