Thanks a million Naptown Tuner. I recently bought a very clean 2011 Audi A4 cheap because it jumped time and bent the valves. After I watched almost everyone of your very helpful videos, I pulled the engine, replaced pistons, rings with new waffle oil rings, timing chains, tensioners, water pump, rear seal, had a valve job done, put it all back together and it fired right up. Passed smog with flying colors and is running great with no codes. I would have never attempted this job without your expert knowledge and instruction and you made it so I was successful in getting it back on the road. Your videos are very entertaining as well as informative. Many thanks and keep up the great work.
Please don't stop doing your videos on Audi 2.0l TFSI engines. Absolutely the best, great attention to detail, easy to follow and understand, lastly great sense of humour adds some relieft to usually a stress filled day of fixing our Audi's so they run like there supposed too!
Love how deep you go into your videos with helpful assembly tips , updated parts , common failures , you are better then the service manual . Your an Awesome teacher!
I’m picking up a 2013 Audi A5 2.0T soon, I just want a sporty coupe , I’ve been watching your videos I understand there could be potential issues but I just love the A5
You are the man! This video allowed me to fix my Audi. After all was said and done, it worked great. Lucky for me the valves were not bent, started right up and runs great! Many thanks!
Naptown Tuner is truly inspiring. I wish all mechanics were like this instead of keeping the truths from car owners only to deceive. The world would be a better place with more happy car owners if we had more like him.
This guys so helpful And no BS just right to the job unlike a lot of you tubers Blah blah blah for half the video over nothing Thanks BRO you’ve helped me out a few times in the past. How often should you do the timing chain on a B8.5 2014 2.0T??
Life saver! Between mostly this video and some of the fcp euro video on this I was able to replace my chain and make sure I was timed correctly! Many thanks!
I have this same engine and the timing chain is on its way out but not that bad sometimes a little rattling on start-up hasn't done it once this winter i figured it being so cold in the morning the metel chain seems tighter in the summer it ratteles on start up then goes away after a few seconds I wish i had the courage to do a timing chain job I'm really good with my hands I know the motor very well I just don't have well tools and space your videos are great I've learned a lot maybe I will have the guts to tackle my chain one day
I love these videos. I don't even need to do this work but I still watch them. I would like to see P2799 video if you get the time but regardless, first channel I've ever subscribed to!
Hey man I love your vedios as we have the same passion about the same engine . I learn a lot from you and I listen to every word you say . Sometimes you use fast forward, I would love if you keep it normal , I never get bored, thanks for your effort
Hay , all your videos are awesome! Excellent mechanical advice. I'm sitting with a big issue, I'm busy replacing my 2010 audi A5 2.0 tfsi timming chain. Follow your advice and everything worked perfectly. After the chain was done , I removed the crank bold that I used to turn the engine. And there the bottom gear came loose 💥 bang there goes all my hard work timming out and the new tensioner. I need urgent help, how do I go ahead. Do I need to get a new gear looks like it sits on a little lip how does that gear sit tight on the crank. Please help urgently.
I appreciate the videos. You have a lot of good ones. Thank you. I have a question. Maybe you can help me out with. I’m trying to fix a vehicle for my daughter. And it’s a 2011 Audi 2.0 Q5. I’m doing the timing chain and updating the timing chain tensioner. The only issue that I ran into, Is I was using the timing chain kit with the white plastic washer for the crankshaft. And the cam locks. So I utilized everything right. But the only issue when I went to put the timing chain back on. My arrow on my crankshaft is in the correct position. But both of my camshaft marks are facing the bottom and not the top. So I tried to spin the camshaft with the wrench and they could only go so far. I cannot spin them to get the mark to the top, so to put the copper links. I’ve already took off the tray now and removed the cams, Because I was scared I messed up something. I turned them a little more than I should have and I heard one make a pop noise. The exhaust side did. I’m not a professional at all, but I was definitely trying to save some money on her first car. With the cam top off now can I just turn the cams and face the marks up myself? Or how do I get this thing timed? If you have a video that explains that I will watch it. I’ve already lined up the crankshaft and the other chains no problem. When it came time to do the camshaft timing, both marks were facing down. I have no clue on what step I messed up. Thank you in advance!
