As a Palestinian who legally immigrated to American 17 years ago.. I never thought I’d see this on American TV.. it made me cry and reminded me of all of my childhood trauma living under the occupation in the west bank.. THANK you for speaking up and to your team for gathering all this info and showing it in 30 mins.
You have me in tears. I'm happy you made it to the U.S. but also my deepest condolences to anyone you or your fellow countrymen have lost through this clear genoc1de. I have called my representatives here to tell them to call for the UN to stop vetoing resolutions condemning Israel's actions as war crimes. I have written a couple letters telling different depts of government to stop sending money to Israel. I don't know much more I can do but hope💔
In this era of media, it means a lot that John Oliver and HBO put this episode out. Thank you for having the courage to say what so few in your position are willing to say.
@@isaacarthur8523 it's lies though...what they didn't mention: 1. Yaakov is a settler and Israel is who took her house and gave it to a settlement authority; that house will not be hers even if he leaves. Israel woupd send soldiers to force them out. They made him look like a moron for stating this truth but he coupd have ran off and called for IDF immediately. She owes Yaakov her life. 2. This woman shared a home with a terrorist who committed murder. In Israel, common sense applies...if one terrorist is in a home where others live, they are likely also involved in terrorism. So the law is that the home of a terrorist is seized and all its occupants evicted. This is a good deterrent to people who only fear their Skyatollah.
One of the most important episodes you've ever done John. Never stop doing shat you're doing. Always reveal the ugly truths about your own country and government, and always make a stand and fight for truth, justice, and morality.
Perhaps: maybe needed a follow up about Jordan where 3 million folk of Palestinian heritage live. The is much Media reports about artillery barrages, fighting and aerial bombardments there ... Do you know why?
WOW. THANK YOU. As a palestinian citizen in the west bank, every second of this was like pulling the deepest scars out of my soul. I literally felt lighter after watching this.
He's just collecting the journalism of others and packaging it in an entertaining way to make it less utterly depressing. His writers and researchers do a great job, but that journalism is already done by the outlets that are quoted in this piece (such as Vice news). I think it's important to remember that.
If only this would be applied to Jews of any diaspora background outside of that land. Instead, the guilt-ridden Western far left and even Islamists pretend to only target “European” Jews…like, you sure you’re okay with someone from Iraq or Iran stealing your house just because those countries are in the “ummah”?
And this guy is a New Yorker. He’s from probably the safest homeland for Jews in the world, but he left there to move to the West Bank and steal her home. And there are interviews with this guy and he says the reason he did it is because he wants to help in the effort to plant more Jews in the West Bank. So, he wants to help increase the Jewish population to overwhelm the Palestinian population. He wasn’t oppressed and fleeing persecution. He was fleeing safety for a much less safe place, just to help Israelis displace Palestinians.
@@susanferguson5635There was so much information I was not fully aware of. It was mind blowing! I appreciate John and his amazing team! It breaks my heart those children live in fear!
When prophet Mohamed was in his 50s, he married a 6-year old girl called Aïsha. The marriage was "consummated" when she was 9. In other words, he r4aped a 9-year old child. How that fringe cult still gets to be a major religion is something of a mystery. Maybe the media should talk about that 🤷♂
I've seen The Daily Show also do a good job of covering how poorly Israel treats Palestinians. If you didn't know about any of the BS Israel has been doing pretty much since the Jews took over Israel, they would probably seem to be completely innocent. But when you have Jewish people in both America and Israel protesting this horrific war, which has gone far past retaliation, that should tell you something. And the right has the nerve to call them anti-Semitic. They're flipping Jewish! The only anti-Semitic Jew I am aware of is Stephen Miller and he's on their side.
Mainstream media is too scared to report on the truth or be critical of Israel because they know they'll be labeled as anti-Semitic by mouthbreathers and politicians. We're truly fortunate to have someone like John who isn't scared.
Years ago I worked with a Palestinian guy & we became friends. He’d lost count how many times he’d heard from his family & friends still living in the West Bank that their crops had been destroyed by settlers or yet another person had been driven out of their home by them while the IDF stood by & did nothing. Yet as sad & frustrated as he sounded during our chats about what was happening he was never filled with hate. I know he’d hoped to move back to Palestine at some point so as of now I don’t even know if he & his wife & kids are still alive.
A rare occurence in US media, an impossible occurence elsewhere - saldy. I am Italian and there's zero discussion about that in mainstream media. Our position is basically US position, and EU doesn't count for anything but commerce
Just because you go to shitty outlets does not condemn everyone, it just means you go to shitty. The Associated Press and Reuters both covered this before Oliver.. You are the problem. YOU and your lack of responsibility for what media you consume.
