For those wondering why he opened the hydrant so slow. It’s to avoid damaging the pump on the truck. If you open the valve to fast you’ll cause what’s known as a “water hammer” to occur and it will damage the actual impellers of the pump.

Ummm... I've seen a fireman jump into the roof of the building next to us, hanging down using a rope and smashing the widow to get inside the 3rd floor. All that just to make sure no one was left inside because the people next door couldn't remember if they forgot about anyone (it was empty). It took him a while to get out and it was scary af. Respect to all of those risking their lives to protect others. And fuck the neighbors for not remembering if they left someone inside.

The yellow stuff coming ot of hydrant is rust and dirt,you have too flush them first before hose hook up so it does not clog your nozzle up,we have yellow fire trucks here in Las Vegas also ( Clark County Fire ).As far as hooking up, it does no good too get too a fire without a water supply,what the engine carries in water will last about 5 minutes on a big fire.

@@godbluffvdgg no, not all hydrnats follow the same spec. There are open left and open right hydrants. It's up to the city/municipality/water district to spec what type and style of hydrants they allow int heir system. All major hydrant manufacturers can make OL and OR hydrants to accommodate this.

Lol i looked up your astm A325 out of curiosity. Its the International standard for heavy hex structural bolts! This has nothing to do with hydrant standards! You should read AWWA C502 and C503.
The link to Juneau Alaska's spec just shows my point a bit more. They say in their spec that only Open Left hydrants are allowed. This is just showing that open left is not the only direction for open, but the only one allowed there.
Open right hydrants are not as common, but are still common enough to be listed on manufacturers websites.
Ive also attached the sign off sheets for the Waterous hydrant. On 2B-8 it asks what opening direction.

Ive also listed Sioux Falls SD as an example, easiest off the top of my head, of another water system that has different specs. on page 5 in section 2.5 it lists the hydrants as must be Open Right.

That's why homes and business suffered and little discoloration of their fresh drinking water for a little in that area. Question from a german Firefighter: Why do you guys first build up the water supply? Usually our standard procedure is to first build up the nozzle and send two guys forward, in order to cool down the fire as quickly as possible. And while they are at it, someone else builds up the hydrant, if no one is there it’s just the engineer doing it alone. Because we don’t need the hydrant immediately; we only need it after about 2 to 6 Minutes after the nozzle guys start putting water on the fire, when the tank is empty.

When I was a probie, I was taught that when you pull the five-inch line and "catch the plug" the first thing you do is wrap the hose once around the plug and then STAND ON IT and tell the driver to TAKE OFF! This makes sure the hose and coupling don't get dragged down the street, looking bad. Then you get the cap off the plug, set the wrench on the top screw, then attach the coupling onto the plug. After the pumper gets into position and hooks up, he'll signal you when to start water.

You should always check the ports to see if they're tight and as long as one port is open the water can be discharged and pressure won't build up inside the hydrant. Assuming that you didn't turn the operating nut

If you don’t watch the last few seconds it just looks like a peaceful demonstration of how to open and close the hydrant. By the way, are citizens allowed to do it if they have a hose, instead of waiting to volunteer firefighters to arrive?
Those are city firefighters, and so far as I know if you open a hydrant on your own you're in trouble. Not sure how a city with volunteers would take it, maybe count you as one. The fire was well-established by the time it was reported, because everyone assumed someone else had done it, but by the time this company showed, was being fought from an alley on the other side.
