      what those code do is lock two radios together and no other radio out side
      your two can talk to you and by the way we can only hear you SO
      as far as I can see there worthless mean nothing the radio would
      IF thay did not put them in and a 5 watt radio talking to another 5 watt
      radio with out a repeater which would have you 20 miles down the road

    1. As said, privacy tones are misnomer. They have nothing to do with privacy issue. Having a receiving radio with code "0", or being decoded by a SDR, any FM transmission can be decoded.
    2. Privacy tones entitled by natural numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. are not reliable and sometimes not interoperable. Different radio manufacturers may use different actual frequencies (CTCSS) or octal codes (DCS) for their respective brands. For example, Motorola radios may use 69.3 Hz as privacy tone #1 while another manufacturer may use something different. The main point is to match the frequency/octal code of the privacy tones.
    3. Always set the same privacy tone on the receiving end as the transmitting end to avoid hearing interference/transmission from other privacy tones. One exception is that there is no straight privacy tone for the transmission and everybody uses a random tone, and you, as a receiving member, would like to receive as many transmission as you can.

    Very well done, I was going to purchase these but unsure how to work with other FRS radios -- THANKs! One quick question can you change the privacy codes on the channels in which it has been already programmed, or are those essentially fixed? thanks again!

    • @AdventureCruiser
      @AdventureCruiser  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you, I appreciate the complement.
      When you set a privacy tone for the first 22 channels, those privacy tones are set in memory until you remove them. For example channel 8 will always have the tone you set even if you change channels. You will see CT in the top of the display. You cannot change the privacy tone in the rest of the channels (as far as I know).
      There are essentially two ways to use a privacy code. The first is simply to match the channel number between two Rocky Talkie radios. The second is to press and hold the CT button below the push to talk button. Then cycle through the options until you match the code of another radio. The manual Rocky Talkies provides explains this in detail.
      I hope this helps.

    Here in the U.S., the only radios that you can legally use for GMRS must be Part 95A certified and for FRS, Part 95B certified. You are prohibited from using a ham radio or other radios that can be tuned to other bands. Commercial radios are kind of a gray area but they are not to be adjusted for transmitting from the front panel which is intentionally done to prevent users from operating out of band. I know of someone who spent 7 years in federal prison because he was fooling around with a commercial radio and managed to interfere with public safety. I would recommend only using certified equipment for the service you wish to use.
    The rules were updated in 2017 and as you pointed out FRS can now use 2 watts ERP (Effective Radiated Power) on FRS for Channels 1-7 and channels 15-22 but only .5 watts on channels 8-14. The only reason to use the low power channels might be for stealth reasons so others can not copy your signal and the target receiving station is very close. Even at 2 watts (or 5 watts) the range can be very limited, sometimes less than a mile depending upon obstructions.
    Licensed GMRS users can operate on the same channels as FRS if they have an HT form factor radio but must abide by the .5 watts on cannels 8-14. They are allowed to use up to 5 watts ERP on channels 1-7 and most are designed similarly for channels 15-22. If you are using a base or mobile type GMRS radio, you can operate up to 50 watts output (not ERP), on channels 15-22, and 5 watts ERP on 1-7 but you can not operate on 8-14. Since you can use detachable antennas and the antennas can be at significant heights and have gain, such as at base stations, this greatly increases range, even between a base and mobile or FRS. With my base GMRS radio, with a 40 foot tower and gain antenna, I have easily talked to FRS users nearly 10 miles away if they are along the ridge. Of course GMRS can also use repeaters that extend range much, much farther, IF you happen to be lucky and have a repeater in the area.
    To make it clear, the only reason for the privacy tones is so that you don't have to listen to others using the frequency. This also means that if you have a tone set and some other party calls for help, you would not hear them. I monitor GMRS frequencies quite often with no tones, and living on a rural farm I mostly only hear kids with FRS or some workers along the highway using HT's, and sometimes hunters.

    • @RKingis
      @RKingis 2 роки тому +1

      Channels 1-22 are shared by both services. However GMRS can use wide band, and FRS uses Narrow Band.

