As someone from a Soviet culture (now an immigrant in the USA) I believe that the resurrection was staged by the Romans, as explained in a popular book where I'm from - "The Gospel of Afranius"; like many others, I read it in childhood and never thought about this question again - until coming to the USA and noticing a stark contrast in the discussion of this question. What's wrong with that explanation?? I'm confused, what am I missing here?..
@@valinorean4816 My own reading is when the disciples lost their sect leader, the doubter Thomas comes by and they have this new guy they propped up as the "revived" Jesus, even though Thomas can't recognize him (because it isn't him). This explains a lot of the character differences post resurrection too. Of course it's always possible it never happened but I'm leaning more towards this.

They were emotionally vulnerable after losing their leader, and someone appears claiming to be resurrected Christ but *doesn't look like him* what ells can you make of that than some opportunist seeing the leaderless sect of followers? After resurrection I I'll concede the changes to character, more authoritative for lack of a better description, can be chalked up to the new role as a divine. Though it doesn't contradict and melds well with the idea of some person just impersonating the dead sect leader to usurp his influence. Note that I'm not taking everything as truth and am assuming that bits and pieces are true while lots of it is just made up by the authors. I don't discount the entire thing being false too as telling the story about "Thomas the doubter" works well as a trick of persuasion. Shutting down doubters in advance by making them empathize with Thomas in the story as if the reader themselves have seen the proof rather than just seeing a *story* of someone who has seen proof. It's similar to a trick used by pyramid schemes in modern day, present a testimony by a 'doubting customer who was then convinced' makes it subconsciously feel as if anything you saw the evidence the doubter saw, yourself.

The firefighter died protecting his family. That is something I'm willing to do for my family, just like any good decent human being would do. If you don't believe in God, which God has given you free will to do so, then at least learn from this man and many others who love so much that they are willing to die for those they love. Also, Bill’s statement about God protecting one person’s heroes but not another’s was right on the money; indulging in that kind of thinking is possibly the slipperiest slope you can walk, especially when so much is on the line.
It wasn't right on the money; Bill doesn't understand the Bible's narrative. Christ was crucified while Elijah was taken up on chariots of fire. Each person has their own story and their own path. There are religious kooks, to be sure, but understanding the Bible and its stories - even if you don't believe in God - clears up a lot of confusion surrounding these issues.

Seneca didn't say that. It's been misquoted to him. Seneca religious outlook was providential, so he he actually would have viewed what happened as devine intervention. No we don’t lol. We have been able to harness some of nature’s power and even predict it, but we still have no idea what things like electricity, gravity, and magnetism actually are. In the plus side humanity just scratching the surface of possible knowledge already improved our lives dramatically, so imagine what we could do with even a 1% mastery of the natural world. This idea that science has things more or less already figured out and that we just need to tend to the minor details needs to die, there is a tremendous amount of work ahead and with every step forward it becomes harder and harder to avoid a major backslide.

