Poor Hannibal. He doesn't know that Rome has likely already been destroyed by the Venetii or the Etruscans, and that their only legion is currently halfway between the coast of Rome and the edge of the map.
Hannibal crossing the Alps is just the prelude. He destroyed at least 3 Roman armies of larger size than his own. Seriously one of the best generals of his age. If only he got the support from Carthage he requested.
Interestingly enough, when Mago Barca went before the Carthaginian Senate after the Battle of Cannae to request reinforcements the majority elected to send reinforcements l, but Hanno the Second, a political enemy of Hannibal, used his power and influence to slow the recruitment of the reinforcements by about 6 months. Then when the reinforcements were ready Hanno had convinced the Senate to send them to Iberia instead since Hasdrubal was losing the fight in Iberia.

I love this trailer. Geopolitics in antiquity. Rome has some legitimate rivals including Carthage, Greece, who haven’t been brought under its fold yet.
I love this trailer, it's probably my favorite out of any game. The reason being all of this actually happened in the Second Punic War. Every senator making a statement knows a part of the plan, but none of them piece together the BIG picture. It's a great portrayal of Rome's general apathy in the initial days of the Second Punic War, this trailer gets so much cooler when you know all the subtle things the developers put in here :3
This will always be one of my favourite trailers. It perfectly balances the multiple threats you can expect to face in TW with, finally, the terrible arrogance of the Roman Senate overlooking what we all know actually occurred - Hannibal's bold march over the Alps. Fantastic showcase of the paths available in grand strategy: conservative, slow warfare based on destroying the opponents' allies and economy, diplomacy to forge powerful alliances and cut your enemy's feet out from under him, and, lastly, daring, high-risk high-strategy military maneuvers gambling to win or lose it all. Its use of hindsight is masterful in that respect. While the Romans are distracted defending three fronts, the only one they really overlook - the Alps - almost led to Rome's total defeat.
I think it's cool that every single one of these events happened besides the invasion of Sicily. Seguntum was conquered by the Carthaginians, they did forge some sort of agreement with the Macedonians, and Hannibal. did famously cross the Alps. Also, they start with an adapted quote from Cato the Elder, whom after every speech, no matter the topic, would say something along the lines of, "and I think Carthage should be destroyed." Such a fucking magnificent trailer.
Invasion of Sicily was indeed planned and ALMOST happened but the Romans caught wind of that plan after they captured and interrogated the crew of a stranded ship off the coast of Sicily
Though i know much of hannibal but this trailer brings me to tears of how epic it is. The audio, music, the senators going wild in the background while we see different parts of rome as they fears for the doom coming for them. And the scene of hannibal marching over the alps was just so epic i can't descripe how epic it is. Shame more studios that makes trailers to this day can't make such an epic trailer but the total war team have been real good at making trailers and continuing making great total wars and that feat that have done that for so long. They deserve an award for their trailers. Few studioes can match their skills at making trailers so epic
For those of you who aren't aware: This is historically accurate. Hannibal's plan to invade italy was to cross the Alps in the beginning of winter. It demolished almost all of his forces, but it led to his campaign to take Rome, which very nearly succeeded.
I believe it caused his brain to flick a switch and put him in a perpetual state of full brain capacity that forced him to make his amazing entrapments, encirclements, and military prowess. Rome raised over a million men to fight him. A million men would not be mobilized again in europe until the Napoleonic wars.
@@noujaadw from what I recall, thats a very debatable topic. There doesn't seem to be any historical record of why he never attacked Rome, and while the siege equipment is an interesting answer to this question, its still pure speculation

