Personally it took alot of time to me to understand bridge mechanism. This is very crucial component but poorly designed or precisely saying not wise fitment to cams. I had a hard time to understand why i am getting noise from cam side when engine heated up. I discovered that this was due to low oil pressure which comes only in drive mode after releasing the pedal and momentarily light flashes. I am having the doubt that oil pump is bit sluggish when transmission is put due to loaded conditions and lack of oil pressure alongwith this bridge design did damage the camshaft lobes. I am still investigating this.
Your explanation is really very knowledgeable and deep. Thanks.

It's ironic that the thing supposed to stop debris from clogging up the oil galleys becomes the piece of debris that causes most of the problems. The screen in my cam bridge had popped out. I followed your advice and deleted the remains of it. I didn't find all of the screen, but fortunately(?) I've replaced the head so it's probably stuck in the old head somewhere.

great video! I am going to follow it to pop out the screen when I check and fix the timing issue (not confirmed yet). A question about the cam adjuster magnet (of 2011 audi Q5 2.0TFSI). I am having a P0016 fault code. I have checked both the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor and they appear fine but I replaced both anyways. Now the cam adjuster magnet is having weird test results. It's measured 6.7 ohm resistance. the magnet pin pops out when connected to an external alkaline batter of 7.5V or 9.0V and also pops out when connecting to car battery (12.2V).However, it does not pops out when connecting to the cam adjuster plug of the car although it measures having 8.2V when the ignition is ON. I double-checked with multimeter while it's connected to the car plug and it's showing voltage of 8.2V so no loose connection. I am curious and can't explain why the same cam adjuster magnet is having different response by same DC voltage of different sources (from car plug and battery). This violates the basic physics law (current = voltage / resistance). Hope you professional guys can explain the mystery. Thanks. Jeff

Love the videos. I have a 2014 A4 (110,000 miles). It’s burning oil. I’m about to replace timing chain and guides, etc. I’m also going to replace valve seals. These were the culprits for my 2000 VW GLX v6 burning a lot of oil. I’d like to see a video of how to properly remove and reinstall cam shafts without removing lower timing chain cover (without placing in service position?).

I have payed 126 euros (about 150 USD) for camshaft bridge, OEM. My old bridge has broken oil screen, but that wasn't problem. Problem is non return valve, that ball in cam bridge which holds oil when engine is turned off and without oil pressure. Seat where ball sit was damaged. Because of bad cam bridge valve, I had annoying noisy cold startups with specific VVT rattle only until oil pressure is not reach upper parts of engine. Now, engine is quiet on cold and on hot startup. Many people think that they have timing chain rattle, but it is not a case.

Dorman has their own version of the bridge that supposedly has a fix for the screen breaking, theirs uses a one piece stainless steal screen that's laser welded or something. I was thinking of getting theirs but after watching, I'll just get the updated VW part and pop out that screen. It there's apparently because VAG don't trust the customers to change their oil enough, but the damn thing is poorly made that ends up defeating its own purpose.

Hey brother! I did timing chain guides, Timing chains, cam bridge, magnetic cam adjuster, and intake camshaft. Intake camshaft sprocket was very loose considering it’s supposed to be nearly “locked” with minor play against the actual camshaft which is why I replaced it. Upon start up, it has a very quiet and normal idle but has a rattle noise only at 2000+ RPM. Goes away when the magnetic wheel is disconnected so I’m assuming it has to do with the camshaft when it tries to adjust itself. Is this why you mentioned aftermarket camshafts shouldn’t be used? Or would it have to do with the screen missing off the old cam bridge BEFORE I installed the new one upon repair?

NaptownTuner, as usual, great informational videos and entertaining as well :) Thank you. Question, it seems many experts either I talked to or watched their UA-cam channels recommend replacing the Camshaft Bridge if you open up this area. My question, why does one need to really replace it if either the oil screen is missing or if it is still there but as you and others recommend to remove it as you showed using a flat head screw driver as an example! What is the point of replacing it if the screen is missing or one will remove anyway ?
Assuming one can thoroughly clean the existing camshaft bridge, I really do not see any benefit of replacing it and not reuse existing one! If anything, it is unnecessary expense! Can you Plz help clarify ?

    • @NaptownTuner

Hey broo I have a huge issue with an A4 1.8 tsfi maybe you can helpme , i have a persistent P164D00 ,did a complete rebuild , used most of your tips. I changed the oil pressure control valve cleared the code and it disappeared for a while but about 10 minutes after it came back, of course these comes with a low oil pressure warning light. The turbocharger has lots of play and apparently it is licking through the exhaust ,could these cause the oil pressure issue ?

I had a turbo center cartridge come apart on my first Audi b5 a4 1.8t on the highway.. pouring oil in the exhaust, I pulled over I had a rubber glove and knipex pliers.. I took the banjo bolt off of the feed line and screwed it back in over the finger of a rubber glove. It held for the 8miles or so back home without the turbo spinning (broken) As far as I know you should be able to plug the turbo feed line and run it naturally aspirated to check for proper oil pressure on the gauge. Don’t know why you couldn’t do that

Hi there I have a 2011 A4 previous replace both balance shafts because of a oil pressure problem, also replaced all timing chain components, oil pressure problem went away but I have a rattling noise coming from the valvetrain only when revving the engine from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm also the eps light blinks when this happens, but when I disconnect the plug from the cam adjuster the valvetrain noise disappears when revving and it comes back only when I plug it back in.. can you help me in the right direction thanks in advance

Check / replace you’re reverse thread plunger / oil valve for the intake camshaft sometime a small spring let’s go. Typically you’d have a check engine light but one of your rockers could have broken especially if they where put back in after a failed timing / bent valve situation. Eventually it should set a light after electronic pedal control light comes on a few times

@@lucapino9837 could have swapped one or more of your rockers from side to side (intake rockers are fatter than exhaust rockers) but I’ve only ever seen one bad head gasket on an Audi and I had to take a twin turbo a8 down to the bare block to fix it. Both sides everything and the regional tech field manager went through it all after it was apart because it was pretty much brand new

Hey Naptown thanx for the infor.
My car is experiencing a rough idle. I own A4 B8 1.8tfsi Singapore Import. Had to change pistons and rings as there was a problem of oil burning and heavy smoke on it. The process went well. Fired it up, and had that first kick start 🙂
Problem is after 5 days running, it started to have rough idling issue, put in VCDS and got bank 1 correlation with crank. Tried to do a re-timing, and upon opening the front couldnt see issue with timing being off. But I timed it again just to make sure. Problem wasnt solved. One thin I noticed is Camshaft Bridge Screen was broken and it peeled away😒
Could the Camshaft Adjuster be the issue in this case, as it might be that debries had moved into the "vvt"❓

    • @NaptownTuner
      @NaptownTuner  3 роки тому

That shouldn’t cause that fault, maybe if you installed an aftermarket camshaft or only a few times I’ve seen the intake cam (reverse thread) adjustment plug with a broken spring If you double checked timing by matching the links I trust you did it right but that’s usually what it always is with timing out of time or stretched chain

No signs just take it off to inspect, if you were to get a check engine light from it, it would be too late

In that video I’m talking about the snout of the camshafts and the camshaft adjustment bridge. If you have scoring on the cams it’s best to replace the affected camshafts and bridge. I’ve never checked the clearance of the cams to cam tray I just always check it with a wrench like I show in my installing camshafts video. As long as the cams spring back effortlessly then you know everything is good. I’m about to produce a complete cylinder head installing video soon
