  • Ever since I can remember my gran has been baking treats, not just for us but for everyone in her life. My gran’s name is Annette but everyone calls her Nettie. And yes, I was named after this magnificent woman. I grew up watching my gran cook and she would often involve me in the process but I still do not know how to make her famous desserts. So I thought that it is about time that I learn how to make them.

    Hello, howzit!
Geez Nannette, I can remember when my gran used to make Melk Terte... hmmmm! It's the best dessert, so tell your granny that I said "Baie Dankie!!" As a professional videographer though, could I make a few filming suggestions for you guys.
    1. You have multiple cameras but you jump cut a lot on the main camera. Perhaps move the second camera to a tower view (as in above your heads) pointing into the bowl so that A: We can see what's cooking and mixing, and B: you won't see so many jump cuts from the main camera making you look more organised/professional.
    2. Your text is tiny, and that yellow colour clashes with whatever odd colour-grading that you have going on there. Perhaps increase the text size and keep it white or put a black box behind it.
    3. The colour-grading is strong and reflects colours like an intense movie. You guys are baking yummy treats here, so your lighting should be bright and fresh! Tone the colours back to a more neutral, light setting and increase the exposure a little.
    4. When you are using multiple cameras, be sure that the RAW colours match each camera. When they do not and then you try to colour grade unmatched cameras, one will look more saturated or sometimes even different colours when they come out at the end. Look at how tanned you guys look at 1:10 and then look how much darker you are when the camera switches at 1:14. This is not consistent and can sometimes look uneven.
    5. Keep your eye focus on one camera. When you lift you head to engage with your audience, you can see that you sort of look around at times, nodding and making eye contact/facial expressions to the other film crew/supporters and this is ok for you because you know who or what you are looking at. But, we, the viewers do not, and since we never get to see what you are looking at, it can make the viewers feel like they are missing out and it can make you look like you are not sure where to look. Stay focused on one camera, and always look there (during the times when you need to look at the camera barrel).
    6. With so much going on in this video, after watching it, I was not sure of the actual recipe. Why don't you throw up the ingredients on-screen during the step by step process as you and your gran add ingredients? Or maybe reiterate all the ingredients again at the end. I do not see the ingredients or recipe in the description either so viewers will have to go through the entire video, piece by piece to try and figure out what to add or mix next.
    7. Your music is light and fluffy the whole way through and then at the very end, its all aggressive and intense, but you don't actually see the milk tart other than a 10 second close up of the outer bowl and a small focus on the cinnamon topping. Your music genre should be consistent.
    8. Viewers will no doubt want to see a slice at the end or someone eating a piece and moaning with excitement as they chomp through the goodness. Perhaps consider adding this when you make your next video!
Please do not think I am telling you that your video is bad. No, it is a really great video. You just need to lay off the action film colours and look at moving some cameras around with good light setups. Your camera folk have some good skills there but it can all blow over if he/she/they try to be too fancy. The audio is good throughout (this is not an easy task) and the running commentary and the option to share your grans' recipe is a great idea! However, tone down the movie style film/edits, brighten your shots, show more of the ingredients being mixed, maybe a recipe and a better-finished close-up and you have a recipe for success!
Remember: A good, warm-hearted story beats all the fancy colour grading and all the smooth extreme closes-ups any day!
