Still takes some getting used to, seeing these two as greying dad types. 2009 sometimes doesn't seem that far away. And yet at other times it feels like a lifetime ago. So, so good to see the guys back though.
Me too, friend. Felt like I was a similar age to them while the FotC series was running. In my 30s but still youthful enough that the world was still full of possibility. Now they look old, and I'm suddenly confronted with the fact that I'm only a couple of years away from looking exactly the same.
Oh god, it's even worse. I just looked it up and I'm the same age as Jermaine, and 2 years older than Bret. I'm about to get battered with the grizzled old man stick.
same here. about 6 months ago. now I'm an official member of the Dad's Dead Club. Miss ya, papa bear, all the time. Thanks for teaching me what unconditional love and support looks like. I hope to one day be capable of following your example. Give my love and thanks to the formless void of being too, if'n you don't mind.
Lost mine 20 years ago.. I'm in my 30's now and it still fucks me up. i just try to remember the good times and the fact he was an amazing father and i am very lucky to have had him. this made me laugh and cry too but I cry for you also. Sending positive vibes your way. I gotta go put on some of their funnier shit now, cuz I didn't want to cry today! Much love to all who are missing a parent right now. 💖💖💖💖💖
Jeb sport for your loss. I know it’s awful, and it takes time to get over. But eventually, in time, you can begin to relive the memories with less pain and they will mean even more to you than they did before.
I think this may be FOTC's best work to date. Even after hearing it multiple times I still feel moved by the father and son reminiscing about their day together at the beginning of the song. Then Bret's line "she just hooked up with another guy" always cracks me up. The way this song can lure you into one feeling and then shatter it, I believe only true art can really manipulate your feelings like that. The last part also got me thinking, why does the 33-year old son still want to sit on his Dad's knee and hear his advice? Did he grow up and realise he needed his Dad after all? But his Dad, tired of being cruelly thrown out and shunned, feels like he can't make up that relationship again that was snatched away from him? Or maybe 33 just rhymes with knee.
I thought it was just because a 33 year-old couldn't comfortably sit on the knee of a man in his (presumably) 60s or 70s. I didn't think he was shunned. My question is did that happen years later or was he 33 for the whole song?
I love how this song doesn't immediately deliver on what you're expecting, and before it does you don't care because it's really sweet, and you remember again that these guys are really talented and are really good doing a lot of different things, as evidenced in most of their stuff. Easy to assume they are just really good at life and do quite well in their private lives off camera, which they seem to enjoy as well. It's all very wholesome but never not funny too.
I feel like this one just has to be an homage/parody of the song of the same name by Cat Stevens. If you ever wanted to know how to make literally any dude cry.. just play that lol
This is a masterpiece. Listening to it a second time the context completely changes, and as a 30-year old who lost his father this song hits me deep. Fantastic writing and delivery!
Does he write most of these? That's kinda perfect. I feel like Jermaine is probably the better comedic actor of the two (imo) and Bret is a better songwriter
Oh, it’s so beautiful & hilarious. I had tears in my eyes & busted out laughing when the song shifted. So happy to hear them sing.

Bret: Then why is it called the Late Show?
Jermaine’s deep-ass voice is still the best sound that has ever graced the planet. Let it reverberate all throughout the land of Nod.