@@alee3079 He has also frequently cited American outlets like the Associated Press Reuters, and most important, local newspapers,as the most important part of his research. All American.
@@louurich9087 It’s truly amazing how people complain about the media when all the information they seek is readily available and accessible if they just took the time to read. All of Oliver’s segments are well researched through reputable news outlets yet some people will still cry foul because they heard something from a friend’s sister, who’s uncle (twice removed) heard something from his girlfriend’s niece. The problem isn’t the media; it’s the lazy consumers not bothering to actually follow up on what was reported.
Yuppie-Hipster Colonial Settlers of the “Wild Eastern Frontier” is got to be the strangest recreation of Old West American Manifest Destiny I’ve ever seen. Especially in the context of the 21st century where you surely think such things to be barbaric relics of the past.
It's surprising, but not once you think about it. The very foundation of America is based on manifest destiny. That makes it ok! Just colonize with a smile, and you're good to go!
I have not watched LWT for about a year. I was surprised to see this produced in the US. I have nothing to add but this needs to be viewed by more people and comments drive the algo.
John Oliver. You should be proud. You are a man of courage when the world needs it and has so little of it. You should be very proud for making the world a little better.
@@aaabbb-py5xdyou'd think, but weirdly, anti-apartheid isn't the safe position. A lot of money and force goes into attempts to shield Israel from valid criticism of their two-tiered system. Not even to mention the ongoing genocide I imagine you'll downplay
@@slashb7836 So think again. John Oliver was too happy to take on the distraction that is West Bank, just so he can cowardly hide behind an image of courage, one which has already been permitted by the "free world" for purposes of appearance and propaganda
@@slashb7836”Valid criticism” is fine, Israeli citizens are critical of the Israeli government more than anyone else. They have the right to do so. The issue starts when an unfair “golden standard” is reserved for Israel that apparently doesn’t apply elsewhere. The lands of Judea and Samaria are now known as the “West Bank,” which refers to West of the Jordan River - a name given to the territory after the illegal Jordanian annexation of it in 1950, followed by Jewish ethnic cleansing, destruction of synagogues, a large influence of Palestinian-Arab refugees (following the war started by the Arab League and championed by the Nazi-collaborating Palestinian Grand Mufti), and then Jordan citizenship was applied to Palestinians. None of that was mentioned in this segment. The very idea of the Fourth Geneva Convention is to maintain the pre-existing sociopolitical status of the land until a mutual agreement can be made. Before 1967, the land was illegally annexed by Jordan. Before that, it was under British Mandate. One could argue that the Arabs were offered the “West Bank” per the UN Partition Plan. They rejected this outright (as regretted by Arafat.) Of course, the Palestinians have additionally rejected sovereignty on numerous occasions - 2000 Camp David Summit, 2001 Taba Summit, 2008 Olmert Plan, and the Kerry Initiative, to name a few. Not to mention that the PLO agreed to full Israeli military and planning control over Zone C per Oslo Accords (which didn’t mention settlements once.)
John has some MAJOR BALLS for doing this show 😮 props to him for showing something MANY in his industry would be cancelled so quickly for even whispering about.
You're insane. Every show or TV channel you turn on is Israel Palestine. No one gave a crap about Syria or Yemen, but right now with the Jews you can't take a dump without hearing at least one neighbor's house outside your window with the TV on to Israel. Palestine the victim mentality here is next level
Land was captured from Jordan. Land is not taken from Palestinians. International law states: land is occupied if it's taken from a sovereign. Jordan is no longer claiming the land. You can only call the land called West Bank a disputed territory at best. Israel has the exclusive right to dispose of the land as it wishes. The land is the undisputed historical Jewish sovereign ancestral Homeland since 3,000 years ago. A thousand years before the first muslim arab ever walked the earth.
@@davidcohen6742 international law literally recognizes Palestine. you really pulled this out your ass. and using you dumbass logic international law also states that all land taken at gunpoint is inadmissible, which mean all of israel is illegal considering it was taken at gun point after international law was written.
Thank you, John, for having more moral courage and journalistic integrity than any other person in your position. Great job to the whole team. This is why you deserve all the Emmys. Maybe someday the rest of the media outlets will figure out we do actually want the truth.
People can’t handle the truth. That’s the problem. If the truth was more profitable (meaning more fun/gossipy/interesting) then so many more outlets would do it. But it’s not and only passion (hatred) runs this country because most politicians don’t care about anything but pandering towards the hatred.
Yeah. I left MSNBC, CNN, Colbert & Meyer for good. Not worth it. You gotta have minimum standards. The more you research this issue, it keeps getting exponentially worse. It's no wonder they want to appeal to "it's very confusing". They know that if you engage with the issue, you'll see how wrong they are.
24:47 That guy did his homework there, when he talks about dignity being non-negotiable, because he was talking to a German delegation. And the first article of the German constituation says 'Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority.'

