Vinnie and Yamaha were the best combination, that snare drum has the perfect crack and those toms sound so full and luscious, with Vinnie's chops, the drums sounds godly, i wish Vinnie would go back, but i love Gretsch also
I've been a fan of Vinnie's for over 30 years. In 1980 I asked a friend who was an excellent drummer, who's the guy to watch. He said Vinnie Colaiuta, he's changing the game. I refuse to get into the best talk. Simply put. Vinnie is an incredibly talented drummer!!
That's a great point and one that all drummers should understand. I have read that interview and vinnie got it spot on. However, i must admit i do try to look at how vinnie studies and what he learnt- not to necessarily play like him but to be able to understand how he approaches practice, technique etc. I bought that 'Unreel Drum Book' and it is easily one of the best tools i have ever used...the exercises really prepare you for applying your skills to odd time sigs and different styles.
Vinnie studied with Richard Wilson, who bases his teachings from "... the standpoint of floors, balances, and fulcrums, observing the conclusions of Archimedes, Galileo, and Isaac Newton - using the acceleration of gravity and the theory of mass...." MD Apr '96. Vinnie knows what he's doing.
There is no true way of judging greatness in polite conversation. Each player has their high points. Back in the day Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Art Blakey and Louie Bellson had their duels with no clear "winner".(I'd take BR) It would be excellent to see all of our contemporary favs in a competition. I think it would illustrate that all of them most successfully wail....in their own way. We are fortunate to have the choices. DRUM ON and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. :- ))
It's fun and tricky to solo over that Keep It Greasy riff. Vinnie is really good at internalizing those odd time figures and playing really comfortably over them. The bass line is very hard-hitting and the tempo is up there, so it's not really a space where you'll hear Vinnie's sensitivity...but he's got tons.
when i was watching this i kinda "zoned out" for a bit if you see what i mean, and i realised something.. if youre just a general listener, not a drummer, you dont really pick up on WHY you like something, e.g. a song might have a really funky beat with loads of ghost notes etc, but lots of people wouldnt notice this - i think you really have to be a drummer to appreciate this kind of playing, whereas with steve gadd anyone can love it.. its the simple rhythm people love, not speed and 19/16..
This is an absolutely insane video. Who cares whether you think he is better or worse than another drummer, can't everyone enjoy this for how incredible it is?
Okay Genius...Mr Bigshot..I-know-everything about-drums!!,and drummers!! Prove to me Chamber's can read!!I've sen him on numerous "live" gigs and in many videos, and I've NEVER seen a chart in front of him!! The biggest laugh I had was, seeing him play in a Buddy Rich memorial concert video, and Will Lee had to "coach" him through a big band arrangement, because he has NO reading chops!... I'll await your response Einstein!!
No offense, but there's no point in comparing Weckl and Chambers to Vinnie. Each is a master and each has their own particular style and we're lucky to be able to enjoy them all. I don't think it's possible to choose the 'best' drummer; I think they're all "bests."
its a solo concept that he probably came up with as he was playing. a common practice amoung drummers. also, if you ask that "modern talent" who their drum hero's are vinnie's name would pop up a lot more than you'd think. we drummers 2day are only standing on the shoulders of giants like vinnie. vinnie(amoung others) str8 taught us young cat how 2 play without a single private lesson. theres no way 2 sound better than the guy you got it from.
but i hope im making myself clear - im not saying i dont love vinnies playing, just that i think its a lot more important to play things with rhythm than just to shred - but then again, this was at a "zildjian day" so the entire audience was drummers and would be amazed, so it depends on who your audience is as well. im just remembering my first ever drum lesson, and my teacher showed me a clip of buddy rich, and i remember not being that impressed.. i love it now but its good to remember this.
Ok. Now that I've come back to this: From towards the end of 0:42 to the middle of 0:44 is the first time that I dig that 4,4,4,4,3 division. Getting to REALLY like this!
any videos of this guy? and "this dude" here btw is vinnie colaiuta.. and is more than just ok..yeah actually he is one of the best drummers in the world and of all time..
Never gave a damn about drum solos before but this guy is in the company of Neil Peart, Stu Copeland, and others ( that I haven't discovered yet) in terms of technical profciency and pure balls.
@sofakingrate man...feel the same way. I typically can't stand to hear people to say so and so is the best anything. But without apology I really can say that Vinnie is the best.
@timdrms - It's the original and now discontinued Maple Customs he's playing here. Small square gold lugs and thicker shells than the Absolutes, and better sound.