Imagine if woolly mammoths were still alive by then and living in that region for Hannibal to command. THAT would've been awesome, seeing them tank the cold weather and live to rampage through Rome. Hannibal probably still would've failed to bring down Rome, but it would've been badass.
You mean mammoths that survived from what happened 12,000 years ago and adapted to the climate during that time? That would change also the dynamics of warfare. Europeans would have access to 'war mammoths', thereby the Romans would not be surprised if Hannibal brought his war elephants. Hell, even the Romans might have their own war mammoths, so as the Celts.
I adopted the "sit down, you old fool!" from 0:26 directly into my repertoire. The first time I used it was on my old man. He responded with his characteristic senile rage, while my mother burst out laughing in affirmation.
And in the end it is the Carthaginian senators who refused to reinforce him while Rome kept pouring out new legions. Sometimes your closest allies are greatest enemies
Carthage had its reasons - the Numidian King allied with Rome at the time, so they had to diversify some of their forces. However, Hannibal has eventually failed at that one aspect in the military, which has defeated every other great commander in history - Napoleon I Bonaparte in Spain, Carolus XII in Russia, General Robert Lee in USA, Alexander the Great in India, or Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Korea - *logistics.* He couldn't sustain any long hold in the Italian Peninnsula (mostly due to lack of siege equipment), and was hoping to defeat Rome in one or multiple decisive battles, that would leave Roman military defenseless against him - that didn't happen, soon the stalemate has occurred, and as such Hannibal could no longer properly supply his armies. It was a similar scenario to the Secession War in the USA in XIXth Century - after a series of successes, South has exhausted its forces it couldn't replenish.
"I shall either find a way or i will make one" - Hannibal Barca. And he was true to his word. Only Alexander exceeded his deeds as a commander in the ancient world IMO,
“my sources tell me he will march his army..” “over the ALPS perhaps?????” - Best dialogue from the trailer, I’m sittin here thinking the Roman’s probably really didn’t believe he’d do it. Not a snowballs chance in hell will he cross his army over the alps all the way from Iberia…..this war should be a movie or an hbo show obviously.

Poor Hannibal. He doesn't know that Rome has likely already been destroyed by the Venetii or the Etruscans, and that their only legion is currently halfway between the coast of Rome and the edge of the map.

Hannibal is like "Challenge accepted".
In this game Rome lost because their generals partied too much. Look in the video , in the top left of the screen , 2:05 - 2:09.
Bet those senators weren't laughing anymore when he was at their doorstep XD
They knew he had no siege equipment. Kind of silly really, but mostly the fault of the Carthaginian leadership.
Knvkl high command screwed Hannibal. I cry.
I sincerely hope that Senator who proposed he would come from the north took a moment to tell everyone "I told you so."
Knvkl but he did good for a little while I heard he whooped ass I never learned how he got defeat but he was very close to wiping Rome off the map
Half of them would soon be cut down in the fields of Cannae, the metal of their jewelry melted down to pave the floors of the Carthaginian Senate.
Rome: Perhaps he’ll cross over the alps and bring with him an army of elephants!!
Hannibal: observe.
Tbf only one elephant survived the crossing. And it couldn't even fight since he was traumatized and probably died after
@@mihaimercenarul7467it’s not about surviving, it’s about sending a message.
Yep, the greatest "Hold my beer" in history.
If ever you feel down in life, like nothing is going for you, come back to this for they may laugh at you but you're crossing your alps.
Probablly Rome will be at hes mercy ...

Play Hannibal at the gates.
I love this trailer. Geopolitics in antiquity. Rome has some legitimate rivals including Carthage, Greece, who haven’t been brought under its fold yet.
I got chills at the end when they started mentioning the alps and elephants.
Then you see the elephant starts roaring a lil. 🐘
Until it full charges
"And I suppose he would swallow an army of elephants!"
"I dare say that would be quite a feast, even for the great Cannibal Barca!"
Gahahaha

All these years later I keep coming back here. Such a great trailer.
I do agree, this is one of my favorite trailers. And I think Carthage should be destroyed.

"Over the Alps perhaps!"
Hannibal: "Yes."
A million men would not be mobilized again in europe until the Napoleonic wars.
the only reason he didn't take Rome is because Hannibal did not possess Siege equipment.
@@noujaadw and he believed Rome still held a large army there but in actuality time had their forces in africa

Hannibal was one of the smartest tacticians back in the day i'm pretty sure hes better than a lot of generals now does too hes just so smart! He attacks from where you least expect it. Truly one of the best tacticians to walk the earth.
Hannibal knew how to gain a victory, but not how to use it.
He could've if he had support of the carthaginian senate. The senate never supported him but called him to defend carthage like a bitch when scipio attacked. Imagine if woolly mammoths were still alive by then and living in that region for Hannibal to command. THAT would've been awesome, seeing them tank the cold weather and live to rampage through Rome. Hannibal probably still would've failed to bring down Rome, but it would've been badass.
Mammoths wouldn't have survived in the Italian climate though. They'd probably only be found in the Siberia at the time
The last of them had died out nearly three millennia before this. Close in the grand scheme of things, but not close enough.
Christ, It gives me creeps when the camera shows the army of Carthage crossing the Alps. And the senators are just laughing. Just a while more...

I adopted the "sit down, you old fool!" from 0:26 directly into my repertoire.
The first time I used it was on my old man. He responded with his characteristic senile rage, while my mother burst out laughing in affirmation.
Nothing as epic as Karl Franz debating the whereabouts of Hannibal with the Roman Senate
1:27 "our legions have sole military access to their land!" love the voice acting
