they are all top musos. No one is better than the other....all this competetive stuff is a bit nursery school isn't it? Amazing musicians, be grateful you were alive when they were. Love you all x
Simon is one of my favourite drummers, just look at this, he doesn't need to play fast to do his work, it's amazing! I recomend you guys watch him with The Who (my favourite band of all time) at LA Amphy en '89, it kick asses!
I don't dispute that. Neil Peart was my primary inspiration to keep playing. I am just frustrated (still) that the only drummer people seem to be able to fathom is Neil Peart. There is so much greatness out there.
Multilingual and a musician. Good for you, man. That is more that many of us Americans can say. Keep an open mind and practice daily. Then maybe we'll be comparing you with the greats.
I always love the tuning on Simons kits! Incredible tone. He is one of the best tuners i have ever heard! As far as technique? WOW! He embodies it! I think you cant compare any drummer to another. They all have their own voice. Lars is a great player in his own right. How do you compare Philips to Colaiuta to Weckl to Cobham to Narada Michael Walden? All great players. In my humble opinion Kenward Dennard is a very dynamic player! Cant compare them.
Brian Blade was very entertaining! I love his style. You should look up Matthias Dangel for an introduction to extreme limb independence, it's pretty amazing.
@TheSilentManII yea speed some what does mean quality, and im 16 (btw, there is no good videos of him playing with the double bass, but if youve ever been to a concert you can here them and its almost perfect)
@kict951 Simon Phillips have been established as one of the 'real' greats for more than 30 years. And whilst I regard all the drummers you've listed very highly I think half of them are probably lower on the pecking order than Phillips. He has a vast array of work with numerous bands that he always brings his unique signature to. This vid doesn't present Simon at his best, but there are plenty of albums and live performances from way back that propel the music to a greater level because of SP.
@13Metallica24 oh no i know speed is necessary (for all instruments), its just not the be all end all, there are more important things to practice, speed comes in time, comfort and knowledge.
@ThomasRocksU Faked Justice? I don't think so... There was a rumor going around back then that the band threatened to bring in Dave Lombardo from Slayer to record Dyers Eve if Lars could not finish the whole song at the speed they wanted it.. It's Lars on the tune.. he worked it out.. Who even knows if the story is true.. I will say this.. I have never seen Lars play it live the way it was recorded.. Back in 89' it was not even on the setlists.. I saw that tour 3 times..
Simon rocks!! One of best around and certainly one of the most musical super drummers--- check out this solo by a huge Simon Phillips fan and the author of "The Book of Funk Beats- grooves for snare, bass and hihat" (this book has some very Simon-esque beats and fills- check it out!!) search: "DRUM SOLO IN 3 MOVEMENTS" on UA-cam
@TheSilentManII he didnt fake justice was back when lars was more of a drummer studio wise he is still acceptibly good today but live not so good...but in the 80s and early 90s he was pretty good on both areas
@josh0849 Some of the first double pedal? Let me get this straight, are you making the assertion that Ulrich was one of the first to incorporate double bass drumming? Surely not. It was in use well before Ulrich was even born. Appologies if this is not what you meant. I am certainly not talking shit about Lars, he is a very talented drummer, he is just not in Simon Phillips league, not many are.
dude i disagree. Take the live Toto album Livefields for example. phillips' playing on that has some of the biggest pocket i have ever heard in my life; it blows me away every time i hear it. his time is rock solid and he makes everything feel so good, whether it's simple fills or huge solos. now i'll admit in this vid something's off, maybe he had a bad day. and maybe i haven't heard enough Simon, but in the live Toto albums i have the dude has some of the best time i've ever heard.
please tell me your not talking to me...because i can play 3 different time signatures at once look up polymetric and it's the second video...i can't get the left foot pattern because i don't have a jam block kick...i know my samba's and songo's, along with metric modulating single strokes, all the parradidle variations and that jazz ride rhythm(i feel stupid for forgetting what the rhythm is called)polyrhythms, soloing on top of ostinato's and playing ostinato's with alternating foot patterns
@13Metallica24 Do you play drums or are you just a metallica fan? If you are a drummer I am assuming you are a young one with much to learn. Put it this way, if you keep playing the drums, you will be able to play Metallicas stuff fluently a LONG time before you can play Simon Phillips stuff fluently.