First, I think you should know that 7/8 is really just 'just' (especially when compared to 19/16 and after one can get used to it as something quite trivial in Indian classical music, say). Second: what does your comment mean? "Later" where, when? This is a 4,4,4,4,3 sub division of 19/16 and NOT 7/8. So please, what did you mean by this utterly confusing comment?
dave weckl and dennis chambers are both amazing drummers, but they don't have the time, feel and solidity that vinnie has. everything he plays, whether it be grooves or fills, etc, is super solid, clean and on time. you could compare weckl and chambers, but neither of them can compare to vinnie.
If Vinnie read all of this competition banter among himself and his peers, he wouldn't dig it at all -- either would Steve Smith, Gadd, Weckl, Bozzio, and especially Freddie Gruber. Freddie would tell you all to " ... shut up, and play the fucking drums, man..."
Lol, I thought that was a backhanded insult at the fact that this was an event held by Scots. The thought of mounting a pasty on a cymbal stand playing it is amusing though.
Better do more research on Colaiuta, he's in a totally different league than Copeland and Peart. Check out the recordings Colaiuta's played on, go to his web site. No way in hell Peart or Copeland even come close to his skill level.
Brilliant said! (By the way, are you from Munich? Munich rocks!) As a drummer, I must say I don't like a solo like this; he burns all the way and there is no development throughout the solo. I wouldn't give him credit for dynamics either (in this clip). Well, my opinion. Felix
no , even tho this is a matter of opinion, vinnie has the SOULllll and chops. vinnie gets my top vote.... over weckl. sorry mate. also check out derico watson, he is sick
This solo is in 19/16 like a section of keep it greasy... este solo esta en 19/16 como una seccion de keep it greasy He is Awesome... who else can play all that over 19...and make it look easy...haha
I don't know if he started with that groove and then developed soloing on top of that - but if he did I wish they would have shown it in this clip. I think it's cooler knowing what his frame of reference was underneath all this
yeah, that's right.. one says Dennis Chambers can't swing, the other says that Vinnie Colaiuta doesn't sound good.. if these were jokes, it would be hilarious, but unfortunately, i think you are serious when writing these funny "statements". Maybe mr. Colauita here can take some lessons on how to "sound good" since he apparently didn't learn that in the 45 years he's been playing the drums..
wow what a hater, theres a reason why chambers is where he is now , and is among the greatest!!!. so what if he cant read music that well, im pretty sure he can play better than you ever will in your entire life.and then you call him pathetic, you wanna know whats pathetic you posting negative comments on you tube about extremly talented that are way better off the you are. by the way great video vinnie rocked that drum set!!
I don't know why, but I've never been a huge fan. Obviouly he's great, but I'd rather listen to Weckl or JoJo Mayer do a solo. Maybe it's the sound of his drums...too muted or something. Give me Dave Weckl.
dennis chambers cannot, i repeat, cannot read music!!! he admitted it in his latest video and if you go to drum channel there's an interview of him admitting it to terry bozzio. do your home work.
Count from where?! Is my lack of ability to find a point of reference what you call his not "dumbing down" his playing? Please help me find a point of reference so I can better appreciate this, because all I have to work with in this stage doesn't allow me to see in this true music making - just a display of almost pointless, highly technical "graphomania". (Please, maybe the sub-division with a rough point of reference might do the trick).
thank god we're allowed to have our own opinion. I would ABSOLUTELY HATE to hear Weckl play with Faith Hill or Sting. Sorry dude.....just because Weckl has been studying with Gruber...SO WHAT!!
Has anybody noticed why Dennis Chambers hasn't played with the likes of Chick Corea, or Herbie Hancock or Allan holdsworth!! You ask....Why???...Because he doesn't know how to read!!! and that's pathetic!, given that he is a great funk and fusion player. Colaiuta, Weckl, and Smith... are not only great players, they can read and interpret "fly shit" when a piece of music is put in front of them. That's why you don't see Chambers playing in a "Swing" big band.
as a matter of fact terry asked him how he remembers all the music he's required 2 play and he said "its like remembering a conversation i had earlier with someone". i love dennis but truth is he's musically illiterate. but then again so was james brown and todd rungren and countless other musicians.
bravissimo,un metronomo nel cervello e 2mani e 2 piedi col turbo.. ma secondo me è gay. E le cartilagini del naso ormai le avrà consumate da tempo. Per carità, fatti suoi....... ;)
It's amazing how many people have been inspired by Vinnie. Astonishing musician.
I was there that day! Vinnie, Tony Williams, Will Calhoun and Keith. It changed my life! DC
This was literally one of the first things I found when I first got on the internet. So happy to see this clip again :)
Vinnie and Yamaha were the best combination, that snare drum has the perfect crack and those toms sound so full and luscious, with Vinnie's chops, the drums sounds godly, i wish Vinnie would go back, but i love Gretsch also
Gretsch is better :)
Nope
I was there that day! Changed my life 🥁😎👍DC

