- In 1972 Wishbone Ash struck gold with their third album Argus, which helped propel the band to superstar status.
The album made Wishbone Ash one of the most popular rock bands in the world. Argus was a truly original album that saw the band at their commercial and creative peak. Argus contained epic, often medieval, themes, brilliant vocal harmonizing, insturmental precision, and arguably the best song writing of Wishbone Ash's career.
Tracks such as "The King Will Come", "Warrior" and "Throw Down the Sword" still feature in the band's live set to this day. Over time Argus has came to be regarded as The quintessential Wishbone Ash album, the one that best realized the group's complex vision.
This penetrating film review features in depth interviews with Martin Turner and Ted Turner who return to the original multi-track tapes to trace the creation of a masterpiece.
Being a musician that toured for 20 years I can honestly say there are probably 2 dozen albums that have been "life changing" for me over the years. Argus is one. Incredible composition, larger than life bass tone, some of the best guitar work ever put on record. Well done lads, well done.

Certainly life changing for me. It was like I had found the sound that was me. Totally besotted with Ash and Argus, started a school band with mates and our first on stage song was off Argus. A while later I met a young lady who introduced me to Lord of the Rings, got the connection and everything slotted into place. That theme has stayed with me to this day.

First band l ever saw free trade hall Manchester 1972 Pilgrimage second album l bought 1971 still listening to the same 2 albums absolutely timeless masterpieces and still playing guitar and enjoying doing so at 68 thanks to these 4 guys 🎸❤️🎸❤️
Went to all there concerts at the the Liverpool stadium in the 70s they never disappointed, no gimmicks just good music and musicians
David, saw them many times at the Cambridge Corn Exchange also in the very early 70s. When they first started out, they had garbage thrown at them on stage and was booed. The MC came out and told the audience after 3 songs in and for the show to go on, that nonsense had to stop. He reminded them that Led Zepplin had a similar thing happen at the Marque Club in London when they were starting out also. Needless to say, the show went on and I was blown away by this great band and won't forget that wonderful night of music with twin lead guitars. I even saw them with Laurie Wisefield who was a great replacement for Ted.

My cousin Jon turned me on to Wishbone Ash. I bought this record when it came out in '72. I graduated from high school that year and have loved it from the first time I brought it home and played it on my stereo. It is still one of my all-time favorite records to this day. Blowin' Free still finds me dancing around the house playing air guitar.

They did influence many great bands including Thin Lizzy and Lynayrd Skynard. Saw them in Colorado Springs in 1973, in Denver in 2019. Fantastic shows.
Skynyrd did very little guitar harmony lead runs. A few, but thin Lizzy and Boston did more

Saw them in 71 at Satsop River, we were absolutely stunned, we had no idea who they were as they stole the whole weekend show from all the big names.
One of the main reasons that these songs have a "religious, spiritual or moody" tone to them, is the regular use of minor chords. WA may have used minor chords more than most bands.....this added to "their" sound...I'm surprised no one mentions this...

Wishbone Ash are a guitarist's band first and foremost. I doubt there are any guitarist - certainly of my generation - that would not have had all these albums, but certainly Argus in their collection. And although this was the founding and difinitive line-up, Ash were a band that seemed to retain their unique sound and musicality well into the second and subsequent recent line-ups.
I see Wishbone Ash as the UK's equivalent of Canadian band Rush in many ways, different sound for sure, but the progressive theme, prolific writing, the hard-driving committment and especially both band's longevity puts them both high on my list of all time favourite musicians and mentors.
For me also, a lifelong fan of the Flying -V and Stratocaster, Powell and Schenker forged their sound on one of the most iconic electric guitars ever conceived. With W-A it was the guitar's audio nuances, distinctively different but always harmonically sychronised; the raw, nasal voice of the V complimented by the sweet bell-like tones of the Strat - With equally confident vocal harmony, That was Ash's signature.
Saw them twice in Glasgow, original line up, in the 70s. Still can't get over how utterly brilliant they were

Why is the sum 3 a magic number? It's the same for such bands, it's basically a law of nature: after the third LP/CD, etc., everything went down musically and qualitatively for everyone. From the genius of the first three albums to normal to embarrassing. The reason is that youthful creativity is lost. Or they died at the age of around 30. A natural law that was only withheld from Bach and Bethoven and Hayden ecct. and some jazz musicians and singers.
Have always loved this record from the day it came out in 72 every year of every decade and again yesterday. Have 3 mint copies in my collection.

