Apologies for the Uncle Phil scene being cut out. We wanted to keep it in but UA-cam wouldn't let us sadly 😟 That scene really touched us both personally, and if you wanted to view it for yourself, it's Season 4 Episode 24 of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air titled "Papa's Got a Brand New Excuse."
Also please let us know if you'd be interested in us setting up an alternative viewing site like a Patreon where we can show clips in full context without having to navigate around UA-cam's system 🙏

Just gotta say, i love the way you can explore therapy and psychology through fictional characters. The fictional characters and stories makes it much easier to understand. From the therapist; we get WHY characters take certain actions. From the filmmaker, we get HOW these actions are expressed. When put together, it can lead to good or bad storytelling. By comparing fictional characters and stories, we can see exactly why similar stories fail and others succeed through psychology and filmmaking. You guys can express the same opinions as the audience, but break down why we feel that way. It's suprising how much psychology the audience picks up on, we just don't have the expertise to express it correctly. Anyways, keep up the good work. I have no doubt you guys will be big in the future.

I need to take your comment and use it as the description for the channel! Super kind and insightful breakdown! 🤯 Totally agree, the audience is aware of so much of what's happening under the surface even if they can't articulate it. Curtis and I will keep doing our best to handle that part of the equation 😄 Thanks for believing in us 🙏

An important thing to understand about Gohan is that he never wanted to fight. When he's introduced in episode 1 of the series he says he wants to go to school, study hard, and become a doctor. The reason Chichi keeps Goku from training Gohan to fight is because it would be a distraction from the life he wants for himself. She only cares about Gohan's grades as much as she does because Gohan wants to be a scholar. At the start of the Buu saga we find that Gohan has become rusty because, in the aftermath of the fight with Cell, he stopped training to try living a relatively normal life as a student.
Goku and Gohan are fundamentally different characters. Goku enjoys fighting and is constantly seeking to test his strength against the strongest opponents he can find. He wants to be pushed beyond his limits and find greater strength within himself, and he believes he has seen the same in Gohan who has on several occasions shown outbursts of incredible power that prove he has incredible potential. What he fails to realize, though, is that Gohan does not enjoy fighting, and these outbursts of power have only ever surfaced when he is desperate to save his friends or family from suffering. It could be said that Goku is selfish when it comes to fighting, while Gohan is entirely selfless.
Goku would have absolutely loved to fight a full-powered Cell and perhaps, from his perspective, he might have seen sending Gohan to fight and then tossing Cell a senzu bean to be a gift in some weird way. But to Gohan the scenario was a traumatically terrifying nightmare that he wanted no part of. Gohan doesn't have the drive to defeat Cell for his own sake in a one-on-one fight, especially while everyone he cares about is watching safely from the sidelines. Piccolo, who understands Gohan better than his own father does, comments at one point that Gohan is probably thinking something along the lines of, "Why are they just standing there and watching me suffer? Is a fair fight more important that my life?"
The only reason Gohan ever stood a chance was because Cell happened to share Goku's desire to fight opponents at their strongest, while also understanding what drives Gohan better than his own father does. Cell created minions to attack the other fighters on the sidelines for the sole purpose of triggering Gohan's need to protect others and push him to his full potential. Had he only been interested in defeating Gohan, rather than being tempted to see Gohan at the height of his power, he would easily have won.
As far as Gohan is concerned, Goku has only ever seemed to care about seeing him grow up to be a powerful fighter. Gohan has never been secretive about wanting to be a scholar and not wanting to fight, but Goku doesn't seem to care that much about what his son wants. Maybe, being a full-blooded saiyan, he's simply incapable of comprehending that Gohan would want to do anything other than becoming the strongest fighter he can be. At any rate, Goku fails to understand Gohan at a fundamental level the way several other characters are shown to understand him, and this flaw of Goku's character ultimately resulted in him putting his son in mortal danger with the fate of the world hanging over his head.