Awesome video on the new guides, chain and tensioner.. I just did a quick look at my Audi B8 2013 with 71k miles and according to my VCDS in UDS mode using Advanced Measuring Blocks and I got these values: Camshaft Adaptation bank 1: -6.90° Camshaft rpm: 381.5 Angle difference actual-specified: -0.063° Camshaft position deviation from reference: 0.02° My question is do you suspect a stretched chain? I haven’t seen any P0016 codes, the engine sounds great, idles great, no vibration, no ticking.. oil is good been using Euro Amsoil VW502.0 do I need to pull the upper cover put it in TDC and do caliper measurements exhaust cam to guide, guide to intake and overall ? If I’m within 60-62mm and 120-123mm do you think I’m ok? Thanks!!! Actually looking for advice from anyone
omg i love naptown bro literally just answered my question bc im tryna do the head gasket and got the cams out i could pull out the head without removing the lower cover or even taking the chain off at all and i kept thinking how am i gonna know its in time if i didnt even have the colored marks at all when i had the engine at tdc, that explains that had no idea id be spinning the engine over all day tryna chase them dam marks now im just wondering for reinstalling cams since they are spring loaded how is that going back or they can literally just be put back as they came out?
Great video super helpful. Performed the job and I'm getting a code p 00 16 P0 011 P000a Overall the car runs great once in a while I get an extended crank I've triple checked my timing marks Lower crankshaft pulley lines up perfectly with the arrow on the case and pistons at TDC When I first installed the new chain the link matched up with the cam and crank marks. If I pull the upper cover off and get it on TDC both cams look identical to your video with the updated guide with the upper guide and measure just about two and a half inches from the cylinder head guide mount to the cam mark to each cam . Is it possible that the intake cam is off one tooth from the crank one link that would move that link out just past the plastic guide. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Naptown another well done outstanding Engine timing Chain on these Audi powertrains. @Naptown turner On a 2014 Audi A4 did this year's engine need a to have a replacement Tensioner?
I have a 2018 (b9) Audi A5 2.0l TFSI (approx 25k miles on the clock). Would I need to look out for the rocker arms, timing chain tensioners and guides failing early too? I only drive 3k miles a year, don't drive it like a sports car etc. The engine is a bit rattly when it starts up from cold, then is quiet once warmed up and drives/runs smoothly
So what about the other chains? I assume that they’re basically the same type of sequence if I’m wrong please comment Ty. Also a good video on elaborating timing and how much it could be off and what direction that you’re supposed to go
When I put the cam chain in time does the lower chain need to be in time as well as you described? I had to remove the cam cover to replace a broken spring but lost tension on my bungy cord making the chain fall off the lower gear. I plan on removing the dip stick tube to use a camara to put the chain back on its marks. But I don't want to remkve the bottom timing chain cover off. Any advice.
I have a 2016 Audi A5 with 71k miles on it. On some forums I heard the B8.5’s came with the updated timing chain. Can you confirm if this is true. Also if they did, is there an interval that they should still be replaced again?
I'd appreciate some info on a 2010 VW Jetta Wolfsburg edition 2.0t im working on. Herr's the deal, my buddy bought it over a year ago knowing it needed a timing chain. It had the typical cam to crank sensor code. long start time, occasional stall and check engine light. no crazy engine noise, no other problems but did run. Fast forward a year. I now had time to do the chain. I replaced everything timing chain wise and when it started it made an awful noise like it was out of time so my first though was, I bent the valves even though I triple checked ALL methods of timing. well, it was the phaser pin not locking in so when it started the unlooked phaser pin was allowing the cam to flop around in the phaser housing. what's crazy is it didn't do this when I drove it into the shop? I did borescope inside each cylinder and there's NO sign of piston to valve markings. should I install a new cam and let it ride or could I be missing something?
I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and I’m in the process. I put the cylinder head back on and the camshaft back in. But when I timed up the crankshaft pulley and the other chains the lower ones I spun the crankshaft a couple times so now my arrow for the crankshaft is not at the bottom. It is at the side. But I have both of my cams arrows up when I put the cam tray back on. Can I spin the crankshaft or will it throw off the camshaft or bend anything? I know that arrow on the crankshaft needs to be at the bottom. And I did not spin it before I put the cams and cylinder head back on. But I have it at top dead center. It’s just that once I lined up the oil pump and the crankshaft. I’ve probably spun it five times since then cleaning the piston heads. So now that arrow is not at the bottom.
Hi man tnx for all videos helpful for sure, does updated rails and chain fit to vw 2.0 tsi ccta engine? Any link for them where too order them tnx again😊
On the old style tensioner, even if the safety paw quits, there is still a spring that is pushing out the barrel. So it shouldn't release the tension immediatly.
