I met the most beautiful girl I've ever seen in my life the first day of my freshman year of high school. We became close friends very quickly and I loved her (still do) more than words can tell. Her mother, Stella took me in during a terribly tumultuous time during those four short years as if I were her own son..her name was Stella. Stella died tragically one night in a house fire and I don't know if I'll ever really get over it...that was over 25 years ago. The first Grateful Dead concert I ever went to with the most beautiful girl in the world was at Deer Creek in 1992 the year after Stella died. The band played Stella Blue that night and I will never forget it. I still love you Stella and I miss you and I know your lovely daughter does too. I will never hear this song and not think of them both~I love you so very much...I hope to see you both again some day.
That song is a wonderful soundtrack for this dismal situation that was brought 2 u n ur high school days. There is always sumthin' 2 remind of us the 'good 'ol days.' At least this song is always around to paint that masterpiece...
I found this song by accident after looking up Pigpen. This is actually the first Grateful Dead song I'm listening to right now. I've been hearing about Grateful Dead for years but was into other music all my life. Funny how you become aware of songs when the time is right, and you rediscover all over again why you love music. All I can say about this song is it makes sadness pleasantly haunting
This Stella really manifests the utterly ineffable, soul filling beauty that they brought to our lives, and which is truly impossible to capture in words for anyone who wasn't on the long, strange trip. Other than my daughter, who is the light of my world and the center of my universe, what I am Grateful about above all other things is that my life intersected Jerry Garcia's in spacetime for so very long. NFA, brothers and sisters. Bid you goodnight.
Maybe this 30-year DeadHead is just really stoned, or is this one of the most incredible videos I've EVER SEEN on UA-cam?!? The combination of this particular version of "Stella Blue" and the flow of the accompanying images reduced me to tears six or seven times during it's playback. Bravo......bravo.....!!!!!!!!! GRATEFUL DEAD FOREVER
Just as Jerry was there for others, do unto others and let yourself be influenced by the joy he created not the tons of drugs he ingested. You can get high on just Love alone. Deadheads have a unique opportunity to change the world. Don't miss out on this. We are family. Spread the magic.
It was some years before I found myself ranking these lyrics with Robert Hunter's best (rather sentimental; and it's hard to match his very best), but I keep finding myself thinking more and more highly of this song. The guitar/person metaphors are clear from the beginning (I owned one of those cheap Stella guitars -- never did learn to play it). The sustained sense and depth are there. Robert Hunter is, in my mind, one of the finest lyric writers to ever put pen to paper and one of those who fully earns the designation "poet." And this song is very, very good.
Chase! Excellent pick - great video My son is 2.5 years old this month and the only thing he wants to hear (and sometimes see) is your UA-cam Stella!! He says “Stel boo” - he even knows the words and sings along a bit! Thanks for posting this from me and Xander!! Finest band in all the land!
Keith was vastly underrated-in my opinion he was the best keyboardist they had. And '77 is my go to year for any great version of any song want to listen to, especially my favorite Stella Blue. ❤️
Ahhh death!!!!! What a wonderful word. Get ready to return to the spirit world everybody. I hope it greets you warm. My dead brothers dog is shutting down her machine. She's all I have left of him. She helped him on his return to the spirit realm. I just asked her to kiss him and let him know I treated her well.
