@@JonathanWinbush Absolutely!!!!....Just missing the 4 hours epic C4D 2024.4 tutorial of Chris Rocket Lasso of the round trip is done for today! I haven't seen you there yet 😜 So many good stuffs happening! And tomorrow I'll do your UI unreal engine tutorial. By the way I took your Unreal Engine course in School of Motion the last few months! Great work. I learnt a lot
Yeah we can definitely work with that. I'm excited to see what they add next, line overshoots and custom shading patterns are what I'm most excited for.
Great stuff. I actually love Sketch and Toon in C4D and I know it's pretty dated compared to the other cel shader 3D programs but I still love it. Great to see Redshift finally incorporate it.
EJ we all are happy about the new shader, but one thing Maxon really has to do is Vertex Normal rotation. Without tweaking the normals there is no fighting Blender. Rotation of how the normals would shade the NPR is super imporant if ever possible. It's what allows some software to do cel shaders the more complete way. Meaning each vertex point or group of points would have control on which gradient knot is being read at that interpolated value.
I could be wrong, but isn’t this what the new vertex normal tool does? Let’s you individually move them, or move them all to presets like soft or hard.
@@CompleteGodel is there such a tool? I havent updated yet so I hope you're right. But in any case I would much prefer a smoothing groups appraoch for these processes to a deprecated phong shader.
ITS ABOUT TIME! I been on arnold render for C4D in the absence of a toon shader in redshift. . but i have always missed c4d's toon shader. So I might end up with 2 render engines now lol.
They have already added a new setting for the contours since this video was posted. Using the project files, I was not getting a lot of the contour lines that EJ was (like around the eyes). When he got to the section discussing contour lines, I saw on my side there is now a check box for "Detect Separate Meshes" that is off by default. When I checked this box, the contours showed up as expected.
I love Arnold Toon. It's going to take a lot of work to reach that level but I assume Redshift will run a lot faster. I'm not sure Arnold ever got the Toon Shader to work with GPU.
Hi and thank you very much for thos intro to Redshift toon shader! Great overview and a good starting point for me. Is it possible to ouline a group of objects so that alle elements of this group keep their original matrial (no toon shaders) but the group is outlined with a contour? I just think about effects I can do in Blender with the compositor and how to reproduce these effects with Redshift. Thank you!
EJ thank you very much! was wondering, in the sketch and toon we had so many settings we could play with the outline, distort, clone the outline etc. can we do it in RS aswell?
There's something missing with Redshift's ability to take the shadows - theyre not a jagged and irregular as Blender's can be but its almost like everything get blobby shadows in C4D toon shading. IDK if its the wizard or the wand but the shadows dont feel tlike they follow the geometry how they should in anime or blenders toon shading- which looks better - somehow its like theres a 10% wave warp on the shadows in c4d toon shading
I'm also seeing a smoothness in some areas that don't seem to go away until I go to the Toon Material node and switch Tonemap mode from Light and Opaque Shadow to Light and Shadow.
@@dmellis Im no person of authority on a topic like shader coding but I feel like if solo blenders artists can create plugins that work better than Maxon's new rollout wtf am i paying for
alsooo what about the overall outline width...i disconnected the contour node i was still left with an external outline that I can't seem to find any attributes for.
A question: when I select the RS materials dropdown menu, the toon shader doesn't show up in the list. All the other shaders are there though. Does anyone have a clue why I'm not seeing the Toon shader?
Hi, I bought your toon material pack, but it doesnt work. I installed it to asset browser, but when I want it to use, the connections are all red and its said something like that Dummy port
I know you've been waiting for this for a LONG time!

Bump maps affecting that terminator line between lit and shaded is super duper powerful!
Love toon shading and so glad it is native to RS now. Thanks for this video!
toonshading + redshift + EJ! ugh game over :D

EJ, thanks for this terrific walk-through, you're exactly the right person to flex on Toon - now that it's w/i Redshift it does some amazing things.
Awesome for a version 1! Thx for the good tut.

Sketch and Toon is still the GOAT!

ahhh this is gonna be amazing for creating interesting 2d text. cant wait!
100%!!!!
Very glad to see this even though I've gone full "B WORD" now 😅. More options is always great!
😉
Creating the "Toon" material from the dropdown does nothing. It spikes my frame rate and generates nothing in the material manager. Weird

Yep they fixed that super quick which is SOOO helpful! More art directability!
Thank you EJ!
Very welcome :)
Amazing! I hope they will add outline AOV, and the ability to generate lines base on texture!(Am I too greedy? 😅 )
Great introduction🙌
Nice!
Reference noise material is a nice touch...kind of a pain that it doesn't update in real-time. Great tutorial here though. Super exciting time.
I'm expecting C4D 2024.4.1 in a few weeks. The Toon features are great but there are some bugs and limitations.
and WE ALL KNOW THAT "EJ" LOVE THE TOON SHADERS :)) HAVE FAN
HECK YEAH BUDDY!
When they separate shading (scene and per object), color and lines via tags like S&T it will be a huge thing
Great news! I'd like to see somebody do a comparison of this with Arnold Toon, which is great. Can you draw a contour line around a shadow?
I love Arnold Toon. It's going to take a lot of work to reach that level but I assume Redshift will run a lot faster. I'm not sure Arnold ever got the Toon Shader to work with GPU.
This changes everything?!?!?!
for some reason I cant see the Contour input on the Output material?
Did you upgrade Redshift to 3.6.00?
Finally!

Hey EJ, thanks for sharing this. Is it possible to export to adobe illustrator with the redshift toon renderer?

Then you get hit with the classic Maxon "currently no way...but hopefully soon"
Any way to add redshift toon shder with pyro?
ive been using RS for 5 years and had no clue you could solo the nodes...
No screen space line width? That's a nightmare.

anyone figure out adding an outline to the shadows yet? curious how that would work, if at all
Great... but why has this taken so long?

Never mind, fixed it by reinstalling RS
