it's been a few weeks since I got this machine, I've watched hundreds of videos and my milk never comes out correctly, i know my technique is not good but I also thought it maybe coz i am using lactose free milk. What a great and informative video. Although, I didn't get all the science behind it, I got the basics. My husband and I have a Vibienne Italian Espresso Machine and when I make coffees for ourselves or when we have guests, they always remark how beautiful the coffee. Of course, the coffee beans help; we have Mojo and it makes a lovely cup or so. Thank you so very much!

Great tips and video! One thing that has helped me is to actually measure 200ml of milk, which is to your point of keeping the amount of milk consistent. Especially when you are learning and have such a short time to think about all the other things you need to do to get the milk just right. Your "fails" at latte art are still impressive. Doc, I've been owning an espresso machine (D-L-----) for several years now and my latte art.. is still terrible. Far from your troubleshooting examples (they're not so bad!). I actually gave up and filed under wrong choices in life (or poverty EHEHEHE). But hey, I've been trying recently (and making 0 progress) and found this video of yours (thank you UA-cam for recommending relevant videos this time!). It's so detailed that it's almost a sin to still not make it AHAHA. New subscriber here ^_^ keep on making good videos (and wow, your gears, girl~!)

This coffee hobby has really been soothing for me.. like a 10-minute escape to reality.. especially latte art it can be frustrating sometimes but every day is another day and another cup of coffee you can practice with. :) one thing it taught me is to not dwell on my mistakes, take note and correct it on my next try :) like you at first the only art i can pour is a blob >.< dont lose heart on something you enjoy and love :)

How many seconds do you aerate for? I’ve heard 3-6 on the BBE, but I’ve also seen a video of someone doing it for 25 seconds and the milk came out really good for latte art 😩. Send help
Was trying to get better foam before I found your video. Did exactly as you did with the milk level and positioning and went through almost half a gallon of milk and eight or so cups of runny useless foam. Went back to just winging it with the tip at the very side of the pitcher, lots of aeration followed by a deep submerge, and got nice foam that made a rose shape. I don’t know what kind of funky milk you’re using, but my 2% will absolutely not foam properly with your method.
Hi so sorry to hear that ...i think this technique is not that effective with 2% milk as im using my usual FULL FAT milk in this video... it will definitely lead to runny milk if you follow it (i will add it to my title to avoid confusion). What i do with milk alternatives or with milk with much lower fat content is almost the same as your technique wherein i make more foam than usual (so definitely higher level than the video) then submerge the tip. thanks for pointing that out :)

in my case I don't waste any coffee and milk :) I make one hot latte for my husband then use the rest of the milk for my iced latte :) I guess my practice is 1-2 cups max per day depending if we have night duty :) if you have a smaller pitcher like a 350 ml may be less milk will be wasted coz I think the level of the surface of the milk with the tip is important to create finer bubbles ;)
I am using Barista Carl's Blend for practice too (same machine as well). However I found out that BCB is a lot more tolerant of steaming mistakes and flows in the cup quite better than milk. I have a much harder time achieving the right consistency with full milk 😐 Is BCB holding me back from getting better at steaming?

Do you mind sharing the second pitchers you are transferring your steamed milk into before pouring the latte art? They looked bigger in size (ideal) for pouring, I'd guess at least 20oz in volume?
I'm currently not using the 3 hole tip, because going back and fort with the. 1hole and 3 hole is like going back to square 1 of milk steaming :p i take time to adjust and right now im comfortable with the 1 hole tip so I might be using it for a while then try the 3 hole again :)))
so for the sound, when the milk level is at my desired level i dunk the tip and make sure that i hear no sound at all (no more chirping or paper tearing sound) and i only hear the pump, with that you are sure that you are now at mixing stage of the process and no longer creating microfoam, then i just wait for it to go up to temperature then stop. (i hope this answers your question >.
@@CTSHOYT oh i think the sound you're mentioning is the other sound that it makes when the milk is overheated already I think i have that on the other video :) it makes a muffled screeching sound again (even the wand is submerged) and the vortex of the milk is a bit less

However, i still find it difficult to get the perfect steamed milk. i have tried to follow, but when i tried to pour into my coffee, the foam is all at the end of the pouring and quite thick. What's the mistake here? was it that i do it too fast (less than a min) ? i have learnt the latte art last time, i can make the latte art with the guidance of my teacher, then now i have my own coffee machine (Breville Barista pro), so i wanna practice it again at home. please anybody help me to advice.. thank you in advance!
Is it normal (1) that it makes this "tik, tik, tik..." sound during steaming and is it normal that (2) so much water comes out of the steam wand? I bought the impress recently and am a bit worried about both these things.
for the stock breville milk jug i find that filling it up to the v (or half way of the spout) gives me optimal results, when i put less milk i tend to create bigger bubbles because of the distance between the tip and the milk... I tried a smaller pitcher for steaming for example a 350ml pitcher rather than the stock breviile 480ml and i still fill until half of the spout which approximately is 200ml and I get the same result with just little to no excess :) hope this helps

I think when u hear the loud screeching it means the tip is too deep, try adjusting the level to be just barely submerged…then turn on the steam the force will push the milk
What if after inserting the wand to the right level and position, turning it on - GENTLY - and then FULL, you get LARGE bubbles breaking the surface - instead of the FINE, DENSE foam you're supposed to get?
@@jakobw135 I'm not :) If theres large bubbles it means the tip of the wand to too far from the milk and not too close try bringing the milkjug a bit up (fully submerge the tip) then slowly adjust by bring the jug down

Approximately how long are you steaming the milk? Ours are lukewarm.
Where did you get that beautiful cup?
the cups i used here are from loveramics (200ml white and 250ml pink) and the ones without the handle are from fellow (monty cups cappucino cups)

Are you using the double or single wall portafilter? What pitcher are you using?

when you said sumerge the tip until the line. What line are you referring to? The horizontal line where the tip joined the rest of the steam wand?
