Out of all the historical inaccuracies of the game, one of the few historical facts that they captured accurately is just how useless the Praetorians really were against actual soldiers.
@@hugovenegas6509 Initially, yeah, they were made up of Caesar's favorite legions which had joined up with Octavian during the Second Triumvirate. Later on, Praetorians would be recruited directly from the Roman Patrician class. However, during the reign of Tiberius, the Praetorians amassed considerable political power and economic influence. This made them incredibly wealthy, but their wealth combined with their safe and comfortable posting in Rome let them live deeply pampered and comfortable lives. They may have trained, but by the end of the 2nd Century, most of them were rarely if ever deployed in actual combat. Comparatively, the Legions were often deployed to guard the Empire's frontiers and thus faced constant war and military actions, making regular legionaries seasoned, experienced veterans. The Praetorians were sometimes deployed to the frontiers, often times with the Emperor or someone else of note, but never for any extended posting, unlike the Legions which were often in a given area for years. The few times the Praetorians went up against actual Roman Legionaries, they were absolutely demolished. More often than not, the Praetorians would seek to control the succession so as to avoid large scale bloodshed, and when a rival candidate did raise legions against the current Emperor, the Praetorians would often abandon the current Emperor and throw in with the contender if it looked like that contender was going to win. One of the few times they picked the wrong side was when they backed Didius Julianus against Septimius Severus during the Year of the Five Emperors in 193 AD. The Praetorians met Severus's legions in open battle, where they were repeatedly pushed back across Italy by the superior experience of the Roman legionaries. In the end, the Praetorians abandoned Julianus after it was clear that they simply could not match Severus's forces and Severus was proclaimed Emperor. Severus actually ended up disbanding the current Praetorians and replacing them with his own legionaries who were appointed as the new Praetorian Guard. Subsequent Emperors during the 3rd Century would often supplement the Praetorians with their own legions, who were often more loyal to their emperors than the Praetorians. Diocletian for example added two new bodyguard units, the Jovianii and Herculanii, drawn from two of his favorite legions, Legio V Iovia and Legio VI Herculia. The biggest episode of the Praetorian Guard's inferiority is when they backed the Tetrarch Emperor Maxentius against Constantine in the early 4th Century. At the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD, Constantine's legions from Britannia and Gaul faced off against Maxentius's Praetorian Guard. Constantine triumphed, utterly destroyed the Praetorian Guard, killing Maxentius and the Praetorian Prefect and then disbanding the Praetorian Guard completely after assuming command of Maxentius's portion of the Tetrarchy. After that, the role of guarding the Emperor was given to the Herculanii and Jovianii and the newly formed Scholae Palatinae (Literally Palatine Schools). These units would guard Roman Emperors both in the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. They would survive the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire and continue to protect Emperors in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. By the Middle Ages, the Roman bodyguards were again reformed into the Varangian Guard. The Varangians were recruited from Vikings from Scandinavia and Rus from the Volga (basically the ancestors of modern day Russians and Ukrainians. The Rus themselves were Vikings which had settled in Eastern Europe). Later on, the Varangians would be made up of Anglo-Saxons from England and Normans from Normandy and Sicily. Because of their lack of political connections in Constantinople, they would continue to guard the Byzantine Emperors up to the Fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in 1453. None of this is to say that the Praetorian Guard were incompetent or incapable of fighting. They were still renowned soldiers, but their lofty position in Rome meant that they lacked combat experience and their leaderships lacked tactical thinking that the legions and their commanders from the Roman frontier possessed. This put them at a huge disadvantage against actual legionaries.