lol, that's PLYometrics, polymeters are real, and im not gloating, i hate people that brag...i was simply defending my talent, which someone on here was trying to say that i suck(don't know if it was directed towards me, and that's why i asked)no one truly cares about you *insert immature face thingy
Its impossible to compare lars with simon . simon plays in the same category that colaiuta or weckl , lars plays in the same category of poison´s rikky rockett.
@Xenithil yes but they only play doble pedal hit the toms at like stupids he have technique and they repeat the same thing all time and the concerts they do the same solo simon not he always do a diferent thing
how you can compare simon with phillips lars never gonna be a drummer like simon i say he is one of the bests drummers in the world and i dont understand why the people only knows lars ulrich, joey jordison, mike portnoy and the rev but if you wanna a good drummer you can listen dave weckl, john blackweel they are good talking about skills and technique
@13Metallica24 Lars is a good drummer no doubt. However comparing him favourably to Simon Philips is like comparing a Mustang to a Ferrari. Just like the ferrari, Philips is in another league I'm afraid.
ya know what kills me about message boards and debates such as these? The know the only guy that is not including his opinion on the Neil Peart thing right now? Neil peart! why? because he is out there either making a substancial living or he is out there working in his studio to give all of you something to impose your precious opinions about. Never before have I seen so many drummers dedicated to instillling their opinions of things and not taking creidt for their own playing gp practice
@13Metallica24 c Lars used to be good? Dang and I missed it. I must have been in the bathroom. I will give him this, he is the closest thing to talent in Metalica, but "Good" not so much. comparing lars to Simon Phillips is like comparing a turd in the swimming pool to an aircraft carrier.
hahaha. i'm unco on drums. lol plyometrics, you are entirely correct sorry... i'm not sure why ppl get up in other ppls grills... i apologise. Strange distorted noobile face straight back at YOU! :) jk
I find it amazing that all anyone can compare any drummer to is Neil Peart. It shows that you lack a knowledge of many other great drummers. Neil Peart isn't even 4-limb independent.
Jeff Porcaro was the man but Simon is doing a good work with Toto. Obviosly Simon has less groove than Porcaro , But who has more groove than Steve ? .
what are you talking about? That was a completely pointless rambling that made no sense. for one thing, dennis chambers is a pretty meaty guy, secondly, since when are drummers judged by how much meat they have on them and what size sticks they use?
@13Metallica24 Lars isn't very good, metallica are my favourite band but I still understand that all lars does is play the hi-hat, he loves it and that's what he does. I can play Dyers eve on drums, it's really quite easy... But this solo is boring YAWWWN
Keith Moon is the shittiest I've seen. But they both made it work for them. They go along without giving a hoot about technique. Even employing improper harmful mechanics. Do not imitate those two just enjoy. I'm sure there are several dozen punk drummers who are "shitty" too.
This clip is amazing ive been after it for ages. one of my all time grooves.
Yea totally! this guy is sick! his rhythm and syncopation is just awesome! and how he messes with time signatures and things, is total class!
The most creative metronome in the world. YES!
Spot on dude! Simon's drumming is very musical. He always displays a great feel and sound. In a nutshell the total package!!
they are all top musos. No one is better than the other....all this competetive stuff is a bit nursery school isn't it? Amazing musicians, be grateful you were alive when they were. Love you all x
Man, I have this on VHS and haven't been able to watch it in years... My first time seeing Simon play, and he's left an impression on me ever since!
I always love the tuning on Simons kits! Incredible tone. He is one of the best tuners i have ever heard! As far as technique? WOW! He embodies it!
Simon is one of my favourite drummers, just look at this, he doesn't need to play fast to do his work, it's amazing!
I recomend you guys watch him with The Who (my favourite band of all time) at LA Amphy en '89, it kick asses!
Ya the Who Tommy tour with Simon behind the kit was the best live show I ever saw.
este man es un maestro de maestros que sabor
Excellent drummer whoever says this guy ain't got no soul needs a reality check!
What!? This is a1,000% BEST drummer in the WHOLE WORLD!!!!!!
I don't dispute that. Neil Peart was my primary inspiration to keep playing. I am just frustrated (still) that the only drummer people seem to be able to fathom is Neil Peart. There is so much greatness out there.
you're my idol bro
Multilingual and a musician. Good for you, man. That is more that many of us Americans can say. Keep an open mind and practice daily. Then maybe we'll be comparing you with the greats.

