Stephen seems so thrown off by their timing. Jemaine's sense of humor is so dry that he bucks Stephen. Bret manages to bring it back many times but it's Jemaine's sense of humor that makes this hilarous 😂
i don't like colbert. he doesn't know how to act when his guests are funnier than him. he's awkward when bill burr is on too

Standing by the foot path in Christchurch with my wife playing Pokemon GO, 4 people asked us if we needed help or if we were lost. Never would have happened in any big city in the US.

I laughed at this interview more than most. And they were barely trying. Jemaine especially is a gem.
Colbert really drops the ball in this interview. He has two comedic legends that have their own timing, and he fails to join them. He seems to stop them dead, but they are a great people, so they just keep going.
"We don't know this, we don't book your show." How did that not get more laughs? I lost it!
S: "Your country is full of wonderful people"
J: "We're only two of those people."
B: "There's more of us. Five more."
"If someone lights up when they see us we know they're foreign." :D You gotta love them!

I went to primary school with Jermaine and his brother, east school in masterton new Zealand back in the 70-80s?! Jermaine was a quiet protective older brother, pretty normal and kool!!!

I feel like Jermaine had the fastest walk-on in the history of talk show interviews. 7 seconds from introduction to sitting down on the chair and he still managed to get a handshake in. He really wanted to just sit down I guess.
I've always gotten the feeling that he's not terribly comfortable with being on stage.
Norm Macdonald easily has the fastest walk-on in talkshow history

I would have asked so many more questions... third season? New songs? Another album? Future personal projects, current jobs, Jemaine’s acting jobs, Bret’s composer jobs, writing, directing, how they go different directions, How do you guys write new songs together working separately? how is it to work together again... etc etc

He doesn't do well with comedians at all. I think because they're much quicker and funnier than him. He has writers for his "comedy" and they are the writers of their own brand of comedy. Check out the Bill Burr interview, it's incredibly cringy and it's clear that whoever cues the laughter is biased towards him as well.

I don't think Colbert is a good interviewer and I absolutely love FOTC and the other stuff these guys have done, but there is nothing humorous here, dry or otherwise.
OMG...This is hilarious and not just because Stephen seemed wholly unprepared for the two of them. Jemaine and Bret are fantastic as always.
Laughed out loud in the car just a week ago when Hiphopapotamus came up on random play: "Some people say, my lyrics are sexist, but you b!tches and ho's should know, I'm trying to correct this.". Jermain sounds so conciliatory as he raps that line. Still my go to comedy album for replay-ability.
I moved from illinois to New Zealand when I was 18 for 5 years right around the time flight of the choncords began to air. Let me tell you getting all the inside NZ jokes makes the show so much better and it was already great. I was lucky to get such a unique experience :)

I'd like to see a few examples, because I didn't think I was missing much, unlike "Spaced" and its frequent pop culture references.
I can't decide who my favorite British Commonwealth buddy team is - Bret & Jemaine, Tim & Mike (from Spaced), or Roy & Moss (from The I.T. Crowd).
This made me smile :) I'm from NZ i was born here and the humor here is great!

It’s hilarious how the crowd didn’t get most of the New Zealand humor.

They’re funny because they’re not funny. Get it?
Its more to do with each countries definition of humor. Deadpan humor is popular in some countries and not in others. Americas comedy has a long history of slapstick with an expected applause and unified laughter. The ironic or sarcastic comedy of say NZ or the UK is usually to with people of that country, You enjoy groaning to a joke because you often groan in life etc.
Jimmy carr for example is so well received in the UK because he is blunt and has no filter, like a lot of the British. But im america, you need a filter for most people or they are offended, so his comedy is not as popular.
They clowned his ass on his own show, off the cuff. I love it.

