I love this pedal and did get a copy just because the Wampler Belle had a couple features I liked such as a bass control and a button that changes the way it clips. Really the best overdrive pedal I have ever tried.
@JosePineda-jn8jk Some time I want to get the Wampler Belle. I got a slightly newer version of the Nobel’s than seen here in Zac’s video but it was made before they added the bass cut switch. Great one of a kind pedal.
JOSH! ...he has the box😎... LOL Hey Zac, I love the education and fun man. Thanks for sharing your experience and insight. It truly helps. I play Tele thru a Deluxe Reverb and just put the Nobels in my cart as I just learned of it! How did I miss that?! LOL Shaaaaame... Just found your video and JACKPOT!! Yep, I've been using my ODR-1 for about five years now, since just before moving to Nashville. I bought it during my pre-Nashville "studying up" phase. Nothing can substitute for actually hanging here though! So much tone progress since then, but the ODR-1 is still in heavy use.

Love the ODR. I'm a working musician - but also an audio engineer. I've done live FOH work, for many bands. I'm always listening to tone of all the instruments and I geek out on guitarist's pedalboard. I often find the ODR-1, in the chain. I'm currently modding my Biyang X-Drive to emulate it. I know I could buy one; and prob will. For now, modding is fun
Tomas, I've bought and sold various OD pedals, and one factor that sees me putting them on ebay is background noise or hiss, but this is rarely mentioned in youtube videos. I don't like noise gates, as I think the noise shouldn't be there in the first place. With your audio engineering and FOH experience, how do you find the ODR-1 in this respect?
I learned about the Nobel’s ODR from Guthrie Trapp. That conversation changed my tone. The Nobel’s is my always on pedal! Love them! Great story Zac, keep them vids comin!!!
I bought one about 6 weeks ago. Spent a day with it. I wasn't happy with any sound I could produce with it along with my Music Man Cutlass through a new Peavey Bandit 112 amp. I returned it the following day. I settled on 3 pedals for my lead sounds. I use a Boss GE-7 EQ Pedal, a Boss Blues Driver BD-2, and an Ibanez TS808 Reissue Tube Screamer, connected in that order on my pedalboard. Depending on the song, I use one, two, or all three pedals stacked to achieve great tones from clean country picking to overdriven rock sounds. I also have a Keeley Compressor+ after the TS808 set for a relatively low compression to tame peaks and improve sustain while preserving pick attack. This combination works very well for my taste and touch and makes playing so much more inspiring and enjoyable. On the downside though, a pedalboard can be an expensive performance tool. But I must admit that mine has added more to my musical experience than I thought it possibly could going in.
FYI. The designer of the ODR-1, Kai Tachibana, started his own company, also in Hamburg, called Nordland and he is offering the ODR-C and ODR CC(+), his contemporary look on his original ODR-1 designs. As I never played an original ODR-1 I cannot vouch for an similar or improved sound, but the extra controls and the more consistent components definitely suggest a more usable pedal. The CC+ that I got instantly became my main overdrive. Extra controls are a pre-drive bass control (for all non-tele players) plus an 'overdrive decompress' control and (in the +) a very usefull extra mid EQ control. In a certain setting of the extra controls it is supposed to sound and respond like an original ODR-1. TPS Dan was very impressed and also Tom is seen comparing it shortly to the th ODR-1 in his guitar-giveaway video.
It's always nice to here the stories that starts with pedal that someone swears is the next best thing . In this case they were right on.I saw Tim Pierce has one on his pedalboard, and uses it regularly, because he earned it.Hahaha.👍🎸😎
I see your Mac McAnally poster in the background. I’m Mac’s FOH engineer and mixed that show. Just thought it was cool to see you with that poster! Hahaha. That was a great show.
You did a great job, and that was a killer show. My dad took me to that show. One of the last shows we went to before he passed on to the next life. Thanks for making it a great one.
I have a G Trapp original over drive. It's an ODR-1 clone and the last pedal I would get rid of. From Zep to Johnson to Blues/Country. About the only thing it doesn't do well is metal tones. Love it.