So how is it the specs show it to be 1.5 links intake and 2 links exhaust. If you do 2 links on intake your measurements would be 127mm when specs are 124-126
Naptown, is Audi going to recall the pistons on the 2.0 t ? if not what is the best way to stop the oil consumption on my 2009 a4, what pistons will do the job ?
I have a question I have a 2012 q5. It has mid fires in cylinders 1, 2, and 3. The codes that came back are p0300-p0303 along with p0506. I am trying to make sure everything gets addressed. I have seen numerous issues from timing chain to the piston rings breaking off. All the code came up at the same time so I think it’s the timing chain. It’s at the shop but I am trying to educate myself so I can speak intelligently to the repair shop. Anything you can offer helps
Have p0016 replaced the magnet and the valve on the intake cam and also replaced the timing chain, verified it multiple times and P0016 still returns. Any suggestions? What I did notice was the phaser barely locks in place and can still spin freely
Im currently doing the timing chains on a 2010 Passat CC with p0016 with the common failure tensioner. I ran into a weird issue. I have put the vehicle on TDC with crank pulley at the 4oclock mark shown by the timing cover. Have also verified cylinder 1 is in the up position. My issue is that both my exhaust and intake cams are not where they should be. Both are at the 1 o’clock position. They do not measure the 65mm and 125mm overall as specified by VW. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Love your channel man!
I believe it’s the only parts you can get now when ordering the various replacement kits. Mine is a 2014 allroad and it already had the updated guides from the factory. Probably made the difference when a check engine code came up for a stretched chain instead of being stuck on the side of the road with a damaged motor.
new style longer tensioner rail on the right is 06K109469M and the one at the top inbetween the cams is 06K109469N. The Must have upper tensioner is 06K109467K 👍
I have audi a4 2012 and yesterday when I tried to start the car for work the doesn’t run but takes maybe 10 second crank and after starting upp,and the check engine light came on, I scanned and give me code p 0016 what do you suggest? Timing chain replacement or?
hey i have a Q5 that i burt 2 valves on the exaust #1 cylinder and replaced all the valves head gasket chains x 2 banance and timing chain after getting it all together its been giving me problems like no power and flooding when i try to start it wondering if you had any ideas its realy got me scratching my head. do you have an email or some way to contact with you ? thanks for the videos realy helpful
I need your help!! On my 2015 q5 2.0, I had a chain rail on the intake side broke in half. Now I have the chain off and the cams pulled. When I turn the motor over at the crank, it stops DEAD after about 180 degrees of travel. The lobes and journals all look fine. There are shavings missing from some areas of the block due to the chain slapping around. It did not do this for long, I realized something wasn't right in the driveway. All of the valves appear to be up and closed judging from the top of the head. What could be jamming the crank up? Do I need to pull the head? I'm all ears! I need this car running.
Hey brother! I have all of my timing marks lined up but I can’t seem to turn the engine over by hand? Am I not applying enough force or is there something wrong? Thank you and god bless
Update: my balance shaft had some build up on the end of that was causing it to stick. Cleaned it up with a scotchbrite pad and everything turned perfectly after.
Hey Everyone I need some advice. I have a 2019 A4 bought it 2nd hand last year with 53K clicks on the engine. A few weeks ago the engine light came coming up with message start/stop malfunction. I brought the car to Audi and they say its the timing chain that needs to be replaced. My question is…..is it normal on a 5 year old car with now 62K kilometres on the engine that the timing chain needs replacement?? I read online this kind of stuff happens around 10 years or 90-100K. I had a VW golf for 10 years and more KM on the engine and I didn’t have this issue with it
Hi I have a 2011 Audi A4 with a cam rattle from1000 rpm to 3000rpm with a flashing epc light, it goes away when I unplug the cam adjuster Solenoid plug. Any suggestions thanks in advance
Is it at all possible to have it jump.time and cause no valve issue. My son and I just dissatisfied the same engine and saw absolutely no signs of damage.
I just got done with this timing chain and I got to tell everyone that with the old top guide it's 2 links on the exhaust cam and 1.5 links on the intake side.
I've been hunting this question and answer because this is the one video out of many that contradict. according to all of Google image searches it is the two links on exhaust and 1.5 on intake?
I have a beetle TUBRO 2012 with a TSI MOTOR in it. But timing chain, jump time and bent values. Wish I could ship the car to you to fix.. no beetle mechanics in my area..
When doing the balance shaft chain
make sure to watch this first

Great job
How did you get the engine out of the car in order to take it apart?
He'll yea good job
@ressy673 I'd say with a engine hoist and a engine stand..they can be had for a fair price now a days

Duuuude you're absolutely amazing. I watched several others that weren't near as detailed as yours. Thank yoouuuu!
