Right after watching your reaction, I walked into the kitchen (where my husband was) and started chanting the "Uga chaka uga" part and my husband started singing the song!! We're 61 years old, so we were young teens when this came out. Great reaction, y'all!! :)
When I was in high school, when this was played on the radio all the time, some of the older boys would walk down the hallways between classes doing the Ooga Chaca Ooga Ooga, lol. I haven't thought of that in literally years...
Originally performed by BJ Thomas. Hit # 5 on Billboards Hot 100 in 1969. Jonathan King did a reggae cover in 1971. Then Blue Swede (Swedish Band) covered it in 1974. Reaching #1 in the USA. And Quentin Tarantino included it in the soundtrack to his 1992 film Reservoir dogs. IN 1998 it was used in an episode of Ally McBeal. And in 2014 it was used for Guardians of the Galaxy.

If this hasn't been mentioned, the gand is actually Blue Swede, not Blue Suede. They are, in fact, from Sweden (just like ABBA!), and only existed as a band for three years (1973-75). They had two Top Ten Hits - this (which is actually a cover of a 1968 song by BJ Thomas), and "Never My Love".
This song reached no 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 6th 1974. That was the very same day that ABBA, also from Sweden, won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Waterloo. This is marked as the day that Swedish music for real broke into international fame.
The singer, Björn Skifs, is one of Swedens greatest artist and is still working at the age of 75! He is a singer, filmmaker and actor, loved by the whole country.

Like no joke that show will be the best ever for me for their music choices and highlights!!!! :)))) Lovvvvvvvvvve this song!!!!! I need to get some flannel jammies on and dance with the imaginary baby now!!!!! hahahahaha
@B Gallagher I so agree with you!!! I loved all the Barry White music that was on the show... and when Barry himself actually came on!! So great!! My fave was Robert Downey Jr. singing Joni Mitchell's song River on the piano to her in one episode. I adore Robert's singing voice. His version of Smile is the best!!! All this talking about Ally McBeal makes me want to sing in a bathroom with my friends.. or in my bedroom in front of the dresser mirror.. hairbrush as a mic and in my flannel pjs to some great songs like Hooked On A Feeling!! lol Oh the great memories that music can instill in us all... :)))
In the first part of 1974 I was working my first full-time job, which required me to start at 5am. One day I was driving to work at about 4:45am through the dark, mostly deserted streets, not quite fully awake yet, and suddenly this song, which I had not heard before, came on the radio. For a few moments I thought I was in the Twilight Zone or something, trying get myself fully awake and figure out if this was really happening! 50 years later I still remember that moment quite clearly, and this record has always been special to me as a result. Thanks for a great reaction to it!
Really nice to hear and see this reaction on this swedish classic song from the 70s from Sweden,my home and native country..LOVE IT!..Great song...just song
This song came out when I was in high school in the early ‘70s. At lunchtime when someone played it on the jukebox the football team’s table would chant the “Ooga-Chaka” vocal in unison. Great moments and memories. 😄
This song instantly transports me to summer days in the 70’s when our family would head to a lakeside beach (eastern Canada) and my older sisters would sun themselves on a blanket listening to their transistor radio. No matter what time of year it is when I hear this song, it feels like summertime to me. 📻 🎶 🏖️
I absolutely love this song!! "I'm hooked on a feelin' high on believin you're in love with me." The best lyrics a teenage girl can hear. The whole song had us all dreaming of all the good love that turned him on. Lol. This kind of song was a constant in the early 70s especially. They made us all believe in love and that all guys were good guys who would love us. ❤
Hubby & I were playing Yahtzee tonight to a 70's rock station on Pandora and this song came on! Always a favorite of mine! But made us both smile, like you 2 are!
Another one-hit-wonder that was important in creation of rock and roll. It was known by every garage band in the 60's and70's. "Wild Thing" by The Trogs. There are LOTS of covers of this song. The original is by the Trogs.
Why was that a one hit wonder as well as wild thing being a hit in the US there was also Love is all Around. There were also a plethora of hits in the UK
I think you meant The Troggs. And I remember other songs by them "With A Girl Like You", "Love Is All Around", "I Can't Control Myself" & "Hi Hi Hazel".
The band name was Blåblus (in english "blue blouse"), but called Blue Swede on the international market, the singer is Björn Skifs, he is famous here in Sweden, but international is this cover a one hit wonder. Another bandmember was Anders Berglund a pianist and condutor who was it for Sweden in Eurovision Song Contest the last time this uses, and he was musical director for Eurovision Song Contest 1992 in Malmö, and was 1 of 2 original pianist in the swedish TV-program "Så ska det låta" (103 episodes)
Also famous for the movie STRUL. See it, you will regret it.