Zac I hope you get to try the Nordland ODR-C. It’s a new pedal made by the original ODR-1 circuit designer, Kai T. I’ve had one for a couple weeks and love it. I’ve used the Nobel’s ODR-1 for over 20 years. That’s been a mainstay on my board. I never had complaints with it. The Nordland has ability to trim the bass, a compression cut and also a mids knob. It’s really the ultimate ODR-1. Really great unit. I like the Danocaster. Sounds great man. I love the Julian Lage neck pickup.
So about 6 years ago i walked into a shop and saw a nobels odr1 i didnt really know what it was but i thought it looked cool so i asked the guy how much he said $50 so i bought it, i thought it was ok, but never really got along with it, was doing some more research and it was an original from the 90s and it was mint, fast forward about 2 years it was going for about $200 to $300 so i sold it in a trade😞now they're going for about$2000 wow, but now have a silver nobels dt1 distortion and love it it sounds like the vintage odr1 but has a little more gain on tap!!!
The ODR1 works best with clean, bright amps. That’s why Wampler created the “Belle”. It’s more versatile. It will do the Nobels thing with the bass turned all the way up but you can use it with a warmer amp too.
It kind of reminds me of how Jim Campilongo cranks his Princeton Reverb with the volume and the bass at "10" and he rides his guitar's volume and tone knobs. In other words, the ODR-1 sounds damn fine.
I just picked up a used ODR-1 (with bass cut) for $70. The pedal sounds incredible. With my Strat, Tele, R9 or 335 through my '66 Deluxe Reverb, it has a beautiful sound with each guitar. I have no interest in comparing my $70 ODR-1 with any ODR's from any era. I don't see the need to go down a rabbit hole splitting hairs and sniffing corks. I know there are a ton of Nobels clones out there and that's cool.....if somebody wants to spend $1,000 buying 3-4 of them (or fewer) to compare, who am I to tell you not to do that? I'd rather spend my time playing and enjoying myself. This is some of the best $70 I've ever spent.
Thanks for the video Zac! I picked up a vintage ODR-1 off reverb a couple months ago, and didn’t figure out until now that I’ve watched this video that they are inconsistent. My ODR got so much mids and headroom, I’m getting a bit of gain only I’m cracking the drive knob and way too much mids.
A lot of that variance specifically considering gain is the potentiometer that's used. I've heard that often they're reversed (Gain and Volume pots). That said they all do have a wide range of tolerances which make them all sound different.
I've become convinced over the very short time that Tom's been doing his Home Skoolin' show that he is without question the best guitarist on the planet. I just... can't even really begin to describe how enamored I have become with that guy's playing. and he seems cool as hell too. not to mention I've gotten shit about drinking Rolling Rock for years but Tom gives me the confidence to just keep on Rollin'!
You need to try the ehx "overlord nano." JFET o.d. with bass, mid, treble eq. Extremely natural sound. Especially paired with a blackface amp. I have a nobles, blues driver ect.ect. Never really thought of ehx making great overdrives. But this overlord nano is an always on pedal that I run through my 66 Pro Reverb. I couldn't be happier with it. Plus it's very affordable.
It's a good pedal. I did an album session in my home studio in the 90s and Tom Britt had one. I bought it based off of that and had it a few years. It was defintely the "it" pedal in Nashville for a few years. Then after that it was The Timmy... then others took it's place. 'Tis the nature of guitar pedal fascination.
@@AskZac for sure! I also saw Tom's response video just now talking about Mike E's Guitar Ranch. Remember them, too! I grew up in Lavergne - which isn't known for much all that great (right?) - so it's cool to know Mike E's place in this whole story. You mentioned Brad Paisley. I think he used to go to Mike E's too - definitely remember first playing a Dr Z there. I've always wondered if Mike was the one who got him in on the Dr Z thing? I was just a kid in the 90s growing up there but I remember it being a great place to hang out - and just knowing, these guys are like serious about guitar tone (without respect to price or myth!). I bought an old Gretsch amp from Mike with a 1x15 that was like $350 but it I got so many compliments on the sound of that amp and also bought a Dano '56 u2 reissue because of him. Fun memories
I know others have put together sometimes exhaustive demos, but if you have a chance, would love to hear a couple of your go to settings for the ODR-1, always looking for inspiration
I put velcro on my nobles od1. After a few months I removed the velcro and now there is sticky goop on the bottom of the pedal. I can't clean it off. Never had a problem with velcro removal before? Great pedal but it bugs me ha!