Both a beautifully done video and musical performance. Stella Blue-Jerry Garcia, Robert Hunter (lyrics) All the years combine They melt into a dream A broken angel sings From a guitar In the end there's just a song Comes crying like the night Through all the broken dreams And vanished years Stella Blue When all the cards are down There's nothing left to see There's just the pavement left And broken dreams In the end there's still that song Comes crying like the wind Down every lonely street That's ever been Stella Blue I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel Can't win for trying Dust off those rusty strings just One more time Gonna make em shine It all rolls into one And nothing comes for free There's nothing you can hold For very long And when you hear that song Come crying like the wind It seems like all this life Was just a dream Stella Blue
When I was touring this song was always a pleasant break from the jam. As I look back on it now, however, I think this might be one of my favorite 2nd set tunes. Beautiful version.
Jerry played Stella Blue at my first show and I've always loved, loved, loved this song! It is quite possibly my favorite all time Jerry song. It brings tears to my eyes every time and this one is no different. Jerry's guitar playing in this version is spot on. Great version! Thank you! 77 was their best year IMO.
This performance amplimies positive memories brings consolation to bad memories brings hope for the future and perspectives to the present. Thanks for your videos. The cheese stands alone in Dead tube.
I was at the show the night before. This show was broadcast on FM radio. I recorded it, but had a flip-flub during the Stella. It's nice to hear it intact!
The thoughts of some down and out musician, composed against some of the most soaring guitar work ever recorded... no wonder this is such a classic of the work this band has put out. Along with amazing visuals by chasefukuoka61 !!!! What an outstanding way to end my night... And off to sleep, and dreamland I go...
Spectacular images and editing. This should have been my first show but I had to work at a deli in Lincolnwood and let go of my ticket (my Friday the 13th/somebody's miracle!). The show was simulcast on WXRT and my sister started the recording for me. I got back in time to catch the second set and the unfortunate soundboard problem during "Going Down the Road," the followup to Stella. Nevertheless, it remained one of my favorite tapes and hardly left my boombox for a long, long time thereafter.
Yes it is!!! May 22, 1977 Pembroke Pines Fl. is for me the best Grateful Dead show I ever attended, and not to one up you but the Stella Blue that night makes this very beautiful version seem like a rehearse l. It was so Beautifully sung and played. Jerry was pristine in all aspects that night as were the rest of the band Donna G included, her voice that night has never been equaled as far as I know. Thank you for this beautiful post.
Mark Shirazi. Dicks Picks edited out some stuff from many shows they put out. try Archive.org go to Grateful Dead, then look up the show. I hope it's still there..
my favorite song of all time...and my favorite version... I was there...and fer some reason that Stella was an epoch of transcendence..fer me. Oh my goodness you did a wonderful job with the video. Ya done good ..mighty awful powerful good.
This song just took me way back to my happy place (another time's forgotten space). Thanks for making this, I'm going to write down this show and get it. This was one of the best Stella Blues I have ever heard.
What an amazing video to sink into and take a ride along with! At an amazingly slow tempo that the boys make work. Really sweet vocals and guitar explorations from Jerry. Thanks for such a wonderful video to accompany the journey!
@chasefukuoka61 - Just want thank you so much...beautiful video, beautiful song. August 9th is upon us again and to sit back to your video is very special to a lot of us. Have a great day my friend, Jack
Such a beautiful video! And thank you for bringing me to some gentle waves at song's end. Sweet ride. A great Stella...I love this song! And wasn't '77 the year these guys just couldn't do any wrong? Saw my 1st show a week before this in New Haven. I was too young to realize what I was experiencing but now I think everything from that year is pure gold and I listen to the whole '77 Spring Tour....every Spring. Like a ritual...Thanks again, bro!

