Warning - contains strong language.
My favorite band Wishbone Ash. Them and YES. Martin's band has the Classic Wishbone Ash sound and feel. Andy's band is a hard gigging Wishbone Ash cover band. They are a good band, but their sound lacks Martins voice and bass playing and presence. Love Martin's band.
Andy's band makes new music
I wouldn't agree that Andy's band is a 'cover band' considering that he alone kept the W.A legacy burning (with original music) throughout the many years when Martin was out of the scene. I agree that his band lacks the vocal character of classic Ash during Martin's tenure however, Martin's voice is shot these days anyway. I'd even argue that Andy's voice is holding up a lot better than Martin's.
As one of the few Wishbone Ashe true fans in IRAN, I`ve been waiting for such an Enlightening interview for couple of decades
Not sure the government would like to hear you playin it.
Right on! Keep on rockin'. Wishbone Ash is a Class Act. Martin really carries the soul of the sound.
Rock on brother! Axios! WA is pure class.
All Hail from Tehran IRAN !!!
FANTASTIC interview @Mark !!! Thank you SoOooVery Much sir
"All Hail from Tehran IRAN !!! "
I first heard Wishbone Ash through the Argus album back in 1980 when I was living in Nigeria. Their music gets around !
First band l ever saw 1972 one of the best bass players in the business, and contributing more to wishbone ash than people give him credit for, certainly a true rock n roller
Legend, saw him last week at Chistlehurst he has amazing energy for his age and the band are excellent 🤘🏻 thanks Mark and Martin
Marty's band is the best off shoot of WA. I have seen Andy's band a few times, but Marty's band is pure WA.
Great interview as ever, Mark. Love the way that you manage to slip in thoughtful questions and then step back to allow Martin to be expansive. Martin is a great raconteur !
Glad you enjoyed it
Marty always has something to say. I read his book too. He is the man. Thank you Mark.@@markchattertonsrockfiles7104
Personally, I keep going back to the bass solo in Handy. I've never heard anyone write a bass solo that's storytelling, as if the bass is talking... hard to put into words. Innovation on another plane maybe. Bottom line, the solo is just so inspiring for me to want to be creative/unique at anything.
Right?? That solo stands the test of time for sure. one of THE greatest Rock bass solo's ever!!!
Truee
Great interview Mark. I love this guy and his music. Songwriter and bassist extraordinaire
Thanks Clive.
I was so fortunate to these guys with the original line up. Then with Laurie, then much later with Andy Powells line up. But nothing like Steve Upton Martin Ted and Andy. GREAT LIVE BAND, I always felt they deserved much more acclaim and money for their talent.
I loved hearing about Martin's stories from life on the road,I wish you all the luck in the world for 2022.from Shaz in the east Midlands.
Martin is spot on about Streaming companies ripping musicians off.
Was fortunate to talk to Mr T after a gig nice thing about it was he gave the time to chat to you.
What a really great interview. You shouldn't spend so much time on your backdrops. Thanks!
Fay Dunaway dated, married...and divorced....Peter Wolf from the J. Geils Band...
Fantastic seeing Martin talk so candidly about his experiences. My dad who is about the same age as Martin got me into Wishbone Ash at a young age and I've loved the music ever since. I;ve been playing bass for over 30yrs myself now and it still amazes me how Martin writes such creative and tuneful bass lines. The cover bands I play in only want to pander to the audience with modern pap so I don't get the chance to play his wonderful bass lines live but I'll keep trying to persuade them :-)
Hi steve.l myself have been bass for 45yrs now and for the last decade have been playing in a WA covers band. Its such a privilege to to be able to play such great bass lines.
Took me two hours of solid practice to get the Sometimes world bass line right. I was mortified when I saw him play it AND sing at the time.
WA covers band? I would love to see you guys. @@alanallcock9718
I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin in the '60's and '70's, where every guitarist I knew (including me) would launch into the opening riff and chords of Blowin' Free at one time or another. I had the great pleasure of seeing Wishbone Ash live in the early '80's, and still consider it to be one of the best concert experiences of my life. Excellent interview, by the way!
I like the guy, genuine. thanks for all the music Martin, hope to see you again on the Fylde Coast
Great interview Martin, see you at The Globe Cardiff in March..,
Always good to hear from MT-wise man. I have a rare copy of his book, sent from his house. It gives me all the answers I need. Also bought the giant box set with all the CDs-complete.
A coup to get Martin to visit you !! Of course, those of us who have kept up to date with Martin will know most of the stories. Interestingly never heard the one about the Italian/American driver before. Situation could have got totally out of hand. Anyway good to see him as ever.
Argus was the first album I ever bought aged 12 in’72, what a classic to start my obsession with music!