Btw this clip is from a great documentary. Watch it!
Indeed. It was expressly made to be the very first article of the Grundgesetz, to prevent something like the Holocaust from happening again. I am German, and I interpret the "Nie Wieder!" "Never Again!" in the second interpretation, namely: that never again should such horrors like the Holocaust to befall *anyone, anywhere around the globe.* Frankly, that is the *only* legitimate interpretation of that phrase. Anyone saying that it only means "never again should someone like the Holocaust happen to Jewish people" is betraying the very concept of it. For whats the point of singling out just one group of people, while others are then left to suffer?
3:12, is when John O. starts his history monologue from the moment Israel was founded n started their war of independence, that concluded on the 6 day war. Where "THEY TOKE THIER LAND BACK" and some more from Egypt n Jordan that they later give back with a Peace Treaty (that they have abided by since then). Palestinian people were the one living on Jewish people land that was taken from them by the Romans, In the early 2nd century CE, the Roman province of Judaea was renamed Syria Palaestina ("Palestinian Syria"). Israel became legitimize by their Independence on 14 May 1948, while Palestine has not, n since then Israel after the war has coexisted with the Palestinians that were living on the Jewish people land. There are more Palestinians living in harmony with Israeli people, been part of their government, while 1/3 of Palestinians do to Religious believe and heat-treat towards Israel outright calling for the death of all Israelis n the Palestinians that support them. With the implementation of the plan, IDF installations and forces were removed and over 9000 Israeli citizens living in 25 settlements were evicted. By 22 September 2005, Israel's withdrawal from the entire Gaza Strip to the 1967 Green Line, and the eviction of the four settlements in Samaria, was completed. Israel after been force by the USA for peace chose to give Gaza to Palestinians for them to run n they voted for HAMAS a terrorist's organization branched from ISIS leaders that have been living inside Gaze for years causing more attacks n violence in the area. As of today the Gaza Strip is governed by the Hamas Terrorist Group that was elected on 2016 after a strong misleading campaign of misinformation n lies about their beliefs that they said has changed to a more moderate one that were all lies. Soon the majority over 60%-70% of Palestinian people disagree with the actions n beliefs of their government but were not capable n Hamas remains in power on the Gaza Strip were only Islamic Palestinians (40% of all residents are children) n 0 (zero) Judaims Israeli people live or reside. While on the Israeli side is been governed by a leaders that despite n also hate the Palestinian people and every USA President since Bill Clinton has said that after many meetings, peace talks, n agreements signed they all believe they don’t want peace n seen peaceful agreement were forced on them. Also like on the Gaza N West Bank the residents n citizens of Israel disapprove of their own government with a 65%-75% of them wanting to remove them from power but after multiple close election they haven’t been able to do it. Specially unlike Palestinians controlled lands Israeli people are welcome of their Palestinians people with nearly 2 million of Palestinians (20% of the residents n citizens) living on Israeli controlled land together n in peace not counting the 3 million in the West Bank and 2 million in the Gaza Strip. Just as in any war, civilians on both sides were killed in 1948. But there are no reputable sources to support Oliver’s hyperbolic claim of Israeli “massacres of entire villages.” It’s difficult to disprove a claim this vague that is asserted without naming any specific villages or sources, but many such claims have been shown to be fabrications.
Wow, I have just gotten to 7:05 and I was thinking wow, the West Bank sounds just like the United States. Take the existing population and shove them into a few regions, put the military around them and then move outsiders in to take over and build suburbs and universities.
Idk how they keep letting this man come on national TV and speak these truths. But he’s about the only one on mainstream Western media saying this stuff and the people definitely appreciate it. Salute, John Oliver 🫡
As a Canadian who volunteered in the West Bank, I can confirm the truth of this report. The reality of the Israeli occupation, settlement, and apartheid is indeed like this, even worse.
Whenever I hear an Israeli say "Nobody was using this land" I have to stop and determine if they meant literally nobody, or "Some Palestinians were here, but they don't count as people."
A bit of both. They most likely mean a Palestinian (who doesn't count as a person) owns the land, but there's no house or building on that particular part of the land. Yah know, or they just mean they'll take their house like Yosef cause "nobody's using it".
It has the same energy as how Australia was declared ‘Terra nullius’ despite the fact people had been living there longer than England had been around.
@@--enyo-- It's almost comical how incredibly short-sighted zionists must be to so openly give away their settler ideology every time they mock Palestine's political status pre-1948. It's the exact same line of thinking that Spain, Portugal, Belgium, UK, France, Germany, and many others applied throughout the globe for decades. Whenever they encountered people who didn't live under their interpretation of a nation-state, they didn't consider them as such. The fallacy followed shortly after: if those people were technically 'nothing,' then that piece of land wasn't really theirs. It didn't matter that people had been living there for generations, because in their minds, they had already rationalized that the land was free real estate for them to take
A cousin of mine described seeing the women in labor being stuck at the wall being one of the most horrifying things she saw during her time there. I'm glad to see this being discussed on a mainstream platform.