  • @Elfnetdesigns
    @Elfnetdesigns 2 роки тому +1

    Yep if you have the programming equipment and ONLY if they are operating in the ham radio bands and you have a license (if you are a by the letter of the rules person). However in reality the FCC is a big bag of hot air with no strong enforcement anymore. Sure they will go after a pirate FM station because FM band is prime real-estate. Same applies for the cellular and TV bands. Those users have big $$$$ and the FCC knows they can collect. Every once in a while they will go after some tacticool baofeng owner who is a licensed tech ham ,,or some airsoft playing preppers interfering with local public services or railroads.
    Part 95 equipment is generally Channelized, meaning the FCC as allocated frequencies and set them into channels for you. You can see this with FRS, GMRS, MURS, and CB radios
    There are dual certified radios of the past that are perfectly legal, Motorola 1225 (non LS. The LS radios are trunking and are only part 90) series is one
    The thing people LOVE to throw up is the Part 90 vs Part 95 rules regarding GMRS/FRS and other radios like say a Motorola APX8000. RF speaking YES those radios can and will work together and truth be told the APX will have better filtering than the big box store FRS/GMRS radios do. What makes the APX "illegal" is the fact it is multi band, can be set up for direct entry programming, and does digital and trunking modes (the whole emissions thing). So what about a Chinafeng or Japaseu ham radio? Well those are part 97 which is well ham radio. Same thing applies there minus the emissions and more focused on the fact they can be direct entry keypad programmable and are multi band. It's all a bunch of red tape really and these days the ONLY people who care about what radio you use are the ham guys. The reality is that people will use what fits their budget be it a set of FRS radios, GMRS radios, MURS radios or second hand dirt cheap 800 MHz radios and most will not bother with a license either because the use does not justify the cost if you only use radios once a year for some camping trip or whatever. This is also where the "get your ham license" trap starts being activated too. People will say "Get your ham license, it's a great hobby" and it is a great hobby, but these people do this with no real consideration if the user is actually looking for a radio hobby, The ham community with ARRL (in the USA) wants those member numbers UP, it's like a MSM rating system where the numbers matter not the people. If you do not want a ham radio hobby then why bother with a ham license, it makes no logical sense really besides the cellular infrastructure has proven itself to be a resource worth gold in times of distress. Hell in Ukraine right now (2022) in a literal warzone, cellular services are still working for the most part. Yes there are outages but only in the worst areas but also there are no ham radios transmitting either from there either. Point is simply this, Cell providers have millions if not billions to throw into R&D and construction of their infrastructure, hams do not. Yes cell has dead spots out in the boonies but so does ham, unless you want to lug an HF rig around.. Each system has it's place though, That is the simple explanation.
    At the end of the day, it's YOUR money you throw into radios, do what YOU want with them, just be aware that there is a possibility you maybe could get into some trouble if you are not experienced in how to program and use certain radios.

      Use your Baofeng to tell a hamster 'good morning'. They're lonely. Don't expect to see that 300lb porker paddling through the mud with no FRS.

      @AdventureCruiser  2 роки тому

      True, but that isn’t an option on these radios. I’ve only heard of NAC in conjunction with P25. Do you know of other instances where it’s used?

    The Motorola is superior to the Chinese Rocky Talkie. Better sound and range

    They're claiming compatibility that doesn't exist. Please compare fairly.
    Why am I supposed to need 105 non-programmable, privately-numbered "channels" to escape other radio's?
    What am I? Frankenstein?
    Who's the odd man out? They did those sub-channels to cut costs on firmware, not provide options.
    Non-standard tone numbers is a dirty trick. They have no web kiosks in the mountains to look them up, Building all that into a radio with no cross reference is criminal.
    Get something like a Baofeng 88 ST Pro, for instance. It does everything these do, and can lock onto channel codes. Even Rocky Talkie codes.
    Save enough to hand them out to your friends,. NOAA weather, too. No rubber glove to collect mud...
    It's form over function. Still, it's progress. Lock them onto the kids, too 🙂

      You bring up a really good point, but the radio does have a display. You also can change any of the privacy tones on any of the channels should you wish to. I ran a frequency counter over the radio, and I believe it’s each batch of 22-ish channels has the same tone on it. They do have standard tones.

      You need to check out the Baofeng GT-22 (FRS radio). It is the only FRS radio that I have found that you need to program.
