- Really sweet Jack-a-Roe from the great month of May, 1977, the Grateful Dead performing at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre.
A recording of the entire show can be listened to here:

there is nothing like Jack a Roe from 1977...that "shuffle", that sweet piano, Bob's subtle rhythm guitar, and Jerry telling the story with such sweet inflection....always makes me smile
The rhythm is so tight and Jerry's lead just bounces on the beats. Excellent.
Sweet perfection
Best version I've heard. Takes it to a different level. Was only really familiar with it from Reckoning and some random live stuff here and there. This is a different beast.
Jack-a-Roe one of my all-time faves
Tis lovely, but 1989 is better
This is easily the dopest version of Jack-A-Roe. Not sure how to describe it...but it overflows with swag from start to finish....
Calyps0
I love it all, but I prefer 1989
53 Years, the stars that burn the brightest, flame out fastest, however this mans legacy is close to immortal.
Jerry made 10,000 fall every night!
My dad always used to sing this to me when I was little, I love this song for reminding me of him! :)
Jack-a-Roe is one of those Jerry ballads that I never tire of listening to.
The dead never ceases to inspire and amaze me with all of the dazzling variety of versions of classics like this
May they always amaze and inspire. They are after all Jehova's favorite choir.
"It must have been the roses."

I am so blessed to have been to even one show let alone many. I miss Jerry!! 🖤
The fact that they married the old folk tales and the wayward sound. Im so happy i got to live in this time with them. ❤
Well said.
I miss this guy
He played with a ton of heart.
Me also
Duh
Jerry was a great singer-a fact often overlooked
Agreed
Pig pen
culls33 pretty sure he's not overlooked considering half of the world quite literally worships him
haha yah i am living and dying listening to this music 20 hours a day for last 10 years.. just to try to get a glimpse into whats happening here to try to bring an ounce of the same energy to music i want to play live for people, so yah if it is overlooked it just because of the guitar playing and songwriting, wizardry in general..
I personally don't think Jerry was overlooked, but people didn't realize songs like this one. Jerry had way more depth to him than people realized. Most people just know the radio songs like truckin or touch of grey. That was just the tip of the iceberg for the GD. But I know what you mean by saying he was overlooked. It's just that people didn't dig deeper. Peace man!
still my favorite dead song, its perfect in every way
Do u know of a version that they have extended the jam out?
Check out 11/6/79 Philly.
You will not be disappointed. For some odd reason, Road Trips removed it!
It's here on UA-cam.