Thank you! I know this one since about the time in came out (born in the 60s…), but I never knew the singer was Björn Skifs. I mostly associate him with Chess (the musical).
This was originally done by BJ Thomas in 1968. Huge hit. Should react to some of his stuff. Raindrops won an Oscar. His first hit was a cover of Hank Williams "I'm so lonesome I could cry." Its amazing.
When I was a youngster I was in a bar. Yes I was not old enough to be in a bar. But where I live back then nobody cared. Anyway I heard this song and I couldn't find it anywhere. Well at the bar it came on the Juke Box. So I ran to the bar owner and talked him into let me come back the next day. Getting the record. Running home and taping it. Then returning it. I was so happy. So yes I have memories of this song.
This takes me back to my childhood and back when musicians actually wrote music and played almost perfect harmonies between the voice and the instrumentation…true story tellers

One of the greatest gimmicks in pop/rock history. Instantly memorable! Even without the ooga-chucka, the production is fabulous. The use of different instruments, and the timing of the pauses between verses, and the lead singer's voice, should have made it a hit even without the gimmick.
I love the comment about this song being sweet, because Björn Skifs, the singer, is famously the sweetest. He's as far from a macho dude as you could get--world class nice guy. (He's not a personal friend, but we all know him here in Sweden.)
This was always great and I loved the intro, but yes check out BJ Thomas original. Also his Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head,Rock n Roll Lullaby,IJust Can’t Help Believing,

Mixed in with some Johnny Cash, Sandy Nelson - Drums a go go, Herb Alpert, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong from my parents. Keep them coming, I could go on and on...
This song is a cover. The original was done by B.J.Thomas (R.I.P.) who also famously sang "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head". By the way, it's Blue Swede (pronounced like Sweed), probably because the band was from Sweden.
Now you have to hear the original version by B. J. Thomas, especially since he was born in HUGO, OKLAHOMA! The Blue Swede version was heard in the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy". This was a great movie and music plays a big part!
I remember listening to this song over and over again, couldn't get enough of it. The lead Singers voice is amazing. This song is so much fun. Maybe you need to listen to it a few more times to really appreciate it. Those were the days.
Love that you like this music. This is my era & there were so many great songs. Of course we had a lot of garbage too but so many great songs & you've reacted to quite a few.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a Marvel Comics movie. The mix music cassette ,with this song included, was given to the one main character by his mother, who died when he was young.
This is a song of innocent joy - I almost cry every time I hear this because it brings back my youth and reminds me of my high-school (junior-high?) sweetheart. Loved your reaction! Thanks.
Being a hundred years old and remembering this tune as it was released back in the days in Sweden, we just thought it was THE best tune. Björn Skifs (singer) is epic in Swedish music history =D #lottalove
I remember the early 70s my brother was older than me and he let me listen to this for the first time I must’ve been about 6 or 7 years old and I thought it was hilarious to hear that sound in the beginning but then it turned out to be a really good song. He would tell me they were played in the clubs and I actually would see him dance to it at home. He passed away. I miss him but he taught me some things. Love you guys keep up the good work.
A song with a similar vibe is 1970 hit "Knock Three Times" by Tony Orlando & Dawn. You have never reacted to Tony Orland & Dawn but they were huge in the early 70's having several huge #1 hits. I really like the vibe of Knock Three Times but their most famous song is "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" about a lover who has served their time in prison and is not sure if his lover wants to see him back. He'll know if he sees a yellow ribbon tied around an oak tree on the way home. Sappy but heart lifting and matches your theme of "Make Someone Smile". In "Knock Three Times" a guy has fallen in love with the girl who lives below him and wants to know if she feels the same. If she knocks 3 times on the ceiling it means she wants him, twice on the pipes means she isn't going to show. It has a great rhythm and was written to kind of get the feel of the song "Up On The Roof" another classic. Time to react to some Tony Orlando & Dawn.
When my son was in high school the choir they were in did this song. And just like Jay said they dressed up and danced around in a Polynesian manner. The kids seemed shocked so many parents and grand parents knew the song and were singing along. It was a great time!
