  • In this one I tell my story. I talk about going to university, my dad being ill, becoming a teacher, quitting teaching to become a HGV driver, starting my UA-cam channel, starting my first class 2 job, getting my class 1 licence, switching driving jobs, feeling bored of HGV driving, getting banned from filming, quitting my job & what's next in my career.

It's one thing getting your licence and being able to drive trucks. It's a completely different thing doing it for a living. I'm sorry to say that it's generally a crap job and most trucking firms are still living in the dark ages with the amount of hours they expect you to commit to every single day.

Hayley , your honesty about both working as a HGV driver and how you feel and have been treated as a driver are incredibly revealing and enlightening. There is definitely a large void that you can fill which would both fulfill your ambitions and I believe benefit other drivers and the industry. As an ex driver who left due to the unsocial effects on my family as I worked as a driver I for one really believe you can help to bring this industry up to date . I genuinely wish you well and will look forward to future blogs . Respect

Hayley this is another great vlog o think you are really driven and by keeping all your options open is great way of finding the right path for you I have commented before like many others your driving tutorials are excellent and for new drivers such a help I think your calling is being a hgv driver instructor but I would of enjoyed seeing you do some European runs that's something I've wanted to do but never had the balls
Can't wait for your next vlog hope you pass those exams🤞👌

Hi Hayley, I really felt for you when you were talking about losing your Dad, I was a bit older at 17 when my Dad died but it was still a shock as it was more sudden than for your Dad, plus we all lived in the farm cottage together and I would spend hours helping him down the farm😔 your tutorial videos are very helpful to new pass drivers like me and although I won't be doing any recording of my day I will still be busy

I feel a little bit similar to you in some ways. I did Biomedical Science too, didn't like lab work and worked in low paid jobs between 21 and 24. I then went to do speech and language therapy and now I'm thinking about an HGV career. I think sometimes taking risks and changing your plan is what takes people towards success. It might seem to others on the outside that you're not serious about anything, don't know what you want etc but I think you are a high achiever and you want job satisfaction and quality of life. Nothing wrong with that. There's no shame in changing career. I'm finally learning this and ultimately, people do admire you when they see you chase your dreams and do different things. I think you're inspiring.

    • @TruckDriverHayley
      @TruckDriverHayley  Рік тому

Taking risks is what life is about. There's no point looking back in years to come and wondering "what if". Some people will never understand one another or the things they do, and people will always have their opinions. You are right about me wanting job satisfaction and quality of life, who wouldn't want to work towards that? My advice to you would be to think about HGV driving in terms of long hours (unsociable ones too), possible time away from home (nights out), being treated like a second class citizen (sometimes), a poor quality of life/facilities (sometimes) and how on earth you're supposed to close the curtain on a 45ft trailer on a windy day! 😳😂 For me the driving was always a stepping stone to lead me onto something else. I knew I'd never do full time driving forever. I knew that when I went into it, so what I've described above didn't bother me. I never knew where I would end up, but I knew I wouldn't be a driver forever. I know where I'm going now. It's taken me and while, but I've decided to pursue the idea of being a freelance HGV instructor, dangerous goods instructor, casual driver and an external transport manager - with a hope to teach that too someday. Again, it's the job satisfaction thing. Now I want to see other people's happy faces when they pass their tests and follow their dreams 😊. Some people think I'm mad, swapping jobs all the time, but you have got to follow your heart and look back in years to come with no regrets. If something doesn't work out, at least you can say you tried it. Thanks for the kind words. Sorry about the long comment. 😊

Hayley, first condolences on loosing your Dad early and now a cousin at such a young age. We also lost a cousin at 31 who had two young daughters, that was a motorcycle accident on the way to work. As you say you never know what's around the corner. I'm sorry to hear that you have become bored with driving and are now "semi retired" there may be a pun there. Lucky for me I still love the work driving my own lorry, obviously I don't work so hard these days, well I have been doing it for more than 38 years now, almost 30 as an owner driver. I wish you well as always with your next challenges, the CPC, ADR and hopefully instructing. I know you said you did not want to buy your own lorry but you could buy your own outfit to teach with, just a thought. Then if work is slack you could pull the odd trailer for different firms. All the best and respect to you Hayley for this straight talking video.

I'm living in UK and sometimes struggle to understand what people saying but definitely that is not the case with you. I wish you best of luck and I hope you won't stop working on your UA-cam channel. I've been an HGV instructor for about 9 months now. I really enjoy it, you're right you don't need 30 years under your belt in order to teach, infact your people skills and how you convey things are more important than the driving.
If I was you I'd find a driving school who is willing to employ you, before you try and go it alone. Sometimes the thought of a career can be quite different to putting it into practice.
Like I said I love the job, but like anything, you won't truly know until you try it for yourself.

