    Do they actually transfer humidity or is it just that a change in air temp changes the Relative Humidity of the air, due to how much moisture air can hold at a given temp? Genuine question as I don't understand how something can be airtight to stop air mixing but also transfer humidity ✌

    Do they really not mix? The color looked different.
    Also, does the core have to be replaced? Is there a secondary filter to remove the outdoor dust and containments? How much does the core cost if so? I know these HRVs can vary quite a lot in size depending on how many square feet they are intended for.

      You just need to clean the core thoroughly once a year. The core is a big square-ish looking plastic filter which isn't that expensive and is quite easy to remove and clean. My HRV manual says to replace the core every 5 years

    • @steadyeddie7453

      I believe this system in the video is an ERV, not an HRV. There is a difference. An HRV is similar but does not control humidity. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

    What other technology is being used here besides convection / conduction? If that was all that's going on, then the numbers shown at 1:08 don't make sense. If there is cold air outside and warm air inside, we can get close to the same temperature in the fresh and exhaust air from convection / conduction, but I don't see how we the heat almost fully gets transferred from one set of air from the other. At best, the fresh and exhaust should be the same if only convection / conduction, right?

    if you pull air from a kitchen where the air has contaminants aren't you going to ruin the core? I would imagine that core would get greasy and clog up pretty quickly?

      You wouldn’t connect kitchen exhaust to an ERV. Only laundry rooms and bathrooms. Remember, the moist air isn’t used when being sent to the return of the HVAC unit, but directly vented to the outdoors. The heat from the moist air is the only part transferred. The plastic core would be non microbial and drain any moisture to the bottom drain pan.

    • @tylermack6387
      @tylermack6387 3 роки тому

      @@surronzak8154 I would look at a picture of an ERV core. You’ll see how the passing air does not combine with the crossing streams. The only transfer that happens in the core is heat. The humidity from the wetter/warmer stream will condense when the heat transfers to the colder dryer outside air. Then drain out of the ERV.
      Humidity would transfer when using an enthalpy wheel in a commercial application.

    Would I need to install a unit like this to help with moisture on the windows in the winter time? I live in south east Wisconsin. The home is only 1 year old. We have condensation on the windows when we get up in the morning. Humidity levels are upper 40s low 50s in the house during the winter time.

    • @ReallyericaTj
      @ReallyericaTj 3 роки тому

      It sounds like you need a dehumidifier!
      Rather than humidity or moisture control, ventilation (bringing in fresh outdoor air and exhausting stale/contaminated indoor air) is the purpose of an energy recovery ventilation system like the one shown in this video.
      However, if you are indeed looking to install a ventilation system, this is the sort you would want to use if you are already dealing with humidity/moisture problems! Other types of ventilation systems do not remove moisture from incoming air and would potentially *increase* the amount of moisture in your home.

    • @Martin71209

      I believe there are replaceable filters which filter incoming outside air to remove pollen etc. and also filters on the exhaust inside air side, before it enters the core to prevent dust, pet hair etc. clogging up the core.

      Yeh I'm no expert but I think saying it transfers humidity is a mistake, as far as I'm aware these cores only transfer temperature not air (which you wouldn't want) or humidity/water. Obviously a change in air temp changes its Relative Humidity due to how much moisture air can hold at a given temp but that is something entirely different 🤷‍♂
