      The voice acting and sound design is awesome too. The senators are dripping with passion with their proposals. While I have seen this trailer many times I usually notice something new. For example, after hearing the Senator say Hannibal will invade from the south and Syracuse will rise in revolt, you can hear him continue to say that they should reduce their taxation while he is being drowned out by the other senators. Overall perfect attention to detail whoever was in charge of this trailer must have a real passion for history.

      +zellarsDD777 Except it failed him every step of the way. First he lost much of his army to the Gauls, then all but one elephant died during the trip over the Alps (not to mention he lost an eye), and finally, due to false intelligence, he was left with no reinforcements in Italy due to the states refusing to side with him. He did make the trek, but not without much sacrifice that led into his demise and the fall of Carthage.

      +Nick De Meersman Argued, which means it didn't happen. Perhaps it could have ended that way, I won't even debate with you on that because yes, it might have gone in his favor. But the point is, he didn't. The fact it was even argued that it could have worked out in his favor proves that he wasn't exactly good at planning ahead. Therefore, not exactly a great feat considering he continually failed Carthage. It was an amazing attempt, however, just could have gone better if he thought through things like "Maybe there's a way to get pass the Gauls without war? Maybe there's a less dangerous path in the alps? Maybe the spies were mistaken?" In other words, have a back up plan. Don't rely solely on plan A. That is poor strategizing.

      +Sharkalope productions Um, no, not really. All the generals he defeated weren't "shit", they just weren't good enough. None of them were truly "shit". Perhaps at the river Trebia, the all-too eager Sempronius could have been said to be an incompetent leader, but I would argue that he was a victim of the Roman political system and expectations during that time period.
      When the Fabian strategy was in place, he managed to escape Fabius' army that had surrounded him in a trapped in a valley, with the only exit blocked by the Romans. And after that incident, Hannibal went to Fabius' manor, destroyed everything near it but his actual property. So now it would appear that Fabius was even more of a coward than he already was, but was also an idiot and possibly a traitor.
      He managed to draw so many Roman armies into supposedly good terrain to fight in, that is to say, flat and treeless. But at Trebia and Gerunium , he had hid troops in bushes or in ditches. And as you know the Romans were defeated. Except at Gerunium, the cautious Fabius saved them from certain defeat.
      And at Cannae, neither of the two consuls were fools. As you already know, Paullus was the grandfather of the historian patron Scipio Aemilianus, who would have defended his reputation. Varro on the other hand, not so lucky, he was the first in his family to become a consul. But we know that Varro wasn't a total idiot because he was later given important commissions and military commands.
      Of course Hannibal's victory at Cannae can largely be chalked up to how well he knew his opponent, who basically used the same tactics over and over again. Punch through the middle, eat away at the rest of the army from there. The deployment of his army was genius, the total encirclement of a large army with a smaller one, unheard of before. He knew how weak, or strong his troops were, and knew how strong the Romans were, and used this to his advantage.
      And at Zama, Hannibal had finally met his match. Not someone who merely "knew what they were doing" but someone who had much experience in conquering Spain and defeating Hasdrubal. But, Hannibal no longer had as many veteran troops he could rely on in battle. And I would still say he was a very good leader, being hired as a military advisor by the Seleucids many years later. Of course at Thermopylae and Magnesia the Seleucids lost to the Romans, but this is merely indicative of the bad fighting habits of most Hellenistic rulers of that time period, lack of discipline/bravery, and the disastrous use of chariots/elephants.
      But yes, his victories in the Second Punic War were hollow, amounting to nothing less than a mountain of dead Romans. Even if he did not intend it, his mountain of dead Romans set off a massive chain of events that culminated the death of the republic and birth of the empire.

    • @timothymtorres
      @timothymtorres 2 роки тому +45

      Agreed. The amount of balls it took for him to take the trek over the Alps was suicidal. That's why they never expected it. It's the same thing that happened when Scipio took his legions and invaded Africa. One thing that gets overlooked at the battle of Cannae is that Hannibal was able to hide his elite units in the flat terrain in the open. (all wearing Roman equipment no less) When they attacked the flanks, I'm sure the Roman's thought it was some type of friendly fire and couldn't catch on to the ruse quick enough to defend. Hannibal was truly Albert Einstein when it came to warfare. Mad respect.

Every senator making a statement knows a part of the plan, but none of them piece together the BIG picture. • @OlOleander
    @OlOleander 4 роки тому +91

    This will always be one of my favourite trailers. It perfectly balances the multiple threats you can expect to face in TW with, finally, the terrible arrogance of the Roman Senate overlooking what we all know actually occurred - Hannibal's bold march over the Alps.
    Fantastic showcase of the paths available in grand strategy: conservative, slow warfare based on destroying the opponents' allies and economy, diplomacy to forge powerful alliances and cut your enemy's feet out from under him, and, lastly, daring, high-risk high-strategy military maneuvers gambling to win or lose it all. Its use of hindsight is masterful in that respect. While the Romans are distracted defending three fronts, the only one they really overlook - the Alps - almost led to Rome's total defeat.