I will be doing my HGV lessons later this month. I've been a cleaner in a school for the last 20 years, so it should be a bit of a change. The story of your life so far sounds interesting; I wouldn't fancy being a teacher though - I work through the night in the school; they are much better when the children aren't there.
I must admit that every time a training lorry goes by, I am terrified by the size. As a test route goes past the end of my road, that is pretty often.

it's hard to find your niche in life but the things or people that knock you back drive you on. Takes courage to make changes and you're young enough to be able to try things out. I can sort of see why they reacted that way. it's a sensitive area. Teaching people is definately your vocation and the more experience and qualifications the better. you can always pull, in a bit of agency work to keep your hand in. Your dad would have been very proud of you, keep working towards your goals.

Interesting. As someone who's worked in many sectors (back in HGV again now) I know what you mean about "I have more to offer the world than this"... my advice though - make sure there are lots of jobs with decent pay in whatever you set your mind to. Teaching ticked that box, for example. TM? Maybe. Years ago I set my heart on a career that was so niche that even if I'd got fully qualified there weren't opportunities! My favourite job-phrase nowadays: "Transferable skills". Thanks for your vids btw.

    Thanks for sharing Hayley.
Some of this I can relate to on a personal level.
You birthed your channel at the right time for me as it was around that time I started out too.
Your content has not disappointed and you've been a great help in multiple ways.
My C+E training is fast approaching and I can't wait to level up and move forward within the industry.
I've also gotten hold of a TM CPC training manual to have a gander and see what it's about.
I work with drivers that also have it, and simply having the added string to their bow gives them the knowledge and awareness to challenge certain things when decisions made higher up appear not to fall in line with an expected standard or protocol. So it can be handy, even if the individual is not a TM.
I hope you continue to keep us inspired with your ambitions and preparedness to explore bigger and better opportunities within the industry.

sounds to me, like your getting your life on track, best of luck with the Manager CPC, yeah thinking it was extremely quiet on the Hayley trucking vlogs. personally think doing 2-3 hour sessions with students would be good, as most driving schools want you to do a full day of training, and as a brand new licence holder, then unless been driving class 2 as a job, it is extremely harsh hours on the road from like 7 am until 1pm. even when 2 students driving. so that would kind of give you time for starting later, and finishing earlier, maybe something you could think about if you wanted to take your career down that sort of route for family life, as be more unique, and as you know no-one has to concerntrate more than a new driver, and how tiring it can become so quickly. but yeah sounding really good so far Hayley.

I lost my dad to cancer when I was 32. My dad had just turned 65. He served in the pakistani navy for 38 years. He used to even walk faster than me and he was also a sort of Jack of all trades. He could fix motorbike fridge radio tv anything he could. I guess he learned all that as he was from the operations branch in the navy . The operations individuals deal with weapons as well as the mechanical aspects of the ship. He also served on the submarine which was given to Pakistani navy by the Americans in 1963. He was trained in new york along side with the rest of the team and after the training they sailed the submarine from America to Pakistan. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2003 and was dead within 9 months. He used to live in Pakistan and what really upsets me to this day is that he kept his diagnosis secret from me till I realized that there was something seriously wrong with him. My poor mum could not explain anything to me as she is unlettered. She can't read or write so I guess mum couldnt understand what was going on. I followed my hunch and left my job and went to see dad and stayed with him till he died. The only satisfaction I got out of that misery was that I buried him with my own hands kissing his face for the last time. But what can we say such is life and its painful at times. When I had dad around I had no money and when I had dad isnt there. I wanted to buy him things that he couldn't buy for himself thinking about us.
Since my death demise I became a health care assistant working with the elderly and I absoulutely love it. Most of the people I work with have serious health issues including cancer. I do my best for them and that's all I can do I guess. I am also a lorry driver on the side mainly driving class 2. Passed my class 1 in 2019 however havent driven one since passing my test. I do want to drive a class 1 but due to lack of experience I don't even go to agencies . I failed two class 1 assessment.

Hayley, just a thought but how about doing agency driving and teaching the cpc online. Just done mine with a husband and wife team who were fantastic and I’m sure you’d be just as good. Just a thought and very best wishes for whatever you do decide to do.

Hayley Morning. A question about the height of your trailer. Each trailer has a different height. I know who to set the height marker in my truck and in my Nav. However how do I know how high it is? I am that guy who was a teacher in Japan two years ago and started watching in Japan and came back to drive class 2 trucks. Then passed my class one last Friday. Thank you again for all the videos. They really have helped me a lot.The height on rigid is easy as it is always the same.

