Homeskoolin’ Saturday Pedal Shootout For Nobels Lovers

- Hello lads and lasses…the kind folks at Nobels were kind enough to send me a 30th anniversary ODR-1 Overdrive pedal to try out, so I thought I would give it a swing.
Tell me what you think.
I realize this subject matter has been perhaps flogged on a bit too much in the past, but I still get a million questions regarding ODR-1s, so there must still be people wondering...so here we are,
The sweet lads at Nobels asked me for a short quote so I will say this:
“I am extremely proud to be a long time card carrying member of the Nobels family, the finest overdrive pedals ever made”
Not to speak for the masses, but I seriously doubt anyone who follows your channel feels overwhelmed by your vids...keep em coming Unc! Awesome as usual!
@Skyecracker, you said it better than I could. If Tom put out 5 vids a day, I'd watch. He always imparts a positive vibe, a dose of knowledge, and stuff that makes me think. I never met Tom, but I feel like I've known him since we were youngins. To say I have mad respect for him is an understatement. He's the real deal holyfield and brings us outsiders into the heart of the pro end of the music business. For me, it's fascinating. I'm not a brown noser in any way. If I didn't like and appreciate Tom's uploads, I simply wouldn't watch. Cheers Larry, and thanks for starting homeskool my brother.
Agreed. I can’t watch all the videos as they happen, but I want them all to be there when I am ready. This is going to be looked back on as an absolute textbook for guitarists. Wish this had existed when I was 15.
😂😂😂 I however am overwhelmed. I found his channel when he was about 2 years deep... I can't fucking catch up...😂😂😂
Speak for the masses. You ain’t lying.
@@frankelias1952 Frank, that's the true beauty of a channel like Tom's. You can watch at your own pace. I go back and re watch a bunch of his uploads over and over. The knowledge bombs he drops are subtle and so good.
Dear Tom, we did listen to comments (especially from You) when creating our golden "NewBalls" ODR-1 and we are very happy that the 30th Anniversary could please your ears. Yes, my retail "No1 Music Center" had been next street to Star Club and Kaiserkeller and Indra in Hamburg (where the Beatles started their career in 1960). All the best. Bernhard - Nobels Originator
Love the new 30th anniversary version Bernhard. Well done. This shootout is proof for anyone that this new version holds its own amongst all the 90s originals (and the Vemuram Shanks too). Well done 👍
Dude…the 30th Gold keeps up! $160 is much better than $2k 😂
The more I’m hearing Tom’s older Nobels the more I’m hearing what he is saying about the newer models and other gain boxes sounding more like pedals whereas the older Nobels sound more like an amp/ amp channel.
There is a natural blending ability that they seem to have.
I do like how the 30th anniversary and think it does a good job in holding its own against the older Nobels. I also like the 30th anniversary’s ability to fine tune the bass versus a preset cut switch.
ahhhh goldies killin the NEW greenie imho..The 30th aniversary snds more like ORIGINAL one clearer in mids n bass
Thank you very much
No such thing as over posting for Home Skoolers.
All the content you’ve been making has been awesome. I wish you could post this much everyday but we all know you have a busy life.
Thank you bro
The only thing that would have been better when you were at Gruhn's was if we heard from you and Vince More
Oh by the way this is just my opinion and I'm not complaining and Mr gruhn is a legend. But listening to him was like listening to the middle part of a Def Leppard song
You can never post too much stuff. I’m always searching for your latest videos. Love this stuff man. Keep em coming.
You can never overpost Uncle Larry
Never too much!! Keep it coming!!
Keep the content coming! I’ve now watched all three and am a happy man. ❤
Keep the Videos coming, I'll watch all day.
Never too many Uncle Larry videos, keep 'em coming man
Great stuff as always.
Sounds really good!
Never too many videos. Always a pleasure grasping knowledge from the Professor Uncle Larry.
good stuff all. makes my heart glad. keep on truckin.
Thanks for the burst shots! Pretty dramatic.
As always, thanks for your time and wisdom!
Love the fadeout shot!
I'm perfectly whelmed by all the videos!
I haven't even watched this yet and already I know it's going to be a good time. Always love Larry's take on gear.
The video I’ve been waiting on! Thanks for the comparison, think I’ll be grabbing one as soon as I can find one!!
It is incredible how differently each of the Nobles sound, even with the same settings.... THANKS BUK!!!
I love your humility and all the vids. Can't post too many for us!
Enjoyed the hell out of the video!!!
Also liked the video with Otis Gibbs !!
Always look forward to what your into or testing or just sitting there playing love that you share your time and talent
If it sounds good on a phone speaker it will sound incredible in the flesh.
There can never be enough Larry videos.
Thank you.🎉
Getting crazy on a Saturday night bathed in the kitchen neon glow. There's never too many posts Larry ! These recent clips have been great. Thank you so much Uncle L ! Wishing you all the best on your wagers tomorrow ! With Gratitude - John
Your fingers and swing makes them all sound great !!!
