- Join the lads as they look over the Penn fathom 2 casting special and give an overall verdict from the casting side of things @seaanglingadventuresmedia brought to you be www.gerrysfishing.com
They say you can use the small short knob from the new 15 and 12 to keep the knobby one from digging into your wrist
great review guys, ive just brought 2 zziplex m4 gt 's and was gonna pair them up with the penn 2. you guys know exactly whats needed in a multiplier so puts yours heads together, get it designed n on the market n we'll all be happy lol. seriously give it some thought
I've caught plenty of bull red drums at Cape Hatteras with the Penn Fathom 2 CS and haven't noticed the mag knob issue. It's reaching the target species so that's no problem from my viewpoint. The added bonus is the larger spool - absolutely no line anxiety there when you have a monster on the other end.
I own 2 of these penns, I know what you mean about the mag knob but to be honest I don't find it a problem, aside from that fantastic reels, great drag smooth casting, the magnets are amazing and cranking power is superb
Penn offers an aftermarket part that is a low profile mag adjustment knob so it's really not an issue for people who dislike the big one.
Interesting. Still would go with the penn. Akios looks like a boy racers car. What we need is a Daiwa slx 20 sha with the 7ht Magnofuge breaking. Great Review guys
Penn every time
For those of you not liking the cast control knob on the casting special I've had mine modified by Chris Macey and the results are awesome 👌
MRPrimosynchro message me on Felacebook mate
@@SEAANGLINGADVENTURESI've sent Andy a message
Can you post a video of the modified mag?
@@otroflores91 I will see what I can do when I get home from work tonight mate
If only Daiwa did a saltist BG30 with a quality factory mag, my fishing life would sorted.
#cantlosetheclickerman. Great review boys and much appreciated.
The centrifugal brakes - do they not work so well?
Sorry I live in Spain , what kind of rod or mark are you using with fathom II?
I have now watched both these videos,
I have a question for you guys.
Where do I get that thumb protector from as it would be a lot better that having the rubber strap on my reel. Thanks guys
Oh one more question, Where can I learn how to pendulum cast, I do the over head and off the ground cast Thanks again guys.
the whole fathom range is great
my fathom mk 2 15 is a dream .. well once you tame it ..lol but came from a diawa ht mag .. .. once it dies will be getting another 15
You can get the Penn 15 without the big mag knob but it holds less line
Where in devon are you casting?
The casting special only comes in 15 size as far as I know. Could you get a fathom 2 in 12 or 15 size and get in mono magged and would that solve the problem?
Simple quick fix switch out the knob for the dial it’s like $1.00 part number is 1214682 old part number is 302B525MAG2 hope this helps
Is it possible now, too put the mag off the pen mag 3 onto the reel replacing the factory fit mag ?
How's the standard Fathom 2 [FTH2SD] compare in casting having a slightly narrower spool and not the 'knobby' mag but the dial type [more flush] ? I'm from Australia and the "CS" seems to be more marketed to our northern hemisphere friends.
I think if Penn made the reel so you could rotate the side plate in 90 degree increments to suit the users preference for mag/ratchet placement ?
buy the 525 low dial and screw, they are interchangeable. No I haven't read all the comments.
I know you shouldnt have to with a reel thats the best part of 200quid, but by changing the mag controller for the mag dial from a penn 515/525 mag2 or mag3, or for the same controller from a Fathom2 mag..... that solves the problem completely.
Line trap 100% no no
loads of options to reduce the knob size
Do you find that using the Penn that you have a problem getting your thumb round the spool. The akios is small enough to rap your thumb round the spool. You have to lock the spool with your thumb to stop the spool slip.
Roland Bailey I believe it depends on your hand size. I have a Squall 15/525 mag 2. Same size as the FTH2-15CS.
Never had trouble gripping the spool completely to add more power. I love the Akios as well as I’ve watched countless videos on them. I’m tuning my ABU reels with their custom parts from their AKIOS website...a non-level AKS cage, spool, stainless main gear/pinion gear, ABECS, etc.
Fantastic video my friends, I'm from Texas therefore we fish for big Jack's, sharks, and bull Reds off the beach. I would go for the penn however the mag knob is in the wrong position. Have, you guys contacted Penn regarding the design flaw?
Apparently the mag 2 mag button fits straight on, problem solved
It’s not a design flaw!!!
As an American, the Akios is cheaper and not on backorder until January.......it is also made in Taiwan and not Pure Fishing China....
what is it you wear on your thumb during casting

Just bought mine was really worried after watching many videos, but tried on the rod with no problems the mag looks large in the videos and the reel does aswell having used mine it's not half as big as I was thinking and it's smaller than my saltist bg20s cast like a dream and the drag is miles better than my saltists aswell loaded it with 19lb rovex10x 60lb shock loaded it on the m427 for a few cast and I'm well happy with it. The only thing I don't like is the handle has a little play in it sideways more than what I am used to bit annoying but easily solved.
