All I know is that this is a KILLER version of He's Gone. Donna actually sounds good and the jazzy interlude was done with emotion. When they nail it, they nail it!
Best He's Gone ever.
It did become about Pigpen and anyone else close to the band who passed but Rodrigo is correct. It was originally written about Mickey's father. Pigpen didn't stop touring with the Dead until June of 72 and this song was played live for the first time in April of 72.
My dog just passed, listening on repeat...
you can hear bobby's unique rhythm guitar playing really well in this recording.
one of the greatest songs ever ...
Jerry and the rest of my family are gone...... and ditched me here! Lol
Some day we will all smile together again, Peace
My friend and I hitched-hiked to California from NH in 1978. I was Gone. I've gone through years of living. My Dad is 91 years old, and he's about at the end...to make a long story short...
This song has all kinds of meanings, through the years, and all good. All good. All good. The Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia.
Steve Allen My Dad is 94, and he never complains. He always enjoys a curry.
This song always gave me peace of mind when I would think of older brother who passed. Thank you, Grateful Dead
Damm...Jerry...I am 61 and i still hear you like you are right beside me....Why did you have to leave us ...that loved you....
This rendition is fire 🔥 reminds me of my bro who passed away in 2001 at only 43 😞🌹🥀🌹🥀
We all drove down from Jersey for this show..two car loads....Great Show! Great Day!
So many depths reached. simply amazing Jerry, missed everyday and no one can or could replace you. some make music others create it, you've done both plus make and created something that touches the soul as well. He's Gone.......
I love this song. The Grateful Dead makes me feel so alive.
I was one of the many fortunate ones to meet Jerry and the boys back in 1990 at Chinese New Years with my friend who made a giant red dancing bear costume. The promoters asked if we could come back stage to show Jerry and the band plus their kids the costume. This was one of Wavey Gravy's idea, he loved it. We even made Bear bucks for each venue. We will always carry a part of Jerry in our hearts and souls. Thank you Bob and Phil for keeping the flame alive with FURTHER. Thank you,
i soo love bobby's tone here. the phaser makes it so smooth and his hand is just so clearly silky on the strings
Good ear! Wouldn't have heard those subtleties, otherwise..
Bobby is one of, if not the, most underrated rhythm guitarist of all time. But you could honestly say that about any of the boys.
For my best friend Dolfo. I miss you man and I'm sorry that I wasn't there in the end.
I echo your sentiments to my brother who was my best friend, and now reflecting back, my only true friend.
Thank you Theo, few words with great profundity.
God bless you and yours Theo in these strange and difficult times we are living in.
I never heard anyone eek so much soul out of few simple lines on a guitar like Jerry Garcia... That first solo is so simple, yet powerful... could never be repeated
I had tickets and went to this show but had two dogs in the car. So I gave a couple miracles and drove back another 800 miles.
For my beloved who died three months ago today, rest your sweet soul, Kenny.
Just lost my brother and came here too sorry for your loss My brother turned me onto the Grateful Dead
He did you a great favor that will enrich your life for all of your days.
hahaaaa holy moly every recording of this song is my favorite song ever
this tune kills me, to all our family we have lost, love you all
"Nothin' left to do but Smile, Smile, Smile..."
Jerry Garcia was a master of the guitar. Its his subtleties that made him a genius
Ultimate Fav... "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile." :-)
peace n love to all who read this... incredible music peaceful people. thank you thank you
Jeremy Marple thank you for writing it, you've restored my faith in humanity by doing it.
For My Only Brother, "...Nothin' left to do but smile, smile smile."
This is my favorite version. Stripped and slowed down, airy, room for the instruments to echo out into nothing.
One of my favorites.... I heard it was about someone who had an involuntary trip at a concert - and was never the same again.... I'm not sure what it's about but I love the tune.
It's actually about Lenny Hart, Mickey's dad, who was their money manager. He took off with a bunch of their money.
May the four winds blow all my family and friends home..xox
He {Jerome} is Gone , but never forgotten..... Always to be heard by future generations.
Now out in the Dark Stars/---> Supernova'd.
Like a headlight on a Northbound train.
70s dead is so good! well its all good, but I really like their sound in this era.
JacksonHoff same! I'm definitely a lover of the seventies. currently listening to all of Europe 72 in order. so many great versions of this song then
My Uncle John died of something called grape vine cancer at this time....He was 26...I was 9.. ..I didn't know him well...I keep reflecting back ...The best music we ever had was from the 70's
he is gone, but not unheard. thanks GD
Playing now for my best friend Derek Todd Littrell who went to JerryLand today at 3:50 pm EST 7-11-2016 may he RIP
Derek Lattrel my best friend died last summer at 28 from over dose. Playin for him.
