    The fills are incredible, naturally, but it's that groove that Vinnie lays down that blows my mind.
    The consistency of the dynamics in those hi hat barks throughout the whole song is inhuman.😅

    Vinnie is truly a treasure. Got to chat with him back stage at a Sting show years ago. I had hosted Sting's keyboardist David Sancious for numerous shows up here in Maine and was invited back stage to the Bangor Waterfront show. Vinnie walks up tp me and says "Ed right"? That threw me! He told me he really appreciated what we did for David and said he would gladly be a part of a show I might put together! I thanked him of course, but admitted I was too small time to host anything of that calibur. I mean, he could fill a big room on his name alone. Hell of an offer though! Then Sting's guitarist Dominic Miller posed for a pic with me and my family. Vinnie took the picture. That was a surreal and wonderful 1/2 hour of my life :)

      It's funny you should mention that. The jazz drummer Ralph Peterson in one of his instructional videos on You Tube said that learning different instruments made him a better drummer. One of the other instruments he plays is trumpet - he's very good on that too.

      @@RhymesWithCarbon Agreed. While guitarists and singers are notoriously envious of other players, we drummers usually do not care about the negative crap. We are likely to compliment someone, when they play something nice, no matter what instrument is being played.

      I'm sure if VINNE sat in without a rehearsal he would read off straight away, great sound the band {trombones}

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 3 роки тому +1

      @@mortonthomasbayliss9177 I'm sure he read that straight away with no rehearsal actually. If you look at this face and pay attention, he was reading the whole, he even counted a bar out loud. He was very careful with certain parts, only giving it his all during the fills. Other than that, he simplified his played a whole lot, especially during the part where he played snare+floor tom on 2 and 4 only. Surely there is a better level of drum arrangement here than in most big bands, but still, he decidedly kept it extremely safe.
      I would be you serious money Vinnie *was actually sight-reading*. It's not the hardest big-band piece in the world. I couldn't sight read it that good, but he kept a lot of silence on purpose, to not waste anyone's time in case the arranger wouldn't be happy with something more complex, and it serves the song. Only his fills were 90-95% of his ability, and that's fine, that's great. His timing wasn't the best here either. You can tell a lot of them are sight-reading, the guitarist too. Big band stuff is *mental*, you spend more time annotating sheet music you're gonna sight-read than actually rehearsing, because you need to sync 15-20 people. It's a LOT of sight-reading and the budgets are nowhere near those of a classical orchestra, and not proportional, even if it's much smaller than a full-size symphonic orchestra of course. Vinnie did a great job as always. He was professional. Those fills were unmistakable and the rest was what to expect of a good studio pro :) Not his best performance but he's always getting the job done and driving the band.

    Another drummer here came for Vinne, but satay because I was so impressed by the whole band, extremely inspiring.

    I wonder if those fills were on the chart, or did it just indicate to fill two bars with cool stuff. Also, Vinnie really knows how a crash cymbal should be played. Hit it gently and moderately and let it do what it was designed to do - sing. Great to watch this. The whole orchestra was enjoyable.

      Hi Randy- The fills are not on the chart, they are all Vinnie. Thanks for your comment!

      It helps to have really good cymbals that you don't have to coax the sound out of.

      Vinnie would have still sounded great using trash can lids.

      Vinnie did use that fill before on an Allan Holdsworth album. Can't recall which. I prefer it in this context though and it sounds much crisper. A drummers wet dream, this ;).

    Wow..... that's just too good. Everyone involved/ playing is so laid back it's ridiculous, (apart from the guy in the room who just couldnt hold it together... understandably!). I wonder if they actually know how good it makes those listening feel. Thankyou!!

    Mr. Colaiuta is such a versatile drummer, he's able to fit in ensembles like this, and play with Barbra Streisand, Joe Satriani or Megadeth effortlessly.