  • @HoundDogBlue

    I think it's cool that every single one of these events happened besides the invasion of Sicily. Seguntum was conquered by the Carthaginians, they did forge some sort of agreement with the Macedonians, and Hannibal. did famously cross the Alps. Also, they start with an adapted quote from Cato the Elder, whom after every speech, no matter the topic, would say something along the lines of, "and I think Carthage should be destroyed." Scared that your Israelite friends would be found out to be nothing but cold blooded killers? Oh, also the fact that you don't know the difference between a Numidia and an Egyptian.

      French Men Carthage was a Phoenician colony that eventually grew in power far beyond their parentage. They were natural sailors because the phoenicians were a sea faring trade race and Carthage continued this tradition from a tremendously powerful strategic position. Their rivals were the Greeks who they gradually out maneuvered to achieve almost complete dominance, they only lacked Sicily as they already had Sardinia and it was the Romans who betrayed the treaty and supported Sicily in expelling a Carthaginian garrison that started the first punic war. Now the Carthaginians themselves, being of phoenician descent were white but they used mercenaries and subjugated neighbouring tribes as part of their army. This included the black african numidian horseman who were instrumental to a lot of the successes Hannibal had. It also included spanish and celtic troops as well. Later on some Itallian city states or itallian allies as they were called, supported Hannibal.

    If he had support from Carthage when he needed it Hannibal would crush Rome almost singlehandedly... unfortunately, that sort of genius creates a lot of jealousy that in the end destroyed Carthage itself.
    Also, this video is incorrect in saying that "Illyria will rise up against us" since they were at this time at war with the Greeks... so it's kinda funny.

      I'm just saying that it's funny to say that the Greeks will go against Rome when they were already at war with them... at least some of them anyway, Macedonia for example.
      Later on Hannibal does make an alliance with Philip V though... not that it made much difference.

      Illyria wasn't under the Greeks control when Hannibal crossing the Alps, but rather under the command of a Rome puppet. Also, the concept that Hannibal did not receive any support is nothing but a popularized theory to cast Hannibal in a even greater light. For the first few years of the 2nd Punic Wars, Carthage and Rome were still officially in a truce. Despite Hannibal declaring war on Rome, the Romans maintained their peace with Carthage. It was only later after the truce expired did Romans decided to declare war on Carthage. Before you say anything about that, the peace period actually benefit Carthage as it allowed the city to gather the money to hire mercenaries later in the war. If it had ignored the true, Carthage would not only be at a strategic disadvantage but also diplomatically as no states would trust Carthage to keep its promises.
      Furthermore, when in the war, the Carthaginian Senate recruited several mercenary armies to lend support to Hannibal. However, they have to land in Carthage-controlled Spain and Sicily first because they did not want to get risk losing countless men and ships trying to force their way through the Roman Navy. The Roman consuls realized this and deploy armies to Spain and Sicily to held down the Carthaginian reinforcements. The Roman army in Sicily managed to defeat the forces of Carthage and its allies. Although the Roman army in Spain would eventually get eliminate, they achieved their goal of delaying the Carthaginian. Then, as you know, Scipio Africanus came along and proceed to defeat the Carthaginian in Spain and North Africa.

      The way Romans speak of Greece is wrong, they were either directly or indirectly at war with Macedon, so acting surprised that common enemies have a sort of an alliance is a bit odd.
      Also, Carthage was never truly committed with the war against Rome, same with the First Punic War, because their objective was different than Rome's.
      Rome wanted to utterly defeat their opponents and force them to subjugation, Carthage (same with other countries with Greek heritage) never wanted such a decisive result but rather to stop the war at some point and have an advantageous peace treaty.
      That of course is significant and indeed means that if it were the other way around, meaning Hannibal was Roman and invading North Africa, he will be supported in any way possible. Victory at any cost, unfortunately that wasn't Carthage's way.
      In fact, the slim support he received was not so much from Carthage, but from his own Barcid family.
      So yes, you can definitely say that with proper support Hannibal would change the outcome of the second Punic war.

      Expect, you ignore how Scipio Africanus himself receive little support from Rome itself and yet achieved much more than Hannibal.
      Hannibal had himself to blame as well. While he knew how to win battles, he was terrible when it came to diplomacy and strategies.
      Hannibal forced various Iberian and Celtic tribes to join him through military force.
      Scipio relied on good-will diplomacy such as releasing the Iberian hostages that Hannibal families forcibly held in New Carthage to win over allies.
      In Italy, Hannibal actively encouraged Latins and Greeks to rebel but refused to provide them any support, thus allowing Rome to crush them.
      In North Africa, Scipio provided the majority of his forces to help ensure that Masinissa would gained total control of Numidia. In turn for Scipio's support, Masinissa provided Scipio the cavalry he needed to later defeat Hannibal.
