Admiral McRaven addresses the University of Texas at Austin Class of 2014

- Remarks by Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, B.J. '77, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Texas Exes Life Member, and Distinguished Alumnus.
Admiral McRaven offered advice for changing the world from his 36 years of experience as a Navy SEAL: Ask for help when you need it, respect everyone, persevere through failures and, perhaps surprisingly, make your bed every day. Thanks for the sage words, Admiral. Hook 'em Horns!

What a speech. I just made the bed and I'm in a hotel!!!
lol
if you stay in the hotel no need to make bed ... But in your house you must to do
😂
I am blown away..... ' fake potus ' should bury his head in the sand like an ostrich ' in shame, if a shred of integrity exists in him !!! Revealing Team 5 is a replica of treason...Wow only a lotus does dat, not a real potus !!! If the GOP can't stand up after this disastrous leak, God help the children of the US !!
Salute Admiral McRaven one hell of a speech, hope he can stand up to the WH since GOP speakers have not and will not !!
Well am baout to go to bed and after hearing this speech I made my bed.
1:01 He didn’t think he could make a memorable speech: little did he know that it would be hailed as one of the greatest motivational speeches of the modern era.
The great dictator by Charles Chaplin
I listen to this every morning. When I feel like a sugar cookie , I just think of this. I can’t stop listening to this. To the 2014 class at UT Man you were blessed to have sat through this. Hookem horns.
Of all time!
@@PortCharlotteAlex I was one of the graduates in the crowd that night, but was so drunk that I only remember the fireworks at the end (maybe because I took a video & watched the next day) - I had no idea the value that this speech would end up holding & how impactful it was
Devil horns at the end of his speech. FK him he is in league with the devil.
2014, 2019, 2024...no matter what year or when one discovers this video, these words will always resonate. Thank you Admiral McRaven
If you're watching this, you're probably more awesome than you think ❤
I needed this. Thanks

So true.
Awww thanks!
knowing that the man is absolutely inspirational
1. Start each day with a task completed.(Making beds 4:43)
2. Find someone to help you through life. (Row together 6:14)
3. Respect everyone.(The Munchkins 7:28)
4. Know that life is not fair. ("Sugar Cookie" 8:38)
5. You will fail often. (The circus 10:04)
6. Take some risks. (New record, head first 11:30)
7. Face down the bullies. (Sharks 12:52)
8. Step up when the times are toughest. (The dark keel 14:02)
9. Lift up the downtrodden. (Song of hope 15:38)
10. Never ever give up. (Don't ring that bell 17:50)
Thank you.
What a lucky class of 2014!!
@bojan desmaels Some folks wouldn't understand the analogies. Just cause you can, doesn't mean the rest of the folks on this planet will.
Thank you, Jon. Helpful.
@@sarahkubagenda9864 Jon took the time to summarize the 10 key points, anyone who criticizes his efforts, only underscores the difference between those who have The determination to be the best and brightest vs. those who should never lead....or comment.
We need leaders who embody these lessons once again.
Amazing speech. This is the caliber of person we need leading our country. I would vote for him as President in a heartbeat.
+Matt Dragovits I was thinking the same thing. I need some inspiration right now.. and the current bunch on both sides just don't have it.
I don't live in the USA but I'd have no problem with him leading the free world - whatever party he represented. Why don't common sense people like this get the backing to run for office? From what I know Wesley Clark and Al Haig were the last ex-military men to run for President and they didn't get very far.Instead you get draft dodgers like George Dubbya and the laughable trump.
But you are the one that is choosing who to vote for based off of one 20 minute speech. I think that this is the real problem
Adm. Raven would be a great president I believe. Let Trump or Clinton speak 20 minutes. You will hear the difference. They would not even come close to the message McRaven has.
You are so ease to be convinced.
I found this speech in 2016. I still revisit it sometimes to remind myself that when things get tough, my opportunities to change my situation are closer than ever.
I discovered this in 2019 and I come back to this video for the exact same reason.
he wrote a book called make a bed
this is the greatest admiral i have ever known. Know him. Love him.
30 years later i know his way is true.
be better than you think you are. be a man better than you think you are.
To anyone who reads this, I see you and I know you'll make it. Don't give up. I'm rooting for you :)
I was considering ending it all, but seeing your comment made me start to rethink. Maybe there are more people out there who believe in me like you do. You might have just saved my life. Thank you
😢thank you, always have ti come back to these motivational videos becuase I ain't got no1 telling me some things
As I was watching this he seemed familiar. Checking his biography I discovered why he was familiar. We graduated and were commissioned as Naval Officers at UT Austin in May 1977. We spent 4 years as Navy ROTC classmates. Strange that after 43 years my memory recognized the older face and not the name.
Sorry I'm not familiar with the U.S officer schooling system, but does this mean that you spent an additional four years in Navy ROTC after graduating from UT Austin? I thought you go to Officer Candidate School if you've graduated college and become an officer in that way. Btw how does the selection work for the SEAL officers? Can you apply for SEAL training right after ROTC or OCD or do you have to have a few years of experience as an officer before applying?
@@mohunter68 ??
@@mohunter68 The hook'em horns hand sign goes back to the 50's you vapid twit. It is not Satanic, it symbolizes the horns of the Texas longhorn, the mascot and team name at UT. Moron. It has had many uses over centuries, including ASL, a gesture to expel demons, and to signal that someone is a cuckold.
You are one of the persons he has changed. May his lesson treat you well. And may you continue to change lives as well. Truly inspiring.
It's been noted that humans take in visual data better. Which makes sense because when we're born, people spend a lot of time up close to your face and since your language isn't there yet, then that's all you have to go on.
I am alive for one more day because I found this beautiful speech 2 weeks ago. I had a bad accident 10 months ago and did not think I would even be able to get out of bed much less make it. Today I got out of bed and tomorrow I will drag my painful body out of bed again because if for even 1 day tell my gazillion doctors and physical, speech, neurologists that I don't want to i will have dishonored the incredibly hard work they have done to keep me alive. Bless you admiral. Thank you for swimming under water for 2 miles in the dark to complete a mission that kept me safe enough to be able to complain about crawling out of bed today to relearn how to tie my shoes and brush my teeth on my own.
I surprised that this doesn’t have more likes.