The first book of the Bible (Genesis) states that God is not of this planet and that He came here from "Out There" and terraformed a watery and dark planet to hold Life that He (they) created... just as our current Scientists hope to do on another Lifeless planet much in the same way as Genesis describes in the Bible. Of course it wasn't done in 6 "Days" as we know them, but rather in 6 Stages, Epochs, or Ages that could have taken a very long, long time. After it was all set in motion the Life forms that God created culminated in the creation of Man and then an altered companion for him called Woman (womb man?) to take care of it. It should be obvious now that we didn't do that and are actually busily killing it (our Home) in our Hubristic arrogance. Because of our treacherous nature and disobedience God basically left us on own own and said He would be back one day (the Biblical Harvest at the end of this Age) to get rid of the worst of us and keep the best of us! As Herbert Armstrong of the "Worldwide Church of God" once put it... God is growing his "Sons" (children) down here and has an abode somewhere else in Space that we call Heaven! Like Earth, but a place of even greater Beauty, Peace and Love rather than Decay, War and Hate. This all sounds very logical to me as sort of climbing the Evolutionary Ladder... whether people believe it to be true - or not. IMO... Aliens are mentioned in the Bible. The good ones were called Angels (Messengers and Protectors of God and His Creation) and the bad ones were called Demons (Gods Opposers and His Creation's Destroyers). They were depicted with wings because they had the ability of flight when man didn't. When God said: "You shall have no other Gods before Me" it was a stern warning about the bad Aliens... or in other words: "The Fallen Angels" spoken about in the Book of Enoch that left their abode in the Heavens to come down here to infect the Human Race! @@MrJameslascko Here is my take: I was abused as a child, by many different types of abuse, & raised in dysfunction, which became my socialization. It led to massive struggles in my adult life. When I tried to get 'help' from 'the' system, I was only severely harmed, with problems growing, that ultimately led to quitting church. This was all despite having become a Christian as a teen, & such a strong heart of faith, I initially studied ministry in college (then science). I ended up in a faith struggle, & faith won in my life, only because of miracles, not ministry of people or my own reasoning. One miracle, for example, came from praying that I felt failed/ harmed in healing therapy, which led to trouble. After prayer about this, I read a daily Bible devotion/ life application Word, & it was EXACTLY about a woman FAILED IN THERAPY, but then God helping & healing her! MY EXACT prayer! I've seen a gazillion such stunning, miraculous answers to prayer. So my faith is real, living, life saving, my whole life (even my art career goal came from a prayer/ calling). So I have nothing to argue about. It is the best thing that ever happened to me. God is not people's problem, He is their solution. If they realized who the loving, helping, caring, healing, providing, strengthening, peace giving God/ Jesus really is, they'd see there's nothing to fight. Peace. Blessings. Love wins.

I am a Christian who has experienced miracles (& also earned a science degree), yet I can also agree that some of this commentary is ALSO valid. Christianity is an issue of faith, not an EXACT scientific method, & there is a reason God operates His world this way. Otherwise, there would be no purpose in the path of faith the Bible talks about. JESUS cared HUGE about FAITH. Yet, I agree that the digressions Maher pointed out are ridiculous, with toast, & looking for signs everywhere. Yet, I can tell you, I've experienced such astonishing answers to prayer through daily Bible devotions, that it has been near conversational, & certainly miraculous. A big example: the day I prayed (after many such miracles) I had fear Jesus might be a myth, & I don't want to 'throw' my life away, that day, the verse in my daily Bible devotion was the ONLY passage in the whole Bible, that assures explicitly, Jesus is NOT a myth! 2 Peter 1: 16-19. This kind of PERFECT Word has continued for 25 years, YET, there is also an element of distance/ not FULL communication. And at times, i've been unsure. That doesn't mean real answers don't happen. (Another example: the day I prayed why my dad was lying sick in a hospital bed, lingering with cancer, not dying, not healing, the title of my Bible devotion that day was "LINGERING BEFORE DEATH"!! I could give you SO many examples of such PERFECT DETAILED match between prayer/ Bible devotions, that is totally different than Jesus toast. (I learned to only seek God in Bible resources). Another example: it was confirmed 20 times, to be an artist, EVERY single time I asked if it was true, my daily Bible devotion would speak of artists! over the course of YEARS. I prayed for inconveniencing someone when my bike broke down & I was provided a ride; the Bible based Word I read spoke about being provided a ride! in a rough situation. So as much as Bill Maher thinks he is so 'with it,' he does not know the experience of every person on this earth with faith/ the Bible, & I can assure you he is in error in his spiritual blindness/ rebellion. On a road trip, despite a stack of books at my feet, I could not read; something happened to me, that I could not stop obsessively praying for our safety. This was absolutely, total freak, out of the ordinary for me; & has never happened again in decades. I was even lying back in the seat, with a blanket over my head, praying for our safety. At one point, I sat up, head between the 2 front seats, looking at the driver, & saw him fall asleep, heading off the road, into the massive, grassy median, in Kentucky, with NO protective guard rails on either side of the freeway, going over 70 mph. I was able to scream his name, wake him up, direct him to the side of the road, & then take over driving. I am confident it was a spiritual experience, that I could not stop an urge to pray for 1.5 days, (& had not told the driver or anyone); when I desperately had wanted to read my stack of books at my feet! I was in agony, yet felt a mental oppression/ obsession to pray, & it proved true!
p.s. I've not been a Trumpster. In reality, the Bible tells of a God who wanted to be the 'king' of his people, rather than giving a human king. Trump really lost me with opposing our last election, without seeming to need real life evidence for the claims. It is dysfunctional to the max. But not all Christians join this dysfunction.
One day I walked through a grocery store, oppressed by an obsessive thought I would lose my job. I always avoid long lines, but could find no way out this day, so I grabbed a magazine off the rack to read something. I had no idea I had grabbed a Bible based magazine. I just happened to open exactly to a page titled, "For when you lose your job."