Question - I play in a full time country band. I use an ODR1 and an RC Booster and a Keeley mod BD2 - all amazing sounding pedals, BUT - I CAN’T STAND compressors!!!! I keep trying and trying, but I hate them…… do you think it is possible to be a country guitarist without a comp pedal???
Have you tried the new green ODR-1? I bought one after hearing about them from Jim Lill. Love the pedal, but haven't heard them side by side with an original ODR-1
"Gibson guy in a Tele town." I'm almost 61 and remember a time during the late 70's to early 80's when about half the guys in Nashville were playing Les Paul's and 335's. For some odd reason, a cheap Gibson knockoff brand--Hohner--really made the rounds. Literally, about every other country show on TV had some guy on it playing a Hohner Les Paul copy. I've always wondered what the deal was with those. Maybe Hohner gave them away to a lot of Nashville players to boost the brand or something. I never owned one but played a few back in the day. For a cheap bolt-on neck copy, they seemed very nice actually. Anybody know what the Nashville connection was with those?
You are right. Companies would routinely giveaway guitars to try and get exposure in TV. In the 80’s and 90’s Fenders were everywhere. Hence the title of my interview with Tom.
Hi Zac, can I ask, why are you using the second vibrato channel on that Deluxe Reverb? Personally, I always find the dB pad muffles the amp a little. I guess you don't? cheers
You are great Zac! There are numerous video reviews of pedals on UA-cam. Your reviews are different because of who you are and your background. You may or may not want to in the future do a review of your choice of pedals under $100. I have bought some pedals in the $30 to$50 range and have had bad luck with them. Most guitar players don't have $300+ for pedals. Just a suggestion. Love what your are doing! Thanxz
Doing a throw back after your latest video on fuzz today. Thanks for sharing as always! I have a carbon copy analog delay that I really dig but I find the regeneration knob too touchy. What do you recommend for a nice affordable (but not necessarily cheap) delay with modulation ?
You mentioned the pickups used in your guitar they sound good. Can you get the same results with classic vibe telecaster from Fender? PS. I have a early 70's Deluxe Reverb silver face.
@@AskZac Seriously it's becoming the 'elephant in the room'. He MUST appear at some point surely? I love your content but that would be the cherry on the top, however I'm sure he's a busy man!
I love the King Tone Soloist. But it has more of a Stevie Ray sound ... My partnership and I are trying to get some songs into Nashville for somebody to listen to! Trying Dann Huff first, but have not had much success yet ... any pointers?
Hey Zac,what are the common settings used (if there are any)? I have the silver one, I suppose now I have to buy a few more to make sure it's a good one!
Speaking of Hellcasters and modifications, Jerry Donahue let me play his first Fender signature tele right after it came out back in the 80's. You might recall it had a strat pickup in front, but they did some stuff with the wiring and a 5-way switch that made it sound just like a strat in the 2 position. I thought he was pulling my leg and had a strat pickup in the middle hidden under the pick-guard (like a stealth tele), but he told me it was done by placing a cap inside one (or maybe both) of the pickup windings. I think, however, that the JD models Fender sold did things differently and didn't have a cap wound inside a pickup. I've never played any of the store models, just Jerry's, so I'm not sure if they sound close or not. But his sounded bang-on like a strat. One of the greatest Fender guitar mods ever in my opinion.
@@wildbillhackett I actually had one of the Fender custom shop models, and if I remember correctly, it did have unique wiring. It was quite a while ago, so I'm not 100% sure on that. Sounded great and played great though! That much I remember!