Nobels ODR-1 +1 works by itself and plays really well with others. Tanks Unca Larry for the cool videos across the spectrum
I just picked up the Nobels mini and man I love that little pedal! I've never tried the big ones.
Don't apologize for uploading! We love all the videos!... almost as much as we love that propped up card of the Juice 😎
Keepin the faith of " it's Saturday and lets get a little crazy", I listened on my tiny little phone speaker. I like to live a little. So yeah, I can't hear any difference. But you, the pedals, amp and the beater old guitar sound real good. And the comedy lately has been on par. Happy Holidays Tom.
What a nice Les Paul!!! I just bought the green Nobels a couple of weeks back, great pedal!
Since before C19 and after... there has not been a second where I thought... 'too many videos'... watched every second. Keep'em coming Uncle Larry
fantastic matey keep them coming :)
Never enough vids from you. You’re always what I look for first on UA-cam.
I though the one on the floor sounded best.
all the nobels pedals sounded great through my old ears. the video description summed it up well. HOMESKOOLIN!
Keep them coming!
Thank the Lord for distortion.🤘
Keep them coming Uncle Larry!
Never too much posting 😊
Sweet sweet guitar tones.
I think the floor Nobels retains more of the natural guitar sound. It enhances the guitar, and it is really even sounding for sure. The old on the table is really close to that too. I'm not sure if you pushed the one on the floor more but it was bad ass for sure!!! I really appreciate ALL the videos and time and effort you put into this. I look forward to EVERYONE!!! You really are
an awesome heartfelt person. Thanks again!!!!
Always enjoy Hearing from you. You're always welcome to drop by from cyberspace. Thanks again for taking the time to share your wit and wisdom.
both sound great the same I like the bass cut option on the anniversary!
That’s melody at 3:05 is the shit I’m here for. Makes me want to hunt out more Melodie’s myself. I just bought the 30th anniversary one but yours in the floor is fucking wicked!
Thanks uncle Larry!
I pick up a Nobels Limited Edition last year when they built 2000 of a special run which has the bass cut on - off switch (no pot) inside the battery compartment in special green color... all because of you! It does sound great!
Great old picture of the burst! I really like the new Nobles, sounds serviceable to me.
We can never get enough Uncle Larry, don't ever feel bad for posting a ton!
I like the one that rolls off the bass. Uncle Larry, the 501chorusecho channel is a treasure chest of how you have transformed the guitar on many levels. I speak for the singer songwriter subscribers who have learned so much from you. We'll never be shredders but you've made us better. Have a good evening.
The ODR-1 is such a great design.
Loving the recent shower of videos, Larry! Keep the tap running!
Glad we got to see the mailbox letter pics!
All the pedals, including the Big Jam, sound the same to me.
The old ODR-1 on the desk and the new gold one are both great, but yeah they are different. The old one on your desk seems a tiny bit warmer (I mean slightly!). The new gold one seems to be a bit more punchy, slightly more definition to the notes. I have a 90's original and a mini, the new gold one is definitely on my list. The variable BC is sweet.
One more thing… I remember being 16, getting high and putting Close To The Edge on my parents console record player and zoning out. Good times and good days. It’s wonderful how music has the power to bring us back to certain moments in our lives.
Your pal in Boston, Darin
Hi Unk Today;s party at George's was gold. Vince is a crackup. The rapid fire bits of guitar lore was vast and appreciated. It was like taking a PhD in Guitar history and construction. I felt immediately smarter. Imagine if you could download George's brain. He's a national treasure.
Keep the videos coming. Gives something for me to binge if I can’t keep up. I couldn’t hear the difference, maybe need to be in the room. And those scammers reached out to me, but I figured it out quickly.
Finally, some pedals for old dudes! LOL! I think I would take any of the pedals in this video and have a lot of fun.
This is fun stuff Tom, we do love it! Interesting, the "hidden" Nobels has a different mid grind.
Only one I have of these is the Shanks ODS, it has a nice clarity with similar characteristics I think
I enjoy them, Thanks!
Love the Gruhn's video earlier! I like both of the Nobels pedals, but they are different, and the one on your mystery board sounded best.
Dear Tom, your Gruhn video awakes good old memories. We bought from George Gruhn in the 70s, created guitar models with him in the 80s (Hohner Professional) and hosted him at his first visit to Germany at Frankfurt Musik Messe. George showed up (in the well-heated hall) at our No1-booth in a thick lumberjack coat, a "cact-tie" and rabbit fur shoes "they told me it is cold in Germany". Great explanation from Jeff how The Unions work. Waiting for more of your great videos. Thank you. Bernhard - Nobels Originator
Thank you Bernhard for giving the world such an amazing pedal. We appreciate it greatly 🙏💚
amen
Awesome. Nice riff at 3:05….sounds like 2 guitars tracking. Sweet.