The F-15 is closer to the Squall than the Fathom in materials. Penn just launched a casting special Squall II for $180. It's almost half the price of the F-15, but a close competitor across the board. I love the Akios 666 and 757, but Akios better pull up its socks if it wants to play against Penn with offerings like the F-15.
Exactly. The f15 is basically Akios's version of a 525, a reel inferior to a Fathom by a long chalk for various reasons.
To charge the amount they do for them isnt on at all.
@@kf8575 Agreed. I preface this by saying I love my Akios 757 reel and think highly of the Akios metal framed 600 series, esp. the Shuttle. However, I won't even look at the F15 at an MSRP of $290. From what I can tell, it's essential a 666 with a composite frame. The F15 is actually best compared to Penn's new Penn Squall II 15 Distance Casting reel which is retailing for $180. The even nicer Fathom II 15 regular/DC with a metal frame is retailing for $200/$250. If Akios wants the F15 to sell in the U.S. it will need competitive pricing.
what size is this real
The big casters always tell me to keep my right arm straight, yet you guys don't., why's that please? I'll keep my 525 Supermag xtra, built like a tank, smooth as silk, and as fast as you want it.
Keeping it straigh'ish creates a bigger arc during the rotation phase, but reality is you need a bit of a bend in the right arm to do the final punch, otherwise you are bowling the rod rather than hitting it!
So wouldn't the fathom ii non casting special be everything, just short 15% the line?
At 22:30 there’s weird mist in background on left side .
It's a cooking enthusiast smoking some hams.
Never understood why the Squall has it right and then they swapped position for Fathom and ruined it.
You guys missed the line capacity difference and that is the reason for such little left on the Akios on cast. It seems it was being seen as a positive for some reason for the Akios but in fact is over 30% less line capacity.
Akios : 0.40mm 260m/284yd
Fathom II CS : 0.40mm 370m/405yd
That is a HUGE difference and the reason for the slight width and weight difference in the reels.
That gap in the Akios body and spool is a PITA when fishing. Maybe its less of a pain in casting comps but it gets worse with thinner line i can tell you that. With thin braided it happens A LOT. Mono a bit less. Its BS to have a gap like that after yrs of reviews beating up Manf. for doing that with many past reels.
That handle and the angle of the drag star wheel are less that ok. That grip just for whatever reason feels weak ...it lacks confidence.
On the FATHOM CS:
The one huge issue for those that close grip their line feeding hand is that huge knobby mag knob. There is an easy fix for those fishing it. The same knob spec is used on the squall and old 525mag2. For just a few dollars/quid you can order the dial which is marked and the retaining screw. Here are the parts numbers.
302B-525MAG2 Dial
302H-525MAG2 Retaining screw
Penn Service: (800) 892-5444
That might not be ideal for cast comp but that can be handled by simply turning the current knob down to height that does not rub yet still gives positive easy grip for during cast out adjustment.
Both reels are great no doubt. Both seriously smooth on the cast. For fishing it seems hard to argue against the Fathom. Especially with the simple mag dial swap. Its reel handle is way better as well and not once did the line loop the spool thru the body gap like the Akios does even with thin power pro 15lb
I am not a Cast comp I surf/shore fish etc. Maybe there are +/- specific to high level comp I am ignorant in that area for sure. But for fishing I would find it hard to choose the Akios over the Fathom especially if you do the simple may knobby to dial swap upgrade.
I have heard that on long overly thick rods the Fathom fit is tight /small. I run a 12' so its a none issue and I've seen on 13s with no issues but again its clear its too narrow or small for ideal fit on some larger/longer rods. I think here in the USA as a % we use shorter side of the surf rods at least for fishing. 9'-13'
But if you guys keep a fathom cs I strongly recommend grabbing those dial parts and try the swap. Also order an extra fathom cs knob and send it to a machinations and have him shorten it in the grip. Anyone with a lathe can do it in a few mins even a micro lathe as its not a precision part that needs to the ethics decimal tolerances. Its just the grip part after all.
One last thing I love and IMHO needs mentioning is the quick access removable end plates. No handles or drag wheels to take off. Just unscrew and done. Makes cleaning and oil general maintenance way easy. Its those kind of thoughtful design addition IMO that show the effort put into this model.
That magnet position is what stopped me from ordering the casting special.
You can get a low-profile knob from Penn for a few dollars. Some people have got them free by talking nicely to customer service.
@@andrewmorke I just ended up getting a 15 ii
Smash fishing, suck it up bro!!!
I replace mine with mono mags
Cracking rod T1000
As far as I know the Akios isn't a mono mag
Penn ruined this reels with that knob. Please fix asap
You can contact Penn and get a low profile knob. Not a problem. New Squall II 15 casting special has knob in different position.