Your video's on the 2.0 tfsi were extremely helpful! Thank you for creating them!
You are one of the best if not the best mechanic i have ever seen. Videos are spot on, no nonsense just to the point.
Did you just pull a dirty Sanchez on Naptown?
What you on about mate?
I’m picking up a 2013 Audi A5 2.0T soon, I just want a sporty coupe , I’ve been watching your videos I understand there could be potential issues but I just love the A5
Thank you Naptown. Fantastic. Really helps. Your shadetree fans are so appreciative.
My Friend don't stop doing what ur doing, I assure u your vids have helped thousands believe me!!! 👍🏻

This guy is the best. Helped me fix so much on my wife’s 2014 A4
Great info! I've only ever done one timing chain job on one of these... was less nerve racking than the 3.0 supercharger chains!
Wow! Thomas is watching Naps vids! Been watching you forever EXO :]
Great video. Loved the indepth explanation on the variation between the old and new tensioner and guides.
This man has all the right words for all them thingys
Life saver! Between mostly this video and some of the fcp euro video on this I was able to replace my chain and make sure I was timed correctly! Many thanks!

I love these videos. I don't even need to do this work but I still watch them. I would like to see P2799 video if you get the time but regardless, first channel I've ever subscribed to!
Wow, he's doing the lords work. That looks like a nightmare. You have to get the timing chains and guides all happy before seeing if valves are bent?
Thank you for your videos nap, truly helpful I wish to be like you one day
Hey man I love your vedios as we have the same passion about the same engine . I learn a lot from you and I listen to every word you say . Sometimes you use fast forward, I would love if you keep it normal , I never get bored, thanks for your effort
Your video was very helpful, do you have the part number for the updates timing chain kit?
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar
Thanks brother, excellent job,all clear. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hay , all your videos are awesome! Excellent mechanical advice. I'm sitting with a big issue, I'm busy replacing my 2010 audi A5 2.0 tfsi timming chain. really helpful man! going into every single little detail ur content is amazing
Awesome video on the new guides, chain and tensioner.. I just did a quick look at my Audi B8 2013 with 71k miles and according to my VCDS in UDS mode using Advanced Measuring Blocks and I got these values:
Camshaft Adaptation bank 1: -6.90°
Camshaft rpm: 381.5
Angle difference actual-specified: -0.063°
Camshaft position deviation from reference: 0.02°
My question is do you suspect a stretched chain? I haven’t seen any P0016 codes, the engine sounds great, idles great, no vibration, no ticking.. oil is good been using Euro Amsoil VW502.0 do I need to pull the upper cover put it in TDC and do caliper measurements exhaust cam to guide, guide to intake and overall ? Good!!! I will save it here!! I know I will need it one day!
Great video super helpful.
Performed the job and I'm getting a code p 00 16
P0 011
P000a
Overall the car runs great once in a while I get an extended crank
I've triple checked my timing marks
Lower crankshaft pulley lines up perfectly with the arrow on the case and pistons at TDC
When I first installed the new chain the link matched up with the cam and crank marks.
Where did you buy your updated timing chain kit from?
Bumping
Haven't pull my engine yet but the valve cover have some strip bolts for the vacuum can I change the cover and get another one

Oh I can get in touch with you. I need to get an overall kit for my q5
So how is it the specs show it to be 1.5 links intake and 2 links exhaust. If you do 2 links on intake your measurements would be 127mm when specs are 124-126
You are correct! I commented this 7 months ago. 30k now and another timing job running great
Is it worth changing the balance shaft chain also i was going to do my timing chain at 80k wanted to know if i should do the balance shaft chain also
Naptown, is Audi going to recall the pistons on the 2.0 t ? if not what is the best way to stop the oil consumption on my 2009 a4, what pistons will do the job ?
Woooow🙃🙃🙃thank you for your very professional videos
Great bro everything right and understandable .
Quite informative and priceless videos...... Awesome and very details Thanks thanks alot
Is it necessary to take out the whole engine?
What I did notice was the phaser barely locks in place and can still spin freely
when doing the timing chain do I also need to redo my balance shafts I didn't remove the chains at all. or can I just get away with the way it is.
What did you end up doing?
Turn your cams clockwise slowly.
Hey Naptown i just got the p0016 code but the car still runs( rough but no noises)..I’m wondering if the engine still good
Was it still good? Should have been with no noise
@@seanh9869 just drove rough chained the chain all hood now
Sorry changed the chain all good now
Where is your video please for the strip down and timing chain removal ? Thank you!