I could buy a town the size of Albany...
🐺 i saw them three times in '77
🐺 Friday and Saturday at The Palladium.
John Belushi cheerleading in the second row . Then Englishtown . 🎶
beyond incredible
my favorite version of this as of right now
How about now ?
how bout NOW?!!
This really is an exceptional rendition.
Thank you so much, Chase, for promoting this little slice of musical history here -- and in a reasonably hifi bitrate, too.
Ya done good.
There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. Never has been, never will be. Thanx for posting this.
One of my favorite traditionals. I love how Joan Baez covered it as well. Amazing guitar work from them both. 💜
Only Jerry and the Dead can play a song like this, truly special.
Simply, yet not so simply exquisite. This is beautiful
Spot on! Tremendous tune and wayyyy too underrated
One of the best of many versions of this great tune! Never a bad DEAD tune! RIP: Jerry---so sorely missed buddy.
Best love song ever
Favorite Jack A Roe, Jerrys voice is so smooth on this one.
Very cool performance from May 77 - one my favorite Dead periods . I'm listening to Pure Jerry 8 (Jerry & John Kahn 2/26/86 San Rafael CA) and they perform an extremely stripped down version very similar to this.
Maybe the best Jack-A-Roe ever.
Duh
I started playing guitar because I wanted to learn to play like Garcia. Now I'm starting to catch on. Thank you Jerry!
One of the most gorgeous renditions of this song oh how you are missed my friend, our hearts bleed and are souls are forever grateful RIP brother
It's FUNKY
So beautiful… Get em Jack a roe,get em..
You, sir, are wonderful! Thank you, especially for this one!!!
Lovely photos.
I was at this show!
Yes, best I've heard. It's delicate tender yet Jerry is dominant and robust with his vocals
Ahhh...Pembroke Pines. 5/22/77...my favorite!
This one is great - a few night's later they nail it again at Univ Alabama. May 17.
Sooo🍯! My favorite version
chase we love you
Hello Chase ! Indeed a truly wonderful version of Jack a Roe, pure, sincere, honest and notably a beautiful and clean Jerry vocals : with excellent compliments from Bob & Phil. Again, ... perhaps a "best" version ... Peace to you, signed "LoloYodel"
Wonderful
coffee and dead this morning/ :)
& hope it to be every morning ... :)
Same here...
Mountain biking and the Dead for me this morning
And again Today
Waking and baking and surfing waves with the DEAD every morning....🙏😎
Back in like 87 or so, when video stores were still the sign the gas stations, jerry and I met.... well, he walked around me with his stack of like 10 videos up against his belly and chest. Sure wish I could be back, I’d hug him so hard his videos would have fallen , 10,000 fall!
I friggin love this jam man
A brilliant vocal and solo by Jerry.
Love that song 77 was their greatest year. Also read it was the year Jerry found heroin.
Saw yonder the other day and they covered this...It was so awesome! Life is made from small moments like that :) Love this song no matter who its performed by
Thank you Chase :) QC
Fantastic....this broadcast has always been one of my fav recordings. band horsing around at the start, great songs and an all-time Scarlet-Fire....a great show from an unbelievable month
Was a great month/year for this band. Barton Hall just as remarkable.
Playing it often, so smooth...
Great performance of a tragic tale, with a touch of HOPE!!!!!
That was absolutely beautiful.
Perfect.
Like to can't with how fucking good this on soooo many levels
This song does it for me plenty of times over and over
Phil can put any man into a trance
Dur
always warms the soul
sweet
So many versions...this clean slowed down one is by far best
such a simple song so beautifully sung. miss you, Jerry so much. thanks for the post
Right track inn. You go Jeff we were there. Tx 🎉🎉🎉❤🎉
Thanks...a real treat!
First time they played this song. Surprised no one else noted this. Second time, two days later, is the version included on the "Phil Zone" CD. I'd love to hear Further do it this way.
I was gonna mention it and was looking to see if anyone had noted it. Nice call. Indeed - this is the debut. This show has always been a top 5 for me. Dr Beechwood....
Much thanks!
One of our favorites my beloved Peter and I would dance to 💜
First time played, Auditorium Theater, Chicago - 5/13/77
Young and foolish didn't understand the greatness of Jerry until a few years ago. 🙁
40 years later... jerry would be so disappointed...
I really love the 77 samba arrangements. I love the song no matter what, but I favor 77 dead anyway.
Kyle Broad
Found awesome ‘77 performances but can you give some titles you refer to as samba arrangements? I’m not new to the dead but new to some awesome versions I’ve been finding. This one is so smooth.
great pics for this timeless dead tune!
Thank you for posting 💖
Nothing like the good ole Grateful Dead.
But beautiful, thank you.
Traceling, I didn't know that, and that really does make it special (beyond the obvious distinctions between this interpretation and most of the later ones).
Thank you much for sharing that info.
still one of da best i ever heard
Thank you very much for this chasefukuoka!! :)
My favorite groove for this tune is spring of 77.
That's around the time he came to the Lucky Nugget in Apache Jct. and jammed with us.
You jammed with Jerry Garcia?!... that's so cool!!
ah i love this rendition of jack a roe.. it just rolls
I was at this show Jack A Roo To me it was a bust out Such a great well played show magnificent set list they played so great in Chicago and Midwest Later I read Jerry had a girlfriend in Chi town that and they used like to party at the Blues Bar a private club across from Second City great times!
For my money the best Jackaroe EVER.
Possibly. Try dozin at the knicks.
very special...!!! awesome!!!!
@Shlotzkin Based on the Strat Jerry is playing, my guess is that if it's not the Rennaissance Faire in Oregon, Aug 27, '72, it's pretty close by. Alligator was being repaired and Jerry was playing a loaner strat. There is video around of that show. Here's a semi-link to a nice board of the show. Caution - the DS is really epic. The Greatful Dead is wonderful
I really love the photos you used, they capture the best of the guys, they all look frame-able. Good sound quality too.
Frame able?
this community continues to amazing me...
"Jack-A-Roe"
There was a wealthy merchant
In London he did dwell
He had a beautiful daughter
The truth to you we'll tell
Oh, the truth to you we'll tell
She had sweethearts a-plenty
And men of high degree
But none but Jack the sailor
Her true love ever be
Oh, her true love ever be
Jackie's gone a-sailing
With trouble on his mind
He's left his native country
And his darling girl behind
Oh, his darling girl behind
She went down to a tailor shop
And dressed in man's array
She climbed on board a vessel
To convey herself away
Oh, convey herself away
Before you get on board, sir
Your name we'd like to know
She smiled on her countenance
They called me Jack-a-Roe
Oh, they called me Jack-a-Roe
I see your waist is slender
Your fingers they are small
Your cheeks too red and rosy
To face the cannonball
Oh, to face the cannonball
I know my waist's too slender
My fingers they are small
But it would not make me tremble
To see ten thousand fall
Oh, to see ten thousand fall
The war soon being over
She went and looked around
Among the dead and wounded
Her darling boy she found
Oh, her darling boy she found
She picked him up on in her arms
And carried him to the town
She sent for a physician
To quickly heal his wounds
Oh, to quickly heal his wounds
This couple they got married
So well, they did agree
This couple they got married
So why not you and me?
Oh, why not you and me?
Oh, why not you and me?
My fave gds. I dunno why...
This one is held down by Bill and Funky Phil like glue! Jerry's guitar is sweet sweet icing on the cake 💀♥️💙
Just to think 5 years and 10 days earlier they were jamming out in Paris. Nice
I think there are all of two celebrities whose passing really bothered me. One was Audrey Hepburn and the other Jerry Garcia. I'm 66yrs old never-married with few relationships, most of short duration This will not surprise anyone who knows much about me. Right now there's someone sending me text messages which seem to indicate she may be having serious ( or perhaps that would be seriously deranged ) feelings toward me. If it's really true and I like her a lot when we have a face2face confrontation if I "pop the question" it's going to be via this song. "--so why not you and me?"
"The truth of love an unsung song must tell. The course of love must follow blind---without a look behind." I swear to it on my very soul---if I lie may I fall-down cold.
Sweet jack of Row thanks man
Nice graffix
I'm so glad Jerry used perfect coverage timeless glow complexion corrector ;) !
F I R E, yo.
Cool cool first cover photo. Never seen that shot!
yeah boys
Best
this duke uni 78 and vegas bowl 94!!
Dead are bringing me through covid19. It's been a concert over here....while I ignore the world or take an occasional peak from the sidelines. This music is a haven. I really miss the old man, and he always seemed old even when he was young. He left too the concert too early. When things get back to normal, I'm tracking down the other ones and checking out some music. Right now, I miss all of them and will just be grateful for the tapers, the video and this vehicle to watch it all on.
August 8th is always hard.
All these replies will never matter, this song is amazingly beautiful