I love when Stephen asks where they've been and Brett replies: "We've just been getting ready for tonight". Brilliant. I miss seeing them together like this. Glad they kept the show to only 2 seasons, as much as I love the show, it was a smart move.
This is what truly funny people are like, without the rehearsal. I know there have been requests for more uncut interviews, but I bet 90% aren't this naturally amusing.

I wouldnt be so hard on Stephen. FotC make it hard for an interviewer and I think they enjoy being awkward. The best parts were where he actually went with them and played along - fame horse, orange juice.

Yesterday, when the short version of the "uncut" interview was uploaded, there were a ton of comments about how people couldn't believe Stephen didn't talk about Lord of the Rings. So needless to say, I got a decent laugh while watching this full version. Because OF COURSE Stephen talked about it. Of course he did. Never change, Stephen!
Stephen was even prepared! He had that photo of Bret as Lindir ready to pull out.
Jemaine talking about selling orange juice had me laughing harder then I have in a considerable time. These guys are great. Need more of them in my life. Wish Bret had spoken more.

I walked past them in wellys one day when I was very hungover on Taman street and I’d been at uni so had no energy and I didn’t clock it until after I walked past that it was then I just shouted “flight of the concords” and they stuck up a peace sign. They looked hungover too lol
Stephen Colbert seems genuinely nervous in this. Ive never seen him nervous to meet comedians. It could be bc hes not used to non-American comedic timing or these guys are just that iconic in the comedy world. Which I think they truly are.

You do film? Check out "Eagle vs Shark" by Taika Watiti with Germaine but not Brett. Still its a great movie especially from a filmmaking perspective, and it propelled Taika's career.
There is a spin off cop show that has been made. Not sure where you can view it but it's called Wellington Paranormal.

I love how dry their humor is. So much so that at some points Stephen breaks but the audience doesn't get it. It's amazing.

because stephen sucks at interviewing.
Because they're ad libbing and he doesn't know where the conversation will head, so he's forced to make jokes similar to their humor. It actually works out better, but either way he's either barely trying or he's forcing himself, making it either exhausting or boring to watch.
They are heavily improv based. Stephen has been improv based for his early career, but he is now written based. They are ruthless to stagnating interviews. You arent incorrect.
Because they, especially Jermaine, have such an incredibly deadpan style. You could see that Stephen at times didn't know if Jermaine was serious or not. It'd take him a second or two, and then he'd have to stop himself from cracking up.
Probably cause they're just happy to sit quietly. On Late Night or sitting on some porch, they're probably the same

If this is true and you haven’t seen them before, check out/search “Flight of the Conchords” which was their brilliant show on HBO. And if you like, the film, “What we doin the Shadows” is weird fun.

Jermaine's been incredibly busy. He's been in loads of movies and TV shows: e.g MIB3, Legion, What we do in the Shadows, Wrecked, People Places Things, Divorce etc. And he's done huge amount of voicework: Moana, Rick & Morty, American Dad, the BFG, Rio (1 & 2), Trip Tank, Lego: Batman.
They've hardly quit and retired back to NZ.

Jakinda??? SMH. I met Jemaine at Auckland airport on an LA bound flight. I was so excited and drunk I lit up like one of those foreign people he is talking about. No one was acknowledging him at all. He actually looked a lot "worse" than that so I wasn't even sure it was him. But I saw his name on his boarding pass! I messaged him on the plane and he replied! Soooo happy. I am a NZer btw, but spent 20ish years in CA.

Surprised that the conversation about Figwit didn't make the 1 hour cut, especially since Stephen also had a chance to talk LOTR with (the surprisingly unversed) Emma Stone.
Precisely what I was thinking! When I watched the aired version I thought maybe for a second Colbert somehow didn't know about Figwit.
Doubtful he wouldn't know. Colbert is certified* to know more about Middle Earth than Tolkien. I think, though, that his crew has a "one LOTR reference per episode" limit.

I love FOTC. I can’t watch one of their shows because I end up binging all the episodes for hours. I was obsessed for a while. So glad they have a special coming up.