I honestly remember having to walk away from someone during a conversation about the "steel beam cross" in the rubble on 9/11. Nearly 3000 people killed that day and they were arguing that God couldn't intervene to stop it, but yes, he could leave a cross behind for people to see. It's VERY hard not to feel angry when trying to have a reasonable conversation with someone like that.

If you've ever had a near death experience you would understand. I was in a terrible car wreck. My tibia was broken, my femur split in half from the top to the bottom. My pelvis was broken in 2 places. My hip dislocated. The bundle of nerves that goes down through your leg was damaged. Part of my calf muscle died where it was pinned against the seat's frame. My heart was restarted twice. I was trapped in the car for an hour. I was life flighted 75 miles to the nearest trama hospital. I had 4 surgeries and spent 2 months in the hospital and went through 6 months of physical therapy. I lost an entire week of memory around the accident. After the fact, my trama surgeon told me not many survive the injuries I had. For years I struggled with the memory loss and why I survived. Nothing could explain why it felt like I floated out of the wreckage. It had to be I was saved by an angel sent by God.
What about people who die? Why did "God" not help them? This was all covered by Voltaire centuries ago. God does not influence activities in the world.

I don't know who you talk to, but it is people in error. God NEVER causes death; that is an oxymoron against faith, since the whole reason Jesus died on the cross was to overcome death. I received a miracle answer to prayer about this one day, as well, when a family member died. I had previously believed a Word about being saved at the last minute. It didn't seem to happen. I didn't understand. So I prayed for wisdom. The Bible passage then was "I will redeem them from the grave." Jesus is snatching people out of eternal death at the moment they die; & is never the cause of death. He has no heart to impose or wish death. "As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways, says the Lord." I've seen miraculous proof through stunning experience with prayer/ daily Bible devotions (& life application books) giving perfect Words, convincing me of faith, despite earning a science degree & being skeptical.

I feel sorry for the guy who tried to shoot Trump- he was just a young kid with mental health problem that had been bullied probably most of his life. I didn't like Bill mocking him and calling him a loser and the audience laughing at the kids picture. I'm sure he suffered that mockery all his life and that's why he resorted to such extreme behaviour.

As someone from a Soviet culture (now an immigrant in the USA) I believe that the resurrection was staged by the Romans, as explained in a popular book where I'm from - "The Gospel of Afranius"; like many others, I read it in childhood and never thought about this question again - until coming to the USA and noticing a stark contrast in the discussion of this question. After resurrection I I'll concede the changes to character, more authoritative for lack of a better description, can be chalked up to the new role as a divine. Though it doesn't contradict and melds well with the idea of some person just impersonating the dead sect leader to usurp his influence.
Note that I'm not taking everything as truth and am assuming that bits and pieces are true while lots of it is just made up by the authors.
I don't discount the entire thing being false too as telling the story about "Thomas the doubter" works well as a trick of persuasion.
Shutting down doubters in advance by making them empathize with Thomas in the story as if the reader themselves have seen the proof rather than just seeing a *story* of someone who has seen proof.
It's similar to a trick used by pyramid schemes in modern day, present a testimony by a 'doubting customer who was then convinced' makes it subconsciously feel as if anything you saw the evidence the doubter saw, yourself.