Another great feature, Zac! I bought my ODR-1 in 1996 or '97. I paid $36 for it, and NOBODY knew about them or liked them at the time. I learned about the pedal from an internet guitar forum. A guy whose opinions I respected just raved about the thing, claiming it was the most *transparent* overdrive pedal on earth! So bought one and paired it with a '72 Deluxe Reverb for countless recordings and gigs over the years. I've had to repair it once about 8 years ago (a resistor was bad, iirc), and today it's still kicking along just fine. Hey Zac, do you have your DR mic'ed , perhaps in the back? Or does your camera mic pick up that much bass on its own?? Thank you!
@@physiciansassist1 the SD9 is another great pedal. As far as the Nobels, as I said in the video, the old ones vary quite a bit. I have not done a head to head comparison, but the reissues sound like they should, like a Nobels.
Great video Zac! Always a pleasure to hear your stories. I have a Truetone VS-XO. Is it true that the overdrive on the left side is a modified ODR-1 with a treble and bass knob?
@@AskZac ok now I get it. I bought a black truetone vs xo at a musicians swap meet.i had never heard of one. I got it home and It made the main pedal I had been using sound like a transistor radio . It's been my only distortion pedal since. I now have a milk crate of old pedals I need to sell. I felt lucky after 45 years of playing to find the truetone
Another great video Zac. I had always heard about the inconsistency of the ODR-1 and was wondering your thoughts on the ODR mini pedals. I tried one and really like it, but like a idiot I didn't buy it right then. When I went back it was gone. I was thinking about ordering one off the internet but are the new ones as inconsistent as the earlier pedals? Thanks for doing these videos, they're perfect to watch during a lunch break
Hey ZAC DOES the Nobels ODR-1 LTD DO ANYTHING BETTER OR DIFFERENT THAN THE ODR-1 OR IS IT JUST COSMETIC/ MEANING THE PAINT IS A LITTLE DARKER & has actual metal flake in the paint for Sparkle, they both have the cut switch . So I would like to know what I’m paying for sparkling paint or paint & a MODIFICATION TO THE DEVICE ???. Thanks Zac !!!.
I saw an ODR-S on Facebook Marketplace just a few miles from me priced at $50, so I bought it. Now EVERYBODY who hears it wants to buy it from me. One guy pulled out 5 $100 bills but i declined.
Hi Zac! I got my 1959 "Reissue" Tele over the weekend and It's awesome! I was just wondering what the name of the Song that the riff came from at the end of this video you played? I think it's from an old Lenoard Skinnard Album? The reason I ask is I want to learn it .. Anyway. Your Content always "ROCKS".. I love watching your Videos! : ) Please have a great day and Happy 2022 too!
Hi Zac! Just wondering if the Visual Sound Open Road is somewhat of a clone of the Nobels ODR-1? Just a rumour I’d heard that would explain the Open Road’ success with the Nashville crowd. Sorry for the late question lol, just getting into your videos. Love them, keep’em coming! Thank you
@@AskZac awesome! Thanks so much for the response! It’s my “home base” pedal lol. Every time I think I’ve found something better I go back to the Open Road after a few weeks! I would love if Truetone reissued it, or better yet built a triple pedal that has their Route 808 going stackable into the Open Road with a clean boost on the end for solos. I’d buy one as it basically is what I’m running now, and this way I wouldn’t have to go back to my old trusty Open Road! Lol thanks again Zac
Looking at the circuit diagram of the ODR-1 (at least one of its incarnations, from Dec 2000), it "borrows" from a number of designs like the Rat, Tube Screamer, DOD250, and some of the other DOD drive pedals. The Proco Rat uses a pair of parallel networks to provide two different drive amounts from the same stage. One is drive for the entire spectrum (max gain = 169x), and the other is additional drive for content above roughly 2400hz (max gain = 305x). So there is a kind of preboost for upper mids and treble, prior to clipping. The gain for the upper ids and treble is much less than what a Rat provides, but more than a Tube Screamer. Unlike the Rat, but just like the Tube Screamer, it uses diodes in the feedback path of that gain stage, for a bit of compression and what some call (but which isn't) "soft clipping". Like the TS, it also rolls off a little more top end as gain is increased, though not really all that much. And again, just like the Tube Screamer, there is some lowpass filtering immediately after the clipping stage to smooth out some of the additional harmonic content generated. This is followed by a second set of clipping diodes, though they don't appear to do much. The "Spectrum" control follows and is essentially a resonant boost/cut, rather than the reciprocal treble/bass emphasis found on the TS-9 and SD-1. This leaves low end intact. Finally, this is followed by a tone-shaping stage that provides a smidgen of low-end roll-off and more high-end roll-off, to provide a smoother sound. It is a more "involved" circuit than either the TS-9 or any of its many copycats and derivatives (e.g., Timmy, Zendrive, Fulldrive, et al.). Of course, now I want to see/hear the ODR-1 go head to head with the Ibanez MT10 Mostortion, another "secret weapon" among Nashville hotshots.
