Brilliant video, thanks a million buddy! Your video gave me the confidence to have a go. I did the same thing with a washing machine a few years back....... it's still in bits in the shed 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Having done a few of these I was as nervous as you on the first one. I was shouting at the video...you don't need to unscrew that....put the little spring back in its part of the clicker. 🤣 Makes a big difference to the reel and shame Penn don't provide a replacement with the reel.
Ah mate for some reason I absolutely hate it. I’ve never looked at a reel schematic before, massive need when taking the reel apart. Life saver having that!
Hi guys. I am planning to change mine for the first time. Does the spring goes into the dial of the dial mag? I saw where it came from but when changing the knob. Do you put it in the new knob of leave ut out with the original knob? Help, thanks.
Thanks for doing this video. I have been thinking of treating myself to the casting special or the 525, from what I can see they are very similar, but I would rather the casting special as it has a metal body. I was however put off by the big mag adjusting knob, which many people say gets in the way. Now I know this is no longer a problem, soon as I can find where to get the alternative knob, I may well go ahead and order the reel. Once again thank you.
I put a mag from one of these reels on a squall 25n and added ceramic bearings boy it flys and only have to put it to a quarter and don’t even have to finger the spool
Thanks for posting, just converted mine and your video helped a lot. A couple of issues I noticed with mine: On reassembly, I noticed that the plate that covers the magnets didn’t have full travel before hitting one of the stops. This was preventing full mag for casting. I was really careful not to disturb anything when taking it apart. I suspect this was how it came?? Also, one of the white washers under the bolts for the side plate was ‘mullered’. I think I got a Friday afternoon reel :-}.
You need to make sure that the magnet position fully closed before putting the dial on. Can’t remember off the top off my head but pretty sure that’s what need to be done. As for the washer I have no idea why it’s like that. Use the schematic and order a new one I would recommend
Would be nice if Penn gave you the option or put one in with the reel not much for them to do this as with the 525 mag extra with the bearing upgrade then I’d be very interested
I’m not 100% sure mate as I’ve never used the mag 4 and a lot of people say that the casting special components are cheap and break….however I’ve had no trouble with mine….so far
@@fishtales9688 Cheers Tom, I was just thinking is a graphite frame better over cast aluminium. Aluminium does scratch more than graphite though. Like the channel, learning a lot especially as you are local to me. Cheers mate.
Can I ask a question here. IS the mag End plate the same as a Penn fathom 2 15 SD As they look the same to me before you took yours apart I have 2 Penn Fathom 2 15SD's and there great reels
The 15 sd 2 is nearly identical to this as standard, not sure why you pay 50 quid extra and then have to mess around with changing the mag, I have 3 fathom 2 sd, and I have also owned the casting special, there is no difference in performance between those reels, other than the spool is slightly wider so it holds more line
That’s exactly why for more line and some parts are upgraded too. Had more grunt than the other fathoms but apparently had a lot more problems too which I’m yet to come across. Lots of people aren’t fans on the casting specials but I love mine 🤙🏽🎣
@@fishtales9688 The Casting specials provide a lot less birds nests haha.. They are so easy to control with that extra braking adjustment. Fell in love with the first Cast and out of 10 casts no nests and no rollups. After first cast my first thought was I need another one .
How many people when fishing just cast a six ounce lead with bait and then wind the magnets off?? (None) Plus where it is could easily get altered by hand contact possible next cast. CRACK
It's unlikely you would accidently knock the mag brakes off even if you bumped the knob with your hand. There's a fair bit of resistance from click to click in the knob and even if you did shift it you would probably increase the mag braking power rather than decrease it.
I’m really glad you posted that, I replaced mine the other day. But watching yours I realised I didn’t change the rubber washer over,so thanks 👍🎣🐟

Thanks mate, to be honest it’s all the fun and learning taking things apart. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing but I still filmed it 😂
Great video! Thanks. Looking to change mine, just having a hell of a time finding the parts here in the U. S.
Mystic reel parts. Less than $10 shipped.

Great vid I just did mine yesterday..keep up the great content…tight lines 🎣🎣
Just done mine following your video (springs inc). All seemed good, cheers!
Awesome! Glad the video helped 🎣🤙🏽
Just have to wait for the fathom mark 3 to see what they come up with next bound to get it right in the end

Nice job Tom
Great video mate
What is the part i look for on ebay to purchase, do you have a part number or link
Thank in advance
It was on eBay mate
Thanks mate found it
Penn should supply these for free, as an option in the box. we shouldn't have to pay for their design flaw. Good video 👍
Completely agree mate, shit design but still a great reel
@@fishtales9688 yeah the reel is mint, I’ll just have to blow £24 and get it done!

Hi there. Awsome video where can get the new mag control please
I ordered mine off eBay a few years ago

Such an easy thing to do once you know what to do. And makes the world of difference!
Im in 2 minds to buy a MAG 4 525 or the Fathom 2 casting special. Which is better in your opinion for medium/heavy fishing the Pembrokeshire coast?

Hi Mate, great video, do you know where i can get the replacement knobs please?
Hi, I ordered mine off eBay but can’t seem to find them in there now
How much better is the Fathom II Casting special compared to the Squall II casting special other than the metal frame. Is there a huge diference?
No idea mate never used the squall
No difference, I own both.
Where did you get the new nob from?
I guess you figured out the rubber knobbed spring goes under the dial. There are two of them.
I did indeed, I found out the hard way 😂
Do you need to put the spring back in? My dial seems to be a little tight and not lose and smooth
I did mate, not sure if it makes any difference
