Video of a speech he gave to an Insurance Convention.
On this day in history, 2 May 1968, Raul (Roy) Perez Benavidez would take actions against an enemy force, armed with only a knife, that would lead to him being awarded the Medal of Honor, the DSC(Upgraded to MOH) and four Purple Hearts.
A 12-man Special Forces patrol which included nine Montagnard tribesmen, was surrounded by a NVA battalion. Benavidez heard the radio appeal for help and boarded a helicopter to respond. Armed only with a knife, he jumped from the helicopter carrying his medical bag and rushed to help the trapped patrol.
Benavidez "distinguished himself by a series of daring and extremely valorous actions... and because of his gallant choice to join voluntarily his comrades who were in critical straits, to expose himself constantly to withering enemy fire, and his refusal to be stopped despite numerous severe wounds, saved the lives of at least eight men."
He was evacuated to the base camp, examined, and thought to be dead. As he was placed in a body bag among the other dead in body bags, he was suddenly recognized by a friend who called for help. A doctor came and examined him and he too believed Benavidez was dead. The doctor was about to zipper up the bag when Benavidez managed to spit in his face, alerting the doctor that he was still alive. Benavidez had a total of 37 separate bullet, bayonet, and shrapnel wounds from the six hour fight with the enemy battalion. - Авто та транспорт
this man may be the toughest individual to ever carry a weapon
this man may be the toughest individual ever.
A knife too
I had the distinct honor of meeting this American Hero when I was in high school. He served with the assistant SAI in my high schools ROTC program in Vietnam. He was in the 5th Special Forces and a was the keynote speaker at our Military Ball in 1983. He was very humble and reserved. He never bragged about his exploits and if it hadn't been for the person who announced him, no one would've known all that this brave soldier had accomplished. I shook his hand and took a picture with him. He gave me advice that ive carried with me through Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, & Enduring Freedom. The same advice I gave my son when he joined the Marines and went to Syria! He never once referred to himself as a Hero although by definition, he was one. I was very saddened when I heard of his passing. Rest easy Sgt. Youve done your duty and are relieved. I'll see you at the Rally Point! God Bless
God bless you aswell brotha. ❤🙏
God bless you and thank you
He's a Mexican-American Here, a Chicano...
"I was declared to be the only Hispanic to speak German with a southern accent." The audience, by their laughter, loved it!
When I was there I was told I have a really thick southern accent.
This man was the reason I joined the US. Army. It was a privilege and an honor to know him, while growing up in the same home town.
very cool Mark... Thanks for your service, from a Navy vet...
Totally understand bro ! Thanks for your service from a grunt!
OMG! That is so neat. That you Mark for your service to our country, and making my life better. You are also a Patriot. God Bless you and yours.
Thanks for your words. I am Mexican-American from the same kind of background as Roy .... He deserves to be known by today's youth.

As a Canadian, it i am truly grateful for a fellow human being like Master Sergeant Benavidez. He is what character, conscience, and courage are all about. God bless, and rest in peace.
you dont win a MOH, it is awarded. Thank you for your service MSG Roy Benavidez RIP
Incredibly inspirational. I really don't know how you can give this a thumbs down unless you're a North Vietnamese communist. RIP, Benavidez, and I could never find sufficient words to thank you for your service.
The North Vietnamese would have revered him. They had more respect for us than our own people did.
Believe chen0466 even the NVAs respect this man. Only morons will be unrespectful with Master Sargent Benavides. But even from the tomb his legacy survives and flourish in our times.... and that goes for the 16 morons who gaved thumbs down.
That’s 16 liberals who have gone to college and were taught to HATE America!

That twat Jane Fonda would give it a thumbs down.
@@nix4644 That's what I was going to say. Hanoi Jane and the 19 morons worldwide who have any shred of respect for her are most likely responsible for the thumbs down. It must be tough being irrelevant in modern society, eh Jane?
As a member of the 101st I had the Honor of hearing him give us a speech on leadership. If BADASS was in the dictionary his picture along with a bunch of others would be there!! RAKKASAN!!