This guy is freaking soloing in 19/16! Like Frank Zappa's Keep it Greasy.
A true artist doing what he does best!
I really can't resist it even if I wanted to :)
I wish Vinnie still played Yamaha's, he was in his prime during the "Sting" years
holy mother of God! WHAT was THAT!?! "Amazing" doesn't seem enough to describe it.
that snare has such a nice crack to it.
Vinnie é foda demais.Muito fã desse cara!
Vinnie The Alien - awesome roll at 1.57
ohhhh my jodido dios q solo woooooooooooo me quito el sombrero

Man, I've got the complete version of this. There's a solo before this 19/16 solo/groove. Its Awesome!
when i was watching this i kinda "zoned out" for a bit if you see what i mean, and i realised something.. if youre just a general listener, not a drummer, you dont really pick up on WHY you like something, e.g. a song might have a really funky beat with loads of ghost notes etc, but lots of people wouldnt notice this - i think you really have to be a drummer to appreciate this kind of playing, whereas with steve gadd anyone can love it.. its the simple rhythm people love, not speed and 19/16..

He's one of them :P
beautiful snare sound
Vinnie is on the MEGADETH record THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED he is very versatile.

The one and only-Vinnie Colaiuta!!!!!
@steldrums87 Sure. I'll upload it soon. Its also from a Zildjian Promo Vid some guy gave to me years ago.
If someone transcribes this then I'll learn his solo. Even if it takes my months!
no, but you might want to check this one? ua-cam.com/video/tfHonSNFf54/v-deo.html
No offense, but there's no point in comparing Weckl and Chambers to Vinnie. Each is a master and each has their own particular style and we're lucky to be able to enjoy them all. I don't think it's possible to choose the 'best' drummer; I think they're all "bests."
I agree!!!!
Next time I see Dennis, I'll tell him rrdrums110 said to work on his swing "feel". hhaha
Classic:)
its a solo concept that he probably came up with as he was playing. a common practice amoung drummers. also, if you ask that "modern talent" who their drum hero's are vinnie's name would pop up a lot more than you'd think. we drummers 2day are only standing on the shoulders of giants like vinnie. vinnie(amoung others) str8 taught us young cat how 2 play without a single private lesson. theres no way 2 sound better than the guy you got it from.

The V-man ..... what a player !!!
I know some might not agree, but here it is anyway:
Vinnie's the best drummer in the world!
k thanks
Ok. Now that I've come back to this: From towards the end of 0:42 to the middle of 0:44 is the first time that I dig that 4,4,4,4,3 division.
Getting to REALLY like this!
any videos of this guy?
and "this dude" here btw is vinnie colaiuta.. and is more than just ok..yeah actually he is one of the best drummers in the world and of all time..
there is no drummer better than vinnie colaiuta living alive today.
anyone who thinks otherwise needs their brain checked.
Never gave a damn about drum solos before but this guy is in the company of Neil Peart, Stu Copeland, and others ( that I haven't discovered yet) in terms of technical profciency and pure balls.
I hope to the Lord Himself that those three dislikes were accidents.
as he explained later, it is "just" 7/8
Legend
marco minneman could do that. He specializes in odd times signatures but vinnie is still my favorite.
This isn't a fraction of Vinnie's capabilities. I think he's just blowing off a ton of crap. He's like that. Sometimes he just doesn't want to 'give'.
the master
i agree...
@sofakingrate man...feel the same way. I typically can't stand to hear people to say so and so is the best anything. But without apology I really can say that Vinnie is the best.
@steldrums87 just uploaded it. "Vinnie Colaiuta Zildjian DAy Scotland '94. Enjoy.
@timdrms - It's the original and now discontinued Maple Customs he's playing here. Small square gold lugs and thicker shells than the Absolutes, and better sound.
oh my god!!
i don't know why this drummer reminds me dave weckel, steve gadd. but he'es good this the first time i wacht a video from vinnie so that's opinion.
That's what i'm talkin' about

@timdrms
yes
Says Zildjian right on the cymbals
what about dennis chambers , and dave weckl?
Keep it greasy Vinnie.
definitely 19/16
Maybe he can ask mike stern if he can swing, or many of the jazz greats that has played with him
dave weckl and dennis chambers are both amazing drummers, but they don't have the time, feel and solidity that vinnie has. everything he plays, whether it be grooves or fills, etc, is super solid, clean and on time.

hits china just like jojo mayer or the other way around

should cheer you up a little bit.
but is he happy?