The Admiral said more in 20 minutes than many could say in 2 hours. Reminds me of the instructions my first pastor, Bruce Vanoer, gave me I first started public speaking, "Be Brief, Be Interesting, Sit Down". Those who take the time to digest the Admiral's words will find a treasure trove of wisdom and instruction. Well said!

Yes they are too the proud the few the Marines are the most beautiful people who don't have any worries they stand in the obstacles and then get through them effectively efficiency and integrity and nothing can stop them for they are the most determined resilient and can be there at a moment notice to help you with any problems you face equipt with everything they need is inside them

I watched the Seal training video, and it was really tough, some guys passed out during the course, some guys rang the bell. But at the end of the training, it's worth every sing minute of the whole team who remained strong spirit and commitment .
ONLY the BEST finish!!
Reminds me of the Adam Brown story. Fearless. The man fought through hardships, including drugs and self doubt. He fought and died an American hero. Not many know the story of Adam Brown, but he fought as a Navy Seal, he failed many times as a man and fought just as hard to be the man he wanted to be. A beautiful story of a man who became a Navy Seal, who became a Father, who became a drug addict, who became a man struggling. A story if a man who became something bigger than he ever knew. A strong and weak man at the same time. A man, who was a man. I have never met him, but I always have the security that Adam Brown was there and I could possibly be ok. An American hero, a man that I can relate to, fought an incalculable force and gave his life to fight this enemy. All men who decide this path is a hero.
This speech will motivate you. PERIOD ! LISTEN TO IT EVERYDAY.

@@pauljohn6546 America is far from evil! We are a young country and have successfully gotten further than most countries. It's sad that we help other countries before our own nowadays, but if I was president of the United States, I would help our country and then help other countries. I care dearly about this whole world, but a leader of one country should make it their first priority to lead their country before other counries bc God is the leader of the world and he takes care of the world and we the people are not God! On the other hand it encourages people to work like a slave all their lives and to think it acceptable to lose everything and then die at the end of life - in a state of war. We are conditioned to think that war is a natural and intelligent state of being that only the fight is worth it but the worth depends upon the end not the intrinsic struggle.
The same lie resides in the axiom 'adversity is the mother of invention' but the truth is that nothing is invented within adversity because adversity precludes it. Inventions occurs in peace time even in the midst of conflict. Peace is often achieved by isolation.
The fear generated by the need for defence turns into justification for perpetual attack so that civilisation becomes determined by war. The origin of divine right to rule might actually be determined by reason not might.
Primitive fear divides people and is used to divide and rule, which is ultimately self-defeating.
thats cause you are a loser