Thank you so much for the comparison! To my ears, both older ones had a certain amount of "mellow wooliness" whereas the new one had a crispier edge. Granted, this is with youtube compression, iPhone mic, and my playback set. Thanks again, Tom!!
Larry's a sweetheart. Never to many vid9s from my favorite uncle !!
Just bought the 30th, partially due to this video so thank you Tom ❤
I always have time to watch your videos Tom!
The old No Balls on the floor had some teeth. It had a little moe snarl!!! I think they all sounded great!
I just my 30th anniversary Nobels yesterday and it’s awesome! I’m running everything at noon including the bass knob. I tried it also with the bass knob full on and it is not my preference, but with the bass at 12:00 it sounds sweet. 😊
Dude, you could post 20 times a day and I wouldn't be mad at ya! Thanks for all the awesome content duder!
Awesome Tom buddy 3 vids today is perfect & as you know I have a soft spot for pedals 😊 .. soft spot for Nobels too & as well our mutual friend Robert's new pedal ... the burst looked fantastic ... but it still does with all the miles on now ! best BV 🙂
man the one on the floor sounds wicked...fully organic and pure amp like..the two on the desk sound great too...out of those, i might give it to the anniversary model.
Hi Tom the green pedal sounds a hair more compressed, which I sort of prefer, but hay both are really awesome, high dollar love in a little creamier box , stay steady unc!!!
New to your channel Tom, heard 1 minute of your commentary and playing, then subscribed. Love it! By the way, I thought all sounded more lively than the Vemuram much to my chagrin. 😳
✌🏾&💜
-Seal (artist known as).
I love the video's! That first riff was gold! And about the Noballs' 😂 i think there not enough of a difference to matter. The bass cut is useful
I like the nobels on the mystery board the best👌
Tom, there’s a lot of things I love about your playing, but I especially love your vibrato. The 30th anniversary Nobels sounds great! It sounds very similar to the old one on the left, but the original on the floor has more clarity through my cheap ass iPhone speaker.
Ah thanks for sharing those photos!
Really like the new one. I think it and the mystery board one sounded the closest.
I like the way both of the old ones do their thing but everything stays clear and you can hear all the detail. The new one kind of puts a layer of fog in there.
That Shanks sounds good!
Whenever Uncle Larry says “mystery board“ there needs to be a science-fiction sound effect.
Wonderful Uncle Larry, like so many, we will take all the sharing you are willing to offer. To my ears, the original No-Balls have a bigger, rounder sound. A couple of years ago i bought one of the new ones. While i am sure it is not the same as the original, nevertheless, like you have said, it feels and sounds more like an overdriven amp than just a pedal. Its my go to OD. Thanks for this comparison.
I think the Gold 30th anniversary sounds just as great as the other two. Nobels also confirmed on their instagram that the 30th anniversary gold one is the 1993 circuit - not the newer circuit. So it's the real deal, and hearing it back to back sounds great to me.
The iPhone is just fine. It’s one of the unique features of your show Tom. Talking music, guitars and gear etc is my cuppa tea.
Love the Nobels pedal!
It’s cool to hear iPhone videos for more realistic portrayals of tone instead of all the DAW polished mixes! 😉✌🏻
I really like all of them to be honest. The old one underneath sounded like it had a little less bass. The new one sounded great to me. I have a Nordland CC+ mini that also sounds really good. I have no clue if it sounds like an original as I have never heard one, but I like it.
Oh BTW, a while back our Uncle Larry demonstrated a few more drive pedals, and seemed to give high praise to the Greer Lightspeed...That thing kills! A couple of my friends were also impressed. We all bought two
Keep’em coming! Guitars, cooking, kids, friends, Gruhns, - it’s all good.
i wouldnt mind to hear these against the Keeley either! My gold one just came in and i absolutely love it. Big Lightspeed fan too thanks to Uncle Larry. Big Uncle Larry fan as well.
Over posting, come on dude! Nobody is forcing us lol. Love it.
Don't worry about too many videos, it's all gold!
The new one sounds like a tad of harmonizer on the low end. Probably my imagination. Less mid bite than the other ones. I’m down the rabbit hole. Great licks!🍺
The harmonizer might be Uncle Larry’s thumb. Nice!
I like the way you can cut the bass.. could definitely be cool for studio stuff.
New one sounds great but I just bought a Citadel. Love what dies into my Fenders. Be interesting to compare.
Nobels on the floor🔥 but I also like the Bass Cut on the new one. It makes the mids cut Better through in the mix
The old green noballs on your desk is king imo. The new one isn’t bad, but doesn’t really seem to hold up to either of your old ones. Just not as lively and more 2d sounding. Great videos Uncle Larry!
You are not over posting! I don't mind speaking for others when I say we love it!
Damn i love this channel.
