  • Remarks by Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, B.J. '77, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Texas Exes Life Member, and Distinguished Alumnus.
Admiral McRaven offered advice for changing the world from his 36 years of experience as a Navy SEAL: Ask for help when you need it, respect everyone, persevere through failures and, perhaps surprisingly, make your bed every day. Thanks for the sage words, Admiral. Hook 'em Horns!

Why don't common sense people like this get the backing to run for office? From what I know Wesley Clark and Al Haig were the last ex-military men to run for President and they didn't get very far.Instead you get draft dodgers like George Dubbya and the laughable trump.

As I was watching this he seemed familiar. Checking his biography I discovered why he was familiar. We graduated and were commissioned as Naval Officers at UT Austin in May 1977. We spent 4 years as Navy ROTC classmates. Strange that after 43 years my memory recognized the older face and not the name.

Sorry I'm not familiar with the U.S officer schooling system, but does this mean that you spent an additional four years in Navy ROTC after graduating from UT Austin? I thought you go to Officer Candidate School if you've graduated college and become an officer in that way. Btw how does the selection work for the SEAL officers? Can you apply for SEAL training right after ROTC or OCD or do you have to have a few years of experience as an officer before applying?

I am alive for one more day because I found this beautiful speech 2 weeks ago. I had a bad accident 10 months ago and did not think I would even be able to get out of bed much less make it. Today I got out of bed and tomorrow I will drag my painful body out of bed again because if for even 1 day tell my gazillion doctors and physical, speech, neurologists that I don't want to i will have dishonored the incredibly hard work they have done to keep me alive. Bless you admiral. Thank you for swimming under water for 2 miles in the dark to complete a mission that kept me safe enough to be able to complain about crawling out of bed today to relearn how to tie my shoes and brush my teeth on my own.

Reminds me of the Adam Brown story. Fearless. The man fought through hardships, including drugs and self doubt. He fought and died an American hero. Not many know the story of Adam Brown, but he fought as a Navy Seal, he failed many times as a man and fought just as hard to be the man he wanted to be. A beautiful story of a man who became a Navy Seal, who became a Father, who became a drug addict, who became a man struggling. A story if a man who became something bigger than he ever knew. A strong and weak man at the same time. A man, who was a man. I have never met him, but I always have the security that Adam Brown was there and I could possibly be ok. An American hero, a man that I can relate to, fought an incalculable force and gave his life to fight this enemy. All men who decide this path is a hero.

@@pauljohn6546 America is far from evil! We are a young country and have successfully gotten further than most countries. It's sad that we help other countries before our own nowadays, but if I was president of the United States, I would help our country and then help other countries. I care dearly about this whole world, but a leader of one country should make it their first priority to lead their country before other counries bc God is the leader of the world and he takes care of the world and we the people are not God! We can only do so much, but God can do all! This is a great and inspirational speech that I listened to in my middle school class and im a senior now! It makes me wanna get up every day knowing I'm important to people! This guy right here who gave this speech fought for many lives and he didn't have to. It is truly inspirational. I’m not military but my dad was retired Army. It takes everyone to raise a family, change a city, county, state and national laws, ordinances, etc. Anyone can be a leader changing the negativity, anger and discrimination so prevalent in the world. We can do it by pulling together. Do what you can and never, ever quit!!!

On the other hand it encourages people to work like a slave all their lives and to think it acceptable to lose everything and then die at the end of life - in a state of war. We are conditioned to think that war is a natural and intelligent state of being that only the fight is worth it but the worth depends upon the end not the intrinsic struggle.
The same lie resides in the axiom 'adversity is the mother of invention' but the truth is that nothing is invented within adversity because adversity precludes it. Inventions occurs in peace time even in the midst of conflict. Peace is often achieved by isolation.
The fear generated by the need for defence turns into justification for perpetual attack so that civilisation becomes determined by war. The origin of divine right to rule might actually be determined by reason not might.
Primitive fear divides people and is used to divide and rule, which is ultimately self-defeating.