I am a drummer, & i can say: Wow !!!!
Dude, Simon had his own jazz band and has released albums in that genre aswell.
@tjanusz3 spot on. Why is everyone talking about Lars? He is not even in the same league as Simon.
Brian Blade was very entertaining! I love his style. You should look up Matthias Dangel for an introduction to extreme limb independence, it's pretty amazing.
HE IS MASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!
and Santa for Christmas i want THAT drumset. =)
@TheSilentManII yea speed some what does mean quality, and im 16 (btw, there is no good videos of him playing with the double bass, but if youve ever been to a concert you can here them and its almost perfect)
awesome!
100% agree dude!!

simon eres bueno , eres muyyyyyyyyyyyyy bueno
@josh0849 exactly, thank you
@13Metallica24 oh no i know speed is necessary (for all instruments), its just not the be all end all, there are more important things to practice, speed comes in time, comfort and knowledge.
there are some exceptions with blastbeat drummers, like derek roddy, he has good 4-way coordination, and he can groove and play jazz
@josh0849 Man metallica is one of my favourite bands but get the facts right before you talk, Louie Bellson literally invented the double bass drum
O MELHOR DOS MELHORES (ROGÉRIO PANTERA)
I love this solo!
yeah!!!
I agree aswell
you got that right
The end with the fast stuff reminds me of terry bozzio's Klangfarben Melodie
@ThomasRocksU Faked Justice? I don't think so... @ThomasRocksU This might be a dumb question, but what exactly do u mean when u say that he "faked" it?
@josh0849 Some of the first double pedal? Let me get this straight, are you making the assertion that Ulrich was one of the first to incorporate double bass drumming?
Surely not. It was in use well before Ulrich was even born. Appologies if this is not what you meant.
I am certainly not talking shit about Lars, he is a very talented drummer, he is just not in Simon Phillips league, not many are.
The only thing that lars and simon have in common are tama drums. PERIOD =)
tasteful
@jakesimmons815 yea and you can also play as fast as a three year old and call it a drum solo....so as i said speed does some what mean quality
dude i disagree.

@13Metallica24
Your kidding, right? Lar's 'drumming by numbers' Ulrich.
I don´t realy know, but i think they´re called Octobans
in what genre...death metal, i highly doubt that, i'll be happy to get proven wrong
You can tell Macro Minnemann got a lot of influance from Simon Phillips.
1:29 muscles!!!!
@SharkyJaws12 My bad. Sorry haha

Its impossible to compare lars with simon . simon plays in the same category that colaiuta or weckl , lars plays in the same category of poison´s rikky rockett.

@Xenithil yes but they only play doble pedal hit the toms at like stupids he have technique and they repeat the same thing all time and the concerts they do the same solo simon not he always do a diferent thing
octobans
travis barker
how you can compare simon with phillips lars never gonna be a drummer like simon i say he is one of the bests drummers in the world
and i dont understand why the people only knows lars ulrich, joey jordison, mike portnoy and the rev but if you wanna a good drummer you can listen dave weckl, john blackweel they are good talking about skills and technique
@13Metallica24
Lars is a good drummer no doubt. However comparing him favourably to Simon Philips is like comparing a Mustang to a Ferrari.
Just like the ferrari, Philips is in another league I'm afraid.
Sorry Jeff hahah
i was joking dude! yeahhhhh! you dont know how to joke
ya know what kills me about message boards and debates such as these? The know the only guy that is not including his opinion on the Neil Peart thing right now? toto's
hahaha. i'm unco on drums. lol plyometrics, you are entirely correct sorry... i'm not sure why ppl get up in other ppls grills... i apologise. Strange distorted noobile face straight back at YOU! :) jk
Watch George Kollias, Derek Roddy, Inferno from Behemoth, or even JJ from slipknot. And watch me, I'm better.
Does no one know Lars faked and justice for all?
I find it amazing that all anyone can compare any drummer to is Neil Peart. It shows that you lack a knowledge of many other great drummers. Neil Peart isn't even 4-limb independent.

I think you have no idea abour drums .
Octobans
@TouchingYou Then does that mean that I can say that Lars Ulrich sucks?
what are you talking about? That was a completely pointless rambling that made no sense. for one thing, dennis chambers is a pretty meaty guy, secondly, since when are drummers judged by how much meat they have on them and what size sticks they use?
@13Metallica24 Lars isn't very good, metallica are my favourite band but I still understand that all lars does is play the hi-hat, he loves it and that's what he does.
I can play Dyers eve on drums, it's really quite easy...
But this solo is boring
YAWWWN
@13Metallica24 Lars is nothing compare to great drummers like Simon ... he plays like a 15 years old dude.
ya but lars gets the girls so he is better
Lars?....please....study your drummers a little closer. Simon is a true legend where as Lars only plays for a band that is a legend.
this guys good, dont get me wrong, but IN MY OPINION, lars ulrich is better....i mean listen to any drum track before the black album....
a la mierda q es bueno
Keith Moon is the shittiest I've seen. But they both made it work for them. They go along without giving a hoot about technique. Even employing improper harmful mechanics.