@@GenocidalSquid You have to take in account that Commodus saved his strength the whole time while Marius fought ceaselessly. Although not exhausted, he's not in top shape at that point. Ryse was a breath of fresh air man. There was no other game like it at the time and I had a blast playing it. I wish they'd make more gladiator type games.
Actually look at the main commudus guy next to the other 4 other doppelgangers, All of the copies went down like shit maybe they had shit armor, But when you slice the commodus guy himself he just gets knocked back, There are no scratches of blood on him
it's not plate armor, it was more of a "scale" armor that was designed to absorb blunt force but would cave in with a blade in certain locations. shields were not indestructible but a shield would block a blade, especially if it were used correctly, a shield was primarily designed to deflect objects, like a sword and in some cases an axe or even a spear
Because obviously the Britons rode war elephants that they bought from a nation they've never even heard of. Not to mention, that Commodus (despite not being alive for another 200+ years) is Nero's son (who was reported to have killed his pregnant wife bearing the only possible legitimate heir to the Julian-Dynasty). Yes, it sounds legit to me.
Ratatoskr Exactly. It is very entertaining at that too. If people want to play a game for historical accuracy, they are indeed boring little wet-blankets. Just stick to your mods if you're gonna have a problem with it. Another example that is historically based but not accurate is Dynasty Warriors, I didn't play dynasty warriors for its historical accuracy about Ancient China and the 3 Kingdoms, but because it was cool as fuck and had some awesome game mechanics back when people were playing on ps2 and xbox.
This game stuck in my head and I regularly think about. You're basically an immortal killing machine, so it makes sense your moves are redundant, Zeus himself only uses a fucking lighting bolt. This was a great game.
@@yo-yokaito Maybe some people just want to be normal man with an infinite bloodlust for vengeance. God of War is cool, but other games are allowed to have ruthless slayers.
Fun fact: Marcus Aurelius is (was) the father of Commodus. Fun fact # 2: Commodus becomes the emperor of Rome Fun fact # 3: Commodus is killed by Narcissus while bathing.
It was such a pleasant felling seeing Nero being scared sh*tless, realizing, that either way he is doomed and has nower to run, neither hide, because Damocles will chase him, until he is killed...
@B Smith aculy Damocles in Greek lore is the spirt of vengeance and god of vengeance. But yeah your right kratos would destroy him. But they lost every thing but one aculy came back as the God of vengeance even though he died he is still a god.
I ALWAYS loved the scene where Damocles/Marius is so CONSUMED with rage and hatred towards Nero for murdering his family and leading to Rome's potential collapse that you can hear it in his voice and the way he moves. No wonder Nero calls Damocles a demon at the beginning of the game. He's *TERRIFIED* and *SHOULD BE.* You can tell that Nero is also terrified, yelling hurriedly and terrified for someone to kill Damocles as soon as possible, even making sure that the Praetorian Guard search the city and what-not to make sure Damocles does die. This scene sold me the game when I saw it on youtube and I just HAD to try it out when I was able to. And I am so glad to be able to play it, and it's a genuinely fun game to play every now and then.
Even after all this time the graphics of this game easily rival some of the titles releasing today. Crazy. Really wish this game could have had sequel and some expanded gameplay options as well. So much potential in this time period no ones tapped into.
The cutscenes' character models look better than the ones used during combat, though (including Marius's). But yeah, a couple of them really look almost photorealistic, like that... oracle? (can't really remember what she was) who appears near the end of the game
I loved this game, got it on when it came out. Way too many haters for no reason, it's a "tech demo" and? It was great and that's why it still stands up today. I don't care if a games short as long as I enjoy it, I would rather have top a top notch 8-10 hour game then a 80+ hour fetch quest game that I bored with. Some of the best games I have played have been short games.
8:27 I love that shot of "Damocles" killing Commodus and the crowd screaming as he raises the severed head and declares he will kill Nero. The pure *rage* in his eyes alone is enough to give anyone nightmares.
For everyone talking about not being able to hear what he's saying, Roman colosseums had INCREDIBLE acoustics. So even if you were in the nose bleeds way up there, you could still hear what was being said.
its gorgeous, and the story seems great, but legit this gameplay//fighting style looks sorta shit. idk if i should hate the player or the game. looks repetitive as shit, and like you're forced to take hits. dodging and blocking doesn't seem that effective, but being able to just absorb damage with a big 'ol health bar ain't fun either
reported worm Are you comparing this to the old GoWs or the new one? If you’re talking about the new one then I’m afraid that you’re wrong because this game came out in 2013
Well, he realized, that Damocles himself is coming for him - The Spirit Of Vengeance - and there is nowhere to run, neither to hide - it will pursue him until he is killed...
Funny thing is by this time no romans high court son (or any family member of a noble class or senate class) were allowed to figth in the arena like gladiators. Except if it was a criminal or a "enemy of the state" then yes.
+DemonicGoat Well I believe Commodus actually did fight as a Gladiator, though it was looked down upon. Not saying Ryse is going for accuracy though having Commodus be the son of Nero.
+Matthew Ahern “Lawful Paladin” This battle was upon for beeing more accurate in the period of "maddnes" of the emperor Caligula. He really like nonsense violence.
+Charles Hastings, The battles were rigged. The gladiators who fought Commodus would have been wounded before the battle, while Commodus had the best gear money could buy
If you own a ps2 or such, try Spartan: Total Warrior. It was not historically accurate, like Ryse, but it was fun to play! I believe it came out in 2005.
Remember that Damocles is the only one affected by Commodus' poison gas therefore all the spectators see for 10 minutes straight is him just randomly swinging his sword around and pretending to get hit
@@strang7739 Not at all, the kills feel more satisfying and visceral in ryse just like old ac games. Also, this game is more streamlined and polished than odyssey.
I played this game, and it's definitely worth the buy. Also, I never knew this until I stumbled upon it, but you can parry the red (or "dodge away") attacks if you time it right. It's just so short a window, and other than once in the game near the start, you're never told about this.
Mini Tumid The same can be said about God Of War but unless the devs actually said that the game was historically accurate it doesn't actually matter. Forgive me for my ignorance but I don't actually care enough about the game to research about it, the only reason I'm here is because this randomly popped up in my suggestion box, so take this with a pinch of salt if I was wrong, will ya?