Y'all should check out the funny Michael Knight (aka David Hasselhoff) music video for this song. 😂 While you're at it, there's also "True Survivor" & "Jump In My Car"
There is a tie-in between this song and another, "Running Bear" . After listening to it I know it's a song you'll like, too. It's a story song, the artists voice is "pure", there is some sax in there for you Amber and there is a chant reminiscent to Hooked on a Feeling. Give it a listen.
@@djhrecordhound4391 Bwahaha! You've got an amazing memory! All I remember is that I had my 45's alphabetized and had it under T for The Best for best! Stupid kids hey? Haha!
Amber, your faithful viewers wouldn't steer you wrong. You know that. You've been introduced to a lot of songs that start one way, then swing a 180 and become something else. Before the end, you are digging it. Just like this one.
Amber’s smile throughout the song says it all. I enjoyed this song when it first came out and in Guardians of the Galaxy. Your videos make me smile everyday.
One of my favourite songs from the 70's. Also check out Player - Baby Come Back (if you haven't already). Also if you enjoy this style of music you must check out the 2 Guardians of the Galaxy movies. They are full of 70's classics!!
Classic 70s AM Gold - funny enough guys, this was a HIGE hit here in New Zealand. You should check out Couldn’t Get it Right by Climax Blues Band ! Similar vibe. (Not a Māori All Black Haka vibe though)
Can’t get a much better feel good song than this! It ALWAYS puts me in an amazing mood. I’ve kind of been MIA, so not sure if Amber’s haircut is new or not, but it is soooooo cute. Always adorable !
One cover that they would like speaking of instruments is I Believe in Music by Gallery! It kinda has the same starts n stops now that they mentioned it..
This was released in 1968. It was recorded by the great country/pop crossover star B.J. Thomas. It was also done by a few others and then these guys recorded this cover in like 1974. Y'all should check out some of B.J.s songs., like Raindrops keep falling on my head or I can't help believing or Another somebody done somebody wrong song. These guys were only around from 73 to 75. They were a swedish band, and did several covers of songs.
This song was the first with a Swedish band to reach #1 at the Billboard charts! Before the Swedish band Blue Swede recorded the song others had already done it but this is like the version/most famous one. When it peaked it caught everyone meaning the band, record company, managers etc completely off guard. The singer was touring in Sweden when the label managed to get in touch with him and asked why he wasn't in America like yesterday! Like i said no one was prepared for it.
Another one from my playlist. This was a bit of a one hit wonder though as the group didn't last long. Also, they were Swedish. Suggest Go all the way, by the Raspberries. ua-cam.com/video/R5u25XGGo-E/v-deo.html
A little correction/pronunciation help.... It's *Haka* dance of the Maori people of New Zealand, and *Swede* as in Sweden, not Suede. 🙂 There used to be a commercial with the beginning chant and the "Hooked on a feeling" part in it. I want to say it was for Scope mouthwash. 😄
@@gregoryleo4640 that curriculum was added in the mid 60s. The song was recorded in 73. The band members spoke little to no English when they recorded it.

Released in 73 i was 10 yrs old i remember this from field trip skate parties in ventura ca.
Brings back memories!!!
This song is a cover. The original was done by B.J.Thomas (R.I.P.) who also famously sang "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head". By the way, it's Blue Swede (pronounced like Sweed), probably because the band was from Sweden.
yep he did
A big song from 1974. They would play this all the time on the radio and I would sing this song at work along with my coworkers.
This song is so great. And Amber..your hair looks fantastic.
Nice spoiler
Love this old school jam. Always have! And yep, its the 70s...the best era in music!
I have loved this song ever since I was a little kid. When Guardians of the Galaxy came out it introduced the song to a whole new generation.👍🎧
Yes, 1972-73 timeframe... remember it well of course... totally memorable!
Another sweet song by another one-hit wonder is "More Today Than Yesterday" by Spiral Staircase--with an ample supply of horns.
Love you guys keep up the good work.
best version of the song! glad yall liked it!
Omg, you have brought back so many songs from my youth. So many songs forgotten. Thank you guys!
Love, love, love this song…it’s ❤️🔥❤️🔥
My childhood favourite 😍 74❤
Actually got introduced/reminded about this song via the TV show Ally McBeal and the dancing baby. Good memories!
It's one of the song's from Guardians of the Galaxy that Quill plays on his cassette. Its from his playlist.
When my son was in high school the choir they were in did this song.
And just like Jay said they dressed up and danced around in a Polynesian manner. The kids seemed shocked so many parents and grand parents knew the song and were singing along. It was a great time!