I never served . THANK YOU FOR MY FREEDOM.
This man was just like he is in this video. I know. He is my cousin. I could sit and listen to him for hours as a kid. He lived his life loving America.
@@LuisCruz-dr5xm Is he still alive? I read somewhere he had passed? Is that true? That makes me sad. I would like to tell him he is just great as our founding fathers! I would love to get a memorial go fund me web site, or get my politicians get one done for him. He is the very essence of America, George Washington, James Madison etc. If he was born in that era, fighting with those men, he would have a memorial. I'm a '63 year white man, grateful for his service. I have worked with and for many wonderful Hispanic-Americans....actually AMERICANS! Sorry. In my white eyes, you are the best of AMERICA! What I see in America today is that Hispanic and other ethinic groups see the Greatness of America, where alot of my white group just wants to forget it. Thank you and your family for your sacrifice. God Bless you all. Be safe, happy, and well.
I am Mexican-American and identify with Benavides' background. ... The body bag story was chilling.... "That's just too much for one day." Also, loved the story of the nurse who kept pinching him awake on his flight to the hospital.
What a GREAT HERO !
There is a Navy ship named after him, a Highway and his hometown has a statue. You can see a picture of it on this page. www.psywarrior.com/benavidez.html

What I would give to have been in his presence just for a little while. I feel so impacted by this amazing man forever . There are few words good enough for him. His family so blessed to have shared their love and lives with him. I am getting the book and I am going to carry my knowledge of this man and tell his story . I wish he was still here. It almost seems like he could never leave.
Thanks for your Service, the Master Sergeant came to our school and spoke, it truly was an honor to be in the same place as he

Did you serve in vietnam?
A man with balls. And for those 15 thumbs down.....shove it your thumbs where they fit. Be more respectful to this real american hero.
can You blame them??? They were the family of the slain Viet Cong he slaughtered.
Those are boys not men that would give a thumbs down to this true American Badass. He's a real hero. He's also one of the baddest motherf'ers that it would've been my great pleasure to have met. His story needs to be made into a movie. Unfortunately Hollywood would f it up.

I don't KNOW how ANYONE can hear THIS story of courage and not be proud to tears just to be another American with this man could even consider themselves an American...... regardless of the differing view points people had about Vietnam has no bearing on THIS man's courage ..... JMHO 👍🏼🇺🇸🤘
This man make me proud to be a human
I'm also Combat Engineer ; 82nd Airborne , Drill Sergeant and Vietnam Vet : Love my country and flag.
Wow, what a man. These people are the true 1%.

I had a tear in my eye the whole video.
Omg what a man, god bless you a wonderful man and a true hero.
Good God I was in tears of American pride before the Sgt even took the podium. Then he spoke. Wow.
I was already moved when at 5:05 he looks behind him when the announcer says he was clubbed from behind. Then at 5:13 you can see he is still able to visualise really well the part when he fought the enemy close and stabbed him and had to leave his knife in him. Apparently when he jumped off of the helo he only brought his knife and a med bag.
Roy Benavidez was not an American. He was just a Mexican in the U.S. army. He fought in a pointless war we didn't need to get involved in the first place. His service means nothing to me.
An ordinary man who did extraordinary things
Excellent way of putting it. Thank you.

What a GREAT EXAMPLE of honor, duty and faith!
One of my Heroes! Thank you!
what an inspiration.
I just saw the speech this incredible humble warrior gave, and i think what i am seeing in the NFL and through out this great country, i cry as i write this. This is one man of many, who put it all on the real line. Not a line with a goal post in the back of it. But one with, a barrier that few men have the courage or the desire to ever cross. I went through the last draft of that war, scared to death, that i would be one of the young men chosen to go and fight in a war i did not believe in. Would i have gone, yes. Would i have been scared, yes, do i think i could have done what this man did, no. But many i have spoken to of this war, told me, you don't know the heart you have, when you see a fellow American shot, and needs help, what you are capable of. I know that i have read many stories of men like him, and i stand in awe, and honor such a man. When i see thumbs down, it makes my blood boil to the point of rage, as what kind of person could do that, and be a American. I guess that is what this country is becoming. Master Sergeant Benavidez, i hear you have passed away, and i have said a prayer for you and the people who loved you, and served with you. You are truly one of my Hero's. If our country would act more like you, and less like what i see in the NFL, how greater could this nation become. I salute you.
well said
Thank you. May he RIP & Honor.