No we don’t lol. We have been able to harness some of nature’s power and even predict it, but we still have no idea what things like electricity, gravity, and magnetism actually are. In the plus side humanity just scratching the surface of possible knowledge already improved our lives dramatically, so imagine what we could do with even a 1% mastery of the natural world. This idea that science has things more or less already figured out and that we just need to tend to the minor details needs to die, there is a tremendous amount of work ahead and with every step forward it becomes harder and harder to avoid a major backslide.

The question about the existence of what we've been calling a Creator God has to start with "Is there other intelligent Life in the Universe"? I would venture to say "Yes, most certainly!". WE are floating around "Out There" in a world that is an anomaly as far as we can see. As an analogy IF you see one rat, you can be sure there are many more you don't see. That's very logical. And if so, can they be much, much, more advanced than us? Also, YES! They could be a very old and very advance Super Power much like the USA compared to a primitive tribe running around naked in the jungle. My guess is that what we call God is not Supernatural or Magical... but a very, very, advanced Technological Race!
The first book of the Bible (Genesis) states that God is not of this planet and that He came here from "Out There" and terraformed a watery and dark planet to hold Life that He (they) created... just as our current Scientists hope to do on another Lifeless planet much in the same way as Genesis describes in the Bible. Of course it wasn't done in 6 "Days" as we know them, but rather in 6 Stages, Epochs, or Ages that could have taken a very long, long time. After it was all set in motion the Life forms that God created culminated in the creation of Man and then an altered companion for him called Woman (womb man?) to take care of it. It should be obvious now that we didn't do that and are actually busily killing it (our Home) in our Hubristic arrogance.
Because of our treacherous nature and disobedience God basically left us on own own and said He would be back one day (the Biblical Harvest at the end of this Age) to get rid of the worst of us and keep the best of us! As Herbert Armstrong of the "Worldwide Church of God" once put it... God is growing his "Sons" (children) down here and has an abode somewhere else in Space that we call Heaven! Like Earth, but a place of even greater Beauty, Peace and Love rather than Decay, War and Hate. This all sounds very logical to me as sort of climbing the Evolutionary Ladder... whether people believe it to be true - or not.
IMO... Aliens are mentioned in the Bible. The good ones were called Angels (Messengers and Protectors of God and His Creation) and the bad ones were called Demons (Gods Opposers and His Creation's Destroyers). They were depicted with wings because they had the ability of flight when man didn't. When God said: "You shall have no other Gods before Me" it was a stern warning about the bad Aliens... or in other words: "The Fallen Angels" spoken about in the Book of Enoch that left their abode in the Heavens to come down here to infect the Human Race! That explains a lot of things...

When I tried to get 'help' from 'the' system, I was only severely harmed, with problems growing, that ultimately led to quitting church. This was all despite having become a Christian as a teen, & such a strong heart of faith, I initially studied ministry in college (then science). I ended up in a faith struggle, & faith won in my life, only because of miracles, not ministry of people or my own reasoning. One miracle, for example, came from praying that I felt failed/ harmed in healing therapy, which led to trouble. After prayer about this, I read a daily Bible devotion/ life application Word, & it was EXACTLY about a woman FAILED IN THERAPY, but then God helping & healing her! MY EXACT prayer! I've seen a gazillion such stunning, miraculous answers to prayer. So my faith is real, living, life saving, my whole life (even my art career goal came from a prayer/ calling). So I have nothing to argue about. It is the best thing that ever happened to me. God is not people's problem, He is their solution. If they realized who the loving, helping, caring, healing, providing, strengthening, peace giving God/ Jesus really is, they'd see there's nothing to fight. Peace. Blessings. Love wins.