@@AskZac My pleasure, Zac. Looking forward to it. We actually met briefly in 2009. RG arranged for Bob Weil to take me out to lunch and Bob gave me a tour of the place, where I was introduced to you, Dana, Bob's mom and his brother. Regular reader of the VG column.

Depends on the amp and the guitar.
A warmer sounding amp will make the ODR1 sound muddy to some people.

Thanks for the kind words. I will have to check out the Nordland!!
I too, just purchased the Nordland.... 'VERY HAPPY!
Epic! Now it's time for a Truetone deep dive on Buk. I know he doesn't do many interviews, but I was excited Premier Guitar got him. There's hope :)
Let's see what happens.
Waiting on my ODR-1 to show up. Thanks for the insight into this pedal.
Zac thanks for introducing me to you, and so many like minded guitarists. just lettin' ya know brother. it's good help.
Cool, thanks!
Good stuff Zac thanks stay safe out there.....
You too
Just ordered the mini version.
What Mike said.
@@mikemcgraw2101 In the "old" days the Korean does a lot of strange things......
Pots often got switched at the factory. Barry at Xact Tone Solutions can straighten it out.
From the keyboard of Jerry Mac!!!!
I am glad he is doing the show too. He is one of the important Nashville Session Cats
I like Zac, Zac rocks
Props for Highlander Boogie, haven’t heard that in forever.
Brian Wampler’s take on this is great, with a bass roll off knob.
Glad I could be # 100 like! Love ya dude. great video
Thank you, Blake.
@@AskZac Yes my friend!
Great sound, greetings from Croatia!!
Thank you very much!
The Nobles has such a great sound.
You need to try the ehx "overlord nano."
JFET o.d. with bass, mid, treble eq.
Tom Bukovac also has one on his pedalboard.
Hi, What's your opinion on the Nobels ODR1 Mini mod XTS ?
The mod tames the bass some, which is good for guys that tend to use humbuckers.
Different strokes for different folks. This thing just does something to the low end that I can't dial out.
I have the mini and love it. Would really like an original.
just bought the BC version, for price its a bargain! I also recommend Simble,DUDE, MI Audio Super Blues Pro, MI aud Cross Over, Mojo Hand fx DMBL.....
There are many good copies
It's a good pedal. I did an album session in my home studio in the 90s and Tom Britt had one. I bought it based off of that and had it a few years. It was defintely the "it" pedal in Nashville for a few years. Then after that it was The Timmy... then others took it's place. 'Tis the nature of guitar pedal fascination.
🎶He has the box...🎶
Oh wow 🤣 somebody else is a JHS fan! 👍 I posted the same thing just now. Exactly. Music notes & all! 😆
I remember Guitar Heaven! :) What a great place - and this is a great video - thanks !
You are so welcome. Miss that shop.
Yes, that is where Brad first played a Dr Z amp
That was a fantastic guy who ran that place. He was so understanding to beginners like me.
Just got the Wampler version (Belle) and really like it a lot.. BTW, loved the Hellecasters reference at the end! ;)
So good!
I know others have put together sometimes exhaustive demos, but if you have a chance, would love to hear a couple of your go to settings for the ODR-1, always looking for inspiration
I like the drive around 10-11 o'clock, the spectrum at 2-3 o'clock, and the level to match the bypassed output.