@@FrameOfMindBrosyes! When you were talking about the question from the orphan girl, all my brain kept going back to was little Gohan and how Piccolo stepped in to take on the role (even if it wasn’t his original intent and started out initially selfish). Whether he meant to or not, Piccolo taught this young vulnerable child who just lost his father to violence, not just how to fight, but how to survive, how to be independent and take responsibility. Piccolo’s influence was so impactful that in the fight against the Saiyans just the threat of Piccolo’s disapproval/disappointment is enough for Gohan to overcome his own understandable fears in an overwhelming threatening situation to try and take action. And when his father is alive but his mentor is dead, Gohan decides to take action for the sake of his mentor even though he is fully within his rights to stay home safe with his now reunited biological family. Why? Because in his mind, Piccolo’s death is his responsibility and so Gohan needs to be the one to bring him back. Gohan decided on his own to travel to his mentor’s ancestral homeland in a quest to bring Piccolo back to life while his father was still recuperating in a hospital. That just speaks volumes to me.

I cannot tell you how refreshing that shot of Naruto in the water is after experiencing countless examples of bewildering/misused dutch angles. Didn't appreciate it at the time I first watched that part in the show, but looking at it again years later, and even more so taking into account what you said about the great difficulty of trying to achieve such a thing outside of animation, it really nailed what the feelings and ideas it was going for (and more). You both made excellent points about its artistic and narrative functions.
Edit: Correct me if I'm inaccurate about it being a dutch angle or not. It seems like one to me, but also... something else, and if there's another term for it I don't know what it is. Regardless, I still think it does the whole portrayal of 'psychological uneasiness' / 'psychological tension' thing better than many attempts at dutch angles.

    • @FrameOfMindBros
      @FrameOfMindBros  8 місяців тому +1

So glad you feel the same way about it! Yeah nothing feels worse than an out of place dutch angle 😂 Glad I could show you why I loved that shot so much and super glad it resonated with you 🙏
And you're correct 😄 it has other names like German angle or Oblique angle but Dutch angle / tilt is the most common variation other than just calling it "off axis"

One of my favourite personal ttrpg characters, embodies these archetypes pretty strongly, although I think she leans a bit towards the warrior and the king. I have actually described her as fatherly in the past, without being aware of these archetypes. She exists with a very gender neutral game world, so I don't think it matter in her instance, but it still got me thinking: how does gender nonconformity effect such strongly gendered archetypes? How does it shape their story/environment and what does it mean for the individual? I would love to hear you discuss this. I feel like it's connected to this role vs identity thing you mention in another video.

1:02:50 I usually see this as Goku being a bad father. This act usually would be objectively good, but as Piccolo later points out, Gohan doesn't have the temperament to take up his father's mantel. It's a vital piece of knowledge that Goku lacks because even when he is physically there, he is unaware of the internal world of his children.
Even more than his absence, it's his lack of curiosity about his son's that makes Goku a dubious father in my eyes.

I think the slight creepiness of the naruto underwater, is that when someone is subjecting themselves to discomfort or pain, but not doing anything to relieve it; shows that there is something else psycologically going on to where one is not caring to relieve their discomfort. Kind of like they are numb or rebellious or might do something rash due to this,. You might think, "If they dont care about taking care of their own pain, then they might not care about my own either, threrfore I might be in danger.

    Hot take.
The whole Pain encounter was executed really well.
The fight looks jank and poor, but where it counts the most is where the budget went. The fight might be the climax and the peak of emotion, normally. But in this fight, and in most fights in Naruto, the climax of the scene is when Naruto executes his Talk no-Jitsu and you get these wonderful scenes where you feel the empathy Naruto feels towards his enemy.
Naruto may be ninja Jesus, but just as Jesus's super power is empathy and shouldering the burden, so is Naruto's true power. The Talk no-Jitsu may be a meme, but it is really his most powerful ability.
Naruto brings Zabusa to the realm of the living and realizing his love for Haku, that then saves the Bridge village. Naruto shows Gara how to love where Gara hates, even when the two are just like the other. And this carry all the way trough the show, when his final challenge is empathizing with the Big Bad Evil Guy, Madara. And then finally the rematch at the waterfall with Zasuke where the two finally overcomes their differences and mend their divide that might have been broken forever.
Naruto might be the strongest Ninja to ever be, but that is not his strength. His true power is empathy.