Hi Chris, or should I say, "that teacher guy in Japan"? 😁 Congratulations on passing your class 1 first of all. The trailers usually have the height printed on front. Unfortunately, the only other way would be to use one of those height marker sticks 😊

@@TruckDriverHayley thank you so much for that. It seems I am getting the hang of it now. Thank you for all the content. I have spent many a hour watching. Very helpful. I will keep an eye out on the road. I am in an Arnold Transport V8 scania with full light bars etc. So if you see a looney waving.... Thanks again.

Just throwing a suggestion out there but maybe agency work would suit you for now, been able to choose what kind of work you do which will give you variety, and what days times will be better for you, then when you need time off for studying/boredom take it. Also prob just one of many routes but have you seen the amazon freight partner scheme? Far as I know you can set up your own business within there network and you don't have to own any trucks which I believe you mentioned wasn't for you, maybe something of interest ?

    Interesting story.
I'm left wondering in a moment of reflection,
there was a fork in the road, and it appeared at the end of your University life,
With your degree in Micro Biology, that which you wanted to pursue, doubt, not caused by rejection by activity of application, caused you to think your not good enough,
and the financial pressure caused by an earlier decision made years before to buy a motorcycle,
encourage you to pursue what was put before you, not what was wanted, but an easy way forward, to train as a teacher, to answer the issue of how to pay for the motorcycle.
So the seeds of this future decision which was to be made at the end of your university course were sown on the day you signed on the dotted line for the purchase of the motorcycle.
Think about that for a moment - what would/ could have happened if you had not signed for that motorcycle purchase ?
After going through the teacher training and being reduced to tears by the dragon in her office, being told your not good enough and as it appears to my ears, being patronised to death to be told your a 'recoverable failure case', you determined you would become an outstanding teacher, set these wheels in motion and became just that - an outstanding teacher.
Had you got yourself into a training role in hospital, for the want of not having to pay off the motorcycle you didn't buy, is it not possible you'd have turned on the same energy to become an outstanding teacher, to have become an outstanding micro biologist ?
After three years of teaching, and having just bought your first house, [another motorcycle loan] feeling the need for a different future, all you saw was what was before you in the jobs market, HGV drivers. Taking what was presented before you [not teaching this time but HGV driving], probably encouraged by your other half, also a driver, you set about doing your Class 2, which if I remember right, you failed, found yourself in tears, [repeat of the dragon in the office] and went back, retook and passed with flying colours. Now with no previous experience you walked straight into a job which saved the day to pay for the motorcycle, opps my bad, mortgage this time.
Now three years into your driving career, for want of looking ahead, your doing your Transport Manager and trainer ADR course, [ it another teacher training course isn't it] looking to leave your driving cab for driving a classroom full of drivers.
If I were a betting man I'd suggest in three years time you'll be starting a family. That will put you around 32/ 33 years old.
I write this not to hold you under the spot light of judgement, far from it, but to shine the light on your patterns of life. To be aware of them can help crack open the opaque glass that hides our futures.
All of this path has come from the day you walked into the motorcycle showroom and bought a motorcycle by signing on the dotted line. For the want of £1,000 or what ever it was, for the final payments, the entire university course and your future as a micro biologist was sold out.
Don't worry too much about it, many of us have done it too.
There were some fleeting comments about your fathers ability to 'be there' for other people. To help them, fix things, make their life better. And you have a UA-cam channel to do the same.
His interest was Electronics, and I suspect there maybe a latent interest inside you which might be good for you to explore. This, with IT, which you touched on but never pursued, suggests getting a Raspberry Pi and electronics starter kit might kindle a latent interest, of which there is plenty of UA-cam scope and content to create.
Conspicuous by her absence is mother. That's probably the real bag of nails.
I've thanked you before and I'll do it again because you've been a 'go to source' to help me in my still fledgling driving career. Yes I've been that clueless that your video on how to open a curtain sider was helpful to me. Can I stand up in the classroom and say that ??? The obvious is not obvious until you know.
I did the ADR 'light' online course which I was told would take me about half an hour. HA! Three hours later I was wondering if it was ever going to finish. It does make sense in the end, which is what your saying in here. The funny thing is to me as an ex computer man, [25 years] the book is a paper based version of a database. Once I got that in my head, it all begins to fall into place concerning its layout and heirachy of dangerous goods.
    Kindest regards
    Alex

Hayley I really like your channel but the amount of jobs you are going through is ridiculous. My opinion means nothing but maybe you should take some time out and evaluate what you want to do. You don't seem happy in any job.