@@AskZac that’s exactly the settings I use. This pedal with a Telecaster is awesome!
Love the odr1 its my always on. It great drive pedal, great to stack on
Nice pedal! Adds just a little edge!
Yes. Does it well
I put velcro on my nobles od1. After a few months I removed the velcro and now there is sticky goop on the bottom of the pedal. I can't clean it off. Never had a problem with velcro removal before? Great pedal but it bugs me ha!
Have you tried Goo Gone?
@@AskZac I will try it. Thanks😀
Question - I play in a full time country band. I use an ODR1 and an RC Booster and a Keeley mod BD2 - all amazing sounding pedals, BUT - I CAN’T STAND compressors!!!! I keep trying and trying, but I hate them…… do you think it is possible to be a country guitarist without a comp pedal???
absolutely. Don't use one if you don't like it
Have you tried the new green ODR-1? I bought one after hearing about them from Jim Lill. Love the pedal, but haven't heard them side by side with an original ODR-1
I have, and it is great. Sounds like a Nobels! I have not compared it directly with my old green one.
@@AskZac Thanks Zac.
hohners gave them boners (country style) (nashville rashville)
Hi Zac, can I ask, why are you using the second vibrato channel on that Deluxe Reverb? Personally, I always find the dB pad muffles the amp a little. I guess you don't? cheers
I usually use the first input. Must have been an oversight
Interested in how often you use input two? I’ve not noticed that before.
Great episode! I'm a fan of this pedal too. I've got a few and they definitely sound different between them.
Thanks Johnny!
How do you feel about the other, other green pedal? The Mostortion.
I personally like it better. I will do a Mostortion video at some point.
Session guitarist, Tim Pierce, swears by them!
YEP
Do you always plug into the 2nd input on the vibrato channel at low volumes? Whats different with the two inputs? Thanks!
I usually plug into the first input on the vibrato side. Must have been a fluke
Great, greeeaaaaat video! Thanks for sharing it!2
You are welcome!
Great video
Thank you!
Thanxz
I appreciate that!
Doing a throw back after your latest video on fuzz today. Thanks for sharing as always!
I have a carbon copy analog delay that I really dig but I find the regeneration knob too touchy.
What do you recommend for a nice affordable (but not necessarily cheap) delay with modulation ?
The old Line 6 Echo Park is great, and around $120. Or pony up for the Strymon Brigadier $300

Hey Zac,what are the common settings used (if there are any)? I have the silver one, I suppose now I have to buy a few more to make sure it's a good one!
Drive up about half way, spectrum up high, like 3 o clock.
I like the Hellecasters / Jorgenson nod! :)
Love them
Speaking of Hellcasters and modifications, Jerry Donahue let me play his first Fender signature tele right after it came out back in the 80's.
@@wildbillhackett By the way, that's VERY cool that you got to play Jerry's guitar!!!
@@wildbillhackett It was a great model. Agreed.
Thank you!
Did JD simo play the slide intro on the trutone lounge?
Al Perkins played the original lounge slide part on a lap steel
Great Vid! Do you have the tab for the intro you played on this vid?
No, but this clip breaks it down ua-cam.com/video/IMcztzVmLLE/v-deo.html

I like the reissues. They sound great too
@@AskZac in your opinion how do they differ? Im using a maxon sd9 and it has killer tone but I need something a little more tame to run before it.
@@physiciansassist1 the SD9 is another great pedal. As far as the Nobels, as I said in the video, the old ones vary quite a bit. I have not done a head to head comparison, but the reissues sound like they should, like a Nobels.
I remember guitar guitar Heaven on Bell road.
Great video Zac! Always a pleasure to hear your stories. I have a Truetone VS-XO. Is it true that the overdrive on the left side is a modified ODR-1 with a treble and bass knob?
That is correct
@@AskZac ok now I get it. I bought a black truetone vs xo at a musicians swap meet.i had never heard of one. I got it home and It made the main pedal I had been using sound like a transistor radio .
Honored by your thorough response, Mark. I will absolutely do a shootout between the 2 pedals soon.