When a “comedy” show actually has more backbone than actual news. The tone has always been balanced in all the fight ways. Thanks to John Oliver and HBO for letting the truth be out there.
Comedians have often told the truth that the main stream was not willing to tell. Comedians are usually the biggest truth tellers because they can hide the truth within a joke to make it more consumable. Most "news" stations you watch are not there to tell you the truth, they are there to tell you the truth according to the people who pay their salaries.
Exactly! What’s becoming so obvious to people now is that colonialism has never ended just rebranded with different terms. From Natives indigenous people being called “savages” in the old days to now being called “terrorist” by neocolonialists who are neoliberals, neoconservatives, and zionist. 1) Savages is now “terrorist” 2) Civilizing them is now “bringing them democracy” We can all see Israel is a colonial project being supported by former and current colonials such as U.S, UK, and others who also control territories of indigenous natives in Caribbean Islands, Pacific Islands, Hawaii, and many more. The liberation of Palestine will definitely give RISE to many indigenous natives around the world to free themselves from western domination. This is the underlying ripple effect that the U.S government and its puppet allies don’t want to happen.
@@thinkbeforeyoutype7106 Palestine won't accept liberation or statehood or a two state solution as long as Israel exists. They would rather stay in the situation that they are in than have to recognize Israel. Their intense sociopathic hatred of the Jewish people prevents them from thinking of anything other than destroying Israel. They even say so in the very first paragraph of their constitution. Palestine and Hamas wish they could genocide Israel but they don't have the means. Israel has the means but there are still a lot of Palestinians living. It begs the question who's genociding who? Still I've yet to hear anyone protest the oppression of women in Palestine and pretty much every other Arab Muslim country. Oppression isn't even the right word for that, oppression is a gross understatement. Not one person has mentioned that, except Bill Maher.
“During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.” ― George Orwell. How awesome to see a media outlet not afraid to speak the truth - truly awesome. Bravo!!! I don't even know how to express how much respect I have for John Oliver for speaking the truth, in so very much, but especially here. Thank you so much Last Week Tonight, you hold a light in these dark times.
Oliver is a woke person, thus everything he says is a form of misinformation or straight lie. Taking the side of Hamas is nothing special, unless it's hidden.
@suereed3474 Right! Because Israel does not have any kind of money making schemes anywhere. That kind of influence comes mainly from the likes of John Oliver. Gimme an f'ing break...
These opinions aren’t controversial at all though - he’s basically pandering to a leftist base. It’s easy money. And I would put this in the deceit camp, not the revolutionary act category. It actually serves as propaganda. Most of the conclusions here are completely, objectively wrong. Almost everything is out of context. And it’s all wrapped up in humor to make it seem somehow obvious. For example, it is not “hypocritical to prevent Palestinians from building on their land” because it is not their land. Israel was invaded and during the course of that war, they took this land. It is theirs now. They have every right to “occupy” or control it. Don’t like it? Stop waging wars against them.
Actually the best journalism right now. I hope this doesn't cause him problems. Can't believe how everybody is just watching this happen and even try to justify it.
"It's about dignity. And [...] dignity is something not negotiable. Right?" He had to say that to a delegation from GERMANY, whose constitution literally begins with the words: "Human dignity is untouchable."
I think we have reached the point of absurdity where we have to seek agreement on basic things like: do we agree that torturing and killing civilians is a crime?! It's like we live in an idiocracy
"Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar, sie zu achten und zu schützen ist Verpflichtung jeder staatlichen Gewalt". It's such a shame that Premier Minister Netanjahu ignores the wish for negotiations. Wow, imagine that ! I guess Germany is the only fucking country which its Constitution includes these affirmations ! And that it's version probably doesn't date back from after a certain year in the 20th century. As a German citizen who takes the phrase "Never again" very seriously (in the second interpretation), I'm appalled by what the Israeli government uses that phrase for. It has bugged me for years now that every bit of criticism against Netanjahu has been deemed antisemitic. A position that not only the Israeli government supports, but many Germans, too. And let me be clear on that: No, it isn't! On the other hand, what Netanjahu's government does is anti-human. We have far too many people over here that think they are on the right side of history when they blindly support Israel's actions, no matter what.
as a German I am totally appalled by this show full of factual errors. I would have expected better from John Oliver and will be more cautious from now on watching his shows. There is no genocide happening neither in GAZA nor in the westbank. The westbank has a birth rates of 2,7 children per woman and there are about 2,5 million Palestinians in the Westbank now a little less than in GAZA - so no GENOCIDE by any means. They need the children to feed the terror teams I suppose. Terror that is raining down on Israel since forever when all Israel ever wanted was good neighborly relations. They even have this in their founding document. Unlike HAMAS - I guess by now everybody knows what the HAMAS charta says. All the numbers of victims in GAZA come from HAMAS and cannot be trusted and the hostages are still not free. Netanyahu is a terrible corrupt politician but this war is just and is a fight for ISRAELS survival. The settlements are not a breach of international law.........
As another German, I'm shocked to realize that so many Germans seem to have learned the wrong lesson from our history. Many seem to have just internalized that we were the bad guys and because of that we need to defend Israel at all costs to show the (western) world that we are now the good guys. People like to see the world in black and white. They like to see themselves on the side of good. So everybody who opposes Israel is evil and deserves to be oppressed and even their destruction is justified. Many don't see the palestinians as people. They see them all as terrorists, which makes it easier to defend Israel. They like to believe that Israeli's are righteous, therefore can't do any wrong, because their people used to be victims of Nazi Germany. Because of that they are given a blank check to do as they please. And anybody who dares even critisize them is silenced with the knockout argument "anti-semite". They don't care if the criticism is unjust or just. They won't allow any criticism, they'll defend Israel even when they kill thousands of children. It's not even really about the Jews, it's really about siding with those you were taught to side with no matter what. We were made to believe that Israel is one of us, one we have an obligation to defend no matter what, to make up for our history. It's so ironic, Germans are so afraid to be called anti-semites or Nazis, that they've become blind to Israel having turned into a fascist nation. The real lesson to be learned from the holocaust was that fascism of no kind should ever be tolerated again. Not even the former victims of the Nazis should get the right to become like them and should be opposed if they do. All that said, people who attack random Jews who have nothing to do with what Israel does are not to be tolerated either. Those people don't help the cause of palestinians. The people who now use the opportunity to let their hatred of Jews loose, they are no better than those who side with Israel. You all need to see that there are people on both sides. Try to see people as people for once. Both sides have good and bad people, because in the they are all just people. This cycle of hatred needs to be stopped.
Saving this episode immediately. This moment in time, when he gave a loud voice to those of us in the U.S. who feel like what's going on is so wrong, should be cherished.
The biggest irony is that around the world the always taught in schools that gen.ocide is not supposed to happen to anyone. I don't think I have ever heard the phrase, gen.ocide should never happen to the Je.wish people. That's completely new for me. Protection from gen.ocide was never supposed to be applied only for a specific ra.ce or relig.ion. But fine if they really wanna promote this idea thinking they will gain global respect or special treatment this way let them.

