    Guys,
Dan Fogelberg wrote leader of the band in honor and respect for his father who was hospitalized at the time. He finally understood his musical heritage with his father's story. His father did get to hear the song before passing away.😊

This might be one of Dan's second hundred hits. In his career, he quietly churned out a dozen or more hits per year for at least 2 dozen years. His style was never limited to a single genre, so he probably should be in multiple music halls of Fame.

Anytime I think of this song I cry. I grew up in a musical family. My dad sang and played the guitar. He taught me to sing this song when I was just a little girl. Every time he pulled out his guitar, I would beg him to play it while I sang. It became our song. One day several years after he died (he died young) I was coming home from work late at night. I had a sudden longing for my dad and I started weeping as I drove. This song came on the radio. I had not sung it or even thought about it in years - and there it was randomly on the radio. I sang along and still remembered every word. It was a hug from my dad on the other side.

The newest one to be added to the list is the amazing young Jazz singer, Angelina Jordan. Dan was a great story teller through all of his songs. "Same Auld Lang Syne" really happened and is always played at Christmas time. One of his first hits "Run for the Roses" he was commissioned by the Kentucky Derby to write a song for the upcoming Derby that year. While he lived in south western Colorado in the San Juan mountain's he owned horses. I had the pleasure to see him twice at Red Rocks. RIP Dan you are truly missed.

This is one of Fogelberg's most personal songs. It's a tribute to his father, Lawrence Fogelberg, who was a band director.
The senior Fogelberg began his musical journey directing high school bands in his home state of Illinois, first in Peoria and then at Pekin. He married Margaret Irvine, a talented singer who directed her sorority chorus, in 1946, and the couple had three children. Dan was the youngest, born in 1951. By this time, his dad was the band director at Bradley University in Peoria, where the family lived. The band would play concerts and perform at basketball and football games; Dan often told a story about his father letting him "conduct" the band when he was four years old, standing in front of his father with a baton while his dad did the job behind him. "It was an amazing feeling," Dan recounted. "It felt both very magical and powerful. And I was fearless."
Fogelberg recorded this for his 1979 album Phoenix, but felt it was too sentimental for the album and didn't release it until 1981 on The Innocent Age. His father died the following year.
When Fogelberg wrote this song, he didn't hear it as a hit, but the song expressed something that many children have trouble articulating: a love for their father. The intimacy of the song actually broadened its appeal, and it became one of his most enduring songs and one that fans would often mention to him as one they connected with.
The line, "Thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go," is a reference to Fogelberg dropping out of college. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, but decided to leave in the middle of a semester to pursue music - not what most parents want to hear. Fogelberg's father was disappointed, but supported his son's decision, telling Dan to try it for a year. The music thing worked out well: Dan drove to Los Angeles, got a record deal, and became one of the top-selling solo artists of the '70s.
The song concludes with part of a performance by the UCLA Band of the John Philip Sousa march "The Washington Post" arranged by Fogelberg's father.

Thanks for playing this song and I'm glad you like it! Dan snuck in one more nugget of appreciation for his father that wasn't mentioned in the lyrics; he added the orchestra music in the middle and at the end of the song. French horns and trumpets are not typically found in a primarily acoustic guitar song, but by including them he not only paid tribute to his father, but to his father's music too.

He just started gaining some success in writing when he became sick. It was so sudden and aggressive, that we did not have time to even plan for him to leave. He was our lighthouse guiding us home in the ravaging waters of life. Now I am a Father of three, and I do try my hardest to lead my children so that they may never be lost. Whenever I hear this song I'm always struck by the notion that Dan Fogelberg, who achieved a good measure of musical success and fame, wanted to let the world know that his own success is to be credited to his father. Not every artist achieves fame and fortune for their work, but Dan Fogelberg had his head on straight and his heart in gear. May he and his band leader dad play heavenly tunes henceforth.

