I remember seeing Rodney about 6 months before he died. I was at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, and after the last set at midnight, the host (it was DJ Valentine at the time) told us there was a special guest in the house. The spotlight comes on right behind me. I turn around and there was Rodney, with his wife. He was looking dishevelled in a tore up shirt and some sweats, but he didn't care. He got up and gave us an improptu 15 minute set and he was on FIRE! He ended the set with his "All I ever wanted was one of these" line, refering to 👌. So as the cheering and clapping started to finally die down, I yelled out "HEY RODNEY!" and gave him that sign with my hand. He stopped in his tracks, looked me dead in the eyes, smiled and yelled back "Thanks Kid!" I was 25 at the time and had the biggest fucking smile on my face ever!

Friend of mine lived in New York and was a life guard at the building Rodney lived in. He said he'd come down and swim when no one was there and was always cool with him. Never acted like a big star. He also told me that he would come down the elevator in his robe and enter the bank where then the manager would take him to a private room where he would do his banking transactions away from the public. Not great stories but interesting to me to hear my buddy tell them at the time. This was between 25/30 years ago.

I think Hicks is the greatest I've heard. I don't think, I know. The guy was clever as hell but had this positive underlying message. Was animated and was capable of being a type of soundboard for the jokes that called for it. Never found another comedian that had me laughing but at the same type opened my mind like Bill.

Years before this interview, I interviewed Bob Saget on my Talk radio show.
We talked for over a half hour, and I didn’t make fun of him on any of those shows. I didn’t ask him any questions about the Olsen Twins. Or anything that could be …awkward.
After we were done… he said to me OFF THE AIR “Hey thanks man, that was really great. That was one of the best interviews I’ve ever done. “. And he meant it.
I was so surprised. And I realized, that for him… so many “radio DJs” asked him stupid embarrassing questions. Got lewd about the Olsens, when he still thought of them as little girls. Mocked his shows and his tv jokes. He wasn’t used to someone being just…nice.
Years later… he did this interview with Joe. And you can see how relaxed he is, knowing Joe is gonna be cool with him. People in that business really appreciate that.

Hearing comics discuss the comrodery between touring comics in the 80s and 90s makes me nostalgic of how it used to feel when I was young and playing hardcore music. Back in the late late 90s/early 00s , playing in cities like Boston- NY- NJ - Atlanta-DC- Philly - louisville on the eastern coast of America - a lot of us in bands back then would see each other at random shows and it was like a community. And it seems like comedy had certain areas have certain circuits and comedians would see each other and share stories. Good times.

I like the moment before that when he takes a big bite of a sub sandwich, his wife introduces him to her guests, and Rodney spits the wad of food out into his hand, puts it on his plate, and offers the same hand to the guest to shake.

My theory is that the essence of comedy is truth. The truth about ourselves, and the difference between what we are and what we want to believe we are. Our hubris brought low by an indifferent universe.