I saw Wishbone Ash at the Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1973... "Blowing Free" was a song written about my girlfriend at the time... Her hair was golden brown, blowing free like a corn field...
Thanks for having Martin on hand.
Martin's a great storyteller. Very talented. I saw the There's the rub tour in November 1974 at the Tower theater Upper Darby ( Philadelphia) with Caravan. Great then over the years, and still moving along !
Loved what he said about the importance of music. Very spiritual. I also noticed he darkness/something off about top of the pops. Again, I think he is attune with aura and vibe. I love his no bullshit brain. He also didn't sell his soul/heart of the band to the plastic pumps they now call the music industry. Not an easy road, doesn't always provide the best for exposure but he made damn well sure his vision of the band remained undiluted. Solid mind. Pure rock and roll.
Just Testing 1980 brilliant Wishbone 4
Very much enjoyed the interview with Martin.
All the best 👍
Many thanks
Outstanding Interview Martin on top form
J.Geils - Peter Wolf dated and married Faye Dunaway. Martin was trying to remember their name.
Yes
Great interview. Martin is/was the heart and soul of Wishbone Ash and the more you hear about, for example, Argus, this becomes even more apparent.
Really enjoyed watching this . I can’t believe how good Martin’s memory is about all of these things that have happened in his life .
I really like Just testing! Master of Disguise! And I think it’s one of there best album covers!
I bought Marty's albums full price from his site. Sad to hear it does not cover the cost. wow
Me too.
Great work as usual Mark. Very interesting interview with Martin. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Many thanks 👍
Argus was phenomenal!! Means so much to me.
I'm so glad I found media about Martin Turner and Andy Powell WISHBONE ASH
Very interesting, indeed, both of you. Well interviewed, Mark. You allow Martin to talk, and Martin is fantastic to listen to. Nick J
One of the best bands, great music, and beautiful bass playing.
First concert I went to was Wishbone Ash at the Rainbow in 75, I think it may have been Laurie's first tour with the band and he did not disappoint.
J Geils band one of the greats - pre centerfold crap. Full house one of the classic live albums and raps by Wolfe
oh yu are so right Martin , the Blowing Free song needed to be on that album, cause it made the balance , it made the balance between the warrior and the lover , ..... which all men have within them !
Very thoughtful interview.
A Brilliant mixed Album 🎵🎶🎸
Thanks Martin and Mark. I saw the band several times and wore those albums out.Excellent music thank you Martin. Still looking around for your book.
I wish I had bought the bookmyself when it was available at around £25. Even more so after watching this interview (though some of the things I hoped to learn about arnt there - hence the wish for the book. Great watch and listen anyway
Some 20 years ago I heard from a Wishboner friend in Tehran that, one of the producers of Purple(he didn`t know Derek`s name) along with Great Martin Birch caused Ash to become well known and progress significantly
and after while ASH introduced CAMEL in 1972 as its opening act at Hammersmith University
are these contents true ??
Thanks for your kind comments Adel. The producer was Derek Lawrence, who produced both Deep Purple's and Wishbone Ash's first three albums. He managed to get Wishbone Ash their record deal with MCA records in America in 1970. Martin Birch was the engineer for the first three Wishbone Ash albums and all of the Deep Purple albums from 1969 to 1977, and then producer for many Iron Maiden albums. It was Ritchie Blackmore who recommended Wishbone Ash to Derek Lawrence when Ash supported Purple in early 1970. Don't know about Camel supporting Wishbone Ash. Perhaps you mean Hammersmith Odeon and not Hammersmith University, which they first played at in 1976. In 1972 the only London venues they played at were the Rainbow Theatre and the Roundhouse.
@@markchattertonsrockfiles7104 My pleasure Sir
Yeah I know full well that there are two Venues at LON Hammersmith Odeon and Apollo, but in a book published during 2000s in IRAN the author mentioned Camel 1ST MAJOR GIG WAS AT HAMMERSMITH UNI/COLLEGE" thats why I wonder !! cos I knew full well that there arent any venue in this name at London (Although, unfortunately, I have not traveled to London yet : )
ua-cam.com/video/yCJCcWoNC-Q/v-deo.html
@@adelkiani588 There are a couple of colleges in Hammersmith. I don't know if they were there in the 1970s, though.
Great insight into your life on the road with the band martin. got to see you play live in looe Cornwall. courtesy of a good friend your sound man-mark emery. Thanks for signing the record for me, hope to catch you live again some time, good luck on the rest of your tour .. cheers chappers..
Love WA and LOVE Marty's band and follow them. Misha and Danny are killer. Tim Brown was HOT drums. New guy not so sure....give him time.....TIm had the Steve Upton swing and speed....man he killed it.
I saw WA in 73-74(?) as main act with Heartsfield opening act. Damned good show!!