Slicing through plate armor like butter... Boi
Emil Wiberg nonsense = good games it's how games work
the bullshit continues when shields are apparently indestructible in this game.
Actually look at the main commudus guy next to the other 4 other doppelgangers, All of the copies went down like shit maybe they had shit armor, But when you slice the commodus guy himself he just gets knocked back, There are no scratches of blood on him
Plot twist: his armour is butter XD
it's not plate armor, it was more of a "scale" armor that was designed to absorb blunt force but would cave in with a blade in certain locations. shields were not indestructible but a shield would block a blade, especially if it were used correctly, a shield was primarily designed to deflect objects, like a sword and in some cases an axe or even a spear

GrumpyCommissar there are many other games with better animations, voice Acting ecc...
Imperial Ace Scholar
Not every animations is doing by human People.
In fact Three are games better than this one
God of war in every game was ahead of its time

@@BWxEclipse Etiam! Do it again
Hey, so I'm just guessing here, but I take it that historical accuracy wasn't the game's main selling point?
It's about historically accurate as God Of War is.
Basically.
The appeal for me is not the historically accuracy. Its ancient Rome based, and thats fucking cool imo. Its just a game for entertainment

This was a great game.
after 2020.....we all wish we where damocles
Bruh god of war way better than mid game
@@yo-yokaito who got you so pissed?
@@yo-yokaito Maybe some people just want to be normal man with an infinite bloodlust for vengeance. God of War is cool, but other games are allowed to have ruthless slayers.
This game actually had such an amazing story
Fun fact: Marcus Aurelius is (was) the father of Commodus.
Fun fact # 2: Commodus becomes the emperor of Rome
Fun fact # 3: Commodus is killed by Narcissus while bathing.
Fact: Damocles wasn't really a betrayed commander
Fun fact this is an alternative history game.

It was such a pleasant felling seeing Nero being scared sh*tless, realizing, that either way he is doomed and has nower to run, neither hide, because Damocles will chase him, until he is killed...

God of War kills this game so Kratos would win
@B Smith aculy they would be friends they were both betrayed lost their family and such. So they would be great friends
@B Smith aculy Damocles in Greek lore is the spirt of vengeance and god of vengeance. But yeah your right kratos would destroy him. But they lost every thing but one aculy came back as the God of vengeance even though he died he is still a god.
Dont compare them lol kratos is a God!!

Tha Profit TW3 is in a another league
Defconpain64 a worse league. The Witcher FUCKING sucks
This part made me feel absolute masculinity.
Val Marko I bet without all that make-up, you and me could be twins

Val Marko me too. It's only two other games that have done that for me Lincoln Clay in mafia 3 and Ezio Auditore in assassin's creed brotherhood.

Even after all this time the graphics of this game easily rival some of the titles releasing today. Crazy.
Really wish this game could have had sequel and some expanded gameplay options as well. So much potential in this time period no ones tapped into.
B Smith of course god of war looks better this game was being developed before the xbox one and the ps4 even came out
The cutscenes' character models look better than the ones used during combat, though (including Marius's).

Some of the best games I have played have been short games.

how to tell if a game was made to look pretty: just when the gameplay gets interesting, it transitions to the cutscene

One of the few instances I don't agree with bad review for a game.
That shit was heavy rain esque.
its gorgeous, and the story seems great, but legit this gameplay//fighting style looks sorta shit.
idk if i should hate the player or the game. looks repetitive as shit, and like you're forced to take hits. dodging and blocking doesn't seem that effective, but being able to just absorb damage with a big 'ol health bar ain't fun either

Imagine using poison, superior numbers, superior equipment, and you still lose.
He really like nonsense violence.
this game wasnt meant to be historically accurate
As I recall, there were occasions, when aristocrats also fought as Gladiators in the arena, in disguise, of course :)
+Charles Hastings, The battles were rigged. The gladiators who fought Commodus would have been wounded before the battle, while Commodus had the best gear money could buy
I used to be SO shit at this game. The level against the barbarian woman still remains unbeaten by me. Not my proudest admittance

They should make a game with spartans.
ulikson pepkola - like Master Chief Spartans or this is Sparta Spartans.
If you own a ps2 or such, try Spartan: Total Warrior. It was not historically accurate, like Ryse, but it was fun to play! I believe it came out in 2005.
TBStudios91 "it's not historically accurate, like ryse" lol what
I meant, just like Ryse (they both are not acurate). I now see my comment could have been interpreted as saying it's accurate, which is ludicrous
ulikson pepkola it's called halo
Remember that Damocles is the only one affected by Commodus' poison gas therefore all the spectators see for 10 minutes straight is him just randomly swinging his sword around and pretending to get hit
3:33 Now isn't this a subtle nod to the "I'm Spartacus" scene from the 1960 movie?

Also, I never knew this until I stumbled upon it, but you can parry the red (or "dodge away") attacks if you time it right. It's just so short a window, and other than once in the game near the start, you're never told about this.