@@JohnJ469 A) I'm Canadian, not American, but a long-time follower of American politics as it is consequential to us; B) as a Catholic, I am asking a genuine question (and providing here a question that others may ask to family/friends/neighbours) about the other side of the coin. A man was killed that day, at the hand of an extremely troubled Republican. Why is God being dragged into this?? Because DJT's followers want to believe that he's ordained as the American saviour. I don't believe that to be the case, I think it's a wild notion, it's insulting and divisive, and it deserves a push back.
C) DJT is everything I don't want in a leader (in general) and especially what I don't want south of the boarder. He is erratic, vindictive and vengeful, a deep misogynist, serial cheater in business and relationships (and golf), a fraudster, an aloof father, a bully, a malignant narcissist, election denier, authoritarian sympathiser, authoritarian wannabe, deeply incompetent regarding trade and international relations (evidenced by dealing with the Taliban and not the Afghani gov., that he *still* doesn't know what tarifs are, etc...), the Dunning-Kreuger effect is not something I want on display daily from any President/PM...

Likewise, Trump's involvement in politics serves to normalise hateful, corrupting rhetoric, and normalise the fact that he is someone who's been privileged by enormous wealth as he sidesteps legal accountability. I am a Christian who has experienced miracles (& also earned a science degree), yet I can also agree that some of this commentary is ALSO valid. Christianity is an issue of faith, not an EXACT scientific method, & there is a reason God operates His world this way. Otherwise, there would be no purpose in the path of faith the Bible talks about. JESUS cared HUGE about FAITH. Yet, I agree that the digressions Maher pointed out are ridiculous, with toast, & looking for signs everywhere. Yet, I can tell you, I've experienced such astonishing answers to prayer through daily Bible devotions, that it has been near conversational, & certainly miraculous. A big example: the day I prayed (after many such miracles) I had fear Jesus might be a myth, & I don't want to 'throw' my life away, that day, the verse in my daily Bible devotion was the ONLY passage in the whole Bible, that assures explicitly, Jesus is NOT a myth! 2 Peter 1: 16-19. This kind of PERFECT Word has continued for 25 years, YET, there is also an element of distance/ not FULL communication. And at times, i've been unsure. That doesn't mean real answers don't happen. (Another example: the day I prayed why my dad was lying sick in a hospital bed, lingering with cancer, not dying, not healing, the title of my Bible devotion that day was "LINGERING BEFORE DEATH"!! I could give you SO many examples of such PERFECT DETAILED match between prayer/ Bible devotions, that is totally different than Jesus toast. (I learned to only seek God in Bible resources). Another example: it was confirmed 20 times, to be an artist, EVERY single time I asked if it was true, my daily Bible devotion would speak of artists! over the course of YEARS. I prayed for inconveniencing someone when my bike broke down & I was provided a ride; the Bible based Word I read spoke about being provided a ride! in a rough situation. So as much as Bill Maher thinks he is so 'with it,' he does not know the experience of every person on this earth with faith/ the Bible, & I can assure you he is in error in his spiritual blindness/ rebellion. On a road trip, despite a stack of books at my feet, I could not read; something happened to me, that I could not stop obsessively praying for our safety. This was absolutely, total freak, out of the ordinary for me; & has never happened again in decades. I was even lying back in the seat, with a blanket over my head, praying for our safety. At one point, I sat up, head between the 2 front seats, looking at the driver, & saw him fall asleep, heading off the road, into the massive, grassy median, in Kentucky, with NO protective guard rails on either side of the freeway, going over 70 mph. I was able to scream his name, wake him up, direct him to the side of the road, & then take over driving. I am confident it was a spiritual experience, that I could not stop an urge to pray for 1.5 days, (& had not told the driver or anyone); when I desperately had wanted to read my stack of books at my feet! I was in agony, yet felt a mental oppression/ obsession to pray, & it proved true!
p.s. I've not been a Trumpster. In reality, the Bible tells of a God who wanted to be the 'king' of his people, rather than giving a human king. Trump really lost me with opposing our last election, without seeming to need real life evidence for the claims. It is dysfunctional to the max. But not all Christians join this dysfunction.
One day I walked through a grocery store, oppressed by an obsessive thought I would lose my job. I always avoid long lines, but could find no way out this day, so I grabbed a magazine off the rack to read something. I had no idea I had grabbed a Bible based magazine. I just happened to open exactly to a page titled, "For when you lose your job."