I said no way John Oliver will go this far in saying the truth and not lose his job or life. I guess i was wrong. Just wow. This is beyond anything i expected. Thank you John, from my hometown in South East Nigeria.
What is x?? And honestly I feel disappointed in John, the way he keeps calling what's happening in Gaza a "war" when it's not a fight between two armies, but Israel systemically killing thousands of civilians He also keeps calling the October attack horrific and an inciting incident, as if that moment exists in a vacuum, and if what Israel has done isn't the actual inciting incident, and isn't a thousand times more violent
Finally!!! This episode brought me to tears. As a Palestinian-American who was born and raised in the States, I grew up thinking the 'radical' Palestinians were always provoking the 'peaceful' Israelis. I am ashamed to say I was embarrassed to even say I was Palestinian to all my American friends. The media had me believing that the oppressed were the oppressors. The media had me believing that my people were terr.orists. When I moved to Palestine and saw with my own eyes the reality of the situation, my mind was blown by the injustice. I just wanted to scream to the world 'what you are seeing on the news is a lie!!' Thank you from the bottom of my heart to John Oliver and his team for being the voice of the oppressed. 🙏
I'm with you! And I'm so grateful that John Oliver has displayed how it's our own delusional, religious zealotry that is making us do these insane, destructive and heart-breaking things. "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive." (W.Scott) We've deceived ourselves until we believe our own nonsense. We've been doing it for generations. We've enshrined the right of free speech to trump our innate right of the dignity of just having leaders who do not lie to our faces while we enthusiastically march our civilization towards the cliff. This is how all civilization ends: "with thundering applause." (G. Lucas)
I can not articulate the respect I have for you guys for putting out this episode in today’s political climate. As someone who’s been involved in this conflict since my early teens, about 15 years now, I feel increasingly isolated with the idea of a peaceful and just future. It pains me a lot to see how hate and backwardness has taken over even the younger generations of Jews and Israelis, which I once saw as the new hope, those who could make a change. So thank you for this, it’s really important.
And older ones like me, too. We just haven’t shifted the mainstream political debate…yet. Unfortunately, millions of Palestinians are suffering in the mean time.
I was listening to an interview with John Oliver today where he was saying he doesn’t see himself as a journalist. For me, journalism is shining the light of truth wherever it is dark. You’re sprung John Oliver. Journalism of the finest kind.
That’s because US news are a joke, in it to make money, so they stupify their audience with day-trading polls, horse-race election coverage and he-said-she-said political bullshit. John Oliver actually addresses policy that is screwing us, and it’s hard to watch without his jokes.
This piece is important because of its reach, but there are tons of dedicated people covering this - Owen Jones, Al Jazeera (now banned in Israel), HasanAbi, TrueAnon, The Intercept, Secular Talk, Mondoweiss, Jacobin, Bellingcat, Middle East Eye, North Star Radio, GDF, Yugopnik, Electronic Intifada... and Noah Samsen did a jawdropping piece on "war crime Tik Toks"
It never ceases to amaze me that these comedians are more effective at conveying such crucial information to the ostensibly comatose American public than the supposed serious news media. Well done Mr Oliver.
It never ceases to amaze me how easily activists worship and self-righteously delude each other. There is no occupation. The Arab legion occupied and created the existence of the "West Bank," which undoubtedly belongs to Israel under the international law principle, Uti Possidentis Juris. Israel liberated the land when they were yet again attacked from it. What year do you imagine Israel "occupied" Palestina
@@Bam6a What say you we start with 1917 when the eminently corruptible English aristocracy caved in to Zionist pressure from the Rothschilds and decided it was more preferable to have the ‘dirty’ scheming Jews encamped in far away Palestine than in London’s East End, where they could be made useful in continuing the fading empire’s destabilising efforts to better control the neophyte Arab Kingdoms?
So actively horrific... Now that I think of it... "Why didn't USA annex all of Mexico in 1848" by history matters on UA-cam is a 3min video, and after seeing this West Bank video, it's scary to imagine how similar this could have been had it not been for that one man...

