While the Motorola CPS software and cable allow you to access many advanced features as well as performing central programing of multiple radios, it's very useful to know how to program the basic features on the radio itself.
The manual makes it look over-complicated but it's actually very simple. Hopefully this video will help show how simple it is.

This is very usefull tutorial, thanks for help from Poland ;)
Thank you for this tutorial! Got my XT420 just today! Looks and feels nice! Haven't tested it yet.
Are you satisfied with your device? I’m waiting for my XT420 now. Just ordered it yesterday. Actually I’m using a Midland BR03 and a Team IPX5. The Team is way ahead the Midland when it comes to range and modulation.
@@2beer_OR_NOT_2beer It's one of the most popular radios out there mainly because it's all you need for communication between people. I really like it and I hope your happy with it.
@@practicallyVG It’s probably the best PMR446 device out there. I’ve ordered another one and sold all other radios. 👍 Motorola is still worth the high price.
You answered more precisely the question I asked you on the video of the xt660d: indeed with the xt660d you don't really need to have a programming cable. After a lot of questions, I will finally be able to buy it ;-) Thank you for your answers ! PS: I think it will be more simple with xt660d than the xt460 because there screen and more buttons.
Good to know. It was your questions that reminded me to do this video. It's one I've been meaning to do for a while. FYI, I have 2 x XT660d radios for sale if you're interested and are UK based.
@@tdcattech Thank you but I live in France ;) I plan to buy it on Amazon because it's much cheaper than on specialized sites.
No worries. Enjoy the 660d!
@@tdcattech Finally I bought it on Amazon France. Thank you for all ^^
Nice alreleady got one to use some times I go on different channels.
The XT460 I have can be programmed in a similar fashion and while it has a LCD screen, unlike the XT420, which makes programming somewhat easier you need the CPS cable to program the more advanced settings. I have it set up that the first eight channels are programmed with their DCS codes and the second set of eight channels have no DCS programmed. With Channel Alias Names set the screen really helps in distinguishing which channel I'm on. BTW the CPS cable is a pricey bit of kit if you only have a single radio, if you own a couple or a lot of radios it may be a good investment.
Yes, I own a few CPS cables for different radios. It always hurts to pay £60+ for a cable. Sounds like you have your XT programmed in exactly the same way as me. 1-8 CSS of 107.2 for personal use and 9-16 no CTCSS/DCS. :-)
What earpiece would be good for the XT420? I prefer a mic and earbbud single wire. I've been trying to look but can't find anything. Could you maybe help?
Great video! I have a question..I have to connect my xt420 to my hytera power 446..how can I proceed? Honestly I do not want to change anything on my hyt.
Thanks a lot for your help
Really get sir. How to connect gp340 and xir p3688. We are using channel 6
I have an XT460, which as you know is the same as the 420 but with a screen. I assume if the CTCSS code is set to “000” it’s off.
Hello. I don't suppose you know how to activate the vox with or without an accessory? Thanks
Thanks a lot
Hi! I read that this radio station can be opened up to 2 watts in power!
Can you tell me how to do it?
Did they say on the Radioscanner website that it could be done somehow? The question is how?
Thanks for relp, but it is possible to change the language radio xt 420 ,thank you
Updated: with the cable cps, I added the new 8 channels to the radio!
Hey there do you know how to turn on and off the roger beep ? i need help with it thanks !
Not without the software. You need a cable and CPS for this.
Can you send a Viedeo from the XT420 Roger Beeps when you push the PTT Button. Thank you
Hi i got a motorola XTNi, how do i change the frequency on that
thanks :)
Thanks for the pmr446 videos, they are most useful. Does your XT420 do the full 16 channels or only the original 8?
Just the original 8. It has 16 channel positions but this is only to allow the use of multiple CTCSS or DCS codes on the same channel.
@@tdcattech Thanks for the reply. Is their a newer version as most adverts say 8 channel but on this Motorola specification pdf, found here - www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.motorolasolutions.com/content/dam/msi/docs/EA_Collaterals/ENGLISH/BusinessPMR446/XT400_Series_DataSheet_ENG_lor.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjZsf-amZvpAhU9UhUIHdT9Ai4QFjABegQIBxAC&usg=AOvVaw2Vyyupsfnz-W050CY0Qe1_
It suggests that it is 16 channel programmable up to the max frequency required for a true 16 channel working.
You're quite right. It appears they have thankfully updated the spec. All I would say is make sure that anyone buying these, make sure you know you're getting a model with the latest revision otherwise you'll be stuck to 8 like me!
@@tdcattech I wonder if your 8 channel radio could be reconfigured to 16 if you had access to the computer programming. Just a thought. Thanks for the videos. I am looking forward to the 90k range test in the future if you are ever able to do it. Regards John.
