  • After installing 32GB of memory into my NAS, it crashed twice in 24 hours so I suspected the memory was bad. Sure enough, the memory was faulty. So, here's a tutorial on how to run Memtest86 on a QNAP NAS.

    Hi Stan, Really helpful vid. I have M.2 Cache drives on my QNAP beside the normal HDDs. Would these need to be removed also to run Memtest? (You need to open the case for these to be popped)

    My friend, Damn, I am feeling your pain. I bought 8 sticks of memory from NewEgg and put in my system, and it is not booting up. But, I put a single one in, and it works. So, I am using MemTest to figure out which one it is. And, I am going ONE-BY-ONE ... doing all of the tests for each 16GB of memory. But, yeah, a day (and more later) I found that it is just one of the eight that will not even allow memtest to run. Computer won't even boot with that stick in. Get this. These are BRAND NEW memory from Newegg, so I guess I've got to send them back to G-Skills.

    My motherboard has 2 slots and I have one 8GB RAM module. My pc was getting BSOD so I tested the RAM module and got around 500 errors. So I deleted my windows and used puppylinux with a pendrive just to access the harddrive for few days. I changed the RAM module to the other slot and tested again today, there were no errors. Could it be that my motherboard is corrupted?

      Or you damaged the DIMM slot like I did when installing.

    I'm experiencing something weird. I just built myself a 2700X + Gigabyte B450M Aorus Elite + Teamgroup dual channel (2x8) DDR4-3600. Placed the DIMMs in slots 2 and 4. Memtest86 fails at 3200MT/s and above using XMP timings. Switched the DIMMs to slots 1 and 3, got even more errors at 3200. Switched back to slots 2 and 4 and now Memtest86 passes 3200 twice already. Ok why is it suddenly running well now?? 3600 is still failing but I think it's because of the memory controller and not the DIMMs.

    Depending on the QNAP model, no need to enter BIOS. Reboot, on boot screen press F7 button for boot menu, select to boot from your USB drive for one time override. I am on TS-251+, no keyboard, no mouse will be available under Memtest86. It'll start by itself and run until you pull the plug out.

    thanks for the tutorial. the results I had was FAIL on 2 ram but PASS when testing the ram and slots individually. any advice for me? i just had my PC 2 weeks ago and I've been consistently getting BSOD since then.

      Rearrange the memory but have them all plugged in. Confirm that it is the memory and not the slot that’s bad. Also make sure try running at default speed and xmp speeds. Make sure it’s not a memory controller issue.

      What I would suggest, KK, is what the hell that I am doing. Put a ram stick in the first slot, next to CPU -- or that's way on my board. And, just test ONE SINGLE STICK. And, run it with the full test. I am not using MemTest86. I'm using Windows ramtest. But same thing. Just do one at a time, and tell it to do the extensive test. Yes, it takes time, but you will figure out exactly which one is the problem. Also, the Windows Memory Diagnostic test is awesome for doing this.

      @@PoeLemic I gotta disagree with one thing. Both Windows tests told me my Ram was fine even with extensive test. Memtest86 ran into 1257 errors between 4 passes. Changed RAM tested again no errors, and so far no bsod while gaming, goodluck.

    Do you run it with all ram installed or one at a time ?

    • @SuprUsrStan
      @SuprUsrStan  4 роки тому +2

      All at a time is fine. It’ll tell you which stick is bad.

    • @PoeLemic
      @PoeLemic 3 роки тому

      @@SuprUsrStan No, are you sure. But, I'm using WIndows' bootable ramtest, so it doesn't say which stick is bad. So I am testing one-by-one to make sure which is bad. If MemTest86 tells it, I wish it'd been shown. But you were only testing one, so that's pretty easy to know.

    • @poelemic3642
      @poelemic3642 3 роки тому +2

      Probably too late, but you can test all like SuperStan says. But on Windows' test one, you can't tell which stick it is. But, you'd know that you had a problem. Then, you have to test each one, or I did to finally find the damned one that's got a problem. Stupid how the software is designed. SHould be much easier. Maybe Stan's MemTest86 does it better, but the Windows one isn't the fastest approach.

    How do you know which ram is faulty?

    • @PoeLemic
      @PoeLemic 3 роки тому

      If you have more than one stick, you have to test them individually. EVERY SINGLE ONE. I just bought 8 sticks of 16gb each. So, I have spent the weekend figuring out which one is bad. ANd yeah just 1 of the 8 is bad. But, it takes a while, and sucks. Lot of wasted time, because you have to keep switching them. Yes, you can do them (like 2 at once), but then you don't know which of the two is bad. Easier just to test each one singularly. Get this: these were BRAND NEW off NewEgg.

      @poelemic3642 3 роки тому

      @@royaltyallen1162 Yes, it does. You need to look in motherboard manual to see which is primary memory slot. Or, that's what I did. I only tested one stick at a time.