Sing this at my funeral and I shall lie in eternal sleep with peace
Me, too. Played this over and over on 8/9/95. This is from RFK 1973, I was at the next to last RFK show in 1994. Not the JG we knew, but the vibe was great; had a ton of my college and GD buddies chasin' the brownies and whippet vans all around. I'm 55 now and I am reserving my miracle tix for the GD in Heaven shows; order me up a Pearly Baker glass, Andrew!
My mother passed away in June and this song has become my late night lament.
that breakdown around 8:00... this is why I like the dead so much... brave enough to try something like that and skilled enough to pull it off
My first Dead show! I remember how the end of this song seemed to go on forever until a chill went through the crowd as we realized they were singing about Pig Pen. I wrote about this show in detail on my voncello website in the Vistors' Corner, calling it "Life Is But A Dream".
Wonderful the meanings their songs can have. For me this song is about Mickey Hart's dad, but when I was helping to care for my dad with cancer I knew exactly what Phil was saying with 'Box of Rain'. Yet 25 years earlier my wife to be and I first told each other "I love you" slow dancing to 'Box' in my living room. When we divorced, 'Ship of Fools' was my soundtrack, even though that song was originally inspired by problems arising from the Shakedown Street peddlers. The Dead is life.
Nothing like the Dead.Always have a place in my heart.
I was there! I think it was there summer between 8th grade and high school. What were my parents thinking?? Life was never the same after that.
i like how the kick drum mic is up in the mix. those old mics sounded wonderful.
+Sid Fernandez They were so far ahead of everyone with their sound production even in 1973. I love the kick sound too, I would love to know what mic they were using, likely a shure but I don't know.
+Sid Fernandez ....It's all about the equalizer. Third or fourth slider from the left is where the kick drum lives.
I don't know what it is, but this song just gets me. Especially the Euro 72 version
Agreed. And this song brings us the iconic masterpiece - both advertising and spiritual - of 'steal your face right off your head'. Gotta love the Dead!
Bobby did it last night in Chicago and between humbled and chills when the crowd sang it right back to him, it was awesome
This song has gorgeous imagery and takes on many meanings depending on the listener. I take away a contemplation of change, a celebration of death, and beautiful descriptions of animals and nature.
Jeremy Krinn I was there. he did an amazing version of it. gives me goosebumps thinking about it. haven't stopped thinking about it since we heard it.
Hey guys, glad we could all agree on something :)
As the saying goes "Thanks Jerry"
Just had our cat of 15 years put down today. This takes the edge off a little. Not enough but a little. RIP Batman
Grateful Dead will always be great, generation after generation.
Part of my education while finishing my second year of teaching. $ students took me to RFK stadium-Grateful Dead and the Allmand Brothers, 12 hours of purity. Set me up for 30 years of teaching HS. Love to those Gaithersburgh High students. U. of Md. gave me my degree, but my students graduated me. Some of the are already dead. Peace, sweet to dream and dream sweet. Hm. I just noticed this must have been the concert. It was all those garbage bags filled with weed, piles of coke, led. Free, imagine that!! Some greedy money being made now!
This song it ain't never gonna end
I always thought it was about Neal, I swear I saw him juggling on stage with the Dead in 1970, 2 years after he died, but things were very subjective back then.
neal
Right on man, i've been coming back to his first solo here almost daily for the past few months. It almost moved me to tears the first time I heard it..
All i can say is i miss you Jerry!!!
He'gone but not forgotten 🙏❤️❤️
10:00 and on is one of my favorite musical moments ever. its just leaves me awestruck every time i hear it. everyone is just so in touch right there..
Wow. This is great
nothing left to do but smile smile smile
Great show! I was there both days. It was hot and so were the Dead!
ich liebe Jerry und seine Freunde ! Grateful Dead. ist .was jeder Mensch will !
long time fan of the dead, have tickets for philly and columbia,md furthur fest summer 2012 stop. so glad Bob and Phil still rockn, first show in 1988, 18 at time, and cant wait till july. maybe they roll out a he's gone. thanks for posting.
This song isn't about Pigpen, they sang it on the Europe 72 tour when Pig was still in the band. Its about Lenny Hart, Mickey's dad and the bands ex-manager who stole aproximately 100,000 dollars from the band. Which back in 71 was equal to exactly one fuck-ton. That's why Mickey quit from '71 to '75.
Pictures pricesless. Love, strange, but just peace...
My favorite dead song. Although franklins tower got me on the bus
This song may be about something completely different, but music speaks to people in different ways.
For me this song represents the ever-growing void between society and myself.
There can be disagreement ,
If there is a void perhaps you have not grasped the point of argument which can leave people fighting over the incorrect parameters
Which is very frustrating
I myself struggle everyday with people that believe Cain killed Able(without understanding the story in any real way , because they are not taught the story correctly)
But I enjoy telling people that Able is alive and well, and that Cain never ever actually killed Able
Which confuses them,
The best bit is when I explain that the story is about Brain Anatomy and how that affects Consoiuness
So why do they want half thier brain to be Dead I ask ?
