  • Fuel mileage races are or at least were a staple of 1.5 mile tracks in NASCAR. In 2006 this was put on full entertaining display at the Kansas Speedway in the Banquet 400. Today we look back at this crazy race and see how winner Tony Stewart didn't even know he won. This is "Where Did We Finish?" The NASCAR Race the Winner Didn't Know He Won

I hate stage racing, but I also hate the situation that lead to Jimmie Johnson winning 7 championships. Same track schedule, at the same points in the year, with the chase system, in a car no one seemed to like driving. Jimmie was the first person to figure the COT out, and since the schedule didn't change, he could just keep building his advantage week by week, year by year. The chase system rewarded that consistenty even if he wasn't necessarily winning everything, until the last few races.
Same sort of issue with Mercedes in F1, where the Mercedes team is so far ahead of everyone, and has so much data about the tracks they race on, no one can catch them unless they cheat, focus on one track, or demand the FIA to give them a new car and engine package. That's why keeping the schedule varied is super important in a racing series.
In truth, I want a year long championship battle again but with weight penalties like Super GT500 does in japan.

The 2011 championship race was what drove that point home in my view. Everything seemed to point towards Carl Edwards’ favor (Tony had more wins but Roush Racing was dominating Homestead in that time. Biffle got 3 Homestead wins from 2004-2006, Kenseth won in 2007, and Carl himself won in 2008 and 2010) but through straight up determination to not give up, Tony outraced Carl to win the title.

The craziest finish I've ever seen was in the Nascar 08 video game. I was driving in my custom car and I managed to lap the feild at Las Vegas motor speedway. On the final lap a ran out of fuel. I coasted through turns 3 and 4 when the second place car of Casey Mears passed me to get his lap back. At that point I knew that if I didn't get to the finish line now, Casey would pass me again and I would lose. So just before the finish line I did an Iowa and parked my car in front of traffic and the lap car of Ricky Rudd packed me over the finish line just as Mears came off of turn 4.
This was the craziest finish I'd ever seen.
Only in a video game though because I don't think this would happen in real life.

Believe it or not I do remember watching this race on TV as a kid, and in retrospect, it was anyone’s race. But the phrase “Only the strong survive” seems very appropriate here. And not just that, but, from a drivers perspective, you gotta know when to gamble, high risk, high reward on a fuel mileage race. You also have to know, when playing it safe, again, high risk, high reward. So in conclusion, the best thing you can do is try to save fuel and tires, is to back off a little bit, and go for it whenever necessary. Case And point: the 2020 Xfinity Series Finale at Phoenix. Even though Austin Cindric was racing on slightly worn off tires, he took a gamble, and he won the race too. I decompress my speech

@@polycube868 had the 2005 Chase used the 2011-2013 Format Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick would still make the Chase in 2005 as Wild Cards and Gordon and Harvick would make the Top 10 in Points at Seasons End

Most recent years, Kansas hasn't been competitive at all. The aero package eliminated competition. All they do is flat foot in the turns. That's not racing.

I can believe Riggs taking the lead from Johnson. He was running Kahne's '05 cars, and was really good at both Charlotte races that year. Should have won a race.
Mikey gets an in-car camera while running 38th in owner points. Even more egregious than the attention Danica got for her mediocrity. Can you imagine them giving Timmy Hill or Josh Bilicki an in-car camera? Me neither.
And finally, shout-out to Awesome Bill for getting a 16th place finish in R&J Racing's POS.

2005 United Way 300 NASCAR Busch Series Kasey Kahne won
2007 Yellow Transportation 300 NASCAR Busch Series Kyle Busch won
2007 LifeLock 400 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Greg Biffle won
2008 Camping World RV Sales 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Jimmie Johnson won
2011 STP 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Brad Keselowski won
2015 Kansas Lottery 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series Kyle Busch won
2016 Kansas Lottery 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series Kyle Busch won
2018 Hollywood Casino 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Chase Elliott won
    **as of 4/27/2021**
I hope to attend one of the fall Kansas races this year, but COVID will determine whether or not that will happen
*this is currently the closest NASCAR Cup track to where I live, at least until WWTR gets added.....wink wink*

You mentioned Earnhardt Jr was a teammate of the Hendrick cars but that is incorrect. At the time of this race, Jr was driving the no.8 Budwiser car and that was owned by Teresa Earnhardt. The first car number Jr drove with, under Hendrick, was the 88 in 2008.
