Good catch Rob. It reminds me this reaction in the recording booth after a crazy fill from Simon Philipps ua-cam.com/video/ipboKxvokmw/v-deo.html#t=01m10s
Yes, i came here because of Vinnie and he nailed this recording of course. All this musicians nailed it. But this trombone player, dude... what an amazing solo!
The fills are incredible, naturally, but it's that groove that Vinnie lays down that blows my mind. The consistency of the dynamics in those hi hat barks throughout the whole song is inhuman.😅
Vinnie is truly a treasure. Got to chat with him back stage at a Sting show years ago. I had hosted Sting's keyboardist David Sancious for numerous shows up here in Maine and was invited back stage to the Bangor Waterfront show. Vinnie walks up tp me and says "Ed right"? That threw me! He told me he really appreciated what we did for David and said he would gladly be a part of a show I might put together! I thanked him of course, but admitted I was too small time to host anything of that calibur. I mean, he could fill a big room on his name alone. Hell of an offer though! Then Sting's guitarist Dominic Miller posed for a pic with me and my family. Vinnie took the picture. That was a surreal and wonderful 1/2 hour of my life :)
It's funny you should mention that. The jazz drummer Ralph Peterson in one of his instructional videos on You Tube said that learning different instruments made him a better drummer. One of the other instruments he plays is trumpet - he's very good on that too.
@@RhymesWithCarbon Agreed. While guitarists and singers are notoriously envious of other players, we drummers usually do not care about the negative crap. We are likely to compliment someone, when they play something nice, no matter what instrument is being played. 🤝

I not sure how many times I've watched this now. Vinnie is undescribable to me. The trombone stirs up some serious emotion and you can feel the admiration for him during that solo. Just an utterly fantastic piece of work.
I’ve been a huge fan of John ever since I heard him with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette.. amazing guitarist. But Peter… he is a god among men. For me, among the greatest drummers if not _the_ greatest of all time. Thanks for sharing these guys with those who may have never heard them before.

He was very careful with certain parts, only giving it his all during the fills. Other than that, he simplified his played a whole lot, especially during the part where he played snare+floor tom on 2 and 4 only. Surely there is a better level of drum arrangement here than in most big bands, but still, he decidedly kept it extremely safe. I would be you serious money Vinnie *was actually sight-reading*.