This guy is amazing 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Exactly what i needed thank you
Love to get the part numbers of these New Tensioner and guides!
Like your videos mate. very much.
Amazing work and video 👍

How close are these to the 2014 vw passat 1.8 tsi engines?
I need your help!! On my 2015 q5 2.0, I had a chain rail on the intake side broke in half. Now I have the chain off and the cams pulled. When I turn the motor over at the crank, it stops DEAD after about 180 degrees of travel. The lobes and journals all look fine. There are shavings missing from some areas of the block due to the chain slapping around. It did not do this for long, I realized something wasn't right in the driveway. All of the valves appear to be up and closed judging from the top of the head. What could be jamming the crank up? Do I need to pull the head? I'm all ears! I need this car running.
Sounds like bent valves
This method for check Can apply to EA888 1.8 TFSI CJS?
Thx Naptown! Where can I buy the updated timing chain kit?
Dealer when in doubt, other parts are revers engineered from the oem updated parts
NaptownTuner Oh yeah! Thx
that has life or miles recommends me change timing chain ??
Hey brother, I am in MD and have a 2011 GTI with 76,000 miles. Car runs great when should I consider replacing the timing chain and or tensioner?
You should its better to prevent a timing chain failure and pay over 2k on parts and labor
Is it normal to still have code p01600 after timing everything correctly.? Or does it take a few drive cycles to go away.?
Hey brother! I have all of my timing marks lined up but I can’t seem to turn the engine over by hand? Am I not applying enough force or is there something wrong? Thank you and god bless
Take your spark plugs out, it should be easier to turn. If it's not turning fairly easily, there's some other issue. Could be out of time.
Update: my balance shaft had some build up on the end of that was causing it to stick. Cleaned it up with a scotchbrite pad and everything turned perfectly after.
Can i get a part number for those updated guides please!?
Hey Everyone I need some advice. I have a 2019 A4 bought it 2nd hand last year with 53K clicks on the engine. A few weeks ago the engine light came coming up with message start/stop malfunction. I brought the car to Audi and they say its the timing chain that needs to be replaced. My question is…..is it normal on a 5 year old car with now 62K kilometres on the engine that the timing chain needs replacement?? I read online this kind of stuff happens around 10 years or 90-100K. I had a VW golf for 10 years and more KM on the engine and I didn’t have this issue with it
question for you, have a 1.8TSI motor how do we turn intake cam? I dont see halfmoon behind the sprocket(s)
When changing out timing chain for maintenance do you change out just the upper timing chain and tensioner or do you do both upper and lower?
might as well do all of them
any know what might cause a P0341 cam shaft position circuit range performance??
How often should the timing chain be replaced brother ? On the 2.0t
Every 100k miles or less in general but depends on how hard the vehicle is driven
Excellent info here !!!
Hi I have a 2011 Audi A4 with a cam rattle from1000 rpm to 3000rpm with a flashing epc light, it goes away when I unplug the cam adjuster Solenoid plug. Any suggestions thanks in advance

Was it damaged?
Will a 2009 vw cc 2.0 engine fit a b8 a4?
Great teacher 👍🙏
I just got done with this timing chain and I got to tell everyone that with the old top guide it's 2 links on the exhaust cam and 1.5 links on the intake side.
Did it work out? Doing the mm measurements, I get the same.
I've been hunting this question and answer because this is the one video out of many that contradict. according to all of Google image searches it is the two links on exhaust and 1.5 on intake?
@@bryanpatrick1405 Yes it works fine. I'm glad I didn't do it wrong.
Audi just issued factory extension on all 2.0T 2008-2015 timing chains, water pumps and turbochargers. They will replace them without charge.
Do you have additional info for year / miles or a link? The one I know about is 7year 70k for turbo 8year 80k for pistons for example
Work for 1,8 tfsi?
Do I need to replace all 3 chains?
might as well
I have a beetle TUBRO 2012 with a TSI MOTOR in it. But timing chain, jump time and bent values. Wish I could ship the car to you to fix.. no beetle mechanics in my area..
Where did you get that timing kit? I wan to buy one
Is there a way of testing the engine before installing and starting it up?
Un plug coil packs and pull fuel pump fuse and you can crank it over without it starting, or you can manually turn the engine from the crank bolt
Have a question so are you familiar with all types of Audis??
When im done replacing the chains how can i make sure my timing is perfect so when i start the car the pistons wont hit the valves?
Link to parts?