Pretty good doc but how can they cover the album and not include the standout track "Sometime World". Still some rancour with Andy Powell? His solos on that are stupendous

So great to see Martin talking vid he’s like me and loves to talk. I didn’t get the chance to talk to you Martin cos Andy interrupted us when he brought me to your house and he took over, I think you and me could have a few moments laughs but he controlled me being with the band, So sorry I cudnt tell you why I cudnt tell you my feelings about WA that’s why I cried that night in frustration because Andy didn’t jet me talk to you .Youvwere the power behind WAv and I see that now. I’m just sorry the band didn’t see an alternative route . But you brought us loads of emotion and creative stuff so thank you for ever for that.

The answer is yes Lawrence ,K.K has stated that they were a very big influence on his playing.
One of my most played albums. The harmonies - vocal and lead ; the feel of the album, in it's entirety. Phenomenally sweet music. Good video, really joins the dots.
Got to see the original lineup in 1973 in Fresno, California. What a great show too bad they never made a DVD back then of live dates.🎸🎸✌️

I've recently tripped over my Wishbone Ash collection, and revisited many of those albums. What a stupendous band - so many unforgettable melodies and lyrics from a time when talented musicians unashamedly aimed to bring beauty. I'm not too pleased to suddenly find myself knocking on the door of being 69, but that's the price one willingly pays to have grown up with bands like this. For me, this stuff never ages, just reminds me of a time when great bands served hard apprenticeships, the long slog, playing increasingly bigger venues until some A&R rep recognised genius; so unlike the numerous vacuous and vain 'musicians' of today, preening for (anti?) social media cameras and programming their material on computers.
They would make a super group if they all got back together

6th May 1971 walked into a pub called the castle Tooting Broadway my 21st birthday . Big Hall out the back ended up beingstage right of Andy Powell Hooked bought the album and the song book learnt the stuff.mr Turner&Powell is self evident in my playing

2:57 It all makes sense now! I was a big Iron Maiden fan from 1980-86 and discovered Wishbone Ash and had to acknowledge the heritage of that twin harmonised guitar sound. Never knew Martin "Headmaster" Birch (Iron Maiden's producer) was Wishbone Ash's sound engineer! Who Knew!

I still have these albums - First learned Blind Eye - The 2nd LP Argus really helped - Theres The Rub was much more advanced

I remember recording Jail Bait, late at night on the family radio-cassette, aged about 11? This was before I even realised what rock music was...
But I KNEW this "song" was head and shoulders above all the other stuff that was being played!
I've been a lifelong fan of WA since they started up - seen them many times and even joined their fan club back then. But I must say, that the first 3 albums are masterpieces, then Wishbone 4 was fair to middling. After that it all seemed to go tits up. Until New England, which is an amazing album - so very underrated. Then that twat Andy Powell really cut off his nose. At which point I had to stop watching this 'documentary'. Showing the twat's "new" band playing the old classics is just ridiculous. And interesting that he does not contribute to the film. Great that Martin took it in his stride and keeps on going - they've just completed a US tour and continue to play. He is still the world's greatest living bass player. Rock on Martin and the guys. If the original 'documentary' film maker and Martin want to hit me up, I will be happy to make the definitive Wishbone Ash film.
I saw them in New Mexico and have always been curious about the 'Zia' patch on Ted Turner's guitar strap, it was also Steve Uptons birthday and they brought a birthday cake with candles on stage , very cool show !
Can’t agree with Whispering Bob’s Deep Purple analysis. With Lord and Blackmore trading lead / solo work, they were more innovative than anyone else at the time 😎
Went to a concert that featured Robin Trower, Eddie Money and Wishbone ash, Never heard of Wishbone ash, and really didn't hear to much about this guy Eddie Money either, he was just starting out. I went to go see Robin Trower, Wishbone ash piloted for Eddie Money, By the time Wishbone ash got done, I felt I already got my moneys worth out of the concert. I could have went home, and been happy. They were that good. I was glad I stuck around though. This guy Eddie Money put on a great show too, Because my main attraction was for Trower I stayed for him. Trower was decent, but his base player had to leave every about every other song, was either to go do another couple of lines to continue, or he had a bathroom issue that evening. I can honestly say that Eddie Money stole the show from Trower, but Wishbone ash stole the show for the night. This was at Seland arena in Fresno. CA. Not sure what year that was but somewhere in the early to mid seventy's.