@@redjohn20001 I think these radios are 8 channel by default, see the fine print. My radio has a sticker on the inside with Russian text that I think says "made in malaysia". In Russia only 8 channels are permitted by law. This makes this radio suitable for the Russian market I guess. Perhaps one would need the CPS cable to reconfigure it and unlock its full potential?
Is thisnthe same programming steps for the cp200 motorola.
How do you call another radio / alert them you want to speak?
Is it possible to get ptt sound to this
Hi I’ve just purchased a pair of XT460’s and I’m trying to work out how to put the roger beep on them and I can’t figure out how to do it. Can you help!!??
With the XT420, you need to use the CPS software for this (together with the Motorola programming cable). I haven't used the XT460 but it may be the same for this product.
@@tdcattech Hi thanks so much for the quick reply back. I've looked at the cables but they're so expensive. You don't happen to have one do you? Thanks so much for your help. ( after doing some research, apparently it's the same cable for both )
How do I connect my Motorola walkie talkie with my Baofeng walkie talkie. My Motorola is similar to one on the video but it's smaller. It doesn't have any number keys, no screen. Meanwhile my Baofeng does have those. So how can I connect the Motorola with my Baofeng? Is there any way??
Love the voice 2:49
Where is the cheapest place to buy the XT460?
👍🏼😀
Hello there, thank you for the video! Would like ask, what is the target of button SB1 - monitoring? And why this function turns on by turning on the radio , I cannot received anyone, I must push SB1 always after turning on the radio to receive anyone. Maybe is possible to unprogram this function at all? Thank you in advance.
Are you familiar with squelch CTCSS frequencies/codes? I guess that your radio is programmed so that to open the squelch, the other radios will need to be programmed in the same way. I did a video on how to reprogram your radio without a cable or software. ua-cam.com/video/i4KIe_WmPs0/v-deo.html
Many thanks, it works, I just didn't know that from factory it comes with pre-programmed on subchanel 1.
is possible to change the language
Hi, l have a XT420. How can l change the channel frequency ?
The frequencies are locked into the radio. It’s a PMR446 radio so it will only operate on those frequencies. You can change the channel allocation. So you can make every position from 1-16 be channel 1 if you wanted. This is useful if you need to use different CTCSS/DCS tones.
@@tdcattech Hello. I'm from Ukraine, and now we're at war with Russia...
For military needs, it is necessary to change the frequencies on the Motorola XT420 channels, please tell me without the hkkn4027 cable is it possible to do this? or maybe there is a diagram of how to assemble the hkkn4027 cable ?!
Help save Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!
How to program Motorola Xir P6600i?
Buenos días, ¿Cómo se cambia el idioma?
what does mean by chanels in walkie talkie
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PMR446
Thanks l bought one and he can't get it to work I have not got min from him yet
Is AES-256 encryption available for this radio?
Good video. However, I don't understand how do you know which frequency is on the channel.
It's a bit silly really as it's not frequency at all. If it says 1, then it's set to PMR446 channel 1 (446.00625MHz). This section should be called channel, not frequency. I'm just not sure why you would want the physical channel switch position of 01 to be set to anything other than channel 1.
Do those have roger beeps
You can program them to have roger beeps, yes but that has to be done using software rather than on the radio as per this video.
How can I set the roger beep?
Pretty sure you need CPS for that. ☹️
@@tdcattech I read on the internet that you can do it with the programming mode in the xt420, but I’m not shure.
Anyway, where can I download the software?
What frequencies does motorola use?
These radios are PMR446 so they use those fixed frequencies - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PMR446
huo is kilometres for dis I m ready pie
😁
Hi
My radio does this by itself at work, how?? It does so in the middle of the night, creepy as f..k
Update: finally able to use full PMR range.
See replies.
_____________
Absolute disgrace that the XT420 doesn’t offer the full PMR446 range…
Never would have expected something shabby like that from Motorola of all brands?!
please tell me there is an excellent reason for this?
Or even better that I am mistaken?
When this radio was released, CH9 to CH16 weren’t legal for use as part of PMR446. The Motorola website suggests that this radio does now support these channels but it’s not 100% clear.
@@tdcattech
Well, there seems hope then!
Thank you for the reply!
Finally an update:
After talking to Motorola directly I was able to get a CPS license key that allows me to use the full PMR range.
I don't know why they make us jump through such hoops, but at least it is not impossible to gain access to what honestly speaking should be the absolute bare minimum standard.
But yeah, now I am in love with my XT420.
@@-----REDACTED----- I tried to contact the Motorola support as you did, but the first level support won’t consider any request from direct customer but only redirected me to official resellers, nice !
These resellers either don’t care or don’t even know that a free license can open the 8 extra frequencies.
Since the CPS license you obtained is certainly not transferable could you send me a radio profile you created with your software including the 16 frequencies ?
Motorola makes it impossible for users to enjoy their products, I can’t understand why…
Thank you for your help :)
