It may not mean a lot to you but it really should...
I'm from Australia I'm a qualified mechanic and I work on Porsche race cars for a living and all I can say to you is yes you are doing the right thing.
So porsches ( early models ) made for weather below 5°c
      Everything fades.
And honestly that's what we use.
Im honestly astonished you figured it out.

Also sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you are spray painting wrong..
NEVER START THE SPRAY WHILE FACING THE OBJECT !
start the spray over to the side and move across it.
You might get lucky and not get
" rich spots " of paint.
But trust me it's really good practise.
Aim completely away from the product you are spraying, press the button
      Then move across it
Then remove you finger and repeat.
      👍🏻
It's up to you to take this advice or not.
But it's professional and very correct advice so it would really benefit you to listen.
(and I don't give people advice that I don't respect)

Thanks for this. My wiper arms were rusty and what little paint remained was badly faded. I would have missed some key steps -- roughing the old paint, cleaning with lacquer thinner, and using high heat spray paint (I went with Rustoleum High Heat for grills and such) -- if I hadn't watched this first.

I did some semi-gloss on wipers, didn't prep right, it was just to arrest some rust on a 25 year old pick wiper arms. That said, anything remotely glossy can reflect sun and sometimes its into your own eyes.
I am going to look for matte or something non-glossy, but if I have to, I'll do the semi-gloss, just worried about reflections.
I am runing to auto parts store now, will see if anything heat/uv resistant is available in non-glossy.
    Good video.
Shouldn't we mask off the spring internals and not paint them? I figure to mask it off, then give it just a drop of weather resistant oil or silicone at each hinge point.

I used rustoleum paint on my 98 honda wipers. Been about three years and they still look great.

That’s some good paint too. I stay away from the cheap dollar store brands.

I would have put those wipers on a sheet of plywood with the cardboard. That way you can pull the plywood out and over the table and spin it like a "Lazy Susan". But thanks for the tips.

I’ve bought new ones before that the paint didn’t hold up a year. So far I’ve been having good luck with this method.

Great video! I plan on painting my Jeep YJ wiper arms with this week with the engine enamel paint that you recommended. The lift gate hinges on my Wrangler hard top also get eaten up by the sun out here in San Diego so heck, I might try the same enamel paint on them as well. 🤙🏻

Thanks, that's clearly presented for less-than-experts like me. Other than more light coats, is there anything you'd do differently if the wiper arms are sanded down to bare metal?

    • @MikesGarage96
      @MikesGarage96  2 роки тому +3

I’d prime them first if it’s down to bare metal.

Any issue putting these back on in the correct position? I want to do this but concerned they'll be off their correct position when I put them back on.

It's not heat that is the problem, it abrasion, they get sand blasted fast.

I would think to use Matt black so there is no reflection off the arms

next time move all other objects outta the way so those dont get messed up with paint particles, like the flashlight and the headphone.

    • @MikesGarage96
      @MikesGarage96  5 років тому

Oh believe me anything laying out like that are no good. Just part of my junk collection. Headphones were junk. The flashlight the batteries corroded in it and rusted themselves in there. Went into the scrap metal bucket. I now order Procell batteries for my good flashlights to prevent that from happening again. Dollar store batteries are junk. Tried everything to get them out with no luck.