Very enjoyable documentary about one of my favourite albums, Sometime World is my favourite Wishbome Ash song, just sublime, seen them in concert four times, one was the return of the original line up in '89 at the Colston Hall bristol filmed for the granada Bedrock tv series, backed by Spirit no less, Great days that will not come again but at least we were there and will remember them until we're gone and who knows maybe we'll take them with us wherever we will go.

There's the rub is the best! Wishbone fan since 73. Loved Argus, but all the songs on Rub are very good. Lady Jay is their masterpieces - a touching folk tale sung with such pathos by Martin, and Laurie's wailing guitar solo is so moving!
I’m from Minnesota. I first became aware of them around 75 or 76. A local band, who were really good was obviously very influenced by wishbone ash. And played a lot of their stuff. So of course we had to have the real stuff! Still have it.

A great band and I always loved Argus, for me it's their flagship album. Only saw them live one time, and that was at Leeds University, that was mid 70's ish and Laurie Wiseman had just joined the band
My favorite band plus Yes as all time faves, Steve Upton is such an amazing drummer. I learned so much from him. Martin's current band has it really going on.
Haven't seen this doc before ..these guys are still to this day rattling around in my head, Martins' lyrics on those Argus tracks had a big impact on me at the time

Listening to their interview, I get a sense that they put a lot of thought into the making of their music. It wasn't haphazard. Every song was carefully mapped out. Compare them to a similar band like the Allman Brothers, they would probably tell you they had no idea how they came up with some of their music. Duane Allman and Dickey Betts jammed, the band followed and made it up as they went along.
This has been one of my favorite albums since it came out. I'd have liked to hear about Leaf & Stream, though. It has grown in my opinion from being something I thought was filler to my favorite Wisconsin Ash song.

Sometimes the guitar licks get a little bit repetitive, but that's the way the "advanced" musicians played in those days, also Zappa.😊
My all time favorite band... British southern rock with a left handed drummer. Saw them at the Agora around 1982... I remember Andy looking at his band mates in awww during the Phoenix solo as the place just erupted. My friend took their set list...lol.

39:30 that C and Bb in the lower harmony always bugged me..! (otherwise he sings C# and B which is correct) But now that it's been revealed that they recorded both parts together on the same mic, they probably didn't hear it at the time and couldn't punch-in to fix that one note (or it didn't bother them)
ARGUS, The only rock album I can think of in which every number is great.
I saw Wishbone Ash about 10 times an absolute brilliant outfit regards of the personal on stage but i never saw the original 4 members together on stage

This is part of the protype for Iron Maiden later on. All the dual guitar harmonies and melodies. They're among Steve Harris' biggest influences.

I love Argus Album since I heard it the first time 1972. By that time I was 16 years old. It blew my mind. (It is still blown).
I first heard Argus when in a common room at school at Quorn Leicestershire. I’m now approaching 66! I still love it.

Sept 30, 1972, Oval Cricket Ground, London. WA with Genesis, ELP, Focus, Jack Bruce, Argent...I was there! The bonfire of the matting over the wicket is legendary. What a line up! I was 17.
So jealous - wish I’d been there. Regret not having seen Wishbone Ash back in the day. Same for ELP and Yes 🫤

Oh, man! I loved this band. My friends and I were a handful of rockers who even knew of these guys where I grew up. Had all their albums but never had a chance to see them live, unfortunately. We used to play "Blind Eye" and "Silver Lady" in our band. We felt like gods...lol Great to see this post. Thanks for all the great music guys.

@@maxb9315 Maybe so. It's been a very long time. But I remember the first line as' Silver Lady lost in a haze'. After that, I'm a blank. I won't cheat and look up the lyrics and pretend. I'm too old to try to fool anyone...lol, But Silver Shoes would probably be correct then. Yes, it was 'There's the Rub' it was the last album I got by them.