I honestly remember having to walk away from someone during a conversation about the "steel beam cross" in the rubble on 9/11.
Nearly 3000 people killed that day and they were arguing that God couldn't intervene to stop it, but yes, he could leave a cross behind for people to see.
It's VERY hard not to feel angry when trying to have a reasonable conversation with someone like that.

I was in a terrible car wreck. My tibia was broken, my femur split in half from the top to the bottom. My pelvis was broken in 2 places. My hip dislocated. The bundle of nerves that goes down through your leg was damaged. Part of my calf muscle died where it was pinned against the seat's frame. My heart was restarted twice. I was trapped in the car for an hour. I was life flighted 75 miles to the nearest trama hospital. I had 4 surgeries and spent 2 months in the hospital and went through 6 months of physical therapy. I lost an entire week of memory around the accident.
After the fact, my trama surgeon told me not many survive the injuries I had. For years I struggled with the memory loss and why I survived. Nothing could explain why it felt like I floated out of the wreckage. It had to be I was saved by an angel sent by God.
What about people who die? Why did "God" not help them? This was all covered by Voltaire centuries ago. God does not influence activities in the world.

@@CraftyF0X Read 1 Corinthians chapter 15 in the Bible, which makes it clear that death is the ultimate enemy of God. God doesn't have anything to do with making death happen. I don't know who you talk to, but it is people in error. God NEVER causes death; that is an oxymoron against faith, since the whole reason Jesus died on the cross was to overcome death. I received a miracle answer to prayer about this one day, as well, when a family member died. I had previously believed a Word about being saved at the last minute. It didn't seem to happen. I didn't understand. So I prayed for wisdom. The Bible passage then was "I will redeem them from the grave." Jesus is snatching people out of eternal death at the moment they die; & is never the cause of death. He has no heart to impose or wish death. He is the bright light in the tunnel people see at death, that overcomes evil & turns it to good. The fact is, we are all here on earth temporarily, for spiritual purposes. "As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways, says the Lord." I've seen miraculous proof through stunning experience with prayer/ daily Bible devotions (& life application books) giving perfect Words, convincing me of faith, despite earning a science degree & being skeptical.

When I grew up religion was a private matter, should have stayed that way. Can't stomach anyone who throws in their self-religion. They are the idiots among us.

He gave him the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, not the other apostles, not me or you! The Pope as the successor of St. Peter has that authority, just as bishops have the fullness of the holy order, as successors of the apostles, by the laying on of hands, as apostles when they choose new ones! So that is the teaching of Christ. I guess we know which heresies the Church has proclaimed in the last couple of hundred years! So are dogmas that are immutable Truths of faith! So you could broaden your horizons a bit, read from Saint Augustine, On the State of God, for example, De Civtage Dei, but also the catechism of the Catholic Church, church fathers, apologists, church teachers, because we are not the smartest, especially when we put our I in the center of ourselves, your self-love, not God's everything! When we die to ourselves, we begin to live! When the original powers of the soul are the main ones, which are reason, memory and will! When they are united with Christ! And not when we are led by base passions and lusts of the flesh, the world and the devil! I am a theologian, psychologist, philosopher, who has been involved in exorcism rituals for 20 years. When you see that spiritual reality, then you see that you are not the one who knows everything by yourself! Of course, suffering and pain are egoistic and direct us to ourselves, as we see here, when they mock not cults, not false prophets, but the Virgin Mary, when everything is mocked, because a person is his own "God" and thinks he knows everything and that it is non-progressive, where it breaks God's first commandment by falling into idolatry! Just as the body cannot live without water and drink, so the soul cannot live without God, it is spiritually dead! Therefore, whoever does not feed on the Body and Blood does not have life in him, he is spiritually dead, and then so are animals, carrying low passions, belittling others to elevate himself, because he feels fulfilled only when he belittles another, which shows what lives in him and what is it full of!
