The “rules” are there to help people learn how to make bonsai a certain way. That can make learning the art form more successful for many. Even so, most bonsai lovers will find what they like and claim their style. Some of us just have a comfort level that strays further from what we’ve learned.

I've been using turface in my mixtures for a long time,never had any issues,.it's actually help form some dense "fine root structure",..everyone is different,whatever works best for your climates,..but anyway,.great work,can't wait to see this one when it starts filling in,.keep the videos coming,God bless!
I’ve used almost every recommended local product as well as some imported stuff such as the magic dirt known as akadama. Bonsai can grow in a lot of different media. You could even grow one in a pot full of glass beads if you wanted. The best choice is going to be the one that you are willing to pay for, water properly, and replace when needed.

@@BonsaiEcho ikr..I'm not big on akadama, I don't like the way it breaks down after less than a year,.I'm dealing with a hotter climate here in GA,.I've used it from time to time,I have always like the turface mixed into my other ingredients, ...Magic dirt...lol..I like that ,some folks really believe it

Welcome Barbara. Look up water garden pots. I believe there are similar ones still around for water lilies or lotus. I’ve been using these for 25 years, so I’m not sure where a recent source would be.
Already love that root. It encourages me to be more brave and less mainstream ^^
Do what feels right. It’s ok to make a Bonsai look like all the others if that is what you like. If you like to exercise your creativity and do something that carries your voice, then that is also right. Just do you!

It is with a new caretaker now. I imagine it is doing well, but I won’t be able to provide an update on that one.

I actually think that root would be an ideal position for new growth, but the plant will do it where it wants to and I’ll just make the best of it.
I’ve taken several root and stem cuttings from all of these and I’ll do the same again when I push the growth back further at the next major trimming.
I'm going to try a similar root technique with my Bald/Swamp Cypress when spring comes here trying to make some fake knees.
Good luck with it. I’ve seen examples of the technique as you are planning. A very sharp bend and many years could make that quite convincing.
I have one of those also, but still in a one gal. pot. When do you think I can transplant a nursery stock pine tree? I live in Umpqua ore. You say you are in pacific Northwest and so the timing should be close to the same as your area.
Umpqua would be similar to where I am near Seattle. You can do it now if you have some protection from the cold for the next few weeks. Just do it before the buds really swell.

For the pine bark in your soil mix do you use a "decomposed" pine bark?
I wouldn’t call it decomposed. It comes bagged with the label “Pine Bark Mulch” and often looks pretty newly processed. Sometimes it is a bit shaggier than I expect pine bark to be. The stuff I like has a very useful particular size when sifted and doesn’t break down for awhile. By repotting time, it will be broken down some and the roots will be clinging to it quite well.