This song has always reminded me of my dad. Came on while I was getting ready for his funeral last year… I took it as a sign that he was ok. I even rewrote the chorus for him…

I’m posting this comment with tears in my eyes, because this song has always had a very special meaning to me, as he describes my father as well. He served his country in WWII, came home and gave up his dreams of becoming a famous singer and took a steady job to support his family. He played a major part in my life in my love of music and with the work ethic he instilled in me. I read the lyrics of this song at his funeral because it meant so much to me. Thank you for including it in your song reviews.

One of the greatest storytellers of his time. Two of my favourites are Same Auld Lang Syne, based on a true story of Dan's chance encounter with an old girlfriend (always brings a lump to my throat) and Longer, a great profession of forever love.

This song has a special and deep meaning! A year ago I lost my Dad to cancer. He was a Marine during the Korean War, and was in for 4 years. He was an exceptional Christian man and we all grew up in the faith going to church every Sunday. My Dad had a great 2nd tenor voice, he led the choir and loved music! Mom played the piano. A lady from church contacted me about a month after his passing a d told me a moving story that brought many tears to my eyes!! (Referencing how he sculpted souls) Early next year I plan on getting the words of this song tattooed on my right chest in his honor. I'll probably cry the entire time. Now I'm retired Navy and have my share of tats and never teared up on any of them! Glad I was one of the many requestors of this song!! And thank you for your honest and heart-felt reaction!! Means so much!! Stay blessed!!

Dan Fogelberg was always a favorite of mine. I've been listening to this song for 40 years now, and every time I hear it I choke up when he sings, "Papa, I don't think I said, "I love you" near enough." While I always loved my father deeply, our relationship was often strained, and this line hits a little too close to home. Another great musician who died way too young.

The orchestral part at the end (also heard earlier in the song) is taken from the composer John Philip Sousa, but was arranged by Dan's father, the 'leader of the band' himself, Lawrence Peter Fogelberg - who, over the course of his career, was a band director for two high schools and a university in Illinois.

I lost my parents to a car accident back in 2004. This song was played at their funeral to honor my father Patrick's memory, my hero. The song "Let It Be" by The Beatles was played to honor the memory of my mother Mary, my best friend. I have a very hard time making it through either of those songs, even after 18 years. They were born on the same day, three years apart, and they died on the same day, my other at age 60 and my father at 57.

Fogelberg has great lyrics and so many great songs: Auld Lang Syne; Longer; Netherlands; Make Love Stay; Power of Gold; Dancing Shoes; Seeing you again. Really many of his lyrics are poetic. Dan's love life took many turns, and through those turns, he wrote lots about love - when it's new and romantic and mourning its death.
Edit ... I really like the song "Seeing you again" and apparently so did Fogelberg: "To me, one of my very best songs. Written after meeting my soon to be ex-wife in Hawaii to see if the marriage could be saved. It couldn't." (Dan Fogelberg)

Another great singer/song writer/musician taken before his time. He was 56 when he succumbed to cancer. I absolutely love his rendition of "Rhythm of the Rain." It's one of those songs that when it's over, you immediately hit the re-play so you can hear it again. Once is never enough.
"Run for the Roses" is another great song. It talks about the horses bred to run in the Kentucky Derby. I get choked up over my own horses whenever I hear it. Such a beautiful song. If you close your eyes when you listen, you can see everything he's talking about. The babies being born to them laying in a field enjoying the sun, having no clue what lies ahead. The sleek, muscular bodies heading down the back stretch to finish, going with everything they can give...such amazing animals horses are.
"There's A Place In The World For A Gambler" and "Lonely in Love" are two more great songs. To me, they are both one of those songs where after you're done listening to it, you just sit there and say, "Wow!"
If you like the blues, then you need to listen to this one, "Road Beneath My Wheels."

He said this song “wrote itself” quickly and he didn’t even intend for it to be recorded, let alone be released as a single. I cannot listen to this song without my eyes puddling up on the last verse.