My husband is a coin collector and he has a Palestinian coin from around 1910 I believe. How is it that Palestine used to be a nation, but now has no nation status? it breaks my heart.
@@DK-zu6ttSheer ignorance. “Palestine” was never a sovereign state - never a country nor a nation. It was a name for a territory, simple as that. It isn’t even a country now. The territory was occupied by various empires - for instance, the Ottomans occupied the territory of “Palestine” between 1516-1918, then the British. The “Palestinians,” of course, have also rejected statehood and sovereignty proposals many, many times - UN Partition Plan (which Arafat himself said was a mistake,) 2000 Camp David Summit, 2001 Taba Summit, 2008 Olmert Plan, and Kerry Initiative, to name a few. The “Palestinians” have no interest in ending any sort of occupation - it doesn’t fit in with their victim narrative which they’ve exploited financially and politically (to their own peoples’ detriment.)

There ist more to the dignity thing the guy said to the German diplomats. The very first sentence of the German constitution ist: "The human dignity shall be inviolable." I still love that sentence.
then the German government proceeds to sell weapons to Israel during their massacre in Gaza and imprison hundreds of people just for carrying Palestinian flags... so much for a Constitution 🤡

Israeli settlers living literally above Palestinians and throwing things down on them is such a blunt visual metaphor for apartheid if you read it in a book you'd critique it for being to on the nose.
The majority of Palestinians in the West Bank will happily admit that they would reverse the situation and enjoy it. The difference is that far-right Israeli settlers are a minority in Israel.