Thanks for sharing.
W Tango Delta How great to have that memory along with this song as the outlet to that memory! Those are priceless...
That song is a wonderful soundtrack for this dismal situation that was brought 2 u n ur high school days. There is always sumthin' 2 remind of us the 'good 'ol days.' At least this song is always around to paint that masterpiece...
Thanks for sharing!
Thats my home town.!
We are so fortunate the dead allowed taping and people passionately recorded these timeless epic performances.
Big Love to all the taper's I thank them every day
Yes, they had a light-years better - and smarter - attitude toward taping than any other band.
I found this song by accident after looking up Pigpen. This is actually the first Grateful Dead song I'm listening to right now.

This is the song that brought me in too, 'bout 20 years ago. Named our beloved dog Stella Blue and everything :)
...hope your Dead-discovery goes on
If is often said you don’t find the Grateful Dead, the Grateful Dead find you.
@@kip4966 Be careful , HIGHLY ADDICTIVE :)
Crazy how one of the most delicate songs can be so heavy. Greatest band to have ever played..

Jerry brings me to places I've never been.
iwas there dontwant tears but there they are
but still seem familiar

So beautiful. When words and music outweigh space and time. Love the Dead forever.
Beautifully said 👏 ❤
I think this is the best Stella Blue I've heard. Love the song. Daughter named Stella
Check out the one in the GD Movie.
If I ever have children I've always said stella blue or Scarlet fire for girl names.
Takes me back to the shows, the granny skirts, and the sunshine throng sharing the same trip.
Everything so gentle, Jerry's plaintive singing, the sparkly lyricism of his guitar. Deep beauty here.
I get goosebumps everytime Jerry sings "It seems like all this life was just a dream". The Dead are so damn amazing :)
“There’s nothing you can hold... for very long” for me
Chase! Excellent pick - great video

the mix is perfect, the piano so so so sweet...RIP Keith
Hey there miss Marcia!! Hope the world is treating you right💜
Keith was vastly underrated-in my opinion he was the best keyboardist they had. And '77 is my go to year for any great version of any song want to listen to, especially my favorite Stella Blue. ❤️
Love the waves at the end
What a video . Only the dead can do anything like this . The older I get the more I appreciate their music ✌️
"Dust off those rusty strings just one more time..............gonna make them Shine".
This is one of the most beautiful versions of Stella
I never leave comments, but your 77 slideshows are great. Was and still There. Love to all.
Jerry, still missing you so... All my love... Thank you for all the great memories..& Wonderful times! Just another little ol' deadhead!
this as so beautiful!
Great video. I listen to this almost every night.
Ahhh death!!!!! What a wonderful word. Get ready to return to the spirit world everybody. I hope it greets you warm. My dead brothers dog is shutting down her machine. She's all I have left of him. She helped him on his return to the spirit realm. I just asked her to kiss him and let him know I treated her well.
yup. came back for another listen. I agree
Happy tears collecting in my ears. Goosebumps on every square inch. What a ride that was.
Both a beautifully done video and musical performance.
Stella Blue-Jerry Garcia, Robert Hunter (lyrics)
All the years combine
They melt into a dream
A broken angel sings
From a guitar
In the end there's just a song
Comes crying like the night
Through all the broken dreams
And vanished years
Stella Blue
When all the cards are down
There's nothing left to see
There's just the pavement left
And broken dreams
In the end there's still that song
Comes crying like the wind
Down every lonely street
That's ever been
Stella Blue
I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel
Can't win for trying
Dust off those rusty strings just
One more time
Gonna make em shine
It all rolls into one
And nothing comes for free
There's nothing you can hold
For very long
And when you hear that song
Come crying like the wind
It seems like all this life
Was just a dream
Stella Blue
James Lindsay love ❤😘✌

Thank you for fading into the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach

Well said.
I like cheese..
I was at the show the night before. This show was broadcast on FM radio. I recorded it, but had a flip-flub during the Stella. It's nice to hear it intact!
This version is EPIC - God Bless the Tapers and God Bless the Dead. Forever & Alwayz 🙃😁💙💚💜🎵🎶
In the end there’s just a song
Friends just had a baby and called her Stella. Came to hear the beautiful song and got a wonderful video too. Thank you.

"There's nothing you can own for very long"

What fine work on the visuals. And a sublime performance by Garcia.

+Alex Bruce thought i might find that 5-22-77 version of stella on dick's pick volume 3 but no luck. you got me curious.
Mark Shirazi. Dicks Picks edited out some stuff from many shows they put out. try Archive.org go to Grateful Dead, then look up the show. I hope it's still there..
Unless I'm too dumb to locate the subject version of Stella Blue from the Archive.org show list it doesn't seem to exist. Any solution?
WOW this is so beautiful,it takes you away to that HAPPY GILMORE place in yer life
Thanks Chase, this rendition is crazy

A broken angel sings from a guitar. Yes, indeed.

Major voodoo on this version. Best Stella Blue ever in my books. I want this one played at my funeral.
