After 36 years in the Andrew I know this well. It was one of the few things the chefs didn't cock up too much. Have made it many times at home and changed it alot to try different ways, add a slice of pineapple * add onions** add woster sauce *** have TWO slices ****. Thanks for that
Cheers buddy. 24 years boy to man for me (at the risk of sounding like Uncle Albert). There was an RN Cookery School stand at the BBC Good Food Show in B'Ham this year. I walked up and said "Cheesey Hammy Eggy and Babies Heads please" - quick as a flash she said, "we still do Cheesey Hammy Eggy but not Babies Heads" Had a chat for a few minutes and 3 or 4 of them joined in (swing that lantern!) and I left saying, "I have to hand to to you lot, taking the only course in the Navy that no-one has ever passed" They wet themselves LOL
I learned of this breed of sannich from a camping buddy. Open fire and a flat rock, very outdoorsy. How much do you love your induction hob? I love saying hob around other Americans, they’ll say “what”? Every tine
@@DigwellGreenfingers It never let me down sitting here with sunday dinner in front of me, I would sling it in the gash for a cheesy hammy eggy toastie
Brilliant! I need to redo the video with the version that has mustard in with the cheese. What boats was he one? I was on the Valiant late 70/80s Have a great week!
@@drawingboard82 I left in '97 and it was a staple on the menu then LOL Quick note on your sub reactor vids - can't remember which one but you said something like "1000kg of fuel would not be far out" I didn't tell you at the time but you are over 10x to high
Lovely stuff, Steve, really got my big wobbly tummy rumbling. At 2m43s I noticed some writing scroll across the screen, but I don't know what it said as there's no way I can watch an egg fry, and read at the same time. [Hardy Ha-Ha, I hoped you enjoyed my silly wee meta-joke there 🤪] Actually, I come to you with a question: From friends / family that have been in the senior service, I've come to know this dish as a Cheesey Wham Bam. Do you happen to know if they're the same dish by a different name, or are there differences that stand CWBs & CHEs apart? I thank you, or anyone that may know, in advance for this vital peice of intel. 😁
Brilliant! You may like this version of the CWB/CHE as well! ua-cam.com/video/qOlkVQ4VUQY/v-deo.html I am sure that they are one and the same but maybe Cheesey Wham Bam is the preferred on submarines as I only heard it called that when I was on HMS Valiant and in barracks at HMS Neptune.
Ahh ha ha! A Croque Madame is a toasted ham & cheese sandwich with an egg on top - a subtle difference. Can't see the Navy wasting the extra slice of bread LOL Thanks for watching Joyce! Have a great weekend.
So funny you should say this as I am re-filming it this week (version 2). Yes, the cheese needs a beaten egg plus some mustard in it. It was a few years ago now and as I recall, I only filmed it for something to do and i didn't want to waste a whole beaten egg on just one slice (tight arse LOL) There was an RN Cookery School stand (with demos) at the BBC Good Food Show in Spring this year. I stopped by and, bold as brass, I said: "Gotta hand it to you guys. The only department in the mob where no one has qualified in the job!" Had a good laugh with them and discussed a few old classics (yes C H Eggy is still served) but they were a bit shocked with Babies Heads and Ghandi's Flip Flops 😂 Thanks for the reminder - have a great week! 🙂
Ah, but Croque Monsieur is made with egg dipped bread and has a layer on top as well. Similar to a Croque Madame but that too has two pieces of bread. Thanks for watching - hope you try this!
This one has been adapted for civvies and is more like the one served shoreside. The one with mustard in etc is on another channel 🙂 I might bring that video to this channel as quite a few ex-sailors have said the same. I'll need to refilm it though as it is about 8 years old now.
I'll try that, but with a poached egg. No fat splashes to clean up!!😂🇬🇧
Perfect, I'll have a go with that idea!

loved this while serving in the Royal Navy !
I still make it now and again. I bet it is too unhealthy for the modern navy LOL

Ha ha! Thanks for watching. The induction hob is so good that I use it in preference to my gas range!
I introduced it to my wife some time ago. She keeps pestering me for it (the CHE) LOL.
LOL It kept me going for 24 years service!
I loved them when I was in with chips& tinned toms!!! Happy days (73)
Don't!!!! I can just see the food on the counter LOL (Sometimes the Cheesey Hammy Eggy was my only option)

Good and simple food, Steve👍👨🍳

Looks good Steve, and made me darn hungry:))
It fills the void Ryan!
Add a little white sauce, and a dab of mustard, and you would have the French classic 'Croque Madame'. Nice.
Almost - but the Navy could never afford the extra slice of bread LOL
great video
What no mustard? This isn’t a cheesy hammy eggy shippers. Mix the grated cheese with a little egg and mustard before spreading on top of the ham.

Wam bam is the same as this but a decent chef mixes the Ham cheese and egg together in one mix and then puts it on the top of the toast