All of Oliver’s segments are well researched through reputable news outlets yet some people will still cry foul because they heard something from a friend’s sister, who’s uncle (twice removed) heard something from his girlfriend’s niece. Indeed. It was expressly made to be the very first article of the Grundgesetz, to prevent something like the Holocaust from happening again.

I took a seminar on Native Americans last semester and nearly all of the things John Oliver has talked about seem eerily familiar
Its modern colonialism 101.

Whenever I hear an Israeli say "Nobody was using this land" I have to stop and determine if they meant literally nobody, or "Some Palestinians were here, but they don't count as people."
You know which one it is
A bit of both.
@@--enyo-- Exactly what I was thinking watching this.

Pieces like this one are why John Oliver, and team, have earned their awards. I appreciate this work so much. You make it "digestible." Again, great work.
1) Savages is now “terrorist”
2) Civilizing them is now “bringing them democracy”
We can all see Israel is a colonial project being supported by former and current colonials such as U.S, UK, and others who also control territories of indigenous natives in Caribbean Islands, Pacific Islands, Hawaii, and many more.
The liberation of Palestine will definitely give RISE to many indigenous natives around the world to free themselves from western domination. This is the underlying ripple effect that the U.S government and its puppet allies don’t want to happen.
Not really new, even in midevil times it would at least occasionally require listening to the fool to get to know the truth.
@@thinkbeforeyoutype7106
Palestine won't accept liberation or statehood or a two state solution as long as Israel exists.
When a comedy show looks like it knows what it is talking about and gets all the facts:WRONG.
Thank you John Oliver for being one of the few people out there with an acrual backbone.
“During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.” ― George Orwell. How awesome to see a media outlet not afraid to speak the truth - truly awesome. Bravo!!! Thank you so much Last Week Tonight, you hold a light in these dark times.
Oliver is a woke person, thus everything he says is a form of misinformation or straight lie. Taking the side of Hamas is nothing special, unless it's hidden.
Nah, doesn't apply here. Just a great money making scheme to appeal to popular trends for people who don't take the time to read.

"It's about dignity. And [...] dignity is something not negotiable. Right?" He had to say that to a delegation from GERMANY, whose constitution literally begins with the words: "Human dignity is untouchable."
I think he was probably fully aware of that, and chose his words wisely.
Camp David and the handshake of Rabin and Arafat at Camp David is long ago ... but peace and two souverain states are more necessary than ever.
he didnt have to say that, the german delegation asked for a routine diplomatic action.
Wow, imagine that ! I guess Germany is the only fucking country which its Constitution includes these affirmations ! And that it's version probably doesn't date back from after a certain year in the 20th century.

A heartfelt thank you for doing this. Much respect to Mr. Oliver and team for taking a risk and reporting the facts.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
As long as all criticism can be framed as antisemitic, they'll keep getting away with literal genocide.
as a German I am totally appalled by this show full of factual errors.
Thank you for saying this.

This might have ended every chance of getting an Emmy ever again. But yes he deserves every recognition for his bravery and he barely scratched the surface of how devestating life can be in the west bank.
@@josefabuaisheh6262 How would it end the chance when he had discussed this stuff in 2021 when he accused Israel of committing war crimes and practicing apartheid? it feels like you are leaning on the trope of Jews/zionists control everything and therefore he won't win. History has already proven this incorrect
You think hollywood would give him an emmy for this? 😂
He won something more important anyways. Credibility and respect.
REAL journalism at its best. Kudos to John Oliver & HBO! Not double standards that we are seeing in the media today.......
12:39 I got chills how FAST he answered this question... "Nothing. Die." The frustration in his voice was UNREAL!
I gagged on my lunch. So sad. 😖
Yea, but he can choose to surrender. He simply chooses not to. It is a choice
Edit: To clarify, what I am offended by, is his whining and complaining, considering that his situation was brought about by his own choices.
He can easily move from West Bank or inform on his people to the Israelis for good healthcare. Instead, he chose to live in a healthcare desert.
It is as if an elderly lady decided to fight back against an armed robber. Make better choices in life.