Am I the only one noticing Amber's adorable new hairdo and she's just looking AMAZING? 🧨
As usual, great reaction. This was a great song for sure!!!! yes! "I wasn't expecting this sound after the start of the song." EXACTLY.
Y'all should check out the funny Michael Knight (aka David Hasselhoff) music video for this song. 😂 While you're at it, there's also "True Survivor" & "Jump In My Car"
You beat me to it! The video is hilariously, horribly cheezy - but his singing isn't bad.
I love this whole song ever since i was a kid. I especially love the bass.
There is a tie-in between this song and another, "Running Bear" . After listening to it I know it's a song you'll like, too. It's a story song, the artists voice is "pure", there is some sax in there for you Amber and there is a chant reminiscent to Hooked on a Feeling. Give it a listen.
I remember " running bear " brought a smile to my face .... thank you
This has to be a top 3 reaction by both of you, I really enjoyed watching you discover new music to you.
This was my absolute favorite when I was still a young teen. Used to play it just cranked up on my 45RPM record player. Haha! Isn't it catchy?
...the pinkish label with a big "EMI" in red on the bottom...?
Nah, never saw it...
😆😂🤣
Brilliant song, makes you smile. Bjorn Skiffs has such a great voice and had a big solo career in Sweden too.
One of my favourite songs from the 70's. Also check out Player - Baby Come Back (if you haven't already). Also if you enjoy this style of music you must check out the 2 Guardians of the Galaxy movies. They are full of 70's classics!!
Thats because they have a taste for great music ,,
You're so cute Amber! Love watching you both discover old music. Thankful for your channel, always picks me up.
Do the original too! BJ Thomas's masterful vocal....this was a fun cover, but the original is a heart swelling classic.
So glad y'all reacted to this! It's so different. I knew you'd like it! So nice!!
Classic 70s AM Gold - funny enough guys, this was a HIGE hit here in New Zealand.
You should check out Couldn’t Get it Right by Climax Blues Band ! Similar vibe.
(Not a Māori All Black Haka vibe though)
I love seeing these kids diggin this awesome tune from when I was a teenage kid...when we listened to the radio !
You have to listen to BJ's original version also. They are both great!!!!
Haven't heard that since I was a child. Very cool. I knew every note of it!!!!
Can’t get a much better feel good song than this! It ALWAYS puts me in an amazing mood.
I’ve kind of been MIA, so not sure if Amber’s haircut is new or not, but it is soooooo cute. Always adorable
!
this was one of those songs I listened too back in Jr. High, during that just starting to date time, thanks for the happy flash back!
If you liked this song, A similar one is Nice To Be With You by Gallery. Both are nice, fun songs...
I always preferred the BJ Thomas original, but this version was okay too.
Great song too!
Great minds think alike. I suggested the Raspberries - Go All The Way when they did Eric Carmen's Hungry Eyes.
I like the live version of Go All The Way best.
As soon as i seen the kiss shirt and poster of jimmy i knew you two jam some good music ! Hooked on a feeling makes you want to dance its golden
A little correction/pronunciation help....
It's *Haka* dance of the Maori people of New Zealand, and *Swede* as in Sweden, not Suede. 🙂
There used to be a commercial with the beginning chant and the "Hooked on a feeling" part in it. I want to say it was for Scope mouthwash. 😄
love how you 2 wear your musical emotions on your sleeves
The band members didn't speak English so they learned this cover phonetically. Love their version.
I’m pretty sure they could speak English. Or where did you read that?
Joseph, not true. Swedes are required to learn English in school starting at a young age. English is spoken everywhere in Sweden.
@@gregoryleo4640 that curriculum was added in the mid 60s. The song was recorded in 73. The band members spoke little to no English when they recorded it.
This song came out when I was in high school, and is one of those songs that always takes me back to that time.
A recommendation for female Friday, Susan Tedeschi singing "Hurts so Bad" live at Austin City Limits. link: ua-cam.com/video/kRfh1M-0X-k/v-deo.html. I keep posting this because I know that both of you are going to love it. Someone said that if Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin had a baby it would be Susan Tedeschi.
LOL we all sang the oooga chucka at the beginning over and over. It's was such a fun song as a kid to sing
The best version of this song is by B J Thomas. I would be interested to know what you think of it and how it compares to Blue Swede's version. BJ Thomas is definitely someone Amber would love!
Good job J! This was an early 70s radio hit!!!
Loved your reaction to this song! Sends me back to my teen days! Thank you!!
OOGA-CHAKA!!!
The chant of my youth! Glad you guys liked it.
