Prepare to be amazed by the capabilities of the latest shader in Blender 4.2! This groundbreaking tool isn't just an update-it's a revolution in the way we think about and create visual effects in 3D environments. In this video, we explore the insane potential of this new shader that lets you create realistic portals, dynamic reflections, and much more.
We'll dive deep into a hands-on tutorial where you'll learn how to harness the power of this new shader to craft mesmerizing portals that look like they're straight out of a sci-fi movie. From setting up the basic shader nodes to fine-tuning the effects for maximum impact, we'll cover all the steps necessary to bring these fantastical elements into your projects.

Oh my gosh I can’t wait to use this to make picture-in-picture renders!!! Thanks for the video!!!
There seems to be something wrong with the perspective of the blue side at 8:32
At first I thought it was like a projection screen but it’s way better!
'It's bigger on the inside' - Doctor Who
Me hoping it works in Eevee
And also Eevee legacy staying
Bad pc
Nice!
Interesting vid, trying to get back into blender after a big break!
me too! so excited to start now
PLEASE HELP ME - Eyes and mouth not moving with face in pose mode.
I had seen CGmatter's tutorial and immediately started playing. What I was wondering and unfortunately never got an answer in the comments there is: do you always have to work top down with these portals? I tried to look into rooms from other sides but never got it to work, it's always distorted from other views. Or at least never the same like the original method.
Have you tried adjusting the Mapping Node Rotation to match the object rotation? I tested it over here and that seems to work
@@pedrohenriquesilvasampaiod7383 It's been a while since I saw the other video and tested it... but I can't remember exactly what kind of things I did, "a lot" I would say. Somehow your suggestion seems quite obvious to me since I'm no beginner, so I would guess I did try that. But probably not. When I have time to try some more I'll check that again and maybe come back to you later if I'm struggling to get it right.
You have to fix the direction vector. The best solution I found was to just plug the direction through a Vector Transform node (set it from World to Object) and then into the Direction input of the Ray Portal.
I’ve actually published a very easy to use portal set-up on my Gumroad (it’s free). It has 2 portals you can place anywhere, rotate, etc., and it works seamlessly. You can find it from my last videos about ‘Easy Portal’.
He rotates in this video
@@fergadelics All scenes were made with the "rooms" being built down into -Z direction, none of them is rotated with its depth in X or Y direction. Also the more complex example scenes at the end are viewed top down as well.
Thank you. For a long time I could not understand why my portal was not working. It turned out that he was not visible in Eevee. Is it possible to make this portal work in Eevee too?
*I saw in the documentation for this node that it only works with Сycles
thank you!!
Omg thank yuo so much!
Woah this is going to be crazy
it doesnt work for me
This is unfathomably cool, and this tutorial is very well taught. Thanks for posting, can't wait to see the crazy things people do with this :]
It's really good node
Parallax effect now it easy
you could potentially use drivers so that no matter where the portal is moved or the room, the portal projection follows it :) That way you don't need to manually find the room each time. less math, more fun! :)
wow, this could make some really easy/effective rooms/windows for buildings - build one simple room and have multiple planes/windows looking into it.
Hello guys. I followed all the steps and it doesnt work for me. I repeat everything so many times, and also I tried to follow the steps in the channels place in the description, but I cannot get a good result. Any of you could help me to see what´s happening? It would be very appreciated!
I normally tend to hold off on updating blender since my material node preview addon breaks every major blender update, but this shit right here is fucking awesome and I absolutely need it ASAP
That's a really cool feature! Thanks for showing it on youtube.😀
i don't have an option of ray portal BSDF in my blender 4.2
is this cycles exclusive?
Yes
Tried this on the 4.2 beta on my Mac and it didn't work.
i too
I will use this feature on the glass of an astronaut's helmet
Great stuff, as usual, and clearly explained. I'm looking forward to playing with this.
I was wondering why I couldn't get it to work until I realized I needed to change my render engine to Cycles. Do that and you're good to go :)
Iam using blender 3.2 because some of my addons only work with that version , can i somehow bring this portal node to the older version ? Like saving the file or somthin
Impossible, this is new from version 4.2
@@Jarviex tooshey
segui todos os passos e nao reflete no plane
Could this sort of thing be baked and exported as a map?
Amazing!
Omg I was trying to find a workflow for this earlier in the morning. This video came right on time!! Thank you so much
Where did "addons" go? Loop Tools, BSurfaces, Carver, extra object-Curve etc.
It's awesome, but I wish the portal could be in a totally different blend file. maybe a totally different scene?
Let’s say I have a scene in a stadium. Do you think I could use this method to cast a video of the play action on the Jumbotron of the scene? Usually you’d have to render the scene from that angle and then use image as plane.
wooooooooooooooooow so epic, thank you sooo much!!
This will make it much easier to make non-euclidean environment!! I'm really excited for 4.2
This reminds me of the windows texture used to build static rooms that change angle as the camera position changes. In this case you could have animated windows that are only a single plane.
I was legit just tring to think of how I could do something like this a few days ago.
I’m wondering Maya can do this? Or can’t?
Love ur channel! I was curious as to how you protect your copyright for your film?
Will this work in layers. your scenes on one layer and the portal window on another layer?
It's amazing! I always wanted to know how to make something like this! Thank you for sharing!
Finally making illusion has become easier
It's like non Euclidean
is 4.2 going to be LTS?
That feature is 🔥
YES YES YES YES 🎉
Great video!
awesome
Perfect
❤️
Lightwave had a similar shader over a decade ago. It was called CCTV. Curious to see what this Blender version can do.
The CCTV shader only projected the view from a camera. The Ray portal allows viewing from whatever angle you look at it from giving you the parallax depth effect. Completely different.
@@StevenWhite-w6p Thanks. Been a long time since I used the CCTV shader. It was great at the time, but this new one really looks like it's got way more possibilities.
When does this version realese
Blender 4.2 is scheduled for release July this year
Is 4.2 released?
No just the beta