I will never get over the fact that we , the people , have to watch this genocide, these grave injustices done, and at the same time see our governments supporting it ..... 🙏
John Oliver has exceeded ALL MY EXPECTATIONS with this uncensored segment. Bravo!!!
Thank you. We need more people like John Oliver in the world. Evil triumphs when good people remain silent.
Wow! What an incredible piece of journalism
Thank you John Oliver
Craziest part is the West Bank isn't even where the current "war" is going on. Thank you John Oliver for this ballsy piece
A THOUSAND THANKS ❤❤
Also .. as i learned from Bassem Youssef and myself looked into, there is no Hamas in the West Bank.
Z!onism is WORSE than Naz!sm because they’ve adopted the worst traits of dehumanization from them.
What’s becoming so obvious to people now is that colonialism has never ended just rebranded with different terms. From Natives indigenous people being called “savages” in the old days to now being called “terrorist” by neocolonialists who are neoliberals, neoconservatives, and zionist.
This is the underlying ripple effect that the U.S government and its puppet allies don’t want to happen.
ballsy? he showed only one side of the argument. ballsy lol.
There ist more to the dignity thing the guy said to the German diplomats.
The very first sentence of the German constitution ist: "The human dignity shall be inviolable."
I still love that sentence.
shame they forgot that as they send money to Israel and run defense for their crimes
Not "shall be", but "is".
However, everyone who lives in Germany knows that it is not true.
then the German government proceeds to sell weapons to Israel during their massacre in Gaza and imprison hundreds of people just for carrying Palestinian flags... so much for a Constitution 🤡
@@Spaziergaenger975truer than in many of its neighbors at least
the 1949 German constitution is really well written but the first 20 articles are one big masterpiece worthy to serve as blueprint for all humankind akin to Beethoven's 9th symphony as hymn for the world
John Oliver, thank you for finding a creative way to bring forth the truth. And relieve the tension while educating people to the truth! God bless your ministry!!
Israeli settlers living literally above Palestinians and throwing things down on them is such a blunt visual metaphor for apartheid if you read it in a book you'd critique it for being to on the nose.
And it’s not really a good idea for the Palestinians to show swastikas to the Israelis
@@mikeh6084 you really both-sidesing this shit? Israel is like a cross between South Africa and Nazi Germany

The majority of Palestinians in the West Bank will happily admit that they would reverse the situation and enjoy it. The difference is that far-right Israeli settlers are a minority in Israel.

John Oliver and his entire team of show writers are brilliant. They take a topic, do an in-depth analysis and present it so clearly, comically, and eloquently.
Cherrypicking requires alot of effort hats off to the team.
@@Rationalist8 what important informations did they withhold here?
@@svejobaronfor example that both the nakba and the 6 day war were in defense of Israel. The nakba was when 6 nations declared war onto Israel and the 6 day war was when Jordan/westbank and Egypt planned an attack on Israel and they proactively defended themselves.
If your nation keeps attacking its neighbor it will start to ensure you can’t, which slowly leads to settlements.

Big ups to John and his team for doing this piece. It's in no way going to win him any awards in the West, but I'm sure it's appreciated by those hoping to shed more light on the injustices occurring in the West Bank.
john oliver has his head up his ass....he doesnt know the history of the region and , among othr inaccuracies, has libelled israelis about stealing land.....he doesnt know shit. what an asshole....no mention of the 700,000 jews forcibly ejected from all the arab countries at the inception of Israel.....thank god they had a place to go........Egypt wante the sinai back after losing it in 1967Israel traded a peace treaty for the sinai ......but they didnt ask for the Gaza strip to be returned. Jordan has not asked for the west bank to be given back....they have dis avowed any responsibility for governing what was JORDAN prior to the 6 day war. The Palestinians have never displayed any honorable government.....WHEN THE REST OF THE ARAB WORLD TAKES PARTIAL RESPONSIBILITY, THEN WE CAN TALK ABOUT THE FATE OF THE PALESTINIANS.....UNTIL THAT TIME ISRAEL IS FED UP WITH TAKING FULL RESPONSIBILITY.OLIVER IS BIASED AND MISINFORMED....WHERE THE HELL IS SAUDI ARABIA TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOLUTION...PLENTY OF LAND AND TONS OF MONEY.......NO, ALL THE ARAB COUNTRIES BENEFIT FROM PALESTINIAN PAIIN.WHAT HAS THE PALESTINIAN GOVERNMENT ACHIEVED SINCE 2008 WHEN GIVEN SELF RULE?They spent all the money on ways to attack israel.....they could have emulated israel by seeking arab support to build infrastructure like power plants, or a thriving manufacturing economy; but they spent their resources from meager financial support from the arab world, on vengeance. Do you really think that "palestine " is ready to join the ranks of real governments...if you do, you are ignorant of what it takes to run a country. The saddest part is that the promulgation of lies about the unscrupulous actions of Israel is so much like the blatant lies of the Trump campaign. Say the lies loud and long enough and the ttruth is lost. All you young people who sympathize with the palestininians have a good heart but you dont know the facts. You dontt know the history but you dont have the time to really learn about the facts.