Great fun and it fills the void
I was at RFK in '73 ..... met JG backstage .... awesome
I love the acapella break... it's Dead vocals at their best!
My first show was in Golden Gate Park, near Haight Street. My oldest son was about 6 and the youngest(who was named after Bob "Dylan" I can still see one in diapers and one twirling. Awwww, those are wonderful memories. I continued to see Jerry and the guys anywhere. Jerry you changed so many lives, with love and music!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
But he couldn't change his own... trying to fill a God sized hole with things infinitely smaller.
A hopeles leaking sieve...
So sad
Imagine being at RFK in 1973. I was just a kid.
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange 😎(~}:}
Its like jerrys guitar is crying during the solo, masterful playing.
The song I think of whenever the thought of my passed brother comes to mind. Yeah, I know what the song is really about. I just repurposed it
People come and go throughout our lives, some leave pain some leave joy and others equal parts of both. Mickeys' father, Lenny Hart as a manager, did the band dirty and made off with over $100k. Sad but true, now try to imagine the Dead without Mickey..?
This is not to take anything away from the Originator... Mr. Bill Kreutzmann, he is the Deads founding drummer and cherished musician by all of us Dead fans. Mickey in his own right has carved out a legacy to be honored. When I think of the Dead music that first enthralled me LIVE I cant separate the two drummers, the power and foundation that they together provided was essential to the bands unique and fantastic sound.
I was born in 76, me and my twin got to see the Dead 1 time at MSG before Jerry passed away. Thank God for You tube so i can see everything i missed being born too late
Makes me think of Bob Hayutin, Lewis & Clark College '88. Taken too early in 2000, loved the Dead and Jerry...and the kindest soul I have known. RIP
Miss you so much. RIP Jerry
Excellent version.
Holy cow, what a trippy tempo for this song...makes me want to melt into the floor (in a good way).
'he's gone" will be the title of my autobiography ...
for a variety of reasons
, not least of which is my appreciation for this songt
Rip Jerry ! we all miss you
It's kinda strange but very cool that people put this song with loved ones lost. I believe this song was about Mickys dad or so I was told ripping the band off. It's the Good Ol Dead open to interpatation
NO pig but it is still great too hear the cheers...LOVE YA RON..PIGPEN...McKernan....and miss you Jerry wish the new heads could just feel you up on stage....I am so lucky my folks were in to great tunes, times, and wonderful people...lovyas family and we all bleed tye-dye...
Wow
This is just great.
Man, the wall of sound setup sounds absolutely stunning in this recording. One of the best versions I've heard.
one of my favorites. jerry always has an interesting solo in it. lyrics are amazing whole thing is great! smile smile smile!
I understand that this song is about Mickey Hart's dad, who was a shithole, but I liked to play it after I got rid of a thieving abusive boyfriend, who was also a shithole. The lyrics are universal.
im not 100% but i think it was actually about pigpen. either way, great tune
+Jonathan Williams no, it's about hart's dad stealing from the band while he was manager but throughout the years they have played it for deaths in and around the band in fact the song was even on Europe 72 so it came before pigs death
Song of the day, today.
We were there @ RFK '73 both days - The Dead & Allman Bros - was very nice to hear this again ...
I Like when people respond to the music with informative comments rather than critical comments, as is the case here. If you don't like it, control yourself and move on, please.
My dog just passed to and i feel for ya Renard Leblanc.
yeah me too, i don't read history but been a deadhead since somewhere back in the 60's. got to work backstage on dead concert in Berdoo back about '68 or '69, PigPen, Jerry, oswley, the whole gang. and Country Joe was on the bill, ahh good times,,
This is a melt your face version. Fire.
First heard this song on Europe 72 that's also where got info on Dead Head fan club which paid off big time during by invitation only concerts which I was lucky to win several opportunities to get tix for Capitol theater in mid to late seventies when they were super tight still enjoyed them right to the end no Jerry no me love all the memories "All The Years Combine"
9 mile skid'in to you my lost friend...Jerry sang this to you that fateful night so many years ago.....now they are almost all gone.
Thanks for this. I'm from Silver Spring Md. and I MUST have been there - but, well, those years went up in a puff of smoke - and good smoke it was ! - Greetings to Matthew "Bud" and Barbara Protos - from L.Goldreich
we all have our favorite gd songs.but this always makes me dance
There's nothing better then to have that satisfaction
This might sound crazy but the first time I really "heard" this song was after my son died at the age of 33. I turned him on to all kinds of music. He played the guitar, wrote songs and was awesome! I followed the Dead but this song has a completely different meaning now! It was just 2 years ago that I lost my boy! I her it all the time now and think he is sending a message to me.... I love you Mike'y!
This made me cry.
🌹😎❤️⚡️✅🎸✌️
Thanks for sharing that with us. ❤️
Love u
